Tonight on 20/20 ` ever wondered what your pet was thinking? He's a charmer, if he's not a psychic. Well, we put a man who says he knows to the test. I'm a believer. Then who's your daddy? A fertility clinic worker swapping out the father's sperm for his own. I remember handing him the sperm specimen, and he gave me this evil smile. And a schoolyard romance with a twist. The teacher's message, 'You know I love you. 'I don't know what we're going to do, but we're going to be happy together.' Kia ora, I'm Sonya Wilson. When a woman wrote to us saying that her dog had had a reading with a psychic medium, and that the reading had been accurate, we decided to put this man to the test. We sent out a mass email asking for people ` believers and sceptics ` who would be interested in having him read for their pets. The response was almost immediate. Clearly, a lot of you found the idea intriguing. And after much deliberation, we chose, as you do, three dogs, a cat and a horse. The readings were scheduled for one hour, and the psychic medium was not given any personal information about the owners or their pets beforehand. So, here's Emma Keeling with Jay Dobson. YLVIS' 'WHAT DOES THE FOX SAY?' Ever wondered what your pet is thinking? And even I think this is weird. What their future might hold? Before I started doing this, I used to tell people that psychics and mediums were a crock. I don't know anybody else that would want to admit that they can do it. This man says he can talk to animals. I've been given this gift for a certain reason, and I'm going to use it. I've come to pick up Jay Dobson. He's a psychic who also does readings for animals. We've brought him to Auckland to put him to the test, because, well, it does seem pretty unbelievable. Welcome to Auckland. Welcome to Auckland. How are you? Welcome to Auckland. How are you? Good, good. So, how're you feeling about this? I was talking to my cat this morning about it. I was talking to my cat this morning about it. CELL PHONE RINGS Sorry. And, um, he was actually getting smart and saying that, 'They won't say shit when you get there.' You were talking to your cat about this? This is a great start to this story. Jay calls himself a psychic medium. Psychic is being able to tell the future. Mediumship is contacting your nana, granddad, uncle, auntie, whatever the case may be, to have a chat to them. For 23 years he's read for humans, and last year he started tapping in to animals. Animals tell the truth. I actually like animals a lot better, because, well, apart from maybe my cat, they don't backchat you. We can't ask the animals if you're right, so how do we know that you're not pulling the wool over our eyes? OK, honest answer is you don't. But then, the only way that I would believe that you would know is that if I brought up something about the animal that no one else knew or the owner knew. So that's how we decide to test Jay. FUNKY MUSIC We choose five owners and their animals. We know nothing about them before they contact us, and basically, all we tell Jay is he has five readings to do. How do you receive these messages? I receive them in pictures, in voice. Uh, most of the time it's an idea in my head. Can you tell me about the first time you realised you had psychic abilities? The major first time would've been when I was 16, and I was cleaning out my room. When I walked out, I got a flash of a man sitting in a seat in the lounge. I went and I said to Mum, I said, 'I think I saw granddad sitting on the seat,' and, of course, my granddad had only just passed. Jay's not worried about being proven wrong, even though many psychics and mediums have been accused of being fakes. We all do want everybody to see that we are not who we are made out to be on TV. There's a lot of crooks out there. There's a lot of crooks out there. You're not one of them? There's a lot of crooks out there. You're not one of them? Nah. Well, considering how I'm not wealthy, no, I'd like to think I'm not. Um, you know, I even` I even feel guilty charging people for readings. But like I've said before, I've got to eat; I've gotta pay bills. So something's got to be done. But when I can trade, I'll trade. Our test tonight begins with Mac. He is a Border collie-lab. He's a very lazy dog, but he's got that` that kind of collie cuddliness. Brook and Ralph tell us some of the things that Jay might pick up. He was hit by a car once. I was walking him up the driveway from work, and he saw a car` a dog on the other side of the road and bolted. Come on. Oh! Plus Brook's been to a medium before and they said that Mac was... < ...a human soul in an animal's body. And a husband of mine in a past life. To which Ralph said when I got home, 'No wonder he never listens to you.' (LAUGHS) And that he'd been brought into this life to show me how to love. Not physical love, but spiritual love. Would you say you're believers, sceptics, somewhere in between? Would you say you're believers, sceptics, somewhere in between? I'm a believer. I'm definitely a sceptic. But they can agree on why they want to do this. I just think it's a cool opportunity to potentially see into your animal's mind, because how many times do you wish that they could talk? We told Jay he was meeting a dog and their male owner. Jay has asked that the owners just give him 'yes' or 'no' answers. How are ya? How are ya? Jay. Not too bad. How are ya? Jay. Not too bad. Nice to see you. I just thought when I when he was walking down, I just got old, old, old, as in an old soul. Jay does know that Mac belongs to a couple. He's attached to a female presence quite strongly. Now, I wanna say that this person's alive. Does that make sense to you? Yep. Yep. Would that be your partner? Yep. Would that be your partner? Yep. Yep. Does she take him for more walks than you? No. No. And would she do all the spoiling? No. And would she do all the spoiling? No. Ralph decides to help Jay out and tells him about Brook's previous reading. You got anything to say to Brook if` if they have been together in a past life or...? To be honest with you, I don't pick that up. To be honest with you, I don't pick that up. No. I pick up that they are spiritually linked. Yeah. Yeah. What I've been told is that that is pretty far fetched. Yep. Yep. And, um` but I'm talking to dogs, for Christ's sake. I mean, you know? (LAUGHS) Brook couldn't be here today because she's just had a baby. Something, you know, fairly substantial's changed in his life lately. I don't know if he can tell you what that was. I don't know if he can tell you what that was. I can't pick up how` what it was, but I can pick up that he does get a little bit stressed, and then it goes away, and then it'll come back again. When I go back towards the back leg and everything like that, he's just giving me a feeling of pain. Did he get actually get hit by a car or something like that? Did he get actually get hit by a car or something like that? Yep. Yep. Oh, OK. Come here you. It was quite painful. It was quite painful. It was a pretty heavy hit. It was quite painful. It was a pretty heavy hit. Yeah. Yeah. But, like, to me, what` what I see is` I see a` the old pulsating red. Pulsating like you see on TV. That's all I got for you. That's all I got for you. Nothing else to say, wolf? You done? He was good. He was short, sweet and straight to the point. Wasn't a lot of words, but they were main words. So Jay's happy, but is Ralph? So did you get anything out of that? Um... Not` Not a huge amount. I mean, some of the things he said were pretty interesting, especially with the car incident and the being spiritually linked to Brook. Apart from that, it was,... I guess, kind of vague. QUIRKY MUSIC For three days we crisscross Auckland. We give Jay five opportunities, with different species, to prove his skills. Although Jay gets little from Pat the cat. I didn't expect much from the cat, because of the fact that cats just don't say much. I've never come cross a cat ` apart from mine ` that does talk, but then I spend a lot of time with mine so it` that will be why. Is that true or a convenient excuse? Is Jay preying on caring pet owners? No medium preys on anybody. You have your own free will to decide whether you want to ring and get a reading, were it be animal, were it be for yourself or whatever the case may be. Each reading takes less than an hour. Apparently, Sparky the horse is very talkative. He used to be quite good at dressage. Now he doesn't like it any more. I'm gonna to put my life on and say that he's had enough of it, sick and tired of it, to be honest with you. I don't like the feeling of that leg. But he actually loves jumping. Like, he just` his whole expression changes. I can understand that, but I psychically don't feel it being healthy for him, because of that. Time to think improves Robyn's opinion of the reading. Initially sort of when he said a few things I was kind of, 'I'm not quite sure what he's meaning there.' But after I'd thought about it a bit, then I sort of did connect what he was talking about. Yeah. So I think the majority of it he got right. Coming up ` the test continues and things start getting really weird. There's a very strange feeling in my... here, right now. Really? Really? Very strange. # Do it from your chair, ma'am. # They are everywhere. Welcome to Auckland. How are you? Welcome to Auckland. How are you? Good, good. 20/20 is searching for answers. What animals have you done psychic readings with? I've done horses, dogs, cats, uh, guinea pigs. We're testing psychic medium Jay Dobson's claims he can connect with animals. I'd like to believe, but there's just not enough hard, kind of 'in your face' evidence to make you go, 'Yeah.' So how did all this start? Well, Jay was giving a reading and accidentally connected to his client's dog. I said to the lady, you know, 'Are you happy with the reading?' And she said, 'No.' And I said, 'Why not?' And she said, 'Because that's not me at all.' She text and said that, 'My dog was looking at you the whole time that you were doing the reading. 'What you said is exactly what's wrong with my dog.' # One, two, three. ELECTRO SWING MUSIC But can Jay convince our pet owners that he's the real deal? # That's right. This is Sarah and LB, aka Little Beagle. When I adopted her, her name was Fleur. I didn't like the thought of yelling 'Fleur' at the park, cos it sounded like a tampon. BOTH LAUGH Sarah is a believer. She's great with cats. If anything, she is a little bit fearful of them. When there's food around, you can't get through to her. # Bad boy. I need to dance. If you don't dance, no romance. # Yeah, yeah, we lost weight didn't we? Cos we was a fat beagle, yeah! If she says in the psychic reading that mummy keeps calling me fat,... (LAUGHS) I'm going to lose it. If she if she says, 'Mummy, take a long hard look in the mirror.' CURIOUS MUSIC She's just said to me, 'Just cos you want to stay thin and be fit, it doesn't mean that I have to.' There you go. That's better, isn't it, eh? What else you got to say? Jay tells us LB wants to be fed more biscuits. Her exact words to me, 'It's better than the shit you're feeding me now.' OK, so is that a dietary supplement or something like that? I'd have to say... way off on that one. She loves what I feed her now. way off on that one. She loves what I feed her now. Oh, no, no, no, definitely. It's been another mixed bag. That was a hard one. The dog, I mean` the dog was a bit nervous and a bit shy. It only gave me one-word answers. It was only saying 'biscuits'. It was only saying 'food'. So I had to put together what I believed that the dog was saying. How can you put anything together when you only get one word? You can't, to be honest, OK. And this is where it comes into the bit of mediumship that I don't like. If you're only getting one word, you` it can be a thousand different things and you need to ask questions. And that, to me, is` is not mediumship. That is what a fake would do, and that is not what I want to do, but bearing in mind the fact that I have only been doing this for about six or seven months full on, I'm learning. I think it was a little bit airy-fairy for me. Maybe being a believer, I wanted hard facts, you know, and which I know is very hard to get. What I didn't factor in is that that she was shy. She might not have anything to say. (LAUGHS) But now aren't you interpreting? You so wanted to talk to her. Yeah, I so wanted to hear her say something, but on the other flip side, for her to not mention the cats at all, to me, was, like, 'Well, come on.' It's not like there's one. And it was sort of like the things that I think she loves, he said that she wasn't that keen on, so I was sort of a bit, like, 'Huh.' How many psychics are out there doing readings for animals? I have quite a few psychic medium friends on Facebook. I've hit them all up about it. Out of the 300 or 400 that I've got, I've only had two come back admit that they can do it, but they won't do it, because of the fact that they are scared that they will get ridiculed about it and made fun of. We're coming to the end of our test. This is Lou and Keith. The one with the tail is Pai, and she's rather unique. A guy at the park when she first came out of quarantine came up to me and said, 'Is that a ginga husky? (LAUGHS) > (LAUGHS) > And I just about cried and wet my pants at the same time because that is kind of exactly what she looks like, really. (COMMANDS IN JAPANESE) So where did the name Pai come from? It's actually funny. She` We` She had two owners before us, and so we rescued her in Japan, and she was actually named by her first family after the girl from Whale Rider, so Paikea. So apparently it means 'good'. So apparently it means 'good'. How much do you know about her background? I guess a little, eh, honey? She was apparently mistreated as a puppy by a Japanese family, and she was very very skittish when we first got her. You could barely pat her. As we drive to Pai's reading, I'm unsure if Jay has proven he can communicate with animals. But when we arrive at Lou and Keith's house, something very strange happens. Uh, I'm just looking at your face Lou. You're a little bit surprised. I am quite surprised that Pai's assumed that position with a rel` like, an absolute stranger, and she's letting him do that, because that's very uncommon. It takes awhile. It takes awhile. Very uncommon. I don't believe that the original people knew how to look after her properly, OK, and it, um` then it just got to the point where they just didn't care, OK, and, um` and they passed her on. But, um, she feels safe here, cos, like, this house is safe. She is saying to me that, um,... she did get hit around here a lot, whether it's` Is that right? Oh, OK, yeah, around that side there. And, um, like, just I suppose a smack on the side or a kick or something like that. I'm gonna slightly` slightly blurt that when we got her, we were told never to touch her hindquarters, which now is completely the opposite. Remember, we've told him nothing about Pai or her owners. But Jay doesn't get everything right. But for some unknown reason I've got the word` the,um` the word Dutch in it, so I don't know does that make sense to you guys? We know some Dutch people. We know some Dutch people. (LAUGHS) I do keep looking at the paws. Definitely I want to start with that one, and` and possibly this one here. I'm not` It's a bit confused. But definitely that one there. I'm not` It's a bit confused. But definitely that one there. Left paw. Did it get squashed or something or was it...? Don't know. Don't know. Uh, it's always been extremely sensitive. Soon after, Jay tells us his spirit guide is sending healing help to Pai. It doesn't mean it's gonna heal completely, but it will sort of make the dog not have to hide it so much. Give her the confidence to do that. Give her the confidence to do that. There's a very strange feeling in my... here, right now. Really? Really? Very strange. So cute. It's been the most surprising reading so far. How was that? How was that? It was` It was a little bit emotional, I have to say. I didn't know whether or not he was gonna pick up on` on some of the sort of, I guess, abuse that Pai had when she was a puppy. The paw was` that came later. She didn't have it tucked under and I` and I thought, 'Whoa,' cos that's the thing that we've always wondered ` why she wouldn't like it being touched and that was` in no way could you see that she favoured it, not favoured it. Keith's also surprised by his physical reaction during the reading. Maybe I was emotional, but I felt something. There was a strange feeling in the pit, like, solar plexus, which might have just been happiness, cos it was like, 'Right, this guy's at least worked out our dog.' But I've never seen her with a stranger ever, ever behave that way since we've had her, not a single person. not a single person. Do you think that you have interpreted his words to match, or do you feel that` that Jay is on the level ` he can actually communicate with animals? Um, look, I have to say, seriously, I am a sceptic with all this sort of stuff, but I am open-minded, but I do think that, you know, we didn't give him any prompts. All we did was our dog just sat in front of the man and, you know, to have given back this information, it's` it's quite rare, so I think he really nailed it, actually. He's a charmer, if he's not a psychic ` I'll put it that way. YLVIS' 'WHAT DOES THE FOX SAY?' Pet readings are a side earner for Jay at the moment, but who knows? Whatever you think about what you've just seen, he did give some of the owners a greater sense of connection to their pets. Will you keep doing readings with all kinds of animals? Will you keep doing readings with all kinds of animals? Oh, I am willing to do all sorts. < Give it a go? < Give it a go? Yeah, definitely, because I believe that if they've got a brain, or if they've got a soul, then they've got something to say. Yep, looking forward to the online arguments about that story tonight. Uh, if you're interested, Jay's details will be posted on our Facebook page. Next up on 20/20 ` a family left wondering who they really are. It involves a fertility clinic and a monster unleashed from the grave. Stunning story, bizarre story. They are warning others... Convicted felon... Convicted felon... It shakes your world, absolutely, because everything you knew to be true, all of a sudden wasn't. Welcome back. Imagine finding out that your child is in fact not your child, and on top of that, that the person at the fertility clinic that helped you conceive, had swapped out the provided sperm for his own. And if it's happened once, how many other times has it happened before? UNSETTLING MUSIC It started off as a hobby researching family history. So it gets addictive. > So it gets addictive. > Yep. And, um, boy, did I get bit by the bug. But what Pam Branum uncovered would reveal an unthinkable secret about her 21-year-old daughter. It involves a fertility clinic and a monster unleashed from the grave. A stunning story, bizarre story... They're warning others... Convicted felon... Convicted felon... It shakes your world, because everything that you knew to be true all of a sudden wasn't. You know, you're like, pinching yourself, going, 'This is like the worst dream I've ever had. 'I am gonna wake up and it didn't happen.' It happened. It happened. It happened. It happened in Salt Lake City. Newlyweds John and Pam Branum are trying to start a family with no success. So as a last resort they go to a fertility clinic here on the campus of the University of Utah. A friendly lab technician shows them a photo collage above his desk of babies conceived by artificial insemination. I looked at those pictures and I thought, 'This is gonna be it. Maybe this is gonna happen for us.' But something about the lab tech doesn't sit right with John. I remember handing him the sperm specimen, and he gave me this just sort of evil smile. It just made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I thought, 'Whoa.' Boo! (CHUCKLES) John's reaction is soon forgotten, though, with the arrival nine months later of a beautiful baby girl, Annie. Couldn't have been happier. Not a creature was stirring. Flash through the years... First steps. Trick or treat. I love you, Dad. Look at her go. ...and the memories. She's musically inclined, and we always, kind of, wondered where that came from. Annie grows into a beautiful, bright young woman, a college whizz-kid who studies astrophysics and surprises her parents with her gift for math. I barely made it through Calculus 1. Well, in Annie's second year of college she was doing Calculus 3, making A's, and I'm thinking there's a recessive gene at work there, right? With her nest now empty, Pam picks up a hobby and gets hooked on researching the family tree. She'd be up to 2 or 3 o'clock in the morning doing this. These days anyone can stick a swab inside their cheek, go online, and for a few bucks, discover relatives and health histories they never knew they had. Pam Branum swabbed the whole family. I thought it was really interesting how it tells you about your health. It tells you where you come from. As expected, when the results come back,... You can see how it's totally lit up. ...Pam finds that Annie shares 50% of her mom's DNA. But what about her dad? And it said that they shared zero DNA. I was in a panic. You know, I was in a complete panic. Annie walked through the door, didn't say a word, gave me a big hug, started sobbing. I think it took a very long time for it to sink in. I think it took a very long time for it to sink in. What was it that sunk in? Trying to comprehend what it meant that he wasn't my biological father. And then, who is? The Branums say they couldn't get answers from the university. It would take a DNA detective to get to the bottom of it. They wanted to know what her biological heritage was on her paternal side. Finding biological fathers is a specialty of CeCe Moore, a genetic genealogist in southern California. Desperate for answers, Pam sends her an email. This is right up my alley. She tells Pam to send Annie's DNA to multiple online databases. In this type of work, we always say if we can find a second cousin, or a predicted second cousin, we're pretty much in business. We can usually solve the case. Moore's hunch pays off and the plot thickens with a single match between Annie's DNA and this total stranger in Minnesota, Carla Evans. What this retired school secretary knows will blow open the whole story. She asked me if I had a relative that might have donated sperm. And, I said, 'Yes, as a matter of fact I did.' And I said, 'Well, can you tell me where he` he lives?' And I said 'Well, he lived in Salt Lake City a lot, 'and I know he used to work for a fertility clinic there.' And I thought, 'OK, that's it. That's it.' That relative was Carla's cousin Tom Lippert. Pam and Carla exchange photos and suddenly pieces of the puzzle start falling into place. When I first saw Annie's graduation picture, it looks almost identical to Tom's graduation picture. When I saw that photo, I just knew that Tom was the` the father. She also recalls some things that might explain Annie's interest in music and her college ambitions. Well, Tom was very talented. He was very intelligent. He went to Notre Dame law school. He was also musical. And I looked at those pictures, and I recognized him. You recognized him? You recognized him? He was the man at the clinic. I could picture all those baby pictures behind him, the ones he was so proud of. He had made a big deal out of the fact that, 'These were all of the families that I've helped conceive.' This is so creepy. Picturing him sitting next to that wall is chilling. And I just thought to myself, 'This wasn't a mistake. This was done intentionally.' But the story dead-ends in a cemetery. Tom Lippert died in 1999. Case closed until, that is, Carla Evans drops a bombshell. And said 'Pam, there's something I need to tell you and I want to be totally up front with you 'about who my cousin was and what he did.' Tom kidnapped this young woman. That's right. Tom Lippert was a convict, a kidnapper who gained national attention in 1975, sentenced to six years in prison for abducting a young woman. The details would unhinge everyone. He held her for three weeks, sometimes in a metal studded box. For me, that was as devastating, almost, as finding out. After getting out of prison, Lippert married a nurse, Jean, and settled in this quiet Salt Lake neighbourhood. He terrorized the neighbourhood kids. We were so scared we would walk on the other side of the road. Tessa Murdoch says Lippert threw rocks, broke windows and even made the local news. Did you throw these rocks last night? Did you throw these rocks last night? Absolutely not! I never knew why he hated kids so much. Ironic, because hating kids didn't stop him from conceiving them, swapping his sperm for that of patients while working as a lab tech in the fertility clinic at the University of Utah. At the time, the clinic did not do criminal background checks on prospective employees. We are deeply sorry for any anxiety this has caused to our patients. Finally, this week the university admitted that many lab records were destroyed. They can only guess how many sperm samples were handled, or mishandled, by Tom Lippert. Cases could soon be coming out of the woodwork. Let's just say a thousand might be an estimate of people who might be affected. DNA detective CeCe Moore created a blog that's already gotten responses from at least five more possible Lippert offspring, who'd be Annie's half-siblings. You think there are other families out there right now, who were duped just like you? I know it. I know without a doubt. I'm starting to hear from them. TEARFULLY: I wouldn't wish this on any other family. Still, the Branums know their turmoil is far outweighed by the one beautiful blessing that came out of it ` their daughter, Annie. What have you learned? About yourself? About your family? What have you learned? About yourself? About your family? That we're just the same. My dad is my dad, regardless of whether or not he's biologically related to me. He's the one who raised me. Next up on the show ` a teacher-pupil relationship that breaks all the rules. He's a child. That's what the law said. A marry schoolteacher they had trusted with their son was having sex with him. And tonight, for the first time, the secret that began in classroom 308 is finally unravelling. Welcome back. Most of us have a teacher we remember ` the one that had an influence, showed a special interest and made a mark on our lives. Well, there is also such a thing as too much special interest. A pupil-teacher relationship, for example, that ends in a police standoff. New developments in the case of a local middle school teacher caught having sex with a child. Late today she received her punishment. It's the story thrust back into the spotlight just this week. After the first headlines shocked much of Houston, a parent's nightmare come true. He's a child. That's what the law said. A married school teacher they had trusted with their son was having sex with him. And tonight, for the first time, the secret that began in classroom 308 is finally unravelling. Alex and Jenny Pallais will never forget that first day at Memorial Middle School, one of the top schools in Houston. Bringing their son to that front door, newly adopted, rescued from distant relatives from a life of poverty in Costa Rica. They began the adoption process when he was just 9 years old. It took five years to get him here. Do you remember the trip to bring him to America? Oh, definitely, and he was so excited. 'Oh my God, this is my new` my new life.' His new life in America. His new life in America. In America. When we arrived to Houston, he was so surprised, amazed looking at the buildings, how tall the buildings were. And he was so happy to be at his new home. And soon his new school. I walked Jimmy to school. He was very nervous. Do you remember your first day of school? Do you remember your first day of school? I didn't like it. So you walked into that school not speaking a word of English? So you walked into that school not speaking a word of English? No. I knew just hello and that's it. You said to Jimmy, 'You will survive this.' Oh, yes. Oh, yes. It will get better. Oh, yes. It will get better. It will get better. The boy came to America with big dreams of playing soccer, of college one day. One of his first trips, to NASA, with his new parents. This is the young face of the boy who was also getting help at his new school. There was an English teacher assigned to give him extra help with his classes ` 28-year-old Kathryn Camille Murray, who was married. Some of the boys thought Ms Murray was pretty. Do you remember the first time you met her? Do you remember the first time you met her? Yes. Was she nice? Was she nice? Yes, she was nice. She started helping me a lot with my homework. Jimmy found comfort in her classroom. You would take all your classes and then you would go to her for help or sometime during the day? Yes. I started liking the feeling that I was feeling for her. The teacher and student were growing closer. When do you start hearing about Ms Murray? We went to the open house and I say, 'Hello, Ms Murray, I'm Jimmy's mom.' And immediately she looks at me and says, 'Oh. Jimmy's my favourite student. He's so well behaved.' Really? That that struck you as strange? Really? That that struck you as strange? I thought it was kind of strange. And what was Jimmy saying about Ms Murray at home? And what was Jimmy saying about Ms Murray at home? 'Oh, she's so pretty.' And I say, 'Yeah, she's a pretty lady.' Hey, every kid goes through that, has a crush on a teacher. You think, 'This is our adolescent son.' This is an adolescent son with just a simple crush, that's it. We thought nothing of it. And in all of his classes Jimmy is getting A's and B's. So it was like, OK, so she's actually doing good for him, helping him. But there was more. At school Jimmy says there was something about the way she would look at him. When you would walk into that room, would she smile? When you would walk into that room, would she smile? She looked at me different. She looked at you differently? She looked at you differently? Yes. Is that when you sensed that she had feelings for you, too? Uh-huh, yes. Before Christmas break he writes a note revealing his love for his teacher, but then tears it up into pieces and gave it to her to throw away. Instead, she keeps the letter. And when he returns to school, a surprise. She said, 'I read your letter.' She put it back together. She put it back together. Yes, and she told me, 'I really like you, for real.' And I said, 'I really like you,' and she told me, 'I know, but we can't have anything.' She told you, you couldn't have anything? Jimmy is staying after school nearly every day now. Then one afternoon he doesn't come home from school. His parents frantically begin looking for him through the empty hallways, everywhere, even classroom 308. His father finds the custodian. We saw the custodial lady. She said, 'They were just here. They left.' There was no sign of him. Suddenly Jimmy appears at home. Holding his arm like this. Holding his arm like this. With blood. Holding his arm like this. With blood. He couldn't` He had no words. And as soon as he spoke, he just started crying. He would cry for nearly an hour and then offer a story. Jimmy told his parents he'd been in the car with Ms Murray and they had an argument. He just told us that he was in the car and he jumped out of the car. So I was like, 'What happened?' And the only thing he said was, 'I told her that I like her.' My wife and I are looking at each other, 'OK, so this sounds like a lover's quarrel.' They immediately reach out to Ms Murray. But she mentions nothing about Jimmy in her car. So at that moment, you think there's something going on. So at that moment, you think there's something going on. It's going on. She is lying. They tell Ms Murray their son needs to be taken out of her class. She says she'll move him. Weeks go by. Life at home returns to normal. Every night you all sit down at dinner table? Every night you all sit down at dinner table? We'd all four sit at the dinner. He stopped talking about Ms Murray. He stopped talking about Ms Murray. He stopped talking about Ms Murray. He stopped talking about Ms Murray. He stopped talking about Ms Murray. We go, OK. We thought it was over. But it was far from over. They were now talking on Facebook. Jimmy says he messaged Ms Murray that he wanted to kiss her. And that she replied, 'I want to see that.' She wanted you to kiss her? She wanted you to kiss her? Yes. Monday I came to my school early. I went straight to her and I kiss her. When I stopped kissing her, I walked to my first class. You were thinking to yourself you had to get back to her. You were thinking to yourself you had to get back to her. Yes. You went and asked her how she felt about what happened. Yes, and she told me, 'OK, I want you to kiss me again.' So that's when I kiss her again. That's when everything started. That's when everything started. Yes. That's when everything started. Yes. Physically. Did she ever say to you, 'This is wrong'? Did she ever say to you, 'This is wrong'? Not after I kiss her. And tonight here, look at this. For the first time on 20/20, the school surveillance tapes showing the teacher meeting privately in her classroom behind closed doors, over and over again, with her middle school student. She can be seen scanning the hallway, sometimes walking out with Jimmy. Other days they leave in different directions. While at home, what Jimmy's parents think is a welcome sign, the school dance. And Jimmy wants to go with the friends he's now made. No sign of Ms Murray. And are you hoping that Jimmy's going to find a girl his own age to have a crush on? Of course. Of course. Of course. But the girl waiting at the dance ` Ms Murray, across the street from the school in the church parking lot. His dad had no idea. I dropped him off, and he saw me leaving. And then he moved on over to meet her across the street. And she's waiting in, of all places, the church across the street. And she's waiting in, of all places, the church across the street. Yes. You'd talked to Ms Murray and said, 'My dad's gonna bring me to the dance.' And the two of you had a plan. And the two of you had a plan. Yes. The boy she'd been warned to stay clear of she was now taking away from that school dance. She had her own playlist. Tonight, 20/20 obtaining the video ` the images of the night she checked into a nearby hotel and bringing her teenaged student through that side door. Did anything happen in the hotel? Did anything happen in the hotel? Yes. We have sexual relations. You had sex with her? You had sex with her? Yes. A secret the teacher helped Jimmy keep. But not for long. Suddenly, a disturbing phone call from the principal. He confided in another teacher that he had kissed Ms Murray. That 'I kissed Ms Murray'. That 'I kissed Ms Murray'. That's correct. And then the selfies ` the photographs they took of themselves kissing. Images that would break a mother's heart. And tonight, for the first time here, we see them after becoming a key part of this case. Then another major blow. Jimmy and his mother sitting together, when suddenly the mother's cell phone goes off. She'd let Jimmy borrow it. And that teacher, Ms Murray, was now texting Jimmy. But the mother was receiving the message. The teacher's message... A mother looking down at her cell phone, stunned. I said, 'Jimmy, I need to go to the restroom. I have to put water on my face.' And I say, 'OK, this is not happening.' And that mother had not even heard the worst of it. The story that began in classroom 308 in this Houston middle school involving the 28-year-old married Ms Murray and the student she met at 14 at the beginning of the school year was about to take yet another dramatic turn. The adopted boy who spoke not a word of English was getting help from her at the start of the year and soon much more inside that classroom. Prosecutors say she was writing love notes to the boy. READS: Write with me. You're already my muse. I think we could create something amazing together. 'You are already my muse,' she says. Yes. He's providing an illusion to her. She's given him basically a fantasy. But now that fantasy was meeting reality. The teacher in a standoff with police, caught at her father's house with her teenage student inside. The home surrounded, Ms Murray has no choice but to give herself up. Were you there? When she came out of that house? Oh, yeah, we were there. I wanted to make sure she'd see us. Oh, yeah, we were there. I wanted to make sure she'd see us. Was she in handcuffs? Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. She was in handcuffs. Oh, yeah. She was in handcuffs. Oh yeah, they had, like, 16 police. Finally, for the parents, relief that Ms Murray was locked up and away from Jimmy, but then the new challenge ` a son who was falling into a dangerous depression, feeling he was the one guilty for putting the teacher there. Were you having suicidal thoughts? Were you having suicidal thoughts? Yes. A lot. What were you thinking? What were you thinking? That maybe if I was going to kill myself they forgot about this and` You were thinking if you killed yourself, everyone would forget about this? Yes. Alex, what's the hardest part for you? You're dropping off your kid at a psychiatric ward. He's trying to kill himself, and he believes his life is worthless. And you feel so helpless. It's a feeling that no parent should go through. Tonight, Jimmy says he is doing better, telling me he can finally smile again. Do you now see that there's a future? Do you now see that there's a future? I know that there's a future. You know there's a future. You know there's a future. Yes. And late this week, the future of Ms Murray decided. Former teacher in Houston was sentenced... Former teacher in the Spring Branch ISD learned her fate today. That blonde teacher who the boys in school once thought was pretty with a changed appearance. She's already pleaded guilty and now about to learn her fate. She crossed the line as far as you can go. It's a huge violation of trust. All of us as parents have a right to know that when we send our children to school, they're not just gonna learn, they're safe. The judge sentencing Ms Murray. She'll spend one year in jail and then probation. She was told cannot see Jimmy and she gave up her teaching licence. She will also have to register as a sex offender. And then everyone in that courtroom saw that smile to her family as she left the court. And when Jimmy's parents sitting right there heard 'one year in jail', they were aghast. Had this been a 27-year-old man abusing a 15-year-old girl, the judgment in there would have been completely different. What has she done to your son's life? What has she done to your son's life? I think it took his innocence away. That was his first time having sex. She, uh, robbed him of his childhood. Ms Murray, her family and her defence team have repeatedly turned down requests from 20/20 to talk about the case. They cite her ongoing treatment for bipolar disorder. Her attorney only saying this as he left the courthouse... We will respect the family's request to keep this private, and that's all we have to say. What's been the hardest part for you? It's, like,... you had the boy with all the dreams. And then you have a boy thinking that his life is over. So instead of looking at him going to a soccer game and being so happy, this is nothing in your life. We brought you here to be happy, to have a future. They have repeatedly told their son he should have never crossed that line and that regardless of what that teacher told him and wrote to him in those notes, none of it was right. Do you still love her? Do you still love her? Yeah. In the same way? In the same way? No. Do you think you'll see her again one day? Do you think you'll see her again one day? Maybe. Tonight, with one year in jail for that teacher, there is still fear at Jimmy's house, fear that the teacher, now getting divorced, will try to see their son again. That same teacher who first met Jimmy around the time this photo was taken, his first trip to NASA in his first few weeks of school. That young face now forever changed. And a mom who tonight says she will never give up trying to protecting her son. And we don't know what is going to happen, and that's the biggest fear I have. Your biggest fear is that she`? Your biggest fear is that she`? Oh yeah, that's the biggest` He is still a child, and he was a child. And that's what we're asking for ` justice.
