Coming up on Te Karere... Gisborne locals voice their concerns over growing P epidemic. Labour call for kaupapa Maori prisons to combat Maori reoffending. And Palmerston North's Te Kura o Manukura achieve 100% pass rates and top their decile ratings in latest NCEA statistics. 17 April 2017 Due to the live nature of Te Karere, some segments will not be subtitled. Tena koutou katoa, and welcome to Te Karere. It's an epidemic. That's how bad P's influence over Gisborne has become. A protest march has been held against its illegal sale. However, the major kaupapa of the march is about protecting children and teenagers from the negative impacts of this serious problem. The Gisborne community making their opposition heard. Trisha Walsh was addicted to the drug it in the past. She says her children encouraged her to stop taking P. She is now a role model for her grandchildren. The main goal is to protect children from the dangers of this drug. P has had a large impact on this community and so people from all parts of the community have come together. While they say that P use is quite secretive, its affects are openly visible on the street. The Mayor says he'd really like Gisborne to receive assistance to help those who have become addicted to get off the drug. And the most important thing is that this initiative is community lead, and is waking up and empowers whanau to deal to this serious problem. Irena Smith, Te Karere. A 22-year-old man has been accused over the death of Pakuranga resident Chozyn Koroheke who died two weeks ago. They have been charged with murder. He handed himself into police in Manukau on Sunday evening. Police have pursued him for quite some time. Two others, a 47-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman, have been charged with being an accessory after the fact of murder. The Labour Party has called for a separate Maori prison system following the release of a Waitangi Tribunal report saying the justice system was failing Maori. Corrections spokesperson Kelvin Davis would push for kaupapa Maori prisons for both Maori and non-Maori. Ripeka Timutimu with this story. Maori make up around 50% of the prison population, and Labour says Maori prisons could lower that number. Maori lawyer Moana Jackson says the government policies are racist. The 'Tu Mai Te Rangi' reports released by the Waitangi Tribunal criticised the Department of Corrections for not addressing Maori reoffending rates. Jackson's weary of their response. The report will now sit with the Department of Corrections, but only time will tell if any solutions will come from it. Ripeka Timutimu, Te Karere. The annual NCEA statistics for last year were released just before the Easter break. Palmerston North's Te Kura o Manukura topped their decile ranking academically, so Te Okiwa McLean travelled there to find out what's their secret to success. A school succeeding in sport and in education. Achieving excellence I n every sphere. Last year, Manukura excelled in NCEA, with a 100% passing rate. Indeed we've established our own standards. The national average doesn't matter as we are well and truly above that. We have achieved with the knowledge that our Maori children can achieve. Students also passed University Entrance with excellence endorsements. Manukura were named as one of the top performing Decile 5 schools in the latest NCEA results. And the principal says failing isn't an option. From what I said before, that was the hope right from the start. For all our children to achieve. Furthermore, they reached their full capacity of 180 students, and the school is begging the MOE to move their location to allow more students in the school. There have been many enquiries for many people who want to enrol into our school. So I am sad we have reached our capacity, so we hope we can move somewhere where we can grow. Durie hopes that they will do it all again this year, so they can keep producing more leaders of tomorrow. Te Okiwa McLean, Te Karere. After the break, the New Zealand sevens team place fifth at the Singapore sevens, disappointing many fans. And Tumamao Harawira joins me in studio to talk sports. To sport now and the New Zealand sevens team have bowed out of the Singapore sevens after falling short to Canada 26-14 in the quarter finals. This leaves the New Zealand sevens team without a tournament win this year and pressure is mounting on both the coach and the players. Tamati Rimene-Sproat reports. Underserving of the black uniform. It's been an aspect of the team's play that has plagued the over the last eight competitions. It's no wonder Scott Waldrom is getting frustrated. Following this loss, the NZ All Black Sevens are sitting fourth behind England, Fiji and South Africa. They haven't won a competition this year. They will now look to France, a competition they haven't won since 2004. Paris kicks off on May 13. Tamati Rimene-Sproat, Te Karere. To boxing and an English promoter has backed Joseph Parker for his upcoming bout against Hughie Fury in the hope that it will lead to a title unification bout with his fighter, Anthony Joshua. Parker is currently preparing for his WBO belt defence against Fury and Eddie Hearn has been hoping that a Parker victory will allow Joshua to fight Parker for the IBF, WBC and ABO belts. The two will fight May 6 at Vector Arena. To the UFC now, a Maori fighter has caused a massive upset and given himself a chance at a possible championship fight. Robert Whittaker was born in NZ but raised in Australia. He sent a jolt through the middleweight division by stopping third-ranked Ronaldo Souza with a barrage of punches in the second round at UFC Kansas City. Current middleweight champion Michael Bisping is locked into a title defence against Georges St Pierre at a date still to be determined, which means a title shot may not be imminently forthcoming. Tumamao Harawira is here to talk sports. We're unable to provide subtitles. Tumamao Harawira, thank you. Let's take another look at today's top stories. The Labour Party has called for a separate Maori prison system. Palmerston North school Te Kura o Manukura achieve a 100% pass rate and are heads and shoulders above other schools. After the break, And we have the weather. 1 It's not OK to say she was asking for it. It's not OK to punch a hole in a wall to show your family who's boss. Or think you can demand their love and respect. And it's not OK to look the other way and say it's not our problem. Because it is our problem. And it's not OK. Ever. But it is OK to ask for help. To the weather now. For weather, see tvnz.co.nz. The final day of Hui Aranga was held in Tauranga today. The hui brings together Maori Cathlolics to worship Jesus Christ. Hui Aranga is a regular event that has been held throughout the North Island over many years. Besides worship, there are also competitions both on field and on stage as well.
