An image of Te Matatini champions, Te Whanau a Apanui, was manipulated more than 60 ways as an online meme. While some laughed at the jibe, others, including those featured in the photo, are taking matters seriously, as Oriini Tipene-Leach reports. Tiare Tawera is used to being made fun of. It's been his profession as a Presenter on the TV show Pukana since 2006. If it were just me, it wouldn't be a problem. A couple of his haka peers in Te Whanau a Apanui, He admits he laughed at first when he saw meme images of him going viral on the internet. It's degrading. We got in touch with the company to discuss the issue, and they sent us this reply. More FM picked up on the story and ran with it on their own website and social media platforms. It reached more than a thousand shares before it was removed this morning due to several official complaints being made. More FM issued this apology via their website just within the last couple of hours. But whether or not is enough remains to be seen. Te Karere has chosen not to publish online or via broadcast any of the said images in respect of the performers, the team, and the wider iwi concerned who've been already been ridiculed enough. Defamation aside, there are also copyright issues to consider. Te Matatini banned any outside photography The rights to the pictures are under question, as they are online, and are therefore fair game to be manipulated by anyone who wishes to do so.
