Coming up on Te Karere... Stick to kapa haka. That's the advice from Shane Jones to Ngati Rangiwewehi who are calling on Labour MP Clare Curran to step down. What's now on the horizon for the Kohanga Reo Trust board? Te Matatini 2015 organisers are calling for volunteers. Due to the live nature of Te Karere, some segments will not be subtitled. Tena koutou katoa, and welcome to Te Karere. Stick to kapa haka. That's the advice from Shane Jones to Ngati Rangiwewehi who are calling on Labour MP Clare Curran to step down. Ngati Rangiwewehi are accusing Curran of using parliamentary privilege to make defamatory allegations about Maori Television chief executive candidate Paora Maxwell. And Jones' latest rebuff has added salt to the wound. We're unable to provide subtitles. The Government will be meeting with the Kohanga Reo board members to go through allegations of misappropriation of funds against them and their subsidiary group, Te Pataka Ohanga. Dr Michael Cullen was commissioned to write a Kohanga Reo report on the workings of the board. Kereama Wright has the latest. Kereama. We're unable to provide subtitles. Allegations of misappropriating Kohanga Reo funds are sitting uncomfortably with both sides of the house. Those in high level positions - perhaps it's time for them to go. National has yet to agree, but Hekia Parata has called the board and Pita Sharples to an urgent meeting tonight. Dame Iritana Tawhiwhirangi and her daughter-in-law Lynda Tawhiwhirangi, the former general manager of Te Pataka Ohanga, are under fire. They face allegations of spending $129,000 on personal purchases and koha. Labour has come out saying the Government have been dragging their feet in addressing this issue. And the independent report on the Kohanga Reo's treaty claim that was received from Dr Michael Cullen in past months. Wait and see after tonight's meeting. We might talk about that. It's broken. If their finances don't add up then their treaty claim is dead. Jones puts the blame on Pita Sharples. He thinks Sharples and the Dame should be let go. Iritana needs to go, her and the minister, Pita Sharples. We're unable to provide subtitles. Thank you for your report, Kereama Wright, live from Wellington. We're staying in Wellington but crossing to our studio where Te Ururoa Flavell joins us live. Tena koe, Te Ururoa. Ngati Rangiwewehi calling for Clare Curran to resign for using the protection of parliamentary privilege while making derogatory remarks about the integrity of Paora Maxwell. Your thoughts? We're unable to provide subtitles. Te Ururoa Flavell, thank you for joining us. After the break, there's more from the kohanga saga to be revealed. Te Matatini 2015 organisers are calling for volunteers. Welcome back. Despite the major problems facing the executive board of Te Kohanga Reo, support for the trust remains strong amongst the majority of kohanga reo in Auckland. Let's crossover now to reporter Oriini Tipene-Leach who spoke with some of the families from those kohanga reo. What's the feeling at the grassroots level? I contacted around 26 Auckland-based kohanga reo to canvas the issues facing the board, but all of them declined to talk. The Trust's Auckland branch sent an email out to all kohanga within its region, which I have a copy of, restricting them from speaking to all media. But some kohanga staff I spoke with did say to me that there are some very upset whanau demanding answers, Scotty. But what do the staff say - how are they feeling? The board only has itself to blame, that's the main gist of what the majority of staff and managers of Kohanga Reo are saying. But, Kohanga Reo are still OK operationally, however, one expressed feelings of angst against the rules put in place by the board as the board doesn't follow its own rules. Has the Kohanga Trust received accreditation to deliver its Te Takaimatua programme? No. Right now the trust is working on modifying the qualification they put forward in their application to NZQA Until the qualification is approved NZQA are unable to approve the programme. So where does this leave the Kohanga Reo's Waitangi Tribunal claim? The board are awaiting a response from the Education Minister. They're supposed to be meeting with her and the Minister of Maori Affairs before the end of the week to discuss the WAI 2336 claim as well as all the other issues surrounding the Kohanga Reo National Trust Board at the moment, Scotty. Thank you for your report, Oriini Tipene-Leach. Still on the topic of Kohanga Reo and its current issues, Prof Ranginui Walker says there needs to be new faces elected in the trust to run and assist kohanga reo around the country. Ngapuhi's claim was before the tribunal, but there is another claim taking the attention. I don't know where that idea comes from that by becoming a board member you're there for life. In his view, it is not appropriate for members to stay on the board forever. A term on the board should not exceed six years. There should be a renewal of the board to allow for flesh blood to come in with new ideas that will allow for expansion. He also says that he would never mix his personal credit card with that of the board's. The Tribunal heard the claims of the Kohanga Reo Trust, whose issue then was that management which is under Maori control, would have to relinquish control to the Ministry of Education, that was then, this issue now is a whole new subject. Walker also said that there was once a time when it was mostly the elders who looked after the children. The Ministry want all Kohanga Reo teachers to have tertiary qualifications from University, but we all know that it was the nannies and aunties that nurtured the children in the Maori language, but by Pakeha standards, only people with degrees can carry out those roles. Over the years, Kohanga Reo enrolment numbers have been in decline. Some have removed themselves from the Trust to be able to keep the ball rolling, and that's generally how Maori work anyway, and I pray that that continues. And so the Kohanga Reo National Trust continues its journey. As for Ngapuhi, they continue on their own journey for the good of their people. Peata Melbourne, Te Karere. A hotspring at Whakarewarewa has been dormant for 30 years. However over the last few weeks it has become active again. An explanation given by some is that it is a sign of the vitality of all the hotsprings of that area. Hinerangi Goodman spoke to some of Tuhourangi-Ngati Wahiao. Awaking after sitting dormant for many years since 1979, the rebirth of this geyser has excited these descendants of Tuhourangi-Ngati Wahiao, Te Arawa. Historically, the geyser was named Papakura by world famous guide at the time - Maggie Thom. A volcanologist from GNS science say the geyser's re-invigoration is a significant development for the regions geothermal fields from Maketu to Tongariro. Globally renowned for its hotsprings, it defintiely doesn't get bigger than this. Hinerangi Goodman, Te Karere. Te Matatini 2015 organisers are calling for volunteers. They are looking for a range of people from kapa haka liaison officers to communications staff. Christchurch will be hosting the 2015 festival from March 4-8. 30,000 spectators are expected. The competition was moved because it clashed with the Cricket World Cup. Volunteers should register with the Waitaha Cultural Trust. After the break we have the weather. To the weather now. For weather, see tvnz.co.nz. That's all we have for today. Kia ora tatou katoa. Captions were made possible with funding from NZ on Air.
