Coming up on Te Karere... A gang member feeding the homeless in Palmerston North, saying WINZ and Housing NZ need to do more. After being placed into their new state home, this Gisborne family is wanting to move fearing for their lives. Maori Israeli advocates say Marama Davidson may been fed wrong information after attempting to enter Gaza. 11 October 2016 Due to the live nature of Te Karere, some segments will not be subtitled. Tena koutou katoa, and welcome to Te Karere. A Manawatu gang member is criticising Housing New Zealand and WINZ for not acting fast enough to address the housing shortage which is now spilling over into the regions. Te Kaipo Ahuriri and his wife have been feeding homeless people on the streets of Palmerston North for the last four weeks and is in regular contact with those sleeping rough. If one's belly is nourished, that person then has sustenance to survive. Through compassion and donations from the community he's able to feed the homeless. However, he claims that if Housing NZ and WINZ actually helped the homeless, this wouldn't be an issue in the first place. But the Prime Minister says his government is trying to address the housing crisis. Although he's happy to feed the homeless for the time being, getting housing for them is the main priority. This homeless person says, Housing NZ hasn't fulfilled its promises. Mr Ahuriri says although he's had some negative feedback, the majority of the community supports him and he and his wife will continue to feed the homeless of Palmerston North. Eruera Rerekura, Te Karere. A young woman in Gisborne says she fears for hers and her children's safety after being placed in a Housing NZ home that is in a known bad street. But it's the process to getting into the house that has upset her whanau who say WINZ and Housing NZ need to look at the way they are dealing with those who are desperate for housing. Your home is meant to be where you feel safest, but Shanelle Hohepa-Kahuroa feels the exact opposite of that. This mother of two has been living in this Housing NZ home for two months. However during that time she's felt really afraid. Her mother took her to the Ministry of Social Development to help her apply for this home. It was then she came across problems with the processes and systems. Shanelle is happy to have a new home, she contacted Housing NZ to be able to move to another house. The number of people after Housing NZ Homes has increased. The last statistics show that there were currently more than 50 cases on the priority list in Gisborne. Housing NZ says they have a lot of properties which were up for sale but have been put back on the rental list for those in need. The problem for some in the community is the street those properties are located on in Gisborne. There are still a lot of houses that are locked up and are looking quite run down. However for now this mother remains watchful over her home so that nothing bad happens on her. Irena Smith, Te Karere. Marama Davidson has returned from her attempted foray into Gaza to highlight the lack of aid getting through the navy blockade, but a Maori Israeli-advocate says Davison may have been swayed by incorrect rhetoric and encourages people to see the situation through the eyes of the Israeli people. Allegation of the cruelty and inhumanity of Israelis at the Gaza navy blockade are inaccurate. That's according to a Te Arawa who says that despite what is known about the situation there's more than meets the eye. Sheree Trotter has often been a guest of the Israeli people, and she says the blame for crimes against humanity are misplaced. Trotter made comment after Marama Davidson attempted to visit the Gaza blockade via a flotilla recently, but Marama says; According to Sheree, things have gone from bad to worse with the world falling victim to war mongering rhetoric and propaganda. Davidson maintains Hania Douglas, Te Karere. After the break, we talk politics with NZ First's Pita Paraone. And the All Whites are gearing up for tomorrow's game against Team USA in Washington. Now to politics, we are joined by the speaker for NZ First Pita Paraone. Tena koe Pita. We're unable to provide subtitles. Pita Paraone, thank you for your time. To football now and The All Whites are gearing up for tomorrow's game against Team USA in Washington. The match is part of their preparation for the upcoming Fifa World Cup qualifiers, and the team are relishing the opportunity to play quality opposition. Coming off an unlucky 2-1 loss to highly ranked Mexico last week, The All Whites go into this match as heavy underdogs. But our national team, The All Whites, which include five Maori players, are determined to prove they're worthy competition. Tamati Rimene-Sproat has the story. The All Whites are kicking the underdog tag to the side. The All Whites are excited for their game against USA, a team that is ranked 22 on the FIFA rankings, 66 places above our boys from NZ. But The All Whites believe they have the skills and the players to have the edge tomorrow night. And an old successful Captain of the side agrees. Ryan Nelson made a surprise visit to training today, and believes the squad needs to step it up to another level if they are taste success. The Captain believes that, with team work, the team will be able to taste that success. Kick-off is at 8pm in Washington, 1pm here in New Zealand. Tamati Rimene-Sproat, Te Karere. To league now and the Kiwis have taken a blow in the lead up to the first ever international league game in Perth on Saturday. Former captain Simon Mannering has been withdrawn from the side to allow him to recover from a minor knee surgery. Mannering has remained in Auckland to get his body right before re-joining the team in the United Kingdom for the Four Nations series. Young second rower Tohu Harris said it was a huge blow given Mannering's leadership and experience. New head coach David Kidwell is expected to name the starting line up within the next couple of days in his first ever test match at the helm of the team. Three books relating to Ngati Kahungunu were launched at the grand hall in parliament today. One book is a unique treatment of one of the most classic love stories between Rongomaiwahine and Kahungunu. Te Okiwa McLean with the story. A treasure of ancient origins and a precious heirloom. I am very happy as there are no history books for young children. Maxine Hemi of Ngati Kahungunu is the author of all three books: 'When The Bells Ring', Ngarara Huarau , and First Flight . Huia Publishers published the books and to top it off two of the three are both in Te Reo and English.
