And a kura in Manurewa welcome budget announcement to build new school. 02 June 2017 Due to the live nature of Te Karere, some segments will not be subtitled. Tena koutou katoa, and welcome to Te Karere. The government's making it easier for people to get access to medical cannabis. Associate Health Minister Peter Dunne is allowing products with the ingredient cannabidiol to be prescribed by a doctor. Ripeka Timutimu spoke to Dr Huhana Hickey who has been campaigning hard for the drug to be legalised for medical use. Dr Huhana Hickey says that Tilray, this medicinal cannabis product, has given her back her life. And now she hopes it could help others. Associate Minister of Health Peter Dunne announced the removal of restrictions around cannabidiol, or CBD, in line with international developments. The changes will mean easier access to the drugs, but Hickey says it's not as easy as it seems. Dunne says people may be able to access Pharmac funding for cannibis based products. Ripeka Timutimu, Te Karere. New Zealand's Arts and Crafts Institute Te Puia is now on a pathway to be returned to local iwi in Rotorua. Maori Development Minister Te Ururoa Flavell along with the Whakarewarewa Joint Trust initialled a vesting agreement that will ultimately transfer ownership to the iwi. Our reporter Eruera Rerekura was there. The agreement has been signed and the parties are now on a pathway forward. It started in 2007. The iwi have been waiting for a long time to have the land returned into their hands, why? To be of benefit to them firstly and secondly because the land belongs to them - this is the main purpose. He says although there were some robust debates, now the pathway forward is open. Because of the developments over the years, the asset will be returned to iwi in mint condition. The Minister acknowledges the Tourism Minister If Ngati Whakaue and Wahiao-Tuhourangi endorse it, in seven weeks' time an official Vesting Agreement will be signed. Eruera Rerekura, Te Karere. Close to a quarter of a billion dollars has just been announced by the government to refurbish and build new schools throughout the country. One of the beneficiaries of the new funding is Te Wharekura o Manurewa which has been operating in sub-standard facilities for around 15 years. Te Okiwa McLean reports. A long term dream has been fulfilled. The children are happy, the families and the board are also happy. Especially as the wharekura has joined the kura. This is currently where Te Wharekura o Manurewa stands. This has sheltered them for the last 15 years. Nathan says there have been many challenges. When we started using this building, it wasn't new it was old. Also the grounds aren't big for playing and activities as well as the size for the amount of students we have as well. We can only have maybe 35 40 students. But if we were to get more, they would all be sitting on one another. Despite the challenges, they persevered through the tough time. Our students have been successful regarding their results for NCEA levels one, two and three as well as getting into universities with UE. $240 million investment in Auckland school property under Budget 2017, and $24 million for a new kura in Manurewa, to house Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Manurewa and Te Wharekura o Manurewa. Furthermore, the students of the school are thrilled with excitement. I can't fully express my emotions at this decision. It's good for our school and we have gone down a long road to achieve this. I wasn't here when this wharekura started. But I am part of its foundation as a pillar or its health. The school is moving to Browns Road which is about 2km away from the current location of the school. There are heaps their new location will open in the next two years. Te Okiwa McLean, Te Karere.
