AND THAT'S ONE NEWS FOR WEDNESDAY. ONE NEWS CAPTIONS BY LAUREN STRAIN AND RICHARD EDMUNDS. CAPTIONS WERE MADE POSSIBLE WITH FUNDING FROM NZ ON AIR. COPYRIGHT TVNZ ACCESS SERVICES 2013 DUE TO THE LIVE NATURE OF SEVEN SHARP, WE APOLOGISE FOR THE LACK OF CAPTIONS FOR SOME ITEMS. TONIGHT, IT IS THE WORST NIGHTMARE FOR ANY BEACHGOER ` WE HEAR WHAT THE EXPERTS HAVE TO SAY AFTER TODAY'S FATAL SHARK ATTACK IN WEST AUCKLAND. ITS THE FIRST DEADLY ATTACK IN SEVEN YEARS, SO WHAT, IF ANYTHING, CAN BE LEARNED? IT'S OFFICIALLY THE LAST DAY OF SUMMER TOMORROW, BUT WITH ZERO RAIN AND NOTHING BUT SUN, COULD THE NORTHLAND DROUGHT SPREAD TO THE REST OF THE COUNTRY? AND GOOD WEATHER IS BAD NEWS IF YOU'RE A GLACIER ` OUR REPORTER FINDS OUT TONIGHT WHY ONE OF OUR MOST BEAUTIFUL LAKES IS CURRENTLY BEING SERVED ON THE ROCKS. AND WHAT EXACTLY DOES AN EX BOY-BAND HEARTTHROB DO ON HIS DAY OFF? YOU CAN'T EVEN SEE WHERE IT WENT. BUT ELSEWHERE IN TODAY'S NEWS, THE NEW AIR NZ SAFETY VIDEO WAS LAUNCHED TODAY, FEATURING BEAR GRYLLS ON THE ROUTEBURN TRACK. NOW, CALL ME OLD-FASHIONED, BUT SHOULDN'T A SAFETY VIDEO FOR A PLANE ACTUALLY FEATURE ` OOH, I DUNNO ` A PLANE, NOT JUST WRECKAGE IN THE LANDSCAPE? I DUNNO, I QUITE LIKED IT, ALTHOUGH I NOTICED THAT WHEN HE DROPPED OUT OF THE PLANE, HE ENDED UP IN A BUSINESS-CLASS SEAT. I THOUGHT HE MUST BE GETTING SOFT. THEN HE ATE A GLOW-WORM. YEAH, AND HOW ABOUT THE GIANT MOA? YOU KNOW, IT'D BEEN SUCH A POSITIVE DAY FOR THE GAY COMMUNITY, THEN THIS HAPPENED. IT'S WEDNESDAY NIGHT. WELCOME TO SEVEN SHARP. THESE ARE THE PICTURES TAKEN BY THE WESTPAC RESCUE HELICOPTER SHORTLY AFTER A SHARK ATTACK THAT KILLED A SWIMMER AT MURIWAI THIS AFTERNOON. SHARK ATTACKS IN NZ ARE SO RARE, THE TRAGEDY TODAY HAS SHOCKED US ALL AND NONE MORE THAN THE FISHERMAN WHO WITNESSED THE ATTACK AND CALLED FOR HELP. MATT CHISHOLM MET HIM SOON AFTER THE HORRIFIC INCIDENT AT MURIWAI BEACH. HE YELLED OUT 'A SHARK', AND THEN WE LOOKED UP. HERE WE GO. THERE WAS BLOOD EVERYWHERE, AND THE SHARK WAS STILL ATTACKING HIM. THERE WAS BLOOD EVERYWHERE, AND THE SHARK WAS STILL ATTACKING HIM. AND THEN THE SHARK STOPPED THE ATTACKING AND HE PUT HIS HEAD UP, AND WE YELLED OUT AT HIM TO SWIM OVER TO THE ROCKS, AND HE RAISED HIS HAND UP. WHILE HE WAS RAISING HIS HAND UP, THE NEXT MINUTE, HE WENT DOWN; A SHARK PULLED HIM DOWN. LIFEGUARDS POOR RESPOND ` TAKE THEM 25 TO HALF AN HOUR TO GET THERE, THE SCENE, YEAH, BUT, UH... SO, WHAT DID THEY DO WHEN THEY GOT THERE? THEY GOT THERE, THEY WERE CIRCLE AROUND THE BODY, SLAPPING THE WATER, TRYING TO KEEP THE SHARK AWAY FROM THE DEAD BODY. DO YOU KNOW HOW THEY GOT THE BODY? WHEN THE TWO HELICOPTERS CAME AND THE TWO LIFEGUARD IN A BOAT, I HEARD SEVEN SHOTS, TWO OR THREE FROM THE HELICOPTER AND ABOUT FOUR OR FIVE FROM THE LIFEGUARD BOATS. THEY WERE SHOOTING THE SHARK. THIS WAS AFTER THE MAN WAS DEAD. YES, AFTER THE MAN WAS DEAD. AND AFTER THAT THEY WILL BE ABLE I SEE TWO LIFEGUARD BOAT, I THINK THEY WILL BE ABLE TO MOVE THE BODY ON TO THE LIFEGUARD BOAT AND BRING IT OVER TO THE SHORE. SO WHAT WAS GOING THROUGH YOUR MIND WHEN YOU SAW ALL OF THIS HAPPENING IN THE WATER? SHOCKING, MAN. SHOCKING. FIRST TIME SEEING THING IN REAL LIFE. YOU KNOW, YOU SEE IN TV, YOU SEE IN MOVIES LIKE JAWS AND THAT, BUT HAPPENING IN REAL LIFE, MAN, I'M SO SHOCKING, MAN. SCARED. MIKE BHANA HAS MADE DOCUMENTARIES ON SHARKS FOR ALMOST 20 YEARS. HE JOINS US FROM MURIWAI BEACH. We initially heard of a great White shark. From what you heard, is that what you believe as well was behind this attack? I've heard several different reports from the fishermen and from different witnesses. I've heard there were multiple sharks there. They're the sort of sharks and we are likely to find on this coast. It's not close to shore for either one of those species. They travel close to our shores. It is an incredibly rare event. Police shot and wounded, may be killed, we don't know, this shark. What sort of scenario does that paint, going forward, as far as the safety of other people? I don't think that shark, if it is winded, it is not going to become a greater threat to people. As far as the beaches in that area go, Piha, Bethells are closed until Friday. Is that safe enough? I believe that closing the beaches is a good thing to do at this time, just for us to get time to move on. Given what happened, it's the right thing to do as well. It's a horrific thing to have happened. The last thing we want to see happen is that repeat itself in the next few days. Experts have been saying today once A shark gets a taste for this sort of thing, is that how it works? I think it's definitely oversimplifying it. Sharks don't get a taste for human flesh. There is no history or evidence of that. The chance of them intercepting humans spokeswoman at a beach is low, considering the coastline we have. We've got a lot more people in the water, and the weather conditions mean it's been almost every day since Christmas. If you can hang with us, it would be great. Des Cook wants to know if people should be concerned about something other beaches? A return to normality would be great. We get this immediate fear when we hear the word shark. It's an irrational fear. I'd be very unconcerned about it. I'd be happy to get in the water today. Is the water heating up are likely to attract more sharks? Species likely to attack us are in reasonable numbers over the summer months. But compared with the chance of us actually getting attacked, you've got to look at those statistics and rationalise it. Hamish asks is the any pattern for shark attacks in New Zealand? No, there isn't. This attack happened in front of where the fishermen were fishing, so there was a lot of fish set in the water from the bait. They are fish OrienteD if sharks, so they are unlikely to attack humans. Thanks for that. AFTER THE BREAK ` WE'RE TALKING ABOUT THE HEAT, AND WHY DOES ONE OF OUR MOST BEAUTIFUL LAKES NOW LOOK LIKE A SMALL CHUNK OF ANTARCTICA? PLUS, WE DO WHAT THOUSANDS OF TEEN GIRLS IN THE '90S ONLY DREAMT OF ` NO MATTER HOW YOU LOOK AT IT, SOME THINGS JUST DON'T GO TOGETHER. A SOUTH ISLAND LAKE, A SUMMER DAY AND AN ICEBERG ARE THREE EXCELLENT EXAMPLES. BRODIE KANE WENT TO LOOK AT THE RESULTS AT TASMAN LAKE AND GOT A BIT OF A SURPRISE MID-SHOOT. ROBERT MILES' 'CHILDREN' IT DOESN'T GET MORE IMPRESSIVE THAN THIS ` A GIANT ICEBERG SITTING BANG, SMACK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE TASMAN LAKE. LAST WEEK THIS LAKE WAS JUST THAT. THEN ON THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE CHRISTCHURCH QUAKE, A HUGE SLAB BROKE OFF THE GLACIER IN A PROCESS CALLED CALVING, FILLING THE LAKE WITH ICE. WHEN IT BROKE, IT WOULD HAVE RISEN UP FROM UNDERNEATH, JUST OUT OF THE BLUE, NO WARNING. IT JUST CAME UP LIKE A BIG SHOPPING BLOCK, PRETTY MUCH, IT JUST CAME UP LIKE A BIG SHOPPING BLOCK, PRETTY MUCH, AND IT SENT WAVE ALL THE WAY DOWN TO OUR JETTY AT THE OTHER END OF THE LAKE, SORT OF LIKE A MINI TSUNAMI. THAT TSUNAMI MEASURED 9M UP THE SHORELINE. WHEN I FIRST SAW IT, I JUST ABOUT FELL OVER. THE FACT THAT YOU CAN HOP IN A BOAT AND SEE THAT UP CLOSE IS PRETTY GOOD TOO. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. THE SCALE OF THE WHOLE THING IS UNBELIEVABLE. I'D NEVER EXPERIENCE IT ANYWHERE ELSE, I THINK. YEAH, AMAZING. BEAUTIFUL? YEAH. BEAUTIFUL. VERY BEAUTIFUL. THIS BERG, WHICH HAS NOT YET BEEN NAMED, IS QUITE POSSIBLY THE BIGGEST THIS LAKE HAS SEEN. YOU'D BE LOOKING AT ABOUT 50M IN HEIGHT, AND THEN UNDERNEATH IT COULD BE ANYWHERE FROM 250M TO 300M DEEP. DO YOU HAVE ANY SENSE OF HOW MANY TONS OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT? UM,... JUST GUESSING, BUT THE LARGEST WE'VE HAD WOULD'VE BEEN NEAR ON` I THINK IT WAS 50 MILLION TONS, AND THIS WOULD BE CLOSE, IF NOT MORE. 50 MILLION TONS? 50 MILLION TONS WAS THE GUESSTIMATE LAST TIME. I CAN'T EVEN... IS THERE ANYTHING YOU COULD COMPARE THAT WITH? NOTHING I COULD. THAT'S QUITE BIG. I MEAN, YOU COULD ROLL A HOUSE OFF THAT, AND IT WOULDN'T REBALANCE IT. YOU COULD HAVE A RUGBY TEAM STANDING ON THE CORNER, AND THAT WEIGHT WOULDN'T BE ENOUGH REBALANCE IT OUT. EVEN MORE UNBELIEVABLE IS THAT IT WAS 30 DEGREES WHILE WE WERE FILMING THESE GINORMOUS ICE BLOCKS. IT ONLY SEEMED FAIR TO COOL DOWN OUR DRINKS WITH SOME 600-YEAR-OLD ICE. AND THEN THIS HAPPENED. SO I'VE ACQUIRED THIS ICE... SORRY. TURN AROUND. OH MY GOD. THAT'S COOL. LOOK AT THAT! OH MY GOD. LOOK. THAT'S AMAZING. HOLY... I TOLD YOU SOMETHING WAS GONNA HAPPEN. THAT'S WHY WE'VE GOT TO BE CAREFUL ` THEY HAVE A MIND OF THEIR OWN AND ARE ALWAYS LOOKING TO MOVE. SO, WE JUST SAW THIS ICEBERG ROLL OVER ABOUT 10 MINUTES AGO. WHAT'S THE MOST AMAZING THING TO SEE ABOUT IT WHAT'S THE MOST AMAZING THING TO SEE ABOUT IT IS THE BLUE COLOUR OF THE ICEBERG THAT WAS ORIGINALLY IN THE WATER WHICH HAS NOW RISEN BENEATH THE SURFACE, WHICH ACTUALLY IS ABOUT 90% OF IT. THE INTERESTING THING THAT HAPPENS NOW IS THAT THE SUN STREAMS DOWN ON IT AND OVER TIME IT'LL CHANGE TO WHITE. AND EVENTUALLY, THESE ICEBERGS WILL MELT. SOME TAKE LONGER THAN OTHERS. COULD BE UP TO TWO YEARS. REALLY? YEAH. SO IS GLOBAL WARMING OR MOTHER NATURE THE CAUSE? BEDE TENDS TO STRADDLE THE FENCE A BIT ON THIS ONE. THERE'S A LOT THAT WOULD SAY IT'S GLOBAL WARMING, BUT I MEAN, AGAIN, IF YOU TOOK AWAY THE LAKE, THE WATER, WHICH IS HAVING A MASSIVE IMPACT ON THE GLACIER, AND YOU DRAINED IT DOWN THE OTHER END AND HAD NO WATER IN HERE AND THERE WAS NO LAKE AT THE END, THEN THERE'S EVERY CHANCE THE TASMAN GLACIER WOULD ACTUALLY ADVANCE. WHATEVER THE CAUSE, IT'S HARD TO BLAME ANYONE OR ANYTHING FOR SOMETHING SO BEAUTIFUL. TO ADD TO THE ODDITY OF IT ALL, THE LAST TIME THIS HAPPENED WAS ON THE DAY OF THE CHRISTCHURCH EARTHQUAKE EXACTLY TWO YEARS AGO. OBVIOUSLY, THIS IS ALL ABOUT A RECORD-BREAKING SUMMER ` A GOLDEN ONE IF YOU LIKE BEING OUTDOORS, NOT SO MUCH IF YOU'RE A PARCHED FARM OWNER. JOINING US FROM THE WELLINGTON WATERFRONT ` DAN CORBETT FROM THE METSERVICE. DAN. Is there any rain on the way for farmers? With got a little bit, but nothing where it would all be done. Dan, Greg here. Is this part of a bigger picture, because it has been one of the warmest, driest summerS I can ever remember. It's always difficult to take weather systems and seasons and link them directly to global warming. The US have had a very warm summer. In parts of Europe, a similar sort of thing. It is happening, but to say it is directly related is difficult. It needs more research. We've had lots of anticyclone springing us fine, dry weather, and rain has been few and far between. It feels like the most cracking summer in living memory, is that the case? I'm from the UK, and when I first came here, people said if you get a fine day in Wellington, you're doing well. Everyone was jumping in the water, enjoying it, and people were saying they hadn't seen before. People were saying how long the fine spell was going on. The anticyclones have been like slow, stubborn oxes. Are people nicer in nice weather? For people looking for the rain, it's not great news. People have been smiling at me a bit more recently. What's the next couple of months got in store? We've been chatting with our friends at NIWA today. They look at the next few months. We look at the anticyclotic ridge that sits there. There are no big rainmakers like that one next week. There will be a bit here and there, and then as we go through the next two or three weeks, we'll start to see the highs weaken. That will bring back the typical lows that we see coming out of the Tasman Sea. We'll get back to the fine days, the weekdays, and then autumn. Does this mean we'll have a stinking weather? You've gone. STAY WITH US. JUST AFTER THE BREAK ` IF YOU WERE INTO '90S BOY BANDS, CHANCES ARE YOU WERE INTO THIS GUY. CRAIG STANAWAY WHACKS SOME BALLS WITH A FORMER MEMBER OF WESTLIFE. HE WAS PART OF A GROUP THAT SOLD MORE THAN 50 MILLION ALBUMS WORLDWIDE, INCLUDING 14 NUMBER-ONE SINGLES IN THE UK. BRIAN McFADDEN WAS MANY A TEENAGE GIRL'S DREAM IN THE '90s WITH IRISH GROUP WESTLIFE. AHEAD OF TONIGHT'S CONCERT IN AUCKLAND, HE RELAXED BY HEADING TO A DRIVING RANGE WITH CRAIG STANAWAY. YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT INTERVIEWING ROCK STARS. RICH, FAMOUS, JETLAGGED AND SICK, BRIAN MCFADDEN COULD'VE BEEN A REAL PAIN IN THE BACKSIDE TO TALK TO. FIVE HOURS OUT FROM HIS CONCERT, HE WAS ANYTHING BUT. SO, HOW OFTEN DO YOU PLAY GOLF? IT DEPENDS ON HOW BUSY OUR SCHEDULE IS. IF I'M AT HOME AND I'M OFF, I COULD PLAY FOUR OR FIVE TIMES A WEEK, BUT IT JUST NEVER HAPPENS ANY MORE. MCFADDEN'S GOT A COLD THANKS TO BEING IN IRELAND, WHERE IT'S MINUS-2 DEGREES. SO, DOES THAT AFFECT YOUR SINGING? IT DOES SOMETIMES. WHEN I GET THE SNIFFLES LIKE THAT IN THE MIDDLE OF A SONG AND YOU START TO FEEL THE SNOT RUNNING DOWN YOUR FACE AND YOU'RE HOLDING A GUITAR AND YOU MAKE THESE FACES ` THAT'S WHEN IT GETS DIFFICULT. FROM U2 TO ENYA TO SINEAD O'CONNOR, THE IRISH CAN SING. WHY ARE THE IRISH SO GOOD? I DON'T KNOW. SMALL POPULATION, MASSIVE TALENT. IT'S LIKE ASKING WHY NZ IS GOOD AT RUGBY. YOU'RE TINY AND YOU'VE GOT ONE OF THE BEST RUGBY TEAMS EVER. BUT IRISH MUSIC DOESN'T ALWAYS HIT THE MARK. I ACTUALLY WROTE THE IRISH ENTRY FOR THE EUROVISION IN 2004 AND IT CAME LAST, SO MY DREAM WAS SHATTERED, BUT AT LEAST I GOT TO GO. WAS IT WORSE THAN LOVELY HORSE? IT WAS THERE PROBABLY OR THEREABOUTS. THEY WOULD'VE BEEN ON PAR, I'D SAY. IT WOULDN'T HAVE HAD THE KINDA CLASSIC-NESS OF MY LOVELY HORSE, BUT, YEAH, IT WAS PRETTY RUBBISH. LOVELY HORSE, IF YOU DON'T KNOW, WAS A FICTITIOUS ENTRY TO THE EUROVISION SONG CONTEST MADE FAMOUS BY THE COMEDY 'FATHER TED'. DO MOST IRISH PEOPLE KNOW THE WORDS TO MY LOVELY HORSE? YEAH, IT'S, LIKE, OUR NEW NATIONAL ANTHEM. EVERYONE LOVES MY LOVELY HORSE. # MY LOVELY HORSE. # ESPECIALLY ALL THESE BIG SUPERMARKETS IN THE UK. IT'S BECOME NEW THEIR THEME TUNE, TALKING ABOUT THEIR BURGERS. FROM AWFUL TO AWESOME ` YOU'LL BE SURPRISED TO LEARN WHAT HE THINKS IS THE GREATEST SONG EVER WRITTEN. SOUND OF SILENCE ` SIMON AND GARFUNKEL. INTERESTING. WHY THAT? I DON'T KNOW. IT'S JUST ONE OF THOSE MOST HAUNTING SONGS, HAUNTING LYRICS. # HEAR MY WORDS THAT I MIGHT TEACH YOU... # IT'S A SONG THAT NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES YOU LISTEN TO IT, IT STILL DOES SOMETHING TO YOU. MCFADDEN (33) IS MARRIED AGAIN, TO IRISH DJ VOGUE WILLIAMS, AFTER HIGH-PROFILE BREAKUPS WITH FORMER ATOMIC KITTEN KERRY KATONA AND DELTA GOODREM. IT'S NOT SOMETHING` I DIDN'T GO OUT EVERY TIME AND SAY, 'RIGHT, 'I'VE GOT TO HAVE A HIGH-PROFILE GIRLFRIEND TO BE IN THE LIMELIGHT.' THAT'S THE JOBS WE DO, AND THE CHANCES AND THE OPPORTUNITIES WE HAVE TO MEET PEOPLE ARE NORMALLY WORK-RELATED OPPORTUNITIES, SO, YOU KNOW... I MET KERRY ON TOUR, I MET DELTA WHEN WE RECORDED A DUET, AND I MET VOGUE AT A FUNCTION. IS MARRIAGE BETTER THE SECOND TIME AROUND? YEAH, I THINK YOU LEARN FROM THE FIRST TIME. YOU LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES, AND, YOU KNOW, I THINK IT'S QUITE IMPORTANT IN MARRIAGE THAT YOU WORK AT GIVING EACH OTHER TIME. AS FOR THE GOLF, THERE WAS ALWAYS GOING TO BE A COMPETITION. FIRST THROUGH THE RUGBY POSTS. THWACK! IS IT GOOD? AND THEN CLOSEST TO THE FLAG. HONOURS EVEN. OUR TIME WAS OVER. REALLY ENJOYABLE. LET'S HOPE WE GET A PROPER ROUND NEXT TIME. THE FULL 18. THANKS, MATE. THAT'S SEVEN SHARP FOR WEDNESDAY. SEE YOU TOMORROW. CAPTIONS BY FAITH HAMBLYN AND HUGO SNELL. CAPTIONS WERE MADE POSSIBLE WITH FUNDING FROM NZ ON AIR.
