  • 2The best result a Te Arawa Haka group could manage on stage at Te Matatini Kapa Haka this year was seventh place with five of their six teams missing out on top nine spots. But it is Te Arawa's performance off stage that has had spectators talking. More than 400 official volunteers from Te Arawa and the wider Rotorua community were part of Te Matatine, but it is the unofficial count of volunteers, who number in the thousands, whose work often goes unnoticed. A look at how much these volunteers contribute to the success of Te Matatini. Te Matatini is all about the forty one teams on the stage. Why do the performers do it? What do they get out of it? Is all the time and effort involved worthwhile? Interview with Te Rina Shepherd who has joined Te Whanau a Apanui about the emotional, physical and financial cost to her in order to do what she loves.
