Due to the live nature of Te Karere, some segments will not be subtitled. Tena koutou katoa, and welcome to Te Karere. We'll take a look at kohanga reo in Mataatua First, let's take a look at kohanga reo in Mataatua to see how they have taken the news about the Kohanga Reo Trust. Some say the issues began when Mataatua began to kick up to kick up a fuss about the dismissal of former trust chair, Titoki Black. Here's Hinerangi Goodman. Each day is a fun day for these littlies who are future leaders of tomorrow, however because of the negativities unfolding all around them, the thought is what would the outcome be. It hurts especially when they seem to set the standards from above, and yet contradict it all when it comes to spending the money carelessly, yes it really hurts. The question is why did things go so wrong as the expectations were that only good things would emerge out of the programmes set for advancing the educational standards for the benefit of the whanau, not so that it would turn around and bite those who set them. They set the standards for Pae Rangatira, Te Ara Hiko and Te Takaimatua, to teach families how to budget their money and to follow the correct processes, to maintain good practices. I do salute the board because they set those standards in place, that's why it hurts so much with all that's going on. So what is happening with the left hand? While all the furore is happening elsewhere, here in Te Teko it's another world as these mokopuna sit, eat, play, grow together and learn the Maori language. That is the beauty of children - they have no prejudices whatsoever. They just want to play and have fun. No matter what the outcome is, work here will continue. The rest, only time will tell. Hinerangi Goodman, Te Karere. The spotlight on credit card spending at the Kohanga Reo Trust has thrown its Treaty claim into disarray. Remember, last year the Waitangi Tribunal agreed to an urgent hearing and found the Crown was breaching the Treaty by imposing policies that are causing a decline in kohanga numbers and te reo. Now Te Karere has learned a high level report has backed the tribunal's findings, but does it count for anything? Reporter Tina Wickliffe joins us from Wellington. Tina, tell us more about this report, what's in it, who has it? This is the independent report prepared by Dr Michael Cullen under instruction by the Waitangi Tribunal. That report has been with Hekia Parata for some time now, but she is remaining tight-lipped on its contents. But Te Karere understands Dr Cullen instructs the Crown that the kohanga reo should have its own legislation, that it should have a funding framework specifically designed for kohanga, and that qualifications should be suited to kohanga. So Cullen is effectively supporting the findings of the Waitangi Tribunal, but these swirling financial mismanagement allegations allow Hekia Parata to effectively ignore the recommendations. So it's looking like a victory for the Crown and the lawyers. The details about credit card spending had to have come from someone within the trust, what have you learnt about that? That's what the Kohanga Reo Trust are alleging, that a former employee leaked the credit card details of Lynda Tawhiwhirangi and Iritana Tawhiwhirangi to the media. So tonight they're expected to lay a complaint with police to investigate whether documents were stolen by this former employee, Scotty. Tina Wickliffe, thank you for your report. Kereama Wright has this story. We're unable to provide subtitles. Kereama Wright, Te Karere. Should Len Brown step down or continue to serve as mayor for the NZ's largest city? That's the question that's currently being asked after revelations yesterday that Brown had a two year affair with a member of one of the council's advisory panels. Len Brown is a different man today, in the words of one widely well known commentator, The Mayor of Auckland City has been brought to shame because of his secret relationship with Bevan Chuang who is a member of an advisory panel of the Auckland City Council. Several personal messages were leaked by Chuang about her and Brown's two-year relationship. Now it has all come back to bite them both.
