  • 1Thanks to the generosity of New Zealanders, New Zealand Vernon Gardiner man who faced 20 years in a Filipino jail is now a free man. When reporter Sarah Hall traveled to the Philippines for last month's story, she discovered Vernon would be released if only he could repay his debts. So armed with New Zealand money, she returned to Virac, on the island of Catanduanes, and sure enough, within a few hours, Vernon was free.
