ONE NEWS CAPTIONS BY DESNEY SHAW AND JOHN LING. CAPTIONS WERE MADE POSSIBLE WITH FUNDING FROM NZ ON AIR. COPYRIGHT TVNZ ACCESS SERVICES 2013 DUE TO THE LIVE NATURE OF SEVEN SHARP, WE APOLOGISE FOR THE LACK OF CAPTIONS FOR SOME ITEMS. Welcome. Tonight, free Wi-Fi could cost you an absolute fortune. How to avoid being hacked. Ali's not here. She's in south Auckland. Rather loud here. I'M AT THE PACIFIC MUSIC AWARDS. THE THEME IS HONOURING PACIFIC WOMEN, AND WE HAVE AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH THE WOMAN OF THE HOUR, AARADHNA. YOU'LL KNOW THIS SONG. # WAKE UP. # WAKE UP. # WAKE UP. # GET UP. # GET UP. # GET UP. # GET OUT OF BED. # Also tonight, room of those comments from John key a couple of weeks ago about Wellington being a dying city? I wondered whether there was anything Wellington could learn from my hometown. We will take you to Melbourne. We have someone from the huge show Revenge here tonight. Gabriel Mann, who plays Nolan Ross, is here. IT'S THURSDAY NIGHT. WELCOME TO SEVEN SHARP. If you think cyber crime, usually think of a sophisticated internatinoal operation it could just be a dodgy guy sitting at the table next to you robbing you blind. Here's Heather. WHAT SHALL WE GOOGLE? (LAUGHS) YOU CAN'T SPELL GOOGLE. WHAT!? YOU MISSED THE SECOND DOT. HOW CAN YOU TELL THAT? 'OBVIOUSLY, HE'S HACKED ME.' NOW YOU'RE ON TWITTER YOU'RE JOKING! THIS IS WHAT YOU'RE DOING. YOU CAN SEE THAT I'VE DISPLAYED A MESSAGE? 'YEP... AND SOME.' E-MEDICINE, HEALTH, DANDRUFF. (LAUGHS) JUST FOR THE RECORD, I DON'T ACTUALLY HAVE DANDRUFF. (LAUGHS) I DON'T JUDGE. THAT IS HOW EASY IT IS TO HACK SOMEONE USING FREE, OPEN WIFI. IT'S THE KIND OF WIFI YOU FIND IN CAFES, CITY SQUARES AND LIBRARIES, AND WHERE I'M SITTING, THERE'S ABOUT HALF A DOZEN TO CHOOSE FROM. TO JEHAN CASINADER. NOW, MY HACKER IS AT A NEARBY TABLE TO MAKE IT EASIER TO FILM, BUT IN REAL LIFE, HE COULD BE AS FAR AWAY AS THE WIFI ZONE WE'RE IN WILL LET HIM GO. SENDING NOW. THERE'S A RUMOUR THAT YOU'VE BEEN FIRED. IT'S TRUE, ISN'T IT? (LAUGHS) I SAID THAT TO JEHAN. THIS IS WHAT MY WEB SURFING LOOKS LIKE TO DANIEL AYERS. AND THERE IS THE EMAIL I SENT TO JEHAN ONLY MOMENTS EARLIER. I CAN SEE THAT YOU'RE TALKING TO YAHOO. I CAN SEE THAT YOU'VE BEEN TALKING TO AIR NZ, BOOKING YOUR FLIGHTS HOME. I CAN SEE YOU DOING GOOGLE SEARCHES, SUCH AS FOR CERTAIN CELEBRITY NAMES HERE. 'LOOK, THIS ISN'T ROCKET SCIENCE. 'DANIEL'S ONLY USING A PROGRAMME WE CAN ALL DOWNLOAD FROM THE NET, 'AND ANY HALFWITTED HACKER CAN DO THIS.' OBVIOUSLY, WE ARE BEING CAREFUL TO OBEY THE LAW, SO WE'RE ONLY LISTENING TO YOUR COMMUNICATIONS. IF SOMEONE WAS BREAKING THE LAW, THEY WILL, OF COURSE, BE ABLE TO LISTEN TO WHAT EVERYBODY'S DOING, AND IF YOU THEN DO KEYWORD SEARCHES, THAT'S WHERE IT BECOMES VERY DANGEROUS. SO IF YOU'RE DOING KEYWORD SEARCHES FOR BANK, CREDIT CARD, THEN IT'LL JUST POP OUT. SEE, NOW, THAT'S WHAT'S REALLY WORRYING, BECAUSE IF YOU'RE LIKE ME, SOMETIMES YOU WILL HAVE TO DO YOUR BANKING AND EMAILING ON FREE, OPEN WIFI, LIKE WHEN YOU'RE OVERSEAS AND YOU DON'T WANT TO RACK UP A HUGE DATA BILL. YEAH, TALK ABOUT TRAVELLING. THERE ARE LOTS OF PLACES WHERE, YOU KNOW, CYBER CRIMINALS MAKE A GOOD LIVING OUT OF SETTING UP FAKE WIRELESS HOTSPOTS AND THEN RECORDING ALL THE TRAFFIC THAT PEOPLE DO ON THEM. SO WE'VE GOT A FEW TIPS ON HOW TO KEEP SAFE. FIRSTLY, IF YOU'RE GOING TO USE FREE WIFI, TRY TO STICK TO FREE WIFI THAT'S ENCRYPTED. YOU'LL KNOW IT'S ENCRYPTED BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO ENTER A PASSWORD. IF YOU DO DO YOUR BANKING ON FREE WIFI, UPDATE YOUR COMPUTER'S SAFETY SETTINGS AND CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD REGULARLY. AND DON'T JUST BE CAREFUL OVERSEAS; BE CAREFUL IN LITTLE OLD NZ TOO. AND JUST IN CASE YOU WEREN'T ALREADY IMPRESSED BY WHAT OUR HACKER COULD DO... LAST NIGHT, MY PRODUCER GOT AN EMAIL FROM MY EMAIL ACCOUNT THAT I DIDN'T SEND. IT SEEMS THE HACKING DIDN'T END AT THE CAFE, SO I'M DELETING MY EMAIL ACCOUNT ALTOGETHER. HE BASICALLY GOT THE INFORMATION THAT HE NEEDED TO GET INTO MY ACCOUNT FROM THAT SESSION WHERE I WAS USING THE FREE WIFI HE DID TRY TO WARN ME. IF I HAD A LITTLE BIT MORE TIME, I COULD SIT HERE AND PICK UP THE COOKIE OUT OF YOUR WEB SESSION THAT I'VE GOT HERE AND THEN GO IN AND PRETEND TO BE YOU ON YAHOO AND SEND EMAILS UNDER YOUR NAME. WE THINK WE'RE SO CLEVER WITH ALL OUR NEWFANGLED TECHNOLOGY, BUT MAYBE THOSE OLD SAYINGS ARE STILL WORTH LISTENING TO. MAYBE THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A FREE LUNCH, OR WIFI CONNECTION, AND IF IT'S TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, MAYBE IT IS. Nzers go to free wi fi spots quite a bit, simply because roaming data very expensive. The onus is on telcos to make that more affordable. If you are still worried, you should download a virtual private network. Our computer whiz described itas building your own little tunnel through the Internet. That means you won't get bad stuff. That is the quickest way to fix things and make sure you are safeguarded. This stuff does happen in NZ. Colin Craig's Twitter account got hacked last week. They knew was attacked when he tweeted something reasonable. All this is also true of your Wi-Fi at home. If you don't have a password, someone can sit outside your house and see what you are doing. I am a computer numpty if you look for HTTS, you're pretty safe. We have plenty of tips on staying safe on our website. They are from Netsafe. We're talking about VPN. Ali's more concerned about VPL. Come in Ali. Did you get that amazing joke? I can't hear what you're saying, Jesse. I've got no idea what is going on. It is quite loud. We're hoping to have our main talent here in a moment. She is just parking her car. She is the most nominated artist in the history of the Pacific music awards. We'll be talking to her in a minute. I heard the joke. I thought it was impressive. Welcome back. We are in Manukau, South Auckland. With me is Aaradhna. I want to remind you, she is a friend of the programme. She was on in the first week we were on air. Here's a little reminder of her beautiful performance. # WAKE UP. # GET UP. GET UP. # GET OUT OF BED. # STOP WASTING TIME. # TIME. # I never get sick of hearing that voice. Welcome. You have just got here to NZ Tell me about the last-minute decision to come back. We thought we can't miss this event. Being nominated for a few awards. I had to make it and enjoy the celebration right here. 'A few'? Five awards. The most ever since they were instigated. I guess so. It's pretty exciting? Last time we saw you, you are about to go overseas. You just signed a huge deal. You have moved to New York. What's it like? It's been amazing. Every day has been really eventful and really productive, and just meeting everybody at the record company has been awesome. Has just been around the meetings? What have you been doing? Meeting them and doing a few interviews and little showcases here and there. It has been pretty fun. New York clubs? It's pretty awesome. There's so much to do there. It's too big over there. You have been nominated for a music video awards night too. I understand you have been shooting videos over in New York as well. I did three in the past weekend, which was pretty hectic. Two on the Saturday, then one with P Money. Is It a different process over there? It's pretty much the same. We were just in a bit of a rush. We're really glad you're here. Five nominations tonight. Best of luck in there. We're cheering for you. Have a great night. Thanks, Aaradhna. There is something else I to talk to you about. I know you saw earlier in the week that Australians have been found to be the happiest people in an industrialised nation in the world. Being an Australian, this doesn't surprise me. Why wouldn't you be happy if you grew up in a place at Melbourne? Problem is I don't remember Melbourne being that flash at the time. In the light of comments from John key recently, we thought we would go to Melbourne and find if there is anything Wellington might learn. IT DOESN'T LOOK LIKE IT NOW, BUT THIS PLACE WAS ONCE A DYING CITY. THAT SOUNDS FAMILIAR, DOESN'T IT? IF I'VE OFFENDED THEM, THEN I UNRESERVEDLY APOLOGISE. I GREW UP HERE. THIS IS MY HOME TOWN, AND TO BE HONEST, I REMEMBER IT AS BEING PRETTY BORING. BUT THINGS HAVE CHANGED. IT WAS ONCE THE NERDY SIBLING LIVING IN SYDNEY'S SHADOW; NOW THIS CITY'S SO COOL, I BARELY RECOGNISE IT. GET YOU, MELBOURNE, WITH YOUR CAFES AND YOUR NIGHTLIFE, ALL YOUR SPORTS AND ARTS-CULTURE. MELBOURNE HAS A LIFE AND A SOUL. THAT ONE THING THAT I HAVEN'T FOUND ANYWHERE ELSE IN AUSTRALIA. IT'S SO URBAN AND COOL. MELBOURNE'S GOT SWAG. NICE TO MEET YOU. THIS IS THE GUY WHO GAVE MELBOURNE ITS SWAG. BEAUTIFUL DAY. AREN'T WE LUCKY? WHAT DO YOU EXPECT? DURING HIS SEVEN YEARS IN GOVERNMENT, JEFF KENNETT'S HUGE GROWTH PROGRAMME TRANSFORMED THE PLACE. MELBOURNE WAS FAIRLY TIRED, LACKING MORALE, AND I SUSPECT A BIT LIKE YOUR PRIME MINISTER, JOHN KEY, IS CURRENTLY DESCRIBING WELLINGTON. YOU SAID IT WAS STUFFED. DID I SAY THAT WORD? YEAH. STUFFED. (CHUCKLES) SOUNDS LIKE MY LANGUAGE, YES. WHEN THIS NO-BS LEADER SWEPT TO POWER IN 1992, HE HAD AN AGENDA. WE WERE ABOUT DELIVERING. STEP ONE: NICK A WORLD-CLASS EVENT FROM ANOTHER CITY ` IN THIS CASE, THE AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX. WE HAD TO SHUT UP ABOUT IT FOR ABOUT 12 MONTHS BEFORE WE COULD TELL THE PUBLIC THAT WE'D ACTUALLY SECURED IT. SO LIKE THIEVES IN THE NIGHT? ABSOLUTELY. (LAUGHS) BUT WELLINGTON'S ALREADY PINCHED THE WORLD OF WEARABLE ARTS EVENT FROM NELSON, AND, LIKE MELBOURNE, SPORT IS IN ITS DNA. OK, STEP TWO: BUILD STUFF; BIG STUFF. NEW ROADS AND BRIDGES, A MAJOR CASINO AND ENTERTAINMENT PRECINCT, A NEW CITY SQUARE... A BRAND SPANKING MUSEUM. AND NO WORRIES IF THE NEW DOESN'T EXACTLY MATCH THE OLD. BUT, AGAIN, WELLINGTON'S BEEN THERE AND DONE THIS. UH, BACK TO YOU, JOHN. IN THE CONTEXT OF WHAT I WAS SAYING ABOUT PRIVATE-SECTOR HEAD OFFICES, A LOT OF THEM HAVE, OVER THE LAST 30 YEARS, LEFT WELLINGTON. HE'S RIGHT. IT'S THE PUBLIC SERVICE THAT'S THE BEATING HEART OF WELLINGTON, AS IT ONCE WAS IN MELBOURNE. WE HAD TO DEAL WITH A BLOATED BUREAUCRACY. BUT YOU CAN'T HOPE TO GROW SOMETHING UNLESS YOU'RE PREPARED TO CUT BUT ALSO GROW. AND CUT HE DID,... YOU MONGREL! ...GUTTING THE PUBLIC SERVICE, SELLING OFF ASSETS AND COSYING UP TO THE PRIVATE SECTOR. FOR 50,000 STATE EMPLOYEES WHO'D LOSE THEIR JOBS IT WAS A BITTER PILL TO SWALLOW. ALL CHANT: SIEG HEIL. WHICH BRINGS US TO STEP THREE: THE PEOPLE DON'T LIKE IT? IGNORE 'EM. YES, THERE WERE PROTESTS AND RALLIES, ETC. WE WERE NEVER WORRIED ABOUT THE SHORT TERM. I MEAN, IT MATTERS NOT TO ME WHAT PEOPLE THINK OF JEFF KENNETT. WHAT IT DOES MATTER TO ME IS THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE CITY. SO WELLINGTON'S GOT THE CULTURE, GOT THE SPORT, GOT THE SWAG. IT MIGHTN'T BE DYING, BUT MAYBE IT DOES NEED TO CHANGE. YOU CAN'T STAND STILL. IF YOU STAND STILL, YOU GET OVERTAKEN ` PEOPLE BECOME COMPLACENT, PEOPLE GET BORED. LIFE'S CHANGING. Guys, did I sound really Australian? I was listening to it. 'A beeter peel'. While we were in Melbourne and since we came back, I have talked to Victorians about Jeff Kennett and the changes in Melbourne, and they are all still really peed off with him. He close 330 schools and tourist wave through the public service. Even a time later, people hate him. He obviously did some stuff which has had a positive impact. As someone who lived in Wellington to years, Wellingtonians will be watching and say they have 40 had their turnaround. The point Ali is making a deacon or is ask what is next. Maybe they should look at again and say what is next for Wellington. He is a very abrasive character. 'Nice day.' 'What did you expect?' Manners! I went to Australia to talk to Peter Garrett of midnight oil. That's it. Just wanted to drop the name. After the break, we have one of the stars of Revenge CAR REVS Good, good, good. (SIGHS) CRUNCHING, SQUEAKING (SIGHS) Well, did you pass? Well, did you pass? Yep. Well, did you pass? Yep. Whoo-hoo! Yee-hah-hah! Don't bail out just yet. Your teen is more likely to crash on their restricted than any other time in their life. Go to safeteendriver.co.nz. Find out how you can stay involved. Welcome back. We are teaching our guest NZisms. He is the star of the TV to show revenge. Huge show. He plays a billionaire playboy and tech geek. YOU THINK WE COULD BE DEALING WITH ANOTHER TYLER? TYLER WAS SICK. ELI IS A WILD CARD. BUT IF HE FIGURES OUT WHO I AM, HE COULD RUIN EVERYTHING. MM, WELL, I'LL CHECK HIM OUT. AS LONG AS PADMA'S IN A HOLDING PATTERN WITH THE INITIATIVE, IT'D BE A WELCOME DISTRACTION. Welcome. I can't get past 'sex on toast'. You used to live here and work here. I had the pleasure of getting to work on Legend of the Seeker, shot in and around Auckland. Every time I came to NZ, I said I would get a house and stay. I never imagined I would be back here talking about another show. What did you miss most about us? Flat whites, bro. Australia does okay ones, but doesn't compare to the NZ flat white. Ratings aside, when did you know what hit revenge was? The moment I knew was that it was when Entertainment Weekly, the big entertainment magazine, the weekly column from the author Stephen King. He said revenge was his favourite show. That is the seal of approval. The Stephen King is watching revenge, we're good. It's all about taking revenge. Is there anyone in your past you want to take revenge on? Now that I'm a little bit older and wiser in my life, I have to say I am probably a bigger subscriber to karma. Karma's no fun. Watch 'Karma'. Or not. (SNORES) That's why a show like revenge probably has the kind of international appeal it does. It is a universal subject. But we're not a textbook on how to get revenge. We do it so you don't have to. FROM AN AMERICAN HERE TO A KIWI THERE. JACK TAME. AH. GIDDAY, GUYS. WELCOME TO CENTRAL PARK. NOT A BAD WEE VIEW, IS IT? NOW, I'VE BROUGHT YOU HERE ON A BIT OF A LUNCH BREAK THIS WEEK, COS I WANT TO INTRODUCE YOU TO A FOOD THAT'S TAKING NORTH AMERICA BY STORM. NOW, I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE THINKING ` COS IT'S NEW YORK, IT'S PROBABLY A BAGEL WITH A BIG SMEAR OF CREAM CHEESE. NAH. OR, FOR THE EVEN MORE HEALTH-CONSCIOUS, A WARM, FRESH DOUGHNUT WITH PINK ICING AND SPRINKLES. I WISH. NO, NO, IT'S ACTUALLY A BREAKFAST CEREAL, AND A BIT OF A FUNNY ONE AT THAT. YES, IT'S CALLED SEXCEREAL ` THE FIRST-EVER CEREAL BEING MARKETED AS AN APHRODISIAC. (CHUCKLES) IT'S A MUESLI THAT PROMISES TO KEEP YOU REGULAR IN WAYS THAT OTHER MUESLI CAN'T. I'VE HAD A BIT OF A GLANCE THROUGH THE INGREDIENTS TO TRY TO GET SOME SORT OF A TIP AS TO WHAT THE SPECIAL INGREDIENTS THAT APPARENTLY, UH,... (CHUCKLES) 'HELP YOU FUEL YOUR FIRE' MIGHT BE. UH, ROLLED OATS ` PRETTY STANDARD; COCONUT, SUGAR ` PRETTY STANDARD; APPARENTLY, THOUGH, THE MARKETERS SAY THE KEY INGREDIENT IS STUFF CALLED MACA POWDER THAT COMES ALL THE WAY FROM PERU. THERE'S SOMETHING ELSE CALLED KAMU KAMU THAT I'M REALLY NO EXPERT ON. I DON'T THINK THEY HAVE THAT IN YOUR STANDARD COCOA PUFFS. NO. AND AT ABOUT 15 BUCKS A PACK ` 15 BUCKS FOR 300G ` I THINK I'M GONNA STICK WITH MY CORNFLAKES. We thought Jack was having a song about that. But it is the real thing. Is that what your character eats? He sleeps with just about anybody in everyone. No, but I think Emily van camp is feeding it to us. I've heard of this powder. It must be why everyone is so randy. We asked some questions on Facebook. Not a great questions. The most popular was what is the secret of looking young? Youthful spirit. How old are you? 41. And genetics. you're a model as well. How were you discovered? I was in New York. I had done my first independent film. I was looking strange and had long dreadlocks. Someone thought It was intriguing. Now you're a style icon. The double polo shirt. Has it caught on? It has. It wasn't a joke, but wasn't intentional initially. That wasn't a character choice. I just came out of my trailer with two shirts on for a laugh. To both your shirts and you, thank you for coming. Enjoy your flat white. THAT'S OUR SHOW FOR THURSDAY. CAPTIONS BY RICHARD EDMUNDS AND FINN SCOTT-KELLY.
