Sunday ` brought to you by the first ever Mazda CX-3. Tonight on Sunday ` born into a secret world. # Take me to the mountain. # Takes a long time to get all that indoctrination out. Gloriavale uncovered. They're like God on Earth. Whatever they say is what God's saying. Families who have left reveal their heartache. Basically, they just told me there was no way I could be with my husband. He was evil, deceived, full of the Devil. I didn't wanna lose my salvation. And discover what it's like to enter the world for the first time. You may kiss the bride. Moment I left there, I was released from the Devil's hands. BOTH LAUGH Then ` I was shocked and heartbroken in that moment. Face to face with his brother's killer. All that waiting, Paul. Up, up, up! One man's journey to educate us about sharks. What do you think of this animal right here ` right in front of us? Look at this thing ` it's huge. Captions were made possible with funding from NZ On Air. Copyright Able 2015 Kia ora, I'm Miriama Kamo. Rosanna says she was brainwashed from birth. She had no personality, no ability to make decisions for herself, no real sense of who she was. She didn't even know what clothes, colours or music she liked. When this young Kiwi mother stepped out of Gloriavale, following her husband, she was terrified. Not just because she had to take control of her life, but because she believed she could be damned to the Devil. As Janet Mcintyre reports, many more are defying the leaders of the Gloriavale community near Greymouth on the West Coast, making the decision to leave. It was really incredible for me to see. They just turned on me like a pack of wolves. Rosanna Overcomer, a faithful, unquestioning member of Gloriavale for 27 years, until she decided to leave. They really seriously do believe that if I walk out, I'm sending myself and my kids to Hell. # Take me to the mountain # of the Lord. It's an idyllic life at Gloriavale. (SCREAMS) (SCREAMS) CHILDREN LAUGH That's the way they want us to see it. Large, happy families, sweetness and light, freedom from the sins of the outside world. The hold on the people here is their love of God. That's where the hold. They love God. Women submit to their husbands. Just take me and make me yours. PEOPLE LAUGH Everyone submits to the Lord... Hallelujah! Hallelujah! ALL: Hallelujah. ...or else the consequences are cruel... ...the scripture says they are. ...and extreme. Basically, they just told me there was no way I could be with my husband. He was evil, deceived, full of the devil. Rosanna's husband, Elijah, refused to submit and was booted out. Puts his hands on my hand and said, 'Elijah, in the name of Jesus Christ, 'you've got evil spirits in you.' And, like, whoa. They're like God on Earth. Like, whatever they say is what God says. UNSETTLING MUSIC Eight years ago, Sunday cameras were invited in to document life at Gloriavale and to interview its leader, a man who calls himself Hopeful Christian. Hello. I was asked to respect the strict Gloriavale dress code. Hello. Welcome. Thank you very much. Thanks for inviting us here. Welcome to the new land here. Oh, I see. What's new about it? What do people give up to live here? They give up themselves ` self. Absolutely self. Um, they give up self, but it's like emptying your pocket full of dirt and getting a pocket full of diamonds. That what it's like. Um, you get rid of some of this other stuff that we can all do without. And what do you get? You get all the love of all the other people. You get all the expertise of all the other people. You get all the support of all the other people. What more can you want than that? He was proud to show us his usually closed community. ALL: I-O-U. The bustling industry ` dairy, moss, a commercial airline. We are not waiting for the government to provide work for us. We must provide work for our children. Good on ya, girl. Go for it. He put forward people to talk to us. ALL CHEER Are you curious about what life is like outside? Evil. Full of evilness and sin, and I don't want that in my life. The hard-working women and girls consigned to domestic duties. What's your job? Tomato sauce. How old are you? 10. How long have you been working in the kitchen? Um,... five years. Really? LAUGHTER They're made to wear neck-to-toe uniforms at all times to preserve their modesty. This is the way we dress, because it's in the scripture. The children were polite, innocent. Have you kids ever heard of, um, Santa Claus? ALL: No. Never heard of him? Never heard of him? ALL: No. Don't know who he is? ALL: No. Oh, well, I've heard of him, but, um, and I've seen him on a film. Have you? And what colour outfit does he wear? Um, I can't remember. # ...waters so my soul... # We were even guests at a wedding ` arranged, as is the custom at Gloriavale, by the community leaders. I thank God for giving you to me, and I'll always be faithful to you. I'll never lust after another woman. But I'll keep myself for you. Josiah and Angel, wearing the regulation wedding frock, barely knew each other before they were chosen to be husband and wife. I know that my love for you will... grow, and I love you so much. Also at that wedding, Elijah and Rosannah Overcomer. That's Elijah in the background. But they were not among those we spoke to. Do you remember when we came? Do you remember when we came? Yeah, i do. What did you make of me as an outsider? A stroppy woman wearing jeans. No, you can't accuse me of that. I never wore jeans. No, but I do remember Hopeful saying that you would. ALL LAUGH Would what? Wear jeans. Really? I think he was quite offended that it was a woman that was interviewing him. (CHUCKLES) Well, he doesn't like anyone asking questions. Well, he doesn't like anyone asking questions. No. (CHUCKLES) He doesn't. And two years ago, Elijah had some questions of his own for Hopeful Christian. Why do we not have any, um, say in anything? Like, just the average man there didn't really have any say in any decisions. It's all made by the leadership there. and questions about Hopeful Christian's criminal past ` his arrest for sexual offending within the community. do you think it's right that you're a leader here? As far as I knew, the scripture said that he had to be blameless outside the church as well. Like, obviously, no convictions like that, anyway, and he said I had no right to ask him those sort of questions. Hopeful Christian, formerly Neville Cooper was convicted for indecent assault on a young woman and served two years jail the 1990s ` a subject I, too, tried to broach with him. The sexual assault. The sexual assault. Look, we're not` we're not into it. They want to believe what they want believe. They want to say what they want to say. They can turn anything good into evil. Anything they can, they can turn that into evil. at the very least, you'd say Hopeful Christian, who has been the sect leader for over 40 years, has unusual views about sexuality ` that children are physically and emotionally adults by the age of 12. Now, here's a problem ` you've got children ` we call them children ` 12 year olds, 13 year olds, a girl` a girl. She is capable of being a mum. Is she a child? Yes. Yes, she's called a child, but really, she's a woman now. She is capable of being a mother. Are you saying a 12-year-old girl is considered a woman? In the sense of physical development, she's a woman. Elijah says Hopeful Christian drummed it into him too, as a boy, to marry young, have sex, make babies. Son, you're mature when you're 12 or 13, so you should be mature spiritually to be able to get married at that age. And then we just` The government's made these laws that we have to wait until we're 16, so when you're 16, you should be ready to get married. And have a family. And have a family. Have a family. He said this to you? He said this to you? Yeah. What did you think when you were 12, 13? What did you think when you were 12, 13? I was like yeah! Yeah! LAUGHTER As children, you were actually thinking about getting married and having kids? That's what you were trained to have as a goal ` to be ready for marriage at a young age. Up next ` ready or not, marriage is sometimes forced on unwilling couples. I didn't feel like I was ready to get married. They got us to sign the papers and... ...then they sent us away. ...then they sent us away. Then they sent us away, yeah. she says, 'I feel sick every time I every time I think about marrying him,' so... But she had to. Is that the deal? Oh yeah, you're pretty much condemned to Hell if you don't do what the leaders say. Are you sick of feeling sick? Ever find it hard remembering last night? Are your loved ones over your drinking? If you're answering 'yeah' a bit too much, maybe we can help you say 'nah'. Welcome back to our story on Gloriavale. Now, a TV2 documentary last year followed a young couple, Pearl and Paul, whose marriage was arranged by community elders. Sunday has been told by Pearl's family that she didn't want to marry Paul. As part of tonight's report, Sunday intended to include part of the documentary showing the wedding, but yesterday we were told by the production company that screening the footage would jeopardise a deal with the Gloriavale community to broadcast a second documentary which is scheduled to run later this year. ALL SING HYMN Rosanna's younger sister Pearl, seen here in 2007, is one of 10 siblings. She is still living inside Gloriavale. A TVNZ documentary last year revealed how she'd been chosen by elders to marry a man called Paul, but according to Pearl's sister and brother-in-law, she wasn't happy about it. Pearl initially said to me that she felt sick every time she thought about marrying him. Elijah called Pearl's brother in Brisbane, who was kicked out of the community years ago. He says, 'I'd do anything to get her out of there,' so he came over from Australia and picked her up. She specifically said to me she didn't want to marry Paul, yes. He was a bit younger than her, not really` not` He's not handsome, in the slightest. Ezra arrived on the West Coast to secretly meet with his sister outside Gloriavale just before the wedding. Pearl, seen here, trying on worldly dresses. But she changed her mind, decided to stay, and the wedding went ahead, in the full glare of the TV cameras. Do you know how happy she is? > Uh, now? I don't know. I haven't spoken to her since that last time. And that's the basis of the Christian faith. That's the way it is at Gloriavale ` families split up, sometimes forever. When Elijah was kicked out for questioning the leaders' all-encompassing authority, he left behind his baffled wife, Rosanna. Basically, they just told me there was no way I could be with my husband. He was evil, deceived, full of the devil. 'You're damming yourself, your kids. There's no chance for any of the family if you go as well.' They're like God on Earth. Like, whatever they say is what God's saying. If they're not God on Earth, what are they? Oh, just stupid men that try and keep a wee group to themselves, and they're pretty dedicated, though. Like, they really believe what they believe, but that doesn't make you right. But there are some things the elders can't control, like the power of natural attraction. I'm thinking god didn't choose you two to be together. Or perhaps he did. Yeah, perhaps he did. Yeah, perhaps he did. Perhaps he did. This couple broke a sacred Gloriavale rule. Joy, seen here in the kitchen when we visited in 2007, and Mordecai secretly began a love affair. They hadn't even been chosen for one another. I probably started liking her when I was 12, I suppose. And how old were you, then? Oh, I probably didn't like him until I was 15. They would pay dearly. Boys and girls are not allowed to be friends, let alone secretly meet and become lovers. Normally outside in the dark somewhere. Where? Where? Oh, there's lots of bush around. And so you'd get together when everyone else was asleep? No, not asleep, just when it was dark and not many people around still. How did you feel about doing that? It was scary in a way, but then I guess it was exciting too. discovered, shamed, banished to an isolated West Coast farm house, they were forced into marriage, both aged 17. I didn't feel like I was ready to get married. Did you actually get married? We didn't have a wedding, but.. but.. ...we signed the papers. Right at the start, they got us to sign the papers and... Right at the start, they got us to sign the papers and... ...then they sent us away. And they sent us away, yeah. They were shut out as punishment and to send a message to the community. It would have been about 8 weeks that I wasn't allowed to have contact with anyone. Anyone at all? Yeah. They had to grovel to get back in. We had to fall on our knees and beg forgiveness and pretty much say that we were happy to do anything to get back in. How do you feel about the fact you never had a proper wedding? I'm pretty sad. Joy's sister Rosanna, meanwhile, was persuaded by her banished husband, Elijah, to step into the world with him. I was going with him no matter what. The right thing to do was for me to be with him. And they just` (CHUCKLES) It was really incredible for me to see ` they just turned on me like a pack of wolves. All of a sudden, because I said I was going to go with him, I was all of a sudden damned. When you walk out, did you feel you were in fact damned? Oh, it definitely all comes back to you. It takes a long time, and me longer, to get all that indoctrination out, yeah. Up next ` what were they stepping into? Did you actually fall into the Devil's hands? Did you actually fall into the Devil's hands? No, I was taken out of them, yeah. The moment I left there, I was released from the Devil's hands. The moment I left there, I was released from the Devil's hands. BOTH LAUGH And finally, for Joy and Mordecai, a proper wedding. You may kiss the bride. With nothing to show for their combined 22 years of labour at Gloriavale, Rosanna and Elijah were now on their own in the outside world, with three small children and expecting another. We had no phone. We had no contacts with anyone outside or anything like that, so we were basically just going to go and take a tent and then go from there and figure out what to do. They got a lift to Christchurch, but when the car broke down, a stranger offered to lend them his own. I just thought he was real crazy ` just wanted to help me out so much. I thought, 'That's strange. These people are meant to be evil,...' '...the people who don't help anybody.' Rosanna and Elijah are not an aberration. A steady stream of families have left Gloriavale. Since we visited eight years ago, 65 people have gone, including 22 in the past two months. Joy and Moredecai ` forced to get married without a ceremony ` left late in 2013. But Joy, torn by messages from within the community, was lured back. What were they saying? They were saying that I know I can't be a Christian out here... and... I know it's God's will for me to be in his church. Inside. Yeah, inside the community, so walking out from there is walking away from God's church. So your connection to the church and the community was more powerful than your connection to Moredecai. I didn't want to lose my salvation,... and I didn't really believe you could be a Christian out here, so... but after just a week, Joy tried to leave again. I said I wanted to go and they were still trying to tell me to stay. She pushed her way through a pack of 20 women to finally escape. It was horrible, but I didn't really care, cos I knew i was doing the right thing, going back to my husband. ALL SING HYMN They've rejected Gloriavale, but not God. On the outside, both families found support from the Baptist church in Timaru. So many people that didn't know me at all helped me out and gave me clothes for all our kids and, yeah, just stuff to get a new home ` furniture, kitchen stuff. These people were awesome. These people were awesome. BOTH LAUGH Completely different to what they'd been led to believe about Christians on the outside. Christians are supposed to only be so-called Christians. They don't really care about you; they only care about themselves. They go to Church on Sunday and they'll have a nice worship service and then they don't care about each other or anyone else during the week and what I saw was exact opposite. They had no experience managing business, handling money, even running a household, but both they're getting ahead, both couples sharemilking in Fairlie, raising their young families. How are you going financially? Oh, brilliant. Yeah, yeah. Oh, brilliant. Yeah, yeah. We've got far more than we ever had in there, in every way ` family, far more knowledge of God, I think we've got real friends now, which is really sad that I've lost my old friends, but I know that the friends we have now aren't going to dump us. Yeah, we've got a lot more. For the first time in their lives, they and other ex-community members are learning the rules of touch, learning to make choices for themselves. You don't actually know what you like or what you don't like. There's a lot of like, 'Oh, I might try that.' 'No, that's not me.' 'I don't actually know who I am.' And actually realising it's OK to be a person and have a personality that's your own. But it's freedom at a price. I'll start from the eldest in the family and go down. That's Hannah, Joseph, Esther. Sisters Rosanna and Joy have cut ties with their six siblings still inside,... Michael, Bithiah, that's myself. ...and their parents. Mum sent us a packet of photos ` Joy and I ` because they had to get rid of all photos that had us in from the community. from the community. Why? Um, cut us off, pretend we don't exist or something. I don't know. So in terms of your and parents and your siblings eyes, you no longer exist. Yeah, pretty much. We're no longer part of the family. Have you tried to persuade your parents to leave? Have you tried to persuade your parents to leave? Yeah. They've spent their lives building the place. For them to walk out would be saying they'd wasted their life, so it's a pretty big ask. When they pass on, will you be able to be part of that? I doubt it. I'll definitely try, but I doubt the community would want me at their funeral or anything, no. So they're starting over, creating their own new families. This morning, as we come together to celebrate the wedding of Joy and Mordecai... As teenagers forced into marriage after their illicit affair, Joy and Mordecai last month finally had the proper wedding they'd been denied. You may kiss the bride. CHEERING Joy in a gown she helped to create, Rosannah and Elijah among the happy guests, which included 46 ex-members of Gloriavale. In general, how have you found the world? In general, how have you found the world? A lot better than what I expected. I mean there's still a lot of evil in the world, but it's all about your heart, not where you are. Very amazing experience. And then at the same time, overwhelming, like, 'How do I actually handle this?' Yeah. (CHUCKLES) Did you actually fall into the Devil's hands? No, I was taken out of them. (LAUGHS) The moment I left there, I was released from the Devil's hands. The moment I left there, I was released from the Devil's hands. BOTH LAUGH ALL CHEER We approached Gloriavale for a response to issues raised in our story. They replied in writing ` 'We do not make comments about other people, 'nor the accusations they make about us to the media. 'Our trust is in God and he is still on the throne. His judgements are righteous.' After the break, we join Sam Young on a journey to find and confront the creature that killed his brother Zac. The bottom line is people are dying. The bottom line is people are dying. Yeah, and that's what makes it particularly difficult down here. Families are losing loved ones, yeah. DRAMATIC MUSIC We got it. We got it. Just the width of its head, eh. Why don't we go and have a look? I am the master of the way. I am the master of the way. ALL CHATTER, LAUGH Hey! Over here, mate. (LAUGHS) Hey! Over here, mate. (LAUGHS) Thank you so much. See ya! Hey, thanks for driving tonight. Hey, thanks for driving tonight. You owe me. Hey, thanks for driving tonight. You owe me. (LAUGHS) Fair enough. Kate was giving me the eye as well. What?! What?! She was. No. No. BOTH LAUGH What's that? What's that? Oh crap. Don't worry about it. You're well under. Don't worry about it. You're well under. Yeah, but it's a lower limit now. Good evening. Any alcohol tonight? Good evening. Any alcohol tonight? Uh, just a couple... with dinner. Good evening. Any alcohol tonight? Uh, just a couple... with dinner. Yeah. She's fine, eh. Stop. That's over 250 micrograms. I now require you to accompany me to the booze bus... Oh stink. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you do say... It's a failed result, ma'am. ...may be given in evidence in court. You could ring a taxi and pick your car up in the morning. Let's call your mum and dad. They're 10 minutes away. Let's call your mum and dad. They're 10 minutes away. We're not calling my parents. CHILDREN ARGUE CHILDREN ARGUE Please. Behave yourselves. No. In the car. INDISTINCT RT CHATTER Hello again. If you lost a loved one to a shark attack, would you want to seek out and go face to face with those dangerous creatures? Well, Sam Young does. His little brother was taken by a 3m tiger shark. So when Sam was given the opportunity to join a breakthrough research voyage to track some of Australia's biggest tiger sharks, he leapt at the chance. For Sam, this deeply personal mission is about making our beaches safer. He's hoping it may help launch a device that'll tell you whether or not sharks may be lurking at your favourite beach. Alex Cullen joined Sam and the crew of Osearch for a spectacular and occasionally spine-chilling adventure. OMINOUS MUSIC Off Australia's tropical coast, a team of American fishermen is shaking up the science of sharks. We're on our way to a group of remote islands off Mackay in north Queensland. It's a prime location for catching and tagging sharks, apex predators we need to know a lot more about. For years, mature adults have been hard to find, hard to catch and even harder to track but what you're about to see could be a game changer. DRAMATIC MUSIC Yeah, we're hooked up. The real problem they had in the past was they just couldn't handle these big massive mature animals. So we're brought together a special ship with a lift, world-class fishermen and world-class scientists. Really, what we're doing is we're giving scientists around the world access they've never had before to do research they've never been able to do and to attach these tags so you can have these real time multi-year tracking of these mature animals. OMINOUS MUSIC Chris Fisher is the skipper of Osearch, a crab-catching ship converted into a floating laboratory. His team has been finding, tracking and tagging the movement of these fascinating and fearsome animals all over the world, except Australia. I see the tracks off Africa, and I see the tracks off the east coast of the United States. I know our tracks off of all the west coast of Central America. And then there's this great big hole in the global map. And it's down under. If all goes according to plan, the work this team's doing here will mean you and I will be able to roll up to a beach and know, with some certainty, if sharks are in the vicinity. And wouldn't that be a good thing? The most important thing we're trying to achieve here is to create the most inclusive tiger shark research expedition in history. I mean, we want to help your scientists advance their knowledge beyond where it's ever gone before. Hopefully we'll make the beaches a safer place by giving people data and information to make beach and ocean-uses decisions that they've never had. < Gidday, Chris. < Gidday, Chris. Nice to see ya again, Alex. How are you? How are you? On your side of the world, this time. Good to see you in Australia waters. Good to see you in Australia waters. That's right. How have you been, man? Really well. Among those with us on this voyage is a bloke who would love nothing more than to know more about tiger sharks ` where they lurk and how they behave. He's Sam Young. A tiger shark took his little brother, Zac. Just gonna step out. What do I have to lose, you know? We're on Earth once and death is inevitable, so, like, pfft, why wouldn't I do that? A young surfer has died after being attacked by a shark on the state's mid-west coast. In November 2013, Zac was bodyboarding with a few mates at a beach off Coffs Harbour in New South Wales. A tiger shark attacked him and severed both his legs. TV: Police say four young men were 200m out, dangling legs off their boards, when something struck from below. His mates dragged him to the beach. He told them he loved them and died from massive blood loss. Dad phoned me and broke the news to me that Zac had passed away from a shark attack. I was shocked and heartbroken in that moment. Sam and Zac would often hit the waves together. They were as close as can be. My last memory of Zac was` was two days before he passed away and I dropped him off. We were out for a night. I dropped him off home and he turned around and said to me, 'I love you, bro.' And, you know, it's a big thing for your younger brother to say that to you. Like, you know, as a man, we're pretty tough guys, and he's just` he really had a soft heart, so it's a great memory to be left with. Brought a couple of photos of my brother. This was on the day that it happened. If you guys wanna have a look at the photos. He's a bit of a character, as you guys can see. So Sam's bravely joining this expedition in memory of his brother. He wants to see first-hand a live tiger shark, just like the one that took Zac. He looks like he was a jokester. On the water all his life, huh? Loved the water? Yeah, just lived, you know, 15 minute walk to the beach since we were young. Two of the guys were actually 14 and they, sort of, helped him in, and it's just amazing that they got him in. They'd seen the shark and all that. What's it like to have him on board? > You know, we've never had an experience of having someone like Sam on board, you know, especially in a situation where we're not really getting, uh` more than anything, we want to get one to help him go through the journey he's on. Very humbling. Courageous young man who's willing to, kind of, put himself out there and tell his story. Boy, I sure hope we have an opportunity to capture a shark and tag a shark and release one with him. RT: We got one in the drum line, OK? It's about a 3.5m tiger shark, OK? OK. We're making our way back to you. We've joined Osearch midway into its mission. It's had some success on the way here from Brisbane. You good? You good? Yeah, it's not a bad shark. Off the coast of Fraser Island, they nab their first tiger, a 3.5m female they named Jada. DRAMATIC MUSIC Good luck, old girl! Little more throttle. Little more throttle. Off the coast near Maroochydore, the team caught and tagged another tiger. They called it Maroochy. Nice. DRAMATIC MUSIC We got it. We got it. And then, a little further north, they catch and tag Sydney. Each shark will go on to play its part in the ongoing bank of knowledge. So the signs are good... Sam will meet a big shark. How are you feeling, mate? How are you feeling, mate? Yeah, good. Yeah? Yeah? Yeah. Excited. Excited? Excited? Excited. It's been a long wait, so... It has, absolutely. Growing up, I didn't` I guess I wasn't too educated on sharks. Like, we` we just knew they were there, but didn't really know much about them, so I think a great way to get to know more about them, and, yeah, I'm just really grateful for the opportunity. The Osearch team has also been waiting a long time to get to Australia. Get her out! When I first met Chris three years ago, he was catching and tagging great white sharks near Cape Cod, off the north-east coast of the United States. If this place looks vaguely familiar, it's because Hollywood came here nearly 40 years ago to make a movie. It was called Jaws. PEOPLE SCREAM Everybody out! Great whites were turning up at local beaches in ever-increasing numbers. Scientists wanted to find out why and if there was a pattern to their movements which could help them improve beach safety. But catching and tagging great whites requires a unique set of skills ` skills that Chris and his team have been developing for close to a decade. It just ate it. I saw first-hand how they carefully handled these incredible creatures. They catch them using a bait and a barbless hook. It just ate it. It just ate it. Standing by. We're ready to go. What happened next was mind-boggling. The boat captain, Brett McBride, dived in front of the shark. He was face to face with a very cranky man-eater. Can see the shark wants to constantly swim outside of the corral. We have to really force him in there. Once they're aware that it's there and they wanna swim outside of it, it's really just redirecting the line. Pull! Pull! Once on board, the platform was raised, and the shark, which is not sedated, secured in a safe position for everyone. Then the science began. Tags in. What's the time past the hour? Spots on. We've already got the parasites, unless we need more. Water flow's good. Water flow's good. OK. Chris and his team have put satellite tags on more than 60 great white sharks around the world. Yeah, girl! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! The sharks can be followed live on computers, mobile phones and tablets by anyone, anywhere. Even back aboard the Osearch, half a world away, in remote Australian waters. Each colour is a different shark. This tracking system is what Chris and his team would like to introduce to Australia to help make our beaches safer by letting us know when tagged great white sharks are nearby. The fact remains, though, you can't tag all sharks. Right. No, you can't tag all sharks, and, you know, what you can really try to do is just tag enough of them to get the rhythm of their lives. On the white sharks side of things, we've started to see that their migrations are ` they just repeat them on a very timely schedule. They have no only an amazing capacity to navigate, but they have some sort of internal calendar that's super accurate. So once you kind of get a rhythm of the male sharks making their one-year migration, they just, kind of, repeat that, and the females do the same, so once you get your thumb on the pulse of that, you kind of know, you know, where and when they are and where and when they are not. Chris has now offered to tag Australia's great whites for free, but has been told to stay away. Here, the CSIRO tags great white sharks in a programme headed by chief researcher, Barry Bruce. He refuses to allow the Osearch team on to his patch, saying, 'Thanks, but no thanks.' His reason? The CSRIO has already tagged 250 great whites and Chris Fisher isn't doing anything they're not already doing. I asked Barry Bruce ` twice ` to go on camera for this story, but he refused. Yeah, a lot of politics down here around it. It's like something I've never experienced anywhere else in the world. Normally, where we go, it's,like, 'Thanks for coming, man.' The CSRIO argues their shark tagging operation, which uses a cradle positioned next to the boat, isn't as stressful to the shark. We were not allowed on their boat. This is footage sent to us from an expedition earlier this year. Can you give me any more reasons as to why ` why they're saying no? I think it's pretty simple ` I think that the` they think the lift might stress the shark. But we have the blood data, and we've given them that data. We know that's not the case. And let's not forget a shark has died on your vessel. Yeah, when we were in South Africa in 2012, we lost a small shark, like, a 2m shark. A little bit less than that. But that wasn't from the lift. That was just because of the way the shark was hooked. And then we changed our whole method from that point forward. You know, and I wanted to put that out there. Like, I chose to push that out there, because I wanted to talk about the ethics of research. You know, if this isn't worth it for all of us, just let me know now and I'll go home. During our time on the boat, we hear reports of yet another fatal shark attack. Shelly Beach, Ballina. A 41-year-old surfer off Ballina, on the New South Wales' north coast. The bottom line is people are dying. Yeah, that's` that's what makes it particularly difficult down here. Families are losing loved ones. Yeah. And so, when you feel like you have an opportunity to maybe help that and you can't, you know, you feel helpless, and that's a really uncomfortable spot for me. It's a reminder of what's at stake with the work these scientists are doing. RADIO CHATTER RT: Sorry, mate. I can't understand that. Too much wind. The weather is closing in, threatening to derail the entire expedition, and Sam's hope of eyeing a big tiger is looking shaky. Except, as we see after the break, Sam does come face to face with a 3m tiger shark and makes a surprising tribute to his brother. She is the biggest tiger shark of the mission so far, and out of the water, she is still a force to be reckoned with. Ooh! Seeing 'em up out of the water like that is just, uh` it gives you an idea, a real understanding, huh? Look at those teeth, would ya? Welcome back. Sam Young is on a mission to find and confront the creature that killed his brother, Zac. He's joined a research team catching and tagging Australia's tiger sharks. The hope? That one day, you'll be able to use a simple, digital device to test whether your favourite beach is free from sharks. DRAMATIC MUSIC The Australian wet season was serving up the Americans their biggest test yet. The conditions are the most brutal we're had on any expedition. Bad weather has forced the expedition to the far north of Queensland. These are some of the conditions these guys are dealing with on this particular trip. We're got high winds. We've got a massive swell, but below us right now, hundreds of tiger sharks, some of which these guys need to tag. But hooking up in the middle of a storm is near impossible. The outlook is the swell is building. It's getting worse. DRAMATIC MUSIC Two days later, we reach Opal Reef, 40km off Cairns. We're in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef. This operation is costing more than $50,000 a day, and the past three days of fishing has turned up nothing. Then, during our last few hours on the boat, they get a bite. He just ate it. He just ate it. We're hooked up. DRAMATIC MUSIC Yeah, we got it. We got it. A big bite. We got a good angle over here. Pull that weight in. Up! Up! Up! DRAMATIC MUSIC They carefully wrangle her on to the platform. A 3.6m female tiger shark. DRAMATIC MUSIC CONTINUES She is the biggest tiger shark of the mission so far, and out of the water, she is still a force to be reckoned with. Ooh! What do you think of this animal right here ` right in front of us? Look at this thing ` it's huge. DRAMATIC MUSIC Seeing them up out of the water like that is just, uh` it gives you an idea ` a real understanding, huh? Look at those teeth, would ya? That is an enormous animal, huh? Trying to get a look at it. Trying to get a look at it. Just the width of its head, eh? Why don't we go and have a look? You may wanna keep this. It's up to you, but... The hook that came out of the shark. That's for you. The hook that came out of the shark. That's for you. Awesome. Thank you. What's it like to be so close to this animal? What's it like to be so close to this animal? It's just mind-blowing, eh. First time I've been with a shark this big, and... look at the size of it. It's huge. Beautiful. Do you think about your brother in moments like this? Yeah, I do. I mean, it paints a clearer picture to me that, you know, it was a 3m tiger shark that killed my brother and seeing it here today ` a very similar shark ` no wonder it did the damage it did. Yeah. There's the eye of the tiger shark. Right, so see how she just looked at you? Yeah. Yeah. Can you see how she just looked at him? See, they can really see you. So she's very responsive. That means she's very healthy. Chris wants to give Sam the honour of naming this shark. I thought, since, you know, we're grateful for the time you spent with us, we'd love to give you the privilege of naming this beautiful female tiger shark. Yeah, I mean, it'd be really cool to call it Zachariah, if you guys were OK with that. I'm fine with it, man. It's your shark to name. Yeah, that'd` that'd be pretty special to me, to be honest with you. For Sam, it doesn't matter that it's a giant female carrying his brother's name. What's important is that Zachariah's movements will help our scientists better understand the movement of all tiger sharks. Do you think what he's doing could stop what happened to your brother happening again? I think it definitely could be helpful. Um, you know, with tracking the sharks, at least you're gonna learn their movements and potentially, in the future, we might even get a bit more on the sharks when we know they're in an area. So I think it's definitely a step in the right direction to helping stopping another situation like Zac went through. There she goes. Good luck, old girl. There she goes! Zachariah. Nice job, buddy. Nice job. DRAMATIC MUSIC DRAMATIC MUSIC CONTINUES Imagine it. Now, you can find out more about the work Osearch has done and track sharks through their website ` Now, imagine there were parts of your life everyone was keeping secret from you ` where you were born, your father, even your name. For 20 years, Samantha had no idea she was at the centre of one of our longest-running kidnap cases. The perpetrator? Her mother. Can you believe this happened to you? Um,... no. No, I really can't. Samantha Geldenhuys is on a journey to discover what might have been. I don't know what to do, cos they're both on both sides. I'm not getting... (CHUCKLES) The 21-year-old Queenslander has only recently learnt she was born here in Charleston, South Carolina and that just about all she'd known to be true about her life was a lie. I was asking these bizarre questions, and, you know, I couldn't fathom what was going on. Sam has discovered she was at the centre of an international mystery that had puzzled American authorities for two decades. Oh, kiss, kiss. (CHUCKLES) DRAMATIC MUSIC Her disappearance is clouded with intrigue. Sam's mum, Alex, was actually Dorothy Lee Barnett, and she was her daughter's kidnapper. WOMAN: Pretty. She is so pretty. WOMAN: Pretty. She is so pretty. Mummy. I still don't know how all of that really happened. Samantha. Oh, nice glasses. That incredible story is next week. And that's our show for tonight. Do join us on Facebook and Twitter. Thanks for joining us. Have a great night. We will see you next week.
