LET'S GO NOW TO SHED 10 ON THE AUCKLAND WATERFRONT WHERE THE TEAM NZ SAILORS ARE ABOUT TO ARRIVE FOR A WELCOME HOME. TONI STREET'S THERE WITH MARTIN TASKER. Fantastic timing. We're sitting here with bated breath. Team NZ are about to enter Shed 10. There is a lot of feeling in herE today. We lived in a bubble in San Francisco, and were hearing about scenes like this. Team NZ will be blown away. They know they gave everything they possibly could but to be rewarded with something like this is very special. The community just wants to be here to let them know they did all right even though they did not win the cup. A powhiri is just starting here. Team NZ are making their way now to the front of Shed 10. Let us listen to it now. WOMAN CALLS KARANGA CROWD CHEERS WOMEN CONTINUE CALLING CROWD CONTINUES CHEERING 1 1 1 1 1 1 we are here at Shed 10. You can see all these wonderful smiles from Team NZ. We are on Auckland's Queens Wharf. We have a bit program here today. Dave Dobbyn will be performing. As will The Feelers at the end of this coverage. The crowd wants a piece of them. Everyone wants a glimpse of the heroes. It is cool that they are walking right down the middle of this. They look quite dazed. I can understand why. The National anthem had already begun before the team came in. It is incredible to see. We can barely hear ourselves think. Everyone has their phones up to get a recording of history. Those familiar white sunglasses perched on his head. Ray Davies. People are standing on chairs. It is just amazing. I understand people were here when we were on Breakfast this morning. That's how really they came to camp out. It was a human tidal wave coming in to nab the best spots. The change and the realisation and the maturity where people can look at something and know that they did all they could. I think being here today in seeing this crowd, this is actually the right decision even though there were some critics. We are going to take a break here. 1 Welcome back to Shed 10 here on Auckland's Queens Wharf. Martin, one thing that everyone sympathised with was Dean Barker. When Team NZ loss that final race, he was devastated. We had so many viewers tweet in asking for us to give him a hug. You can see Rob Waddell's head sticking up over everyone else's. Dean was mobbed like some sort of superstar. Rob Waddell at the back waving out of the crowd. They have smiles all over their faces, just so humbled. They were a little worried. Dean Barker said he felt like he let NZ down. We both interviewed him the morning after, and he was so gracious. He volunteered to come down and talk to Toni on breakfast and then do the six o'clock news as well. We had no idea that it was the sort of scale what was happening back here. There is a sense of pride and an understanding of what happened. This is unprecedented. I knew there would be a big crowd here and they would be vocal, but not as vocal. The clapping and cheering has not stopped. Peter Lester, your fellow commentator in San Francisco, will be the MC. Team NZ not only want to thank the crowd but they want to thank NZ for the support that they have had. Over there, we were overwhelmed all the time. Go back to July 4, the opening day of the America's Cup, in the support for NZ was absolutely overwhelming and far greater than the support for Oracle Team USA. Even on Independence Day. ALL SING 'GOD DEFEND NZ' # GOD OF NATIONS AT THY FEET # IN THE BONDS OF LOVE WE MEET # HEAR OUR VOICES # WE ENTREAT # GOD, DEFEND OUR FREE LAND # GUARD PACIFIC'S TRIPLE STAR # FROM THE SHAFTS OF STRIFE AND WAR # MAKE HER PRAISES HEARD AFAR # GOD, DEFEND NZ ALL CHEER (SPEAKS MAORI) we thank you for the special day. We ask you to bless it all of us who are here today and their families. We ask all these things in your name. Amene. (SPEAKS MAORI) (CONTINUES SPEAKING MAORI) on behalf of Ngati Whatua, we express our feelings about our family coming home. They have shown that Nzers can compete at the best. And I am proud to be here today to be part of this assembly, to be part of the welcome. I was also proud to stand when we launched the waka out here. We said a few prayers to bring our team home safe. (SPEAKS MAORI) Ladies and gentlemen, aroha mai to you all. ALL SING WAIATA there was a proverb. One day there will be a wind of change, and (SPEAKS MAORI) (CONTINUES SPEAKING MAORI) 1 1 1 1 1 ALL APPLAUD ALL APPLAUD we're just seeing her down at Shed 10 the dignitaries up on stage as the top players of Team NZ are introduced here. Grant Dalton, Dean Barker, Ray Davies. The senior members of the sailing team. Here is Dave Dobbyn. He is getting ready to sing 'Welcome Home'. # TONIGHT I AM FEELING FOR YOU # UNDER THE STATE OF A STRANGE LAND. # YOU HAVE SACRIFICED MUCH TO BE HERE. # THERE BUT FOR GRACE AS I OFFER MY HAND. # SO WELCOME HOME # I BID YOU WELCOME. # I BID YOU WELCOME # WELCOME HOME # FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART. # OUT HERE ON THE EDGE # THE EMPIRE IS FADING BY THE DAY. # AND THE WORLD IS SO WEARY AND WORN # MAYBE WE'LL FIND THAT NEW WAY. # SO WELCOME HOME # YOU SEE I MADE A SPACE FOR YOU NOW # WELCOME HOME # FROM THE BOTTTOM OF OUR HEARTS. # WELCOME HOME # FROM THE BOTTOM OF OUR HEARTS ...their courage out on the water of San Francisco Bay. It's been a hell of an emotional journey for them and us. But it has made us richer as a sporting country. We are proud to be here and show our support for Emirates Team New Zealand. And to thank them for what they did in San Francisco in the Louis Vuitton cup and the America's Cup. For me, it's welcome home. I have been astonished at the support and welcome I have had since coming home to New Zealand. To see the welcome the team has had is astonishing. Today we will hear from a few key speakers. Auckland Mayor Len Brown. Steven Joyce. And of course Grant Dalton and Dean Barker. We will also share footage from the highlights of the 2013 challenge for the America's Cup and the huge reaction here from the fans. To kick off we will show a short video from San Francisco, Kia Kaha. It portrays New Zealand and how we came from a nation born of sailors to the best sailors in the world. We will see the flying machine Aotearoa that represented us superbly in San Francisco last week. The video was used in San Francisco to open the hosting events in the waka at the base. Let's have a look at the video. Sailing north on our own waka we come to Tamaki Makaurau. From Hawaiki to Aotearoa. The waka have shaped our landscape, our people and our traditions. (DRAMATIC MUSIC) (MUSIC CONTINUES) (AUDIENCE APPLAUDS) good afternoon everyone welcome to you all. Don't we love this place? I see some of my great mates down here. You are awesome. I want to acknowledge and welcome home in behalf of you all Emirates team New Zealand. You are the business! Coming in behind them and with them and supporting them during their time in San Francisco, all of theIr families sitting over there. Put your hands together for their families. I want to acknowledge the minister, Steven Joyce, on behalf of us all. And to Emirates and the team of five outstanding sponsors, let's put our hands together for all the sponsors. To Dean and Grant, the boys, we want to acknowledge you. We wanted to bring you back in the right way, to the heart of the team base. Every morning we were here, riding with you. God! In the heart of a seafaring nation, we were with you on every tack and every jibe. We were leaning with you. We have all become experts on Foiling. And we all hated that minute when they cancelled that race too early. And when this place is full, it goes off. The noise is deafening. Let's give it up once more for team New Zealand! So great to have you back. You united us. You united us Kiwis. You represented us superbly. Skill, honour and integrity. I'm so proud on behalf of our Auckland Council and all the Kiwis out there to welcome new home. We are so proud of you. Welcome home, boys. (ALL CHANT 'TEAM NZ') for about a week New Zealanders found it more and more difficult to give the boss a reason for arriving late at work. You joined together and cheered for the team. Celebrating their achievements and feeling the raw defeat with them. This video encapsulates the emotion we felt. Team New Zealand was not alone on the water. This video is a tribute to team New Zealand and the fans and their supporters. (EMOTIVE MUSIC) (MUSIC CONTINUES) (MUSIC SOFTENS, SWELLS) (ALL CHEER, WHISTLE) (MUSIC CONTINUES) (EMOTIVE PIANO MUSIC) Your worship, the mayor, girls and boys, and of course the members of team New Zealand. What a fantastic welcome home for the team. These guys deserve this. I told you guys it was getting big back home. I had the honour of witnessing first-hand the talent, the perseverance, the relentless hard work and the highs and the lows of Emirates team New Zealand in San Francisco. This team, on and off the water, threw everything they had into this event. I want to say to Grant, Dean, the rest of the crew, that while you didn't achieve everything you set out to, you won the hearts of this nation. And not just our nation. You won the hearts of the USA and everyone else who watched this contest. Your performance on the water was phenomenal, but so too was the passionate way you represented your country on land. We all admired your tenacity, your commitment and your integrity. In Auckland and across the country, Kiwis were on the edge of their seats, willing you on with every Tack and jibe,. The manner in which you accepted the final outcome has made us admire you even more. You have been a tremendous advertisement for New Zealand's innovation, it's teamwork, its design, and it's never say die attitude. I have a special message for you all. I wonder what that is. This country and this government stands ready to be part of the next America's Cup challenge. (WILD CHEERING) as I have said to Grant and to Dean, you've got a bit of work to do. Bring us a proposal and we will work with you on it. A lot of people have been pondering, including some members of the team, how this America's Cup has caught the imagination of New Zealand. Yes, it has been the spectacle, the contest and the competition. That time you set the yacht up on a 45degree angle, added another million viewers. But I think it's also because it's a reminder that, yes, we are a maritime nation. 4 million of us live on the single waka at the bottom of a vast ocean. When our boys go out there and take on the world's best and the world's wealthiest, and very nearly pull off what would have been a massive upset you make us all incredibly proud. Kia ora, Team New Zealand, welcome home. Thank you, Steven. No pressure (!) Next, we have a video put together by Toyota. INQUISITIVE MUSIC INQUISITIVE MUSIC CONTINUES MUSIC SLOWS MUSIC QUICKENS When inspiration strikes, talk to an ANZ home-loan specialist. We have more local experts in more places to help bring your thinking to life. seeing team New Zealand win in San Diego inspired a lot more sailors. Let's hope we see more Kiwi yachtIes get up there and do the business in years to come. The people we really want to hear from, come and join us. Thanks, Pete. Mr Joyce, Mayor Brown, Ngati Whatua, thank you for such an amazing welcome. Hello. Bugger. I want to say today, more than any time before, honestly say I am the proudest I have ever been to be a New Zealander. I know I speak for the rest of the team as well. We went to San Francisco to win the America's Cup and we didn't do that. The messages of support, the humbling words that we have received, we can never thank you guys enough for that support. It definitely gives you the strength to go on. I'd like to... We're going to go backwards and forwards. Dean and I spoke last night. We wondered how we would do this. I want to thank our amazing sponsors. Emirates Team New Zealand, Toyota, 20 years Toyota has been involved with Team New Zealand. Amazing. Omega have been with us for 20 years as well. This team holds people. Camper shoes. Nespresso. Sky Vodka. Part of Campari, great sponsors. The clothing supplier. Personal people have been fantastic. Sir Stephen Tindall is here today. Particularly the New Zealand government. The thing is, they are good blokes. They are really nice people. They are really good people. We are indebted for the support they have given us. To the city, Len Brown has been amazing to us. Let's hope we don't get thrown out of our base! I also want to, from my side, acknowledge the support from the families. While we were in San Francisco, and for the team, the support we had from all the families was phenomenal. And finally, for me, when we were up there, we knew there was a lot of goodwill, support for the team. We didn't really understand what was going on back here. But it's remarkable how many people have been touched or involved now in our sport. It makes us proud to feel that you have followed what we have been doing. Your support has been phenomenal. We hope that there is another strong team New Zealand into the next America's Cup we will do everything we can to make sure it has a chance to be here. Thank you for supporting the team. I guess that's it. (MEN PERFORM HAKA) thanks, Dean and Grant. Dean is one of the good guys about sport. Grant, it's great to see you got your spark back. This is the last time we get a chance to show our support and welcome home to Emirates Team New Zealand and the families. Let them hear it for the last time. Give it up for Emirates Team New Zealand. Well, Martin, this crowd speaks for itself. Hanging ofF every word Dean Barker and Grant Dalton said. I'm left wondering what would happen if they had won it. The idea that team New Zealand carries on, the reaction here is... MAN: Now, tell me what you see in this image. MAN: Now, tell me what you see in this image. WOMAN: Um,... my new shoes? OK. And this? My... tickets to Fiji. Right, OK. This? This? My phone bill. This? My phone bill. Hmm. ALL CHEER coming to you live from Shed 10 as the country celebrates the achievements of Team NZ in San Francisco. We have heard the news that the government will be supporting the next bid for the America's Cup. There will be the naysayers about it. But the fact of the matter is it is a no-brainer. We know the economic impact. When it comes to having the government backing, it gives the team and people like Grant Dalton who are trying to raise sponsors incredible credibility. The sponsors look at the fact that there is a government behind them and decide they will get behind them. But will Grant Dalton be around to see the next campaign? We hope the world. Dean Barker hope so too. He said that if it is continue, we need to re-energise Grant Dalton. The money he raises. Since 2003, I don't know how much. We're here lie that Shed 10. We have plenty more to come, Martin Tasker and Toni Street here. As the country pays tribute to Team NZ. An event that brought the country together. We watch the sailors hop on to the boat for a little sail past. We have seen one of the most extraordinary things in here. The idea that the team can go away, not win and come back to this. Team NZ were the first to foil. Oracle copied them the entire way, with more funds and more resources. This adventure was about NZ innovation and Kiwi sailing. It has been an amazing showcase, and we saw that over there. It is amazing to see the reaction. Often when teams lose on the world stage, fans want blood. There is a sense that,'you did everything you could. There was no stone left unturned in this campaign.' It was unfortunate to not have the money in the end, but is exciting to know that there is a new campaign. They had the perfect start. In the end, they were beaten by the faster boat. But they put everything on the line. That instills pride. They were excelling on a stage against enormous odds. Why shouldn't we celebrate that? We're inside Shed 10, which was a place for many Nzers to come every morning during the breakfast coverage to watch the heroes compete. We really did live in a bit of a bubble in San Francisco. L We did not know the extent to which the country was getting behind them. Let's have a look now back on the 34th America's Cup.
