  • 2Near Whangarei, the Whatitiri Maori Reserve Trust has a Waitangi claim over use of the Poroti Springs. The Trust says the spring, which supplies Whangarei, is on its land and yet the Trust doesn't have any rights over the water. In the Waikato another trust last week won a legal victory in its fight to claim ownership of part of a stretch of the Waikato river bed near Mangakino. Meanwhile, the Maori Council has gained an urgent Waitangi Tribunal hearing over the Government's state asset sales plans and Maori treaty rights over water - a move which could delay the big sell-off.
