That's the theme for this year's Maori Language Week, which kicks off tomorrow. Today, we're discussing what we can all do to strengthen te reo Maori for ourselves, for our whanau and our communities. I get a little bit shy or a bit worried about that. I guess, how do we create safe spaces for people like me...? (SPEAKS MAORI) Yeah, it's just about nurturing the people that are giving it a go. (SPEAKS MAORI) (SPEAKS MAORI) So creating safe spaces is done in lots of different ways, and outside of the classroom too, I think we need to think about ` how do we nurture our people outside of where they're learning? And, um, like Pipi Ma ` when it launched, it was for tamariki reo Maori. But the feedback that came back was actually from the matua, who said, 'Thank you so much. I have a fun thing that I can use in the privacy of my bedroom 'that no one will see me or laugh at me if I make a mistake, 'and I'll push the button, hear the reo and practise whakahua through tenei tare reo Maori.' (SPEAKS MAORI) But it created a product for a safe space in your own home to give te reo a go and also create dialogue between matua who are trying to learn to speak with their children through the interaction of play. Do you find that difficult in the mahi that you're doing down in Otautahi when you've got people who are a bit afraid to kia whakahua te reo Maori? How do you get around that? In 1999, Ngati Kahungunu artist Hinewehi Mohi stood before a packed crowd at Twickenham Stadium and sung our national anthem in te reo Maori. Little did she know the impact it would have on Aotearoa. 20 years on, Hinewehi is still promoting te reo Maori through music, celebrating Maori Language Week with the launch of a special new album. Waiata Anthems features some of Aotearoa's top artists performing their best known waiata in te reo. Among them are Six60 with a new rendition of 'Don't Forget Your Roots'. It's called Kia Mau Ki To Ukaipo. No matou te whiwhi ` kua riro ma Te Hui te whakapahotanga tuatahi. No reira, kia tahuri ake tatou. We are in the studio to reimagine our popular song 'Don't Forget Your Roots' in Maori. We started our journey with this song, and we've been far and wide and overseas in 10 years, and now we're coming back to it. (MUSIC BUILDS) Tihei mauri ora! (DRUM BEAT BEGINS) # Whoa, whoa, ooh, ae. # Kia mau ki to ukaipo. # Kia mau hoki ki to whanau. # Kia mau ki to ukaipo. (SINGS IN MAORI) I'm very grateful to be able to be a part of this. For our journey, it means a lot, because we've been together for so long, and that's the opportunity come full-circle and reimagine it in Maori... (SINGS IN MAORI) The Maori translation's saying, you can go overseas and all that. You can go away from home, but hold on to it ` the values.
