01 August 2016 Coming up on Te Karere... Maori mourn the loss of a colossus of Maori performing arts, Dr Ngapo Wehi. The Catholic Church has announced a consultation process about the future of Hato Petera College. The first Maori female PhD student in Engineering graduates and she's challenging more Maori women to follow her lead. Due to the live nature of Te Karere, some segments will not be subtitled. Tena koutou katoa, and welcome to Te Karere. Maoridom is mourning the loss of Dr Ngapo Wehi. The 82-year-old from Te Whakatohea, Ngai Tuhoe, Ngapuhi, Ngati Kahu and Te Whanau a Apanui passed early yesterday morning. Ngapo also known as Bub was a colossus of Maori performing arts leading two major Maori haka groups to the national title. Our reporter Irena Smith is at Parihimanihi Marae, Waihirere where Ngapo Wehi is lying in state. We will cross over to her soon. But first, here's a glimpse of his life. We're unable to provide subtitles. Parihimanihi Marae is situated in Waihirere just north of Gisborne. It belongs to the hapu of Ngai Tuketenui and Ngati Wahia of Te Aitanga a Mahaki. And there at the moment is Irena Smith. We're unable to provide subtitles. A country in mourning. An exponent of kapa haka, a man who helped others, and promoted tikanga Maori as well. His journey in kapa haka began with Waihirere. They eventually became champions. Today his team from Tamaki Makaurau, Waka Huia, arrived. They are also champions - but despite his countless wins, he remained humble. His iwi Te Whakatohea and Ngai Tuhoe have also paid their respects here. They happily consented for him to lay here among the greats who tutored him. Ngapo Wehi will remain here until Thursday morning, where the final services will be held for him. King Tuheitia and Ngati Kahungunu will arrive with Mps set to arrive in the days following. With so much kapa haka talent gathered here, there is no doubt that a lot of singing and haka will be on display. Thank you for the coverage, Irena Smith. Is another Maori school facing closure? The Catholic Church has announced a consultation process about the future of Hato Petera College. Some see the announcement as the prelude to closing the North Shore based Maori school, but as Te Okiwa McLean reports, there's a strong groundswell of supporters determined to keep the college open. Things aren't looking great for Hato Petera College. At the beginning of the year the hostel's facilities of the school was closed and now this has happened. The situation has gone from bad to worse. Here's Hato Petera Whanau Trust's reaction to the bishop s statement. The Catholic church says 95% of students must be adherents of the Catholic faith. However, 30 of the current cohort are not members of the church. They must pray, and work together. There will be a hui on August 14 which is open to the whanau and wider community of Hato Petera at the college. Te Okiwa McLean, Te Karere. After the break, Steve Hansen has named his All Black squad for the upcoming Rugby Championship series. Steve Hansen has named his All Black squad for the upcoming Rugby Championship series. In an announcement today, Hansen announced his 23 to take on Australia, South Africa and Argentina. As Tamati Rimene-Sproat reports. Selecting an All Blacks side is never an easy job, but Steve Hansen has named his squad for the upcoming Rugby Championship. The squad is full of our top Maori talent. 10 Maori players have been selected to wear the black jersey. Except for Damian McKenzie who has been left out of this squad Since his head knock three months ago Charlie Ngatai has been side-line bound. Seta Tamnivalu has also been left out and so Hansen has included Sonny Bill in his squad to cover his spot. This squad will assemble in Auckland later this week for their training session. Tamati Rimene-Sproat, Te Karere. So ABs selection today, super rugby finals, Warriors finally win a golden point match - lots of content for our sports pundit to analyse. Tena koe. ABs selection no surprises, Bad luck for Charlie Ngatai, Brad Webber, and Damian McKenzie? We're unable to provide subtitles. Thank you for your time, Tumamao Harawira. After the break; The first Maori female PhD student in Engineering graduates and she's challenging more Maori to challenge stereotypes. And we have the weather. To the weather now. For weather, see tvnz.co.nz. When most of us think of engineering, we think of robots and bridges. We also think of it as a male dominated industry, but Dr Ngaire Hiria Hart is challenging the stereotype on both counts as the first Maori female PhD in engineering whose work focuses on the survival of native bees. Hania Douglas stopped in at her graduation at AUT today. In a room full of men, she was the only woman. Engineers are in high demand here. Ngaire's focus has been on creating systems to save NZ's native bees. Ngaire urges more Maori women to get into engineering for Maoridom's sake. Hania Douglas, Te Karere. That's all we have for today. Kia ora tatou katoa. Captions were made possible with funding from Te Mangai Paho. Copyright TVNZ 2016.
