DUE TO THE LIVE NATURE OF THE VOTE 2014 LEADERS' DEBATE, WE APOLOGISE FOR THE LACK OF CAPTIONS FOR SOME ITEMS. CAPTIONS BY GLENNA CASALME AND VIRGINIA PHILP. CAPTIONS WERE MADE POSSIBLE WITH FUNDING FROM NZ ON AIR. COPYRIGHT ABLE 2014 GOOD EVENING, AND WELCOME TO THE FINAL ONE NEWS VOTE 2014 ELECTION DEBATE. FOR THE LAST TIME BEFORE POLLING DAY, JOHN KEY AND DAVID CUNLIFFE COME FACE TO FACE. TONIGHT WE'RE LIMITED TO HALF AN HOUR, SO WE'RE MOVING AT PACE AND DON'T HAVE TIME FOR SERMONS AND LONG-WINDED DISSERTATION. You've won the coin toss. If it is a is spying on us, why on earth are they? I don't think they are. There's no evidence to support that. But the same day you say they could be, you also say that they're not. 9 they aren't what I said is under the laws, legitimately, there are some information about the Nzers. In the end, there is a lot that allows them to gather information about some countries. And we do share with them. We are big benefactor of those security protocols how much he actually going on? Are you an expert on the subject? I think I'm reasonably knowledgeable. So you do know it but you just don't want to tell us. Our intelligence agencies are there to protect us. In fact, no former prime ministers have had transparencies about security. Do you think he's lying? I wouldn't say he's lying, but that's not clear enough for the NZ people. When an American agency can see a Nzers Gmail, I think that's fine. You got John key who is in charge of it. You got the GCSB how many experts you want to say there's no problem here before you agree that there is the problem? It should've been called a Trojan horse. But the Prime Minister got have to it the critical part is not in the parliament. It's that the Prime Minister did not tell the public that he's building it. He did not consider the possibility that was being discussed. That is not good enough for NZ. Was the point of that? Because it did happen. It was billed by the Prime Minister's own admission. The head said that the probe was not inserted. The project was being implemented but nobody was brief. As promised in NZ, the advice I had was to really look into getting NZ secrets/ the great irony about this is that you got Kim Dotcom said friends saying that the GCSB is spying on Nzers but what they're doing is that they're protecting Nzers. There has not been met any mass surveillance done on a Nzers. No leader around the world will say categorically that is intelligence agency does not gather intelligence. I am going to back you up on this, John. Which is exactly why we need to go through these principles. Nzers do need to be protected and I agree with John. But Nzers also need their right to privacy. Both talk over each other the GCSB has assured us that's fine but let's go back to first principles. I asked the Prime Minister if there will ever be a case that Nzers information was accessed without a judge's permission. Why do we have this intelligence agencies? Why did Helen Clark back them? I'll tell you why. Let me finish. The reason why we haven't is because Nzers face real threats in the spymaster NZ, I can either choose to walk away from protecting Nzers and doing my job. I will never walk away from my job. All talk over each other stop it. Crunch numbers for me. How is it going to work? We have more than national plus its ragtag of right-wing nationals if you think Internet mother is gonna go with John key after all this I don't think so. I am with you. I don't want Dotcom and his mates. What I'm saying is a three way government works. No, it doesn't. Stop. Just let me through the numbers. 25 for laborer 34 for greens national has 46 and it's very close this ball actually hangs on whether: Craig's conservatives get across the line. I think that's a prospect that ought to concern NZ. Correction: Colin Craig the policies that party stands for represents the modern NZ. I don't know what I want Nzers to do. If they want a strong government and a strong economy... It's as simple as this. If you want to have steak for dinner tonight, buyers date don't buy a lamb chop. If you want national to be your government, give the vote to us. If you look at the poll of polls, and you'll see that national is in a position to provide that strength and stability. In the end, and every much every poll, that is not strength... when he is saying that they're not relying on Kim Dotcom, that is very cute. Labour is being up front about who is going to work with. That is the greens in NZ first. No, not with Dotcom. Yeah, you're with Dotcom. Your shortchanging the public. The irony is you started talking about the five headed monster. You can go and pass go and collect $200. There are many options available potentially to national. What I do know David, you're interrupting. What I know on Saturday night is that Nzers are going to vote. I know it's going to be a national led government. If it's David's government, you have to have Kim Dotcom there. TIME FOR A BREAK, BUT STAY WITH US. COMING UP ` NATIONAL'S AND LABOUR'S PROMISES FOR THE FIRST 100 DAYS. David Cunliffe, let's start with you. Can you make Winston peters Prime Minister? No. He's asked for Prime Minister last time and he's going to ask again. He's not going to get it. I'm proud to lead a unified caucus. Everybody wants to win and everybody wants to lead NZ. How high can high can he go? Prime Minister's? Can he be speaker? That something to discuss. My suspicion is that Winston peters wants to make a difference. And he wants a third term. As you can see in the opposition and thatcampaign trail, in the end, national has a lot of potential options. Is a big difference between ruling things in and pulling things out. No, don't do that. What will do is sit down with a party that we choose. What I do know is that last six years we provided a strong government. The potential for NZ is tremendous. Let's go to have a proper discussion not a fan of the TV cameras but one that's going to provide stability. Well, heaven forbid that the public should be informed about the talks. My next question is do you honestly believe Winston? You can't hold a negotiation to the holder. I've known him long enough longer than John has. Yes he played his cards close to his chest. The greens want a clean economy. That is what we have in common. You had your turn. The party vote for Labour is the we've changed government. They have so much in common that last week the greens are pretty much abandoning them. David, I know you don't like it, but the Jews is greens said they were abandoning labour. They don't agree. So you sit there and say on Saturday or Sunday morning, is laboring greens at the government the Maori Party might cause you some difficulty it's my turn, John. Yes, John has a very different basket to deal with. Some of them would call them weirdos. The shotgun under and the... Look at their record. Let's be serious about it. What act is is a brand that national runs for policy charter schools. That is the purpose of ACT. They don't want to put their brand on the charter schools. Yeah, whatever. We are the party that's been up front. We are the government that has turned the economy around. We have delivered for better public services for Nzers with a plan for the future. We have a plan and we have that stability. First 100 days. Start an inquiry into the GCSB. Raise the minimum wage. That minimum wage in the 90 day thing that you want to repeal. We have the necessary analysis of that. The real evidence revealed that in the real data. If it starts costing jobs? Would you review that? We want parents to be able to put food on the table for kids. Your first 100 days, there's been a criticism of your campaign. Were we going now? We're gonna focus on the opportunity in continuing to deliver for Nzers education, making sure we lift the professionals in education. We'll be there continue investing infrastructure and science and innovation. We would talk about how to get our welfare roll down. You can create just by shifting people around. Both talk over each other just hold on. I will tell you what has happened. We offer $3000 two people who were on long-term benefit to go to Christchurch. Is it better to leave people on welfare? We have to ask that question. Other jobs that are just not being filled? Are you telling me there's no industry in this country that is not looking for work? There is a mismatch between the skills that are available and the demands for skills. We know that we are experiencing a shortage of technicians in ICT. You can create jobs` the jobs are there they just can't find the people. National lacks a considered strategy for high-value growth. A lot of our logs are leaving our ports as unsawn timber. We are not driving our economy into high-value service. Would pick it up. TIME FOR A BREAK NOW. COMING UP ` PREDICTIONS ON ELECTORATES. RACES TO WATCH AND HOW SATURDAY WILL UNFOLD. Welcome back. The remaining moments. Pick up that point that you wanted to. Those opportunities are out there for New Zealanders. We have to go after them. I can say this. You can choose to put in lots of tax and lots of regulation. We can stall our economy and strangle that off... if it does not go well for you Saturday night, do you have a mandate to stay on? I am focused on winning. No, no, no. You are on the night quitting if you do not get up? I do not have a plan B. New Zealand needs a National led government. You will stay for three years? Yes. Do you have a succession plan? Sometime in the three-year period are you thinking about Stephen? We will win the election on Saturday night and we will win the election in 2017 is to arrogant for New Zealanders. I am 53. I'm pretty young. Some electorateS that you are thinking about on Saturday night there are interesting. New Plymouth. Te Tai Tokerau. Do you have a pickup? I think the wild card is Hutt South. Chris Bishop will win. You will concede that Labour are going to win Napier. I think we will win Hutt South. What have you learnt from the campaign? New Zealanders deserve better than they have. Nobody is blaming John for the GFC or the earthquakes. New Zealanders want 100,000 new homes. What have you learned? You have got to expect the unexpected. You have to continue what we have done. We have to trust the New Zealand public. We have seen a national government delivering over the last six years. The one thing I do know is that the politics from the left have been negative. That is not true. What New Zealanders want is hope and aspiration in a national government is going to deliver that. I think we have been around doing everything we could do. There has been so much static from other outsiders that had has taken a bit of air from us debating some issues. Do you have a regret, John? We have not been able to discuss some issues with New Zealanders. Too much time has been spent on one individual and too much time has been spent on things that New Zealanders don't care that much about. Not enough time has been spent on how magnificent this country is and how the future in front of us is great. Very quickly. Call it for me on election night. 50% plus between the three of us. The government is on a knife edge. Your prediction, John? 47% for national. I think national is going to have a number of options on Saturday night. Good on you. THANKS TO YOU BOTH DAVID CUNLIFFE AND JOHN KEY. GOOD LUCK. THANKS TO YOU AT HOME FOR WATCHING. HOWEVER YOU VOTE ON SATURDAY, PLEASE VOTE. RIGHT, THERE'S MORE TO COME. WE HAVE ONLINE ANALYSIS OF THE DEBATE STARTING SHORTLY. THAT'S ON ONENEWS.CO.NZ/VOTE 2014. IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY, CHECK OUT VOTE COMPASS WHILE YOU'RE THERE. AND, FINALLY, JOIN ME AND THE VOTE 2014 TEAM HERE ON TV ONE AT 7 O'CLOCK FOR COMPREHENSIVE COVERAGE AS YOUR VOTES ARE COUNTED. SEE YOU THEN. CAPTIONS BY GLENNA CASALME AND VIRGINIA PHILP.
