IT'S MIDDAY. SHE LIED ABOUT WHERE SHE LIVED SO SHE COULD VOTE FOR A FRIEND. WE'RE LIVE AS METIRIA TUREI SPEAKS ABOUT THE LATEST FRAUD REVELATIONS. WE LOOK BACK ON THE LIFE OF A MUCH-LOVED BRITISH ACTOR. AND HE'S BACK ` SBW GETS A REPRIEVE OVER THAT RED CARD. NGA MANAAKITANGA O TE WA KI A KOUTOU KATOA. GREEN PARTY CO-LEADER METIRIA TUREI'S EXPECTED TO SPEAK ANY MOMENT FOLLOWING THE REVELATION SHE LIED ABOUT HER ADDRESS SO SHE COULD VOTE FOR A FRIEND STANDING IN A DIFFERENT ELECTORATE. OUR POLITICAL EDITOR CORIN DANN IS AT PARLIAMENT. CORIN, IS METIRIA TUREI LIKELY TO RESIGN? It's certainly possible. There have been calls for her to resign after the admission yesterday That along with the benefit fraud committed she also collected electoral fraud. There is huge pressure on her to stand down. I'm not sure that is what she is going to do. One option is that she might not put herself forward as a minister In a future labour, Greens government. Labour will hold their own press conference at 1 p.M. This afternoon. That's been delayed slightly because of the Greens press conference. That's to release details around the new slogan. But it will be critical for Jacinda Ardern. Once the revelations came out it moved the Metiria Turei story into a new realm. It's made it difficult for Jacinda Ardern as a potential future Prime Minister to include Metiria Turei In a cabinet. One way around that is for Metiria Turei to say I would put myself forward as a minister. But we don't know that for sure. She may also be stepping down Or she may be trying to tough this out. But they will be difficult for her and her party. The people who have bacteria over the last few weeks following her benefit fraud admission Are not likely to abandon her. She is a politician who finally understood how they feel in many cases About the difficulties for people on benefits. It is a tough one for the Greens and they would be worrying over this in the last few hours. We don't know what Metiria Turei will say. If she resigns, Can the Greens find a new coleader? Of course they can. There are a few options. Marama Davidson has been moving up the list steadily over the last few years. Julie-Ann Genter As another who would be in contention for that. They would look to fill that position with another female that is how they like to do it. It would throw the party into some turmoil to have to do that And that would be disruptive. I'm not sure that she will stand down today. I think they may try to come to a compromise on this. Whatever happens, it has been an incredible week in politics. NATIONAL'S SET TO ANNOUNCE DETAILS OF HOW IT PLANS TO FIX AUCKLAND'S CRIPPLING TRAFFIC WOES. THE GOVERNMENT IS SETTING ASIDE $2.6B. IT'S BEEN REPORTED A PASSENGER TRIED TO CHECK IN LUGGAGE CARRYING THE DEVICE AT SYDNEY AIRPORT BUT WAS UNABLE TO DO SO AS THE BAG WAS TOO HEAVY. ANOTHER MAN IN CUSTODY IS YET TO BE CHARGED. ONE MAN HAS ALREADY BEEN RELEASED. Let's listen to the press conference. I will not be resigning as coleader of the Green Party or as a member of Parliament. What I want to announce today is that I will not be seeking a ministerial position In a new Labour-Green government. That's because I have been building a movement For compassionate welfare And for ending poverty in New Zealand. And I have been doing at work now for more than 20 years, And 15 years as a member of Parliament with the Greens. That work is more importantThan any one person. Change is coming, And I am proud to be part of leading that change At the selection. But it is true that change always comes at a price, And I knew that when I first told my story, And today that price has been paid. I told my story, And talked about my past, And it has been subject to intense scrutiny. I opened myself to this Because I want New Zealanders to understand What it is like to live as a beneficiary in this country, What it is like to live in poverty And what it is like to live with the discrimination and scrutiny That comes with being a beneficiary. And I will continue to work For as long as I can For a compassionate welfare system That treats all people in this country with dignity and respect. I will continue to work to end poverty in this country. Kia ora koutou. Man: did you consider resigning? I considered it, but I will not. This work is more than just one person. I have been proud to have led theChange for the welfare system. I have had a huge number of messages in the last 24 hours Of people saying please don't go because we need someone to speak for us on these issues. And I take that responsibility very very seriously. I never asked for her to resign and I support her as coleader. They did not ask me to step aside from the ministerial position But it is important to respect their concerns Which is why I am taking of step that I am. They have expressed concerns with me and with us, But I am offering this Because I understand their position. Why are you not seeking a ministerial role? If nothing is wrong with it why are you not seeking a ministerial role? The nature of politics means when things go wrong You sometimes have to pay a price for that and I recognise that. The work is more important than a ministerial position. The point of telling my story was to open the conversation about poverty and benefits in New Zealand. And I'm still proud of that and that is the work I need to do in the lead up to the election. Do you feel that New Zealanders cannot trust you now? No, but I feel I need to take responsibility for my past. People will want me to do that. This is not... My story is about me, But the issue is not about me. It's genuinely has been, My purpose has been to open this conversation. And if stepping aside from a ministerial post helps to continue that conversation, Because it then focuses on the issue, then that is worth doing. Is this disappointing for you personally? I would very much have liked to have been a minister in the new government. What I most want to do is fix the welfare system And make sure people are treated with dignity and respect And end poverty. That has been my goal for all of my time in Parliament. My personal position is irrelevant compared to that work. Wwhen we were considering Whether I should tell my story, In a situation like this with this kind of scrutiny, you have to tell the whole story. So I did not declare all of my flatmates. I am working with winz on providing information about that. My baby's father was a flatmate prior to my becoming pregnant but I did not live with them after that. It was a full thing to have done at the time but was not something that it was 1993. I genuinely didn't remember that I was registered in that electorate. That is just one of those things that you do some time. So the rollercoaster ride of politics rolls on. Let's bring in our political editor. Metiria Turei is not stepping down as the Greens coleader. But a critical point here Is that she will not seek a ministerial role in a future government And that is critical because I don't think Jacinda Ardern would have been in a position To be able to say that she would give her one Given this latest revelation of electorate fraud On top of benefit fraud, Albeit a minor electorate fraud issue. The issue around Metiria Turei Had got too big and it would have been too hard for Labour In the situation. It seems to have been a compromise reached here. She will stay on as Greens coleader, But she will not be part of any future Labour Greens government In terms of a cabinet position. There are interesting reasons for that. Ministers are held to higher standards than anyone else. They are in control of big portfolios And in terms of the centre-left and its message That it's delivering to the electorate, I don't think Labour would have had much choice Than to rule her out anyway.
