Coming up on Te Karere... What will the new mayor of Auckland achieve for Maori? The question came up at his first official meeting with Ngati Whatua. A public memorial service for the former president of the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions was held today. The All Blacks are gearing up for Chicago, USA with a new look. 28 October 2016 Due to the live nature of Te Karere, some segments will not be subtitled. Tena koutou katoa, and welcome to Te Karere. Ngati Whatua will put all their support behind the newly elected mayor for Auckland, Phil Goff, and all the members of his committee. The pledge comes today after Goff was welcomed on to Orakei Marae in a formal ceremony along with his newly appointed colleagues to the council office. Peata Melbourne was there. Challenge accepted, Today Phill Goff is here to rekindle his relationship with Ngati Whatua. Goff brought with him a whole new new council for Auckland on to Orakei marae, with their queries on behalf of the iwi as he moves in to his new role as Mayor of Auckland. Goff visited here just 3 months back seeking support for his Mayoral campaign. Ngati Whatua expressing their gratitude for his visit today, and reminding him their marae is the real council headquarters of Auckland. Here is the Ngati Whatua room, Goff today reminding the iwi of his personal ties to the people of Ngati Whatua. Issues impacting Ngati Whatua and many others now rest with the councillors and the mayor, their visions and ambitious goals for Auckland which will come into fruition in the near and far future. Peata Melbourne, Te Karere. Two King Country iwi are at odds over who should have the mandate to settle their Treaty of Waitangi claims. Te Maru o Rereahu Trust wants to negotiate their own claims directly with the crown and doesn't accept being included as a hapu in Ngati Maniapoto's Treaty claims. Eruera Rerekura reports. This spokesperson for Te Maru o Rereahu Trust says the door is open for them to pursue their own Treaty claims with the Crown. However, this Ngati Maniapoto man says his board doesn't want to separate the claims. We haven't sat down together yet with Te Maru o Rereahu to consider that matter. There have been three meetings over the past three months with the Maniapoto Maori Trust Board and Te Maru o Rereahu Trust, and the Maniapoto Maori Trust doesn't want to separate the claims up. Mr Katu says the Minister of Treaty Settlements, Chris Finlayson, wants them to work together with Ngati Maniapoto, but says Te Maru o Rerehau is fine to negotiate its own claims. We don't want to split the wider family up. We're keeping to the wishes of our ancestors' of generations right through to today to keep together as one. But Mr Katu says the Maniapoto Maori Trust Board has already agreed to Te Maru o Rereahu Trust sorting out their own issues with the Crown. We haven't yet carefully sat down together to consider a way forward beyond the claims that the board has and the desire to settle them as one group. The time has been extended until the 4th of November for Ngati Maniapoto and Ngati Rereahu people to decide who should have the mandate to settle their Treaty claims. Eruera Rerekura, Te Karere. In North Dakota, America, riot police have desended on an occupational camp site set up by the Standing Rock Sioux to protest against the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline. Tribal leaders believe that construction would destroy sacred sites and the pipe could contaminate the tribe's water sources. Maori Lawyer Kiritapu Allan is working as legal counsel on site, and she says approx 50 people have been arrested and there's a sense of anxiety in the air. Meanwhile, other reports claim that police were brought in to forcibly remove protesters from private property. A public memorial service for the former president A public memorial service for the former president of the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions, the late Helen Kelly was held today in Wellington. It was significant as it gave the community of trade workers a great opportunity to farewell an iconic leader in her own right. Te Okiwa McLean reports. Michael Fowler Centre was crowded. As the masses gathered to farewell this iconic unionist at a public memorial service. Kelly was at the forefront of a lot of protests fighting against the government for the rights of union workers. And that part of her legacy lives on in these union workers. The sentiments are true. She was a great leader and support to us in our work. She was there to lend us her strength to stand up for ourselves against the big corporations. It is abundantly clear she touched many lives. According to some of her old colleagues she touched, not only union workers lives but the wider country The main question is who will fulfil her position? A staunch woman who fort for the people will be missed, not only by the Council of Trades Unions, but by many. Te Okiwa McLean, Te Karere. The Bay of Plenty's Rotorua Lakes Trust is set to build a new multi-story and eco-friendly building as a new hub for iwi organisations. The Lake Road site over looks Ohinemutu Pa and Lake Rotorua. Trust Chairman Toby Curtis says most iwi are supportive of the new $6mil build. The Trust plans to start the build mid-2017 with the opening expected early 2018. After the break, The All Blacks are off to Chicago for their first test match of the Northern Hemisphere tour where they plan to reveal their new look. The All Blacks are off to Chicago for their first test match of the Northern Hemisphere tour, where they plan to reveal their new look. The squad assembled in Auckland today after a brief four day break and releasing their brand new jersey. Tamati Rimene-Sproat has the story. Sneaking back into the All Blacks, after a three week hiatus. Aaron Smith has just returned to the All Blacks environment with a likely chance of playing in Chicago. The big question, will it be for the Maori or for the All Blacks? For the majority of the team, it's been five days of relaxation. They are excited to get on tour, excited about their new uniform as well. The All Blacks play Ireland next weekend and are gunning for to extend their unbeaten streak to 19 on the trot, and they believe a new jersey won't be affecting that. The team depart tonight with the team being named on Thursday in Chicago. Tamati Rimene-Sproat, Te Karere. Tumamao Harawira is here to talk sports ahead of the weekend.
