1 Welcome to a very special Fair Go. Tonight it's the Kids Ad Awards, so we've decided to go all out. What better way than have a party here at Rainbow's End? Whoa! We're gonna have some fun and give away $25,000 in prizes. There's even a bit of history being made in one of the categories. And just to prove we're big kids at heart, the Fair Go team does its take on catching that pesky penguin. WHIMSICAL MUSIC Um... So let's get straight into it. The Fair Go team's had close to 400 entries to view this year, and from there we selected our finalists. Let's have a look at the intermediate and primary category. Remember, the ad could be anything you like, as long as it featured an animal of any description. Here's Mark. Welcome to the judging of the Fair Go School Ad Awards, coming to you from the exclusive Seafarers Club in Auckland. We've rolled out the red carpet this year. Get out, ya mongrel! There you go. 1960S CAPER MUSIC And here come the judges. Pip Mayne from FCB, one of NZ's top ad agencies. They made the Piggy Sue ad for Vodafone. (OINKS) And Tammy Davis. You might know him as Munter from Outrageous Fortune, but he's also a flash-as movie director who made this. Our judging criteria this year is animals. What do you know about animals? Um, I've been to the zoo before. (ROARS) Perfect. I love animals. I absolutely adore them. First up, primary and intermediate schools. We've picked 10. The judges have to choose their top three. It's not going to be easy. # Love is all around me. # Ah, Specsavers, you've inspired a generation. Ew, yuck! ALL: Should've gone to Specsavers! Great use of dog and sheep. 'THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY' THEME MUSIC M&M's. Can't resist 'em. BOTH LAUGH The family dog got a good run this year. SENTIMENTAL MUSIC Does your dog stink? Are they feeling a bit 'ruff'? Try new Dexona for dogs. # No one to talk with, # all by myself. Well, you do wonder what goes on when you leave the house. # ...but I'm happy. # BAHA MEN'S 'WHO LET THE DOGS OUT?' CHEERING SIREN WAILS No humans were harmed in the making of this ad ` hopefully. Bugger. BOTH LAUGH 'MISSION IMPOSSIBLE' THEME So who said cats are the hardest to train? Not Rat Cat. Call... READS: Occasionally Eduardo was not very nice to animals and would chase the cat. READS: It is natural for dogs to chase things that move. Wow, great message, great ad. I told you it was going to be tough for the judges. Well done, guys. Awesome this year, though, guys. Seriously this is` because I've been doing this for a couple of years now, this is definitely, for me, the best year. Oh, I think they're amazing, and Pip's done it all before, so I'm kinda taking, you know` Doing as you're told. Yeah. (LAUGHS) But, um, no, they've done a really good job. It's amazing. You know, it's good for them to be working with animals. They've watched the finalists. Now the judges have to pick the top three and a winner. Ooh. Sheesh, it's tough. Isn't it tough? Isn't it tough? It's so tough. Well, we didn't say it would be easy, but here's the top three, in no particular order. Instead of Glad Wrap, you can use my reusable sandwich wrap. My friend Zeek will demonstrate how easy it really is to use it. UPLIFTING MUSIC See? If a dog can do it, so can you. I think you deserve a treat, boy. Let's go for a walk. I've seen that as a YouTube thing, which people have been doing. Yeah, yeah. But I just love a Labrador and food, cos they have no off switch. So I really engaged with that, cos I love` I think that, as a concept, is really nice. Every day I wake up to metal bars pressed against my face. I live in fear of what is to come. My day consists of laying, eating and sleeping, all the while cramped in a small, cold cage with six or seven others. I can't do anything to escape. Oh, how I'd die for a day in the sun. POIGNANT MUSIC Oh, give me goosebumps. Mm. I mean, it's not fun, but it's a great message that they got across, incredibly powerfully. Yeah. And very very simply visually, and I like that. Kia ora. At Stoke School Farms, we take school-range eggs seriously. Not only do the chickens run freely, they get an 'eggucation'. PEN SCRATCHES PAPER READS: Eggs hatched into hungry, noisy baby birds. Eggna, catch. BAND PLAYS SLOW TEMPO MUSIC The chicken's eggucation is the secret to our eggs. Free-range and school-range, the choice is easy. Get yours today, only from Stoke School's farm. I love 'eggucation'. It's very funny. Easy. Where did they find that big egg from, do you think? The big egg? Well, that's a kiwi egg. (LAUGHS) No, it's not a kiwi egg. LAUGHTER It's an emu egg. Must be an ostrich egg. An ostrich egg. > An ostrich egg. And in the end, they earned their popcorn. Done. Yeah? We're agreeing. Boom. Fantastic. So those are our three finalists. What a great bunch of ads. We'll surprise this year's winner very soon. And a huge congratulations to our other finalists... And we hope you guys have another go next year. By now, you will know this cute animal commercial. I would say... Stop, penguin! Naughty penguin! Penguins can't ride bikes. Yes, the Tower commercials received a lot of votes for next week's Best and Worst Ad Awards show ` not going to tell you which category. But which category would a Fair Go remake feature in? That was a penguin holding my bike. I wasn't expecting that. WHIMSICAL MUSIC The full version later. And soon we take our junior winners by surprise. There's a great bunch of ads from our secondary category. And we reckon we've found an animated ad that will leave you speechless and a wee bit teary. # I've felt the branches of it looking at me. # Is this the place we used to lie? # Is this the place that I've been dreaming of? # 1 How long until you're mortgage-free? Shredding years and thousands of dollars off your mortgage starts with a great rate ` just 4.39%. BNZ ` be good with money. 1 Welcome back to the Fair Go Kids Ad Awards. This year, we're pulling out all the stops and coming to you from Rainbow's End. And time now to surprise the winner of the best ad for primary and intermediate schools. WHISPERS: 'We're at Glen Eden Intermediate School in Auckland. 'I'm whispering because we're actually hiding in the control room of the video production class. 'Now, look, this is a live feed. You can see the kids here. 'They've just gathered. They think they're showing their ads to the new principal. 'These girls here, these are our winners, 'and we're just about to go and surprise them.' Here goes. Hi, guys. I'm Pippa. I am from Fair Go. And guess what? You girls are actually our winners this year. GIRLS EXCLAIM 'I doubt these girls are lost for words often. 'And certainly when it comes to the decision to focus on battery farming, 'there's no shortage of talk.' We watched all of these videos, and it's pretty horrific. The main idea was kind of, like, if humans were animals and animals were humans, and how, like, we would feel if it was happening to us. So who was in the cage? > Us three. (CHUCKLES) Yeah. So how long did you have to sit in there for? > Um... Like, 10 minutes. And we were, like, hoping that we'd, like, spread the word about stopping battery farming. POIGNANT MUSIC I am very proud of them. They all have done an amazing job. Very creative children. Very switched on. They know what they're doing. Who knows where they'll be in the future? Well, a career in film or TV is definitely on the cards, and they're off to a good start. What you did was amazing. You know, the whole story, the concept. Yeah, thanks for being socially minded and for actually making this about them and not just about yourselves. I think it was just absolutely fantastic. And it was a very powerful piece of communication, and I got little goose bumps ` or chicken bumps, I suppose I should call them, since that's what it was about. But well done. We hope you enjoy your prize. Awesome. See you, guys. West side! GIRLS LAUGH So the coveted trophy is firmly in the hands of these proud winners, and that's not all they're claiming. Glen Eden Intermediate gets two Canon EOS 100D cameras, a bunch of cool accessories, a Canon Pixma printer, $7000 worth of smartboard equipment and $2000. And it gets better. Just wondering if you all wanted to come with me... and hang out at Rainbow's End? EXCLAIMING, LAUGHTER Yes! Oh my God! Yes! And here they are having a great time. CHILDREN CHEER In second place, Stoke School in sunny Nelson. You receive the latest Canon video camera and 500 in cash. And in third place, it's Russell Street School in Palmerston North. You also win the latest Canon video camera. Right, now to the secondary entries. Remember, the ad could be about anything at all, as long as it featured an animal. Here's Mark again. Three` Shh! Shh! You two, I'm not going to tell you again. Sorry. Sorry. Now we're on to the secondary schools. The brief was again ` just to remind you ` animals. We've picked 10. It's up to you two to pick your top three. Go for it. Dog and dad dating? Let's get going. # Cos it's the only thing I wanna do. # An early entrant for the best-dressed pooch. She shops online, works online and finds dates online. # And they called it puppy love... # But losing connection can be the end of the world. We love it when the guy gets the girl. CHEERFUL MUSIC Or does he? CHEERFUL MUSIC CONTINUES Pawsitively Purrfect. DOORBELL RINGS SEXY MUSIC (SCREAMS) # I'm Mr Lonely. # # Love was made for me and you. # WOMEN SCREAM Well, it's not every day the mouse gets the girl. This is a new look for the Southern man. You become masculine, responsible, romantic, stylish. But more importantly, you gain an amazing sense of smell. Ruff body spray. THE TRASHMEN'S "SURFIN' BIRD" Not sure what's going on here, but it's hard to forget. Hey, man. DRAMATIC MUSIC I feel no pain! SHRIEKING THE TRASHMEN'S "SURFIN' BIRD" Panadol. Feel no pain. LAUGHTER What was that? Seriously! What was that? WHIMSICAL MUSIC And this one is just plain cute. DRAMATIC MUSIC (INHALES DEEPLY) WHIMSICAL MUSIC Real food for real dogs. OK, so lets work out your top three. OK, let us just quickly confab this. OK. OK. Yes. Yes. Um... And here they are, in no particular order ` the top three. # I'm a whio duck. # And I'd like to tell you some pretty cool stuff about how we can keep didymo at bay. # We want that rock snot to stay away. # And how we do that? By working together every time we go on a fresh-water venture. # Check, clean, dry is the way to go. # When you're crossing through the rivers, bro. CHEERFUL UKULELE MUSIC Claymation is incredibly difficult to do. It takes a lot of patience, and it takes a lot of skill. And, of course, they created their own soundtrack and the girl sang along, which I thought was lovely. Yeah, yeah. BIRD SONG INTENSE ROCK MUSIC RHYTHMIC PANTING RHYTHMIC CHANTING You know, the editing, the sound, everything just kind of came together. You know, I mean you could see an All Black with it, you know. Yeah. HUHA is a non-profit animal shelter. Our focus is educating and encouraging our community to take in animals. We rely on your donations to help keep our no-kill shelter going. But it is a temporary solution. What we really need is for these animals to be adopted and taken into your loving homes. Yeah, that was almost like a documentary format. The standard's just exceptional. It's so good what these kids have actually gone off and thought about and done. I thought they were a few that, actually, you know, if you screened them on TV tomorrow, no one would know that, you know, they were made by kids. So there are our three secondary finalists. And huge congratulations to the others to the others who made our shortlist. St Kentigern College with 'Puppy Love', And James Hargest College, Invercargill. Up next ` ` history is made when we reveal our secondary winner. BOTH SCREAM (LAUGHS) Welcome back to Fair Go, coming to you from Rainbow's End. Time now to announce the winner of the secondary schools category. (LAUGHS) So I'm in Auckland, but don't go making guesses about which school has won this year, because this year, it isn't a school. That's right. For the first time in Fair Go's Kids Ad Awards history, our winner is homeschooled. She's about to arrive here at TVNZ, so I'm going to make myself scarce. So this is Sarah Ridsdale. She's come up from Palmerston North with her family. She thinks all the top-10 schools are here. We don't have that kind of budget. And she's about to find out she is in fact our winner. We've lied to you, I'm afraid. (LAUGHS) You're not in the top 10. Well, you are in the top 10, but you're actually also our winner. Oh wow! LAUGHTER Congratulations. Thank you. Oh, that's awesome. (LAUGHS) It's fair to say Sarah's a bit blown away, as were the judges when they saw her ad, which was inspired by a visit Sarah had with a DOC ranger to the Tongariro National Park. CHEERFUL UKULELE MUSIC # So my name whenua. I'm a whio duck. # And I'd like to tell you some pretty cool stuff. # We were quite blown away that it was just you on your own doing this. Yeah. You have an incredible talent. I used to go there as a kid and stuff, used to swim in all the rivers around there. And your concept is just absolutely amazing. Sarah even wrote and performed the rap herself, with sister Nadia on the ukulele. Nadia, along with Mum and Dad, has had to keep quiet about Sarah's win. I guess I thought of it more as planning a surprise rather than keeping a secret,... (LAUGHS) and that made it better. Yeah, and Janet's far better at stringing a story along than I am. Oh, that sounds terrible! So I just kept on avoiding it and walking in the other direction. Now the secret's out, we thought we'd give Sarah a tour of TVNZ. You know, everyone's looking busy. They knew you were coming. LAUGHTER So they were like, 'Let's act busy.' Ready? ALL: Whoo! Then because Sarah's passionate about animation, we thought why not pop along to see some talented people making a living out of it? This is the team behind the Valspar paint commercial,... What do you think? Yeah. No, good. Be honest. Nice. Kev, honesty. I` I like it. (INHALES, SIGHS) What? What's wrong? (SIGHS HEAVILY) You've changed your mind, haven't you? ...who had some tricks of the trade for Sarah. Grab your phone. Grab anything you can record with. Go walk out the door and` and record outside, and just put it really quietly underneath the, uh` the whole commercial. And they understand how truly time-consuming this kind of work is. I made these and then did the animation, which is taking a photo and moving it a little bit, taking a photo. Sarah's 30-second ad started out as a five-minute movie, which she reckons took her around 90 hours to make. Fortunately, she had an understanding teacher. (CHUCKLES) Still gotta get the bookwork done as well, but she definitely knows that there's learning in other things as well, like this. And now she's got some amazing goodies to work with. Sarah and her family win two Canon EOS 100D cameras, a bunch of cool accessories, a Canon Pixma printer, $7000 worth of smartboard equipment and $2000. And yep, you guessed it ` a trip to Rainbow's End. Oh, that sounds awesome. There you go! Thank you. GORDON: Awesome talent. In second place is Kapiti College. You win the latest Canon video camera and $500 cash. And in third place is St Kentigern College with 'Fitbit'. They also win the latest Canon video camera. Overall, this year's prize package is worth nearly $25,000 ` our biggest ever ` so thank you, Canon. And as promised, here's how one British as was brought to life with the art of animation. BIRDSONG KEANE'S 'SOMEWHERE ONLY WE KNOW' # I walked across # an empty land. # I knew the pathway like the back of my hand. # I felt the earth # beneath my feet, # sat by the river and it made me complete. # Oh, simple thing # where have you gone? # I'm getting tired and I need someone to rely on. # I came across a fallen tree. # I felt the branches of it looking at me. # Is this the place # we used to love? # Is this the place that I've been dreaming of? # Oh, simple thing, # where have you gone? # I'm getting tired and I need someone to rely on. # And if you have a minute, # why don't we go # talk about it # somewhere only we know? # Cos this could be the end of everything. # So why don't we go # somewhere only we know? # Well, that's the show. (LAUGHS) So much fun. Thanks you so much to all the schools who entered this year, and thanks to Rainbow's End for hosting us. Yeah, we've had an absolute ball. SCREAMING Next week it's the Fair Go Best and Worst Ad Awards for 2015. Yes, who will be the best of the best? And who will be the worst? And we get our indepen-dance on. UPBEAT MUSIC The fun doesn't stop there. As promised earlier, here's our take on the Tower penguin commercial. Until next week, goodnight. Goodnight. If a penguin stole my bike, I would say... Stop, penguin. Naughty penguin. Penguins can't ride bikes. They walk like this. There's no penguins around here. Penguins live in 'Antarc-ria'. The Antarctica. WHIMSICAL MUSIC Um... My bike just got stolen. That was a penguin ` holding my bike. I wasn't expecting that. WHIMSICAL MUSIC CONTINUES It's just a bike, you know? You can't even ride that anyway. I would just go after it. And pull it off my bike. I'd just get another one. Take that, penguin. Boom! ALL CHATTER EXCITEDLY Copyright Able 2015
