In a funny kind of way, it feels like just another day. This is the course that we have seen time and time again. It is hard to believe that we here. There is the boss, Larry Ellison. He would rather be out on the water. I understand he cancelled his keynote speaking engagement at Oracle World. The delegates streamed out because the man of the moment wasn't there. What about the mindset of these two guys? Jimmy Spithill and the bluster that he has. Deano seems to never change, but you wonder what is going through his mind. This is the greatest America's Cup of all time. We made the point some time ago, if you were team New Zealand six months ago, and you said this would happen, would be some laughter. There is an after guard meeting taking place here. Martin, this comes down to how the skippers are going to be judged in the history books of America's Cup. It will come down to this race. There will be a winner in a loser, and that's how they will be judged in the history books. It has been evenly matched, but it has been Jimmy Spithill, Ben Ainslie, and Tom Slingsby. Amazing how the fortunes have shifted. Huge weight of expectation on Barker. He is pretty cool, calm and collected for someone who has been under enormous pressure over the last seven days. He will be physically and mentally tired. If normal mortals lie awake staring at the ceiling at night, how does he keep his calm? How much is this another day? This is the last race. Team New Zealand have pulled the trigger. They are on their run into the pre-start. Who will hold their nerve? The next 2 min could be the telling who will win N We now look at Oracle coming around. At 1 min 30 to go, we would expect Team New Zealand he backed the line. How aggressive will Jimmy Spithill be? The options now. How will they play out? Plenty of breeze. Look at Aotearoa sitting up there. The next move will be Oracle. How will they set up? It looks like Oracle are going to leverage to windward. Back into the famous time on distance in this America's Cup decider. 10 to the line. Oracle, a lot of separation. That is the strategy that Jimmy Spithill has employed. They have put the bow down and charging Emirates team New Zealand. Oracle are probably now locked into the windward side. Team New Zealand are now on the leeward side. It is about how they use the next 18 seconds. It is about the starting package. Who has the dominance on the line? As they come up to the line, the final races under way! Oracle up on the foils. Who was going to get there? The looks like Team New Zealand have the advantage. Team New Zealand have the left-hand side. Oracle have fallen off the foils. Team New Zealand gets a bit of a advantage. A huge moment for Oracle. When they hit that zone around Mark one. Nice recovery, says Ben Ainslie. Great start for Dean Barker. Americans are straight back into it. It was a good recovery by Oracle. The pace of these boats again. Both are in the 40 kn now. There has been discussion overnight about the foiling downwind. Adam Beashel is looking down at the foil. Team New Zealand are holding the 40 m advantage they will be heading out to the left hand side. It is still a minute away to the boundary. Look at Dean. Look at that body language. Rob Waddell is grunting away at the grinders. If Oracle is going to win this one, it will be a come from behind. Can team New Zealand defend? Here is the boundary. Both boats are required to gybe. Look how close this is. That is the dirty air that is being laid down on to the American boat by the Kiwi boat. The New Zealand boat is off the foils. This is the closest racing we have had. This is just extraordinary. The naysayers are having to eat their words about whether these boats can race. This is a thriller. What Ray Davies wants to try and do here the set the bottom Mark so that Oracle follows them through, avoiding that split at the bottom mark. I don't know thought was a grin or a grimace. This is all on. It is about calm heads. Some cool thinking. We're getting down to the bottom third. Tom Slingsby is calling the gybe. The Kiwis are on the lay line, looking like they are going for the right-hand mark. For Oracle to split at this bottom Mark, that is quite a big manoeuver. Are we going to see another split at the bottom Mark? Yeah, we are. Team New Zealand are committed to the right. Oracle are going to the left. Make a nice one, boys. Around come team New Zealand. This is where it all played out rather badly yesterday. They have tacked immediately. Slow out of the tack, but building up speed now. Oracle are at 23 kn. New Zealand are now in phase and a matching it with Oracle. I don't want to see a leeward tack situation. Four, three, two, one. Here we go. Watch this strategy for team New Zealand. Not a good tack by Oracle! I see the boat buried. Oracle are dipping team New Zealand. It is close. I think this up wind now is going to turn into a bit of a drag race. Team New Zealand are committed to the city front. Nothing in it. The Kiwis are on 28 kn and the Americans are on 27 kn. The Kiwis coming back towards the boundary, heeding backout towards the city front towards Oracle. (SIGHS) This is an extraordinary race. For Oracle to win this, they have to sail around team New Zealand. Here they go. The techniques they have learnt over the months. It was a pretty nice tack, that one. I am looking at my animation. It is very close. Oracle go ahead. New Zealand will be required to dip. We have a lead change. They have ridden around the front of Emirates team New Zealand. Oracle are up on the foils. They have shown very good speed to get around Emirates team New Zealand. Three, two, one. Here we go. When they get up on the foils, I wonder if they are going to employ this gadget. Stability augmentation system. SAS. The next cross is big. Can team New Zealand have a cross? Oracle have the pace. Big cross coming from portend. Oracle are ahead. They have made it stick. They have put the turbo on again. They are coming towards the boundary area again. Here come the Kiwis coming back again. Can they somehow get some speed out of Aotearoa to match the Americans? The boys are on the pumps, grinding away. Oracle are showing raw pace. Is what we saw yesterday. What will the tactic it be now? It is an interesting manoeuver. Oracle are clear ahead now by a long way. All New Zealand can do is keep in contact. Oracle are working; team New Zealand are working. All they can do is work hard and trying to keep it close. Raw speed. Absolute raw speed on the American boat. Absolute pure speed with the gadgets there are stabilising them up. They are coming now to face the Kiwis. It has been a big gain on the left to Oracle. I'm afraid this one is pace. I have not seen a technical mistake. Oracle have more tools to play with. They have an automatic levelling system. They push the button and the boat foils. For New Zealand, it is a manually operated system. I am afraid, it is not as effective. Oracle are showing technology. The Kiwi boat is flying, but it is a little bit too late too late. You have to keep the pressure on. You can't ask any more of team New Zealand. They led off the line. Beautiful tack. It is looking all Oracle at the moment. Has this played its way out yet? We hope not. Oracle are just extending on each cross. Raw power and raw speed. We go back to Brad Butterworth's famous quote in 2010. 'Did you not watch that? Speed. Speed with a capital S.' I am in full agreement. This has been a test up leg three and team New Zealand have not been able to match the technology of Oracle. You do wonder what has gone on the last few weeks for this colossal gain to be made. It is the size of the machine. There is nothing more the Kiwi boys could have done. The way they sailed this race, they could not have done more. This is a graphic example of where technology has won the day. I don't think we have ever seen the Kiwi boat foil so fast up wind, but they are not making a difference. They are not giving In there. Oracle understanding the SAS system. It is automated. There was a device about 40 years ago called little Herbies. It does what you say. A trims faster and quicker than human. That was investigated by the jury and they said it is legal. It is what it is, and what it is is extremely fast. The America's Cup is won by technology. The ability to foil is done essentially automatically for them by computer science. There is a hallmark of Oracle. The boss' toys have won the day. Oracle with the huge resources of Larry Ellison. They have come up with a system very late in the America's Cup that looks like it will carry them to victory. We still have the notorious danger zone to negotiate at the top of the course and there is still a little way to go, but this is looking rather ominous. Oracle have blown Team New Zealand away on this leg. It is very clever hardware and software. It is about aeronautical science. There will be a long, ongoing analysis. The Oracle machine always does look clean as a whistle. There will be a big debrief. This is probably the last time we are going to see these machines. They learned that technique initially from Emirates Team New Zealand and mastered it. Here is the difference between the automatic and manual system. You watch Emirates Team New Zealand come around three now. It is a manual system, and it is harder for the boat to get on to that initial flight because it is being done by the crew members. They are still battling here, these Kiwis. Good on them. Throwing everything they can at Oracle. If there was any justice in the world, there would be an enormous puff of wind now. They look so clean there. A different class of boat. I cannot fault team NZ's crew for its performance today. It has purely come down to a boat speed test, and Oracle Team USA in this condition have a faster boat. Look at that look of utter satisfaction on Jimmy Spithill space. CORRECTION: face we are being asked not to get too consumed with all the stuff that he is saying. We have seen the big difference that Ben Ainslie and Tom Slingsby have made. But we're down to a technology race, and despite the best efforts by these guys, they have been found wanting. That is not the best gybe team NZ has ever done. It is Oracle, really, with their ability to automatically fly on the foils. That only came right at the beginning of the America's Cup and with the calibration of working the system, we have learnt those are the inroads that Oracle have made in the America's Cup. The physicistS and scientists are going to win the day here. The implications that we're seeing here are just an absolute pure speed. The team NZ in this last race, they won the start and were ahead at mark 1. It was just pure upwind speed at Marh 3 that has given this one to Spithill. Years of work has come down to this One minute blast. It's a working all the way to the end. I'm sure they will. Great display by these guys. It is a huge comeback story, and it is all about Jimmy Spithill. He knows the gybe is done. IT is Ben Ainslie of the crew that has made the difference. But in the end, it is the technology that the crew have been able to tap into. I think we knew that the Kiwis know about it, but by then it was too late for the boat to do something similar. You can hear the cheers starting up on the pier already. This is going to be a monumental homerun for the home team. Oracle are on the lay line to mark four. They will head towards America's Cup Park. Oracle head around Mark 4 to win the America's Cup. It has been a rocky road for Oracle Team USA. They have negotiated in style. It has been the greatest comeback in the history of this amazing cup. Jimmy Spithill is on the way to handing the trophy back to the man whose vision has become a reality. Larry Ellison has promised us the most spectacular event in a long time. And he certainly delivered it. The Stars & Stripes are waiting for them. Larry Ellison has made history. Oracle Team USA coming down to win the last race of the 34th America's Cup. They have represented the golden gate yacht club. They will reatin the America's Cup. Understandable glee on the American boat. I would not expect anything different. They have seize the day and taken the whole picture and Took that for themselves. For Emirates Team New Zealand, it has been a case of so near, so far. But in this David and Goliath battle, the giant machine has finally prevailed. It was all that they could do, and was not quite enough. Oracle Team USA win. Team NZ, hold your heads high. It has been a fantastic effort. Not quite good enough. They did not develop to the same degree as the cup unfolded. The swagger of Oracle has won the day. Jimmy Spithill promise that they would fight, and they did. But it is the technology, in my mind, that won the day. How it was calibrated through the America's Cup and got better and better. I am looking at that boy in the middle there and thinking of what he took on. They had their capsised back in October last year. They had to recover. And then they had the cheating thing and lost points. Initially they had the slower boat. That allowed Emirates Team New Zealand to get up to matchpoint. They reconfigured the crew with Jimmy Spithill lined up with Ben Ainslie, and the results speak for themselves. This machine is the fastest boat. Absolute euphoria on the boat. It is a bunch of Kiwis, Aussies, A Pom and just the one American. You have to take your hat off to Larry Ellison. He delivered on his promise. But in the end, what he said he would produce, he has. I wonder if San Francisco will embrace him now. Larry Ellison has changed the face of the America's Cup. Possibly forever. Does a lot of good bringing it into San Francisco Bay. I like that. But the lack of good challenges in the quality, I do not think it helped Emirates Team New Zealand in the end. It was a walk in the park for them through the challenger series. We have been up to Shed 80 and see what Oracle have got there. They have got tough racing their in-house racing than Luna Rossa could give the Kiwis. Dean waves back. Gutting for them. I was thinking about this moment, and I was thinking that if Emirates Team New Zealand story was a movie, it would be something like Braveheart. Because it has been an inspirational story of brave people and brave thinking and brave sailing with the heart and courage to take on this much bigger foe. In the battle of the budgets, the much bigger one wins. Larry Ellison takes the plaudits, get squirted with the not-champagne. What do they call it? We allowed to call champagne. It is sparkling wine from Napa Valley. Ainslie being showered with it. The injection of Ben Ainslie made a difference. Let's not forget the role of Russell Coutts. He is the mastermind and set up Oracle Team USA and in the end Russell Coutts is still undefeated in the America's Cup. But as a sailor and now as a manager. You have got Joe Spooner. He has been in theRe as one of the grinders. You're hearing that. 'I've never grinded so hard in my life.' It's been the greatest America's Cup ever. That's the biggest crowd we have ever seen down here. The tradition would be that immediately Oracle came over the line that there has been an exchange of envelopes I am not sure who the challenging yacht club would have been, but that will be reported later. What a race. There's a few spectators out here, as you can see. It was a fantastic race. We would not have had any other way. Come from behind. We almost lost you, Jimmy. It really is about the team. On your own, you are nothing. But when you have a team like this, they make you look great. You are facing the barrel of the gun at 8-1, and these guys don't even flinch. You took a little nosedive there. What happened? There was a lot of pressure on the city side, and really puffy in the middle of the racetrack. We thought we would keep it exciting for you guys. What did Larry Ellison say to you when he got on the boat? He said, 'Hey guys, you just won the America's Cup.' Thank you for giving us one of the most memorable America's Cup with ever seen. This is one hell of a day. They give very much. Very gracious there, Jimmy Spithill. He has had some interesting things to say. I think the microphones are still up on the boat. We can eavesdrop on a conversation with Larry. A good little boat. It started off a bit shaky. I just had an e-mail pop up here from Don Scott in Taupo he said, 'one thing I've learnt in 70 odd years on this planet is never underestimate the USA.' There is the fifth richest man in the world. Good observation, Don Scott. They all heading back towards the Oracle base, which is at Pier 80. It is an absolutely vast complex up there. 2000 feet long. It houses all kinds of stuff. If that shot for Dean Barker. A dream gone. CORRECTION: a sad shot it was a Braveheart story. An inspirational story. And it slipped by again. And it is pretty hard to take. We know who we have been close to the effort that has gone into it. Last night there was an air of inevitability creeping in As this phenomenal roll of Oracle's got underway. In the technology race was slipping out of our fingers. It always has been a technology race. Technology led 162 years ago, and nothing has changed. We're going to have a word with Larry Ellison, the boss of Oracle. He might be getting lined up for that. Happy moments on the Oracle boat. Very sombre moments on Aotearoa. The Larry Ellison and Russell Coutts, they set this one up, they had a vision. Some of it has been applauded, some of it hasn't. I have no doubt that this 34th America's Cup has changed the face of sailing forever. It has. And we now ponder what comes next. We were being asked was a while ago. I would like to think that we did warn against counting chickens. We were very disinclined to engage on what would happen afterwards. You wonder who would want to take part if it is just become a purely technology race. But for now we look at the seams of absolute jubilation from Larry Ellison, Jimmy Spithill and his crew. Oracle Team USA, they have done it. They have made history So, sadly, for team New Zealand, expectation unfulfilled. But they sailed and honest race and they were beaten by technology. Dean sailed a brilliant race today and they did everything that they hoped they would do and we are proud of them and they should be proud. It is nearly 3 weeks since the start of the regatta. Team New Zealand were leading in race nine and it was called off due to the wind. They won the start of another race that was postponed as well. In the early part of the regatta, luck did not go their way. No it didn't. Team New Zealand were the innovators and they set the standard. It was very cruel to have that stolen from them by the wind gods and the weather gods. Hats off to Oracle. They did an amazing comeback. Sir Russell Coutts, Larry Ellison, Jimmy Spithill, congratulations to you. Team New Zealand did an incredibly good job to be in the position where they have a shot at it. Dean Barker gave them the absolute best shot at winning today. They did all they could. The Stars & Stripes a the way from the dock in San Francisco as Oracle celebrates its victory. We are back with Martin Tasker and Peter Lester. We are waiting for the prize-giving ceremony to get underway here on Pier 29. There will be two press conferences afterwards. One for Oracle, the America's Cup holders, and one for Emirates team New Zealand. I think the main emphasis will be on the future visions, and what future indeed for team New Zealand now. They have fallen at the final hurdle once again. An interesting scenario to see how this comes about. You have got to say, a couple of weeks ago, we thought was going to be us. It is pretty gutting to have to sit here and report the reverse. Having seen what has gone on over the last couple of years and while they have led the way... What a time for these guys. Jimmy Spithill. Larry Ellison gets to drive. A picture of the man at the wheel. Would he address a bunch of computer geeks? Not much of a choice today. Especially when you are the boss. One of his loves has been sailing. The impact he made on America's Cup. He has now defended it. With Jimmy Spithill is the skipper, and of course that injection of Ben Ainslie. Where will Ben Ainslie now go? Will be a be a team Great Britain defence? Here's a sailing God in Britain. International countries like Germany, France. I got a request from the BBC World Service to talk about the America's Cup from a journalist in London. He said the interest` he is actually a Kiwi journalist in London. He said the interest, and he has been talking it up for weeks, and now it is as an amazing story. JIMMY SPITHALL: It is hard to put a value on hometown advantage. IF WE EVER NEED a time for the people of San Francisco and America to get behind it, now is the time. We don't want to let these guys take the cup. We are obsessed with keeping it here. We have been in situations worse than this. We have got the confidence that we can come through. DRAMATIC MUSIC oRACLE TEAM USA, THE DEFENDERS OF THE CUP, HAVE THE LEAD. Imagine if these guys lost from here? What an upset that would be. Team New Zealand almost capsize. They almost flip this thing over. They are happy to have the boat back on the water. Would even do this time Jimmy? I am going to win the start. Jimmy Spithill nails the start. Not a bad sign for the Americans at this stage. Team USA grabs it. I told you all along we could win races. It was a very satisfying race. Jimmy Spithill gets the dominant position. Day number nine, race 12 is underway. What a move by Jimmy Spithill. The Americans dial it up perfectly. DRAMATIC MUSIC sadly, a day of high hopes and high expectations, but it is going to Oracle team USA. This is the moment at the Royal New Zealand yacht Squadron when Emirates team New Zealand crossed the line in second place today. The standing ovation from spectators loyal to the end. Gutted at the result. Unfortunately, left empty-handed. What is the wash-up down there Ruth? They gave the token clap to Oracle and the standing ovation to Emirates team New Zealand. Sailing down here is very personal. There are three members that are on the boat today. Here is Penny Whiting. The regatta was about speed. The fastest boat won on the water. It was a great regatta on the water. You are not feeling gutted about not having the silverware? Absolutely gutted. New Zealand would have loved to have had back here. It is a very expensive game And Oracle were able to change the boat with the new technology. It is about speed. Do you want to carry on and is theRe the talent? There is a huge amount of talent. What will stop New Zealand is the money. What will be in store for New Zealand when they come back? They have been so close, so near, yet so far away. Not the result they wanted, but there is still a reason to celebrate when these guys come home. Everyone is telling me they are immensely proud of them. There is Ruth Wynn-Williams at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. Did you know about the automated trimming of the sails? Effectively a fly-by-wire system we everything is automated. It was obviously not working very well in the first week though? They weren't 100% clear on the legality of it, but they have it and they refined it and they came back from the death. They had a quiver full of arrows and eventually they found the right one. Here we are in race 19 when Oracle has that massive overtake and they sailed away with the America's Cup up wind. It seems to be the key factor in the way that they performed. We have not seen a pure yacht race when neither team had any mistakes. Team New Zealand won the start. They won The start. 10 out of 10. Round the bottom Mark, there was only a few seconds on it. They did not make mistakes. Oracle was the quicker boat. Other days, the conditions have been different, today was pure speed. We are going to be on air for a good time yet. Will this be the end of team New Zealand? Will they be able to continue? This is absolutely not the end of team New Zealand. They came right to the edge. 9-8 is the narrowest of losses. They had a great campaign. They had honesty and integrity. The youth America's Cup three weeks ago, the New Zealand crews came first and second. Team New Zealand is a great brand and they are here to stay. Like Penny Whiting said, we produce the best sailors per capita in the world. Oracle technology ` a lot of it came from here. Close. Not quite. Live captioning of the America's Cup will now cease.
