FROM THE NATIONAL FOUNDATION FOR THE DEAF. CAPTIONS WERE MADE POSSIBLE WITH FUNDING FROM THE NATIONAL FOUNDATION FOR THE DEAF. TEXT GOLD TO 4847 TO MAKE A $3 DONATION TO THE CAUSE. COPYRIGHT ABLE 2016 We are outdoors at the Olympic shooting centre. We are preparing for the first shot gun event at the real Olympics. This is the gold-medal match. Catherine Skinner of Australia and Natalie Rooney of NZ. A miss straight away from the Australian. 19-year-old Natalie Rooney from Timaru in NZ. Hopefully she gets off to a better start. She did well. Rooney was very focused on getting to Rio. She thought she was going to London but then she wasn't. She took it as an incentive. She is guaranteed at least a silver. Rooney is an accountant by profession. She is keeping her concentration. Skinner has a bit of work to do In this Antipodean gold-medal match. Australia versus NZ. Rivals in so many different sports. Who will get the bragging rights here? Another missed from Skinner. She is feeling the pressure. That is excellent from Rooney. She followed it. Instinctive preparation. Better from Skinner. A broken one coming out from one of the 15 traps In front of the athletes. It is still fairly cloudy. Better from Skinner. There is the first blemish. 5-4 In favour of the woman from the Timaru gun club. Better from Skinner. Had the first ever 1-2 in a World Cup event from Australia a few years ago. Two in a row for Rooney. A little less serene after that shot. Another no target. Some problems with the mechanisms here. The World Cup was here in April. So they had the chance to iron out some issues. There will always be some no target issues. Neck a neck. We know that the United States has her second bronze medal. But who will take gold and who will take silver?? Six targets remain. 7-7. Good start from Skinner. Both of these athletes in theIr first Olympic Games. Trying to make a splash here. High and to the left that shot. And a miss. All of a sudden, Rooney who hit the first five as missed half of the last six. She was on a roll. But she has missed it. It flew very low. The athletes prefer it to the left or right but that one was to the centre. A one-shot advantage for Skinner. She had a chance to get on to parity there. She missed two earlier on. Natalie Rooney. Just the one point between them. Three more shots to go. You cannot predict anything. Skinner with the advantage. If she hits three, she is the Olympic champion. A big Australian shooting contingent here to support the compatriot. People are trying to urge on Rooney as well. Skinner is one shot away from becoming the Olympic champion. Rooney has to score this one. She has. Last shot. 11-10 to Skinner. If she makes the shot, the Australian takes Olympic gold. She has done it! Gold-medal for Catherine Skinner. She will hold her emotions in While Natalie Rooney finishes her shot. She hits but it is academic. You can see what it means to the Australian athlete. Natalie Rooney is congratulating her. Catherine Skinner takes her first Olympic gold in her first Olympics. It was tight wasn't it? Right up to the end. A miss on two shots from Rooney sealed it. What a good gold-medal match that was. Silver goes to NZ. Natalie Rooney. Australian take the gold with Catherine Skinner. Welcome to the Olympic Hockey Center. Here at Deodoro Arena Rio. The Black sticks are setting out on the Olympic campaign. They will play Korea. They are aiming for a place in the quarter-finals here. South Korea are a bit lackadaisical. First shot. The black sticks get the goal trying to force another mistake. Again they pay the ultimate price. Charlotte Harrison does what she does best. That is score goals. It goes to Anita McLaren. A deflection from one of the Nzers. I think it is Flynn. 3-0. That is stunning. That drive into the circle It looks like it would go across the backline. The heat is starting to get to them. Pushed wide. They have scored. NZ will be disappointed. that is fair. They deserve at least one goal. Just 6 minutes to play. Possession given away by NZ. NZ is underway here in Rio 2016 A 4-1 victory. The flag flies high after this one. Welcome to the Olympic hockey stadium. And match between Great Britain and NZ. Both sides looking to return to winning ways after opening day defeat. They will be looking at where they can improve. The goal difference keeps NZ above Great Britain. The hosts are bottom of the table. They get themselves out of a spot of bother. There is a really good work. Great Britain take the lead here. A couple of metres out. Everybody was scrambling And he managed to get his stick to the ball first and force it home. That is the intensity we have seen from the Great Britain side Right from the first whistle. From his knees as well. Shows real presence of mind. We are fortunate to be able to hear the umpires. The was a question the of why and it was that he pushed him. That was accepted. NZ had come back well after conceding the early goal. What a beauty! What a ripper! Stunning goal for NZ. It looks like he was almost on a half volley. This game is level. The aerial pass. Takes it out of the air. From a goalkeeping point of view, It should not get in at the near post. They are just down beneath us. And they seem very animated about what is going on on the field of play. Not too much space for him to work with. The advantage saw NZ through. Hayden Phillips. The 18-year-old from Palmerston North Made his debut only this year. What a time to score a goal! It seen to be going nowhere and then it opens up. What a wonderful shot here. They were already appealing for the penalty corner. What about the youthful exuberance? A couple of opportunities off the bench there. Deflated and arms in the air as Coughlan comes forward. Sometimes you can't help it. Great Britain are trying to put this one home. So many times the Great Britain captain has come to the rescue. The fans are on their feet. The game is tied at 2-2. You wonder that has been costly for NZ's defensive structure. Middleton knew very quickly. Get the ball over to the right. They do not mind grovelling when goals are the reward. Russell. Child penalised. Not much space at all. Only 10 seconds to go. Is there is still time? Child gets It to the top. It is intercepted. That will do it. What a game. What a game. Two sides both waiting for their first win here. It does very little for the change of position. NZ and Great Britain exactly where they were Fourth quarter-final. NZ versus the United States. Are the woman in Black about to face the most thorough examination yet At the Olympic Games. McAllister. Woodman alongside her. Woodman is away. Surely no one will stop here. Portia Woodman gets the first try of the Quarter final. Kayla McAlister and Portia Woodman They are so productive for the women in black. 11 tries between them already. Woodman was the executioner. On the stroke of half-time. It is a score that will settle the nerves. Here is the attempted the conversion from Nathan Wong. NZ have theIr noses in front. TheRe goes Doyle. A little step through. Nathan Wong playing sweeper. The referee may have to take a look at this. Contact was certainly ofF the ball. Let's break up. Breakup. It is a big call in the context of this Olympic tournament. The guilty party is Tyla Nathan Wong. Late tackle. It is 2 minutes in the sin bin. Jessica is back on her feet. Just 3 minutes of this quarter-final remaining. NZ down to 6 women. Gone through the lineout call. Well taken in the centre of the lineout the by Sara Goss. McAllister is a way. The referee has spotted an offside. There is Carlisle. Time running out here for the Americans. Yet to see our first points of the second half. The clock is ticking down On the yellow card. A yellow card which the Americans failed to take advantage of. Brazier again. Looks for Goss. Imperious in the lineout tonight. The goes Brazier again. Americans have to get possession. The next goal will win the contest surely. It is turned over. What a chance for the Americans! Inside again to Carlisle. Desperate defence from NZ. Out to Johnson. Johnson against Brazier. Goss has got herself a turnover. That was brilliant. It might be the moment that wins it. Now they are back to the full seven. Nathan Wong is back on. What a turnover from Sara Goss. She is so experienced. One of just two players to play in all 20 tournaments Since the woman's World Series was launched. Fitzpatrick looking on there. NZ will want to get the ball and get out of play. It is Sara Goss who fires into touch. NZ have hung on. Just how much were they tested? here is Michael Dawson. Very interesting man. He will try on any kayaking there is. He will go to extreme, go adventure and go to many places no man has gone before. He will be concentrating on the slalom. He paddled back home with his kid brother on a plastic kayak. In New Zealand it is all the double Paddle stuff. He pivots beautifully. No penalties so far. His mum was one of the judges four years ago. His mother gave him two penalty points! His father was the coach, and he objected. He didn't think it was a penalty and it went to the video judges. I don't think he has talked to his mother since. Thankfully his mother is not one of the judges in Rio. She will not give him more penalty points. By the looks of it, nor is anybody else. No penalties. 88.91. Second place behind Pedro de Silva. The Kiwi does the business. There are two runs and it is the best of the runs that counts. Mike Dawson from New Zealand, a fabulous first run. 88.91 - job done, he might think. He loves kayaking when ever he is. He is going to Mangola with one of his buddies after this is over. He reached the semifinals four years ago. No New Zealander in this competition had been in the Olympic Games since 1996. Just a little sticky through the 15. Bounces through the wall. Going a little bit adrift. Under two seconds though. Tight through 19. Gets bounced up and down in the washing machine. Not the fastest through there, but he hasn't lost much. The man who won the Oceana Championships of 2015. He is 17th place in Penrith. His time a little bit slower than row number one, but decent enough to put him firmly into the semifinals for sure. PA: This is what make her special. Courtney McGregor from New Zealand on the vault. Most of the double twists have been performing mid to high 14s. She is out of Christchurch New Zealand. Top 20 vault in the Glasgow champs. She was out of the last Olympic Games with a knee injury. Hard to qualify for the voting finals. It is a tough gig. DANCE MUSIC PLAYS Courtney McGregor has been doing her schooling by correspondence. Many journalists work out an alternative way of schooling. CHEERING, APPLAUSE Pike, half off. A 5.6 tariff. Not enough to get her through the finals maybe. She seems to feel no pressure. 14.4 in the second vault. Courtney McGregor of New Zealand is getting ready for uneven bars. DRAMATIC MUSIC PLAYS she gets the pirhouette away early. She has done a nice job with it. A little lack of amplitude on the release. Now they have 5000. The school for McGregor on the uneven bars. PA: Courtney McGregor from New Zealand! New Zealand's Courtney McGregor again. CROWD CHEERS CLASSICAL MUSIC PLAYS first line, leaned back out in pike position. Harder piked than tucked. At half front layout. Nicely done. CHEERING, APPLAUSE working to a Phantom of the Opera mix. Concluding with a double tuck, is her last tumbling line. The crowd enjoyed it, Courtney McGregor's floor performance. Almost at the heats for the world's fastest swimmers. Russia and Malaysia, Hungary, NZ... Stanley of New Zealand in lane 7. He didn't get off to a good start as he readjusted his head position. Stanley to the left of your screen. Argentina and Hungary come to the wall. Elkamash is out there. Close to the leader on the field. We are seeing a lot of leaders from outside the lanes in this competition. Argentina. Down at the bottom here, Elkamarch. Going to the right-hand lane, breathing to the left-hand side. Lots of swimmers get told to breathe by literally. Grabich is first. A big change in the lead in that last 50 m. The race for home. Italy isn't far behind. Concentrating on the leaders. We can see Stanley and Elkamach. It will be a close finish. Some of those finishes when great. Felix from Austria! He is happy with that. He got his hand on the wall first. There were six competitors that only had 0.5 of a second separating them. The fact that he was beer and the number one position gives him a better chance than the five other guys in this hate. Correction: heat. We still have three heats to go. They should be quick. Biederman is the world recordholder. We do have no sign of the defending champion and a silver medallist of 2012. Only eight girls will make it through. Ledecky is unbeatable, as they say. 400 meter freestyle. This is the final heat. Ledecky traditionally just goes for it. Others try and stay with her. Beautiful technique. So comfortable for her, don't you think? She goes out so quickly. Balmy's technique is so beautiful. Ledecky swim so fast and she swims with a squad of boys. In a lot of cases, she is beating the boys. It is interesting to see how she is changing how everybody is thinking of the 400 and 800m. Coming to the wall, Ledecky is leading. They have had lots of contests over the years. I have just been informed - they can see it on the big screen - they know it has been fast. It is world record pace from Katie Ledecky. Balmy is pulled back. Kapas. Katie Ledecky is starting to sprint. Her feet are right out of the water. CHEERING, APPLAUSE she is the fastest woman on the planet. She is the fastest qualifier and the world recordholder. Just out of her reach, is it? Just out of her reach but an Olympic record. Strong finish for Balmy. A very impressive swim. Just brilliant to watch. 3.58.71. Boyle 4.07 the slowest of the qualifiers is the Australian. To make the final, that is a very good effort. The first of the semifinals of the men's 100 meter backstroke. 100 backstroke. First of the semifinals. The brilliant start from lane four. Ryan Murphy gets in too. The rest are all in a line. It looks as though Xu and Ryan Murphy are there. They turned for the second 50. In lane five, it is Ryan Murphy from the USA. China is on the inside. These two habits at the moment. Rylov and Reid and Maine. Ryan Murphy gets there first. Xu is second. It is a good time. Corey Main and Shane Ryan have not produced a personal bests.
