1A look back at one of the dominant issues of 2012 - Maori water rights. A look back at the report by reporter Ngahuia Wade, canvassing the response iwi had to the issue in the community of Taniwha Springs, near Rotorua.
While some iwi already have proprietary rights, others have negotiated mitigation agreements around their awa. Reporter Carmen Parahi talked to Ngati Rangi, in the shadow of Mount Ruapehu, about what the water debate meant to them.
For many, iwi ownership is only one of their concerns - pollution is another. Reporter Mana Epiha spoke to an angry Ngati Kahungunu ki Heretaunga.
However, it is not only current water rights that Maori are worried about. Reporter Te Hemara Rauhihi discovered that geothermal resources are being flagged as an issue for the future.
