The body of Maureen Te Rangi Rere-i-waho Waaka has been sent to its final resting place. Over 600 people attended the last day to farewell one of Te Arawa and Tuwharetoa's matriarchs' this morning. According to her only son, his mother was a hard-working woman. On a fine day, Te Papaiouru Marae was flooded with acknowledgements for Maureen Te Rangi Rere-i-waho Waaka. Her cousin, Tumu Te Heuheu, led Tuwharetoa on to pay their respects, along with various NZ City councils. Since her passing on Monday, after suffering a stroke, thousands have flocked to pay tribute. In tributes she was said to be a woman who encouraged her people, a diligent worker and a beauty. But her son says she's always been a hard-worker. It was also her ability to fight, and push for the issues she valued for the benefit of the people. Her many walks in life, through culture, tourism, local politics, health, and much, much more, led her across the globe. A journey that began here in Ohinemutu, is also where her journey ends. A legacy for her many descendants. Her body will be laid to rest up at Kauae Cemetery. Kereama Wright, Te Karere. Ex-Maori Party MP Rahui Katene is aiming for a comeback. She now lives in Te Tai Hauauru electorate and wants to stand for the seat once Tariana Turia steps down. According to their annual report, the iwi's net worth has grown by nearly $50 million over that last financial year. The Waikato-Tainui people are getting richer. It seems they are walking the talk when it comes to their business plan. There are really good investments being made on behalf of the people of Waikato Tainui to ensure a prosperous future. Rahui Papa is the spokesperson for the commercial arm of the tribe is excited. As the results contained within these pages highlight. Yes we should be looking to long-term strategies, but we also have to ensure we are meeting short-term goals that lift the spirits and trust of our people. And Te Awa here in Hamilton is a great example of one of those sound business investments. We are doing well because of Tainui Group Holdings under the leadership of Sir Henry van der Heyden and CEO Mike Pohio. If the tribe's plans to build an inland port here at Ruakura get the environmental green light, then there will be between 6,000 and 12,000 new jobs created. 2,000 homes will be built to house those working at the inland port. Through this project the Waikato GDP will hit $4.4 billion. It's these types of investments why the Tainui canoe is well afloat, it's about investing in the now. Also boosting tribal books, the Treaty relativity clause has been active, topping up the tribe significantly. The relativity clause in our settlement from 1995 was triggered, and we were topped up another $70 million dollars. The company therefore intends to invest in a limited number of property development projects and private companies over the next three to five years. Roihana Nuri, Te Karere. Emotions ran high as families spoke of the heart-breaking effects of the Pike River Tragedy at the sentencing of Pike River Coal today. 20 victim impact statements were read, and most blamed Pike River for killing their husbands, partners, sons and children, and for taking responsibility for their actions. Pike River Coal was found guilty of nine health and safety charges. Each carries a maximum penalty of $250,000. Victoria University has a reputation for being one of the country's most highly ranked places of study. But one student has brought their cultural ethics in to question after confronting a staff member for ridiculing another student with what she referred to as a ridiculous long-winded Maori name. Tehani Buchanan was furious when she overheard a conversation between some staff members at Victoria University. At that point she was beyond angry, approached her and said she was offended and thought her behaviour was unprofessional. So Tehani went to see the Head of the School who eventually met with her on the issue She also approached the Maori department seeking support on the issue. In a meeting between Tehani Buchanan and the Head of the School, he assured Tehani he would look in to the matter and get back to her in due course. But Tehani hasn't heard from anybody since. However, in a written statement sent to us this afternoon from the Head of School of History Ken Perszky, he said; This student hopes to spread the word of the importance of Maori names. Now we take another look at some of NZ's Maori place names. The Hastings district has a long history of a food producing region in the fertile plains surrounding the city. Consisting of an abundance of stone fruit, vegetables, it has become the base of NZ's red wine industry. The first European to see the future site of Napier was Captain James Cook who sailed down the East Coast in October 1769. Literally translated, Taupo-nui-a-Tia means the great cloak of Tia. Tia was the discoverer of the lake in ancient times. It is traditionally recorded that one of the great fighting chiefs of the Ngati Kahupungapunga, Tokoroa, was slain by Ngati Raukawa during the siege of Pohaturoa. The name Rotorua comes from Maori. The full name being Te Rotorua-nui-a-Kahumatamomoe. Rotorua means 'Second lake'. Kahumatamomoe was the uncle of the Maori chief Ihenga, the ancestral explorer of the Te Arawa.
