IT'S MIDDAY. CHRIS HIPKINS MAKES HIS FIRST VISIT TO WAITANGI AS PRIME MINISTER. WE'LL BE LIVE TO DISCUSS HIS TRIP TO THE TREATY GROUNDS. THE DISINTEGRATING HIGHWAY, THE MAIN ROAD TO COROMANDEL CONTINUES TO GIVE WAY. WHAT IT MEANS FOR THE FUTURE OF THE PENINSULA. PLUS, OUR GLACIERS FILMED FOR AMERICAN TV ` WHY THEY'RE INTERESTED IN OUR VANISHING ICE. CAPTIONS BY PHOEBE UPTON AND KATE MCCULLOUGH. CAPTIONS WERE MADE WITH THE SUPPORT OF NZ ON AIR. WWW.ABLE.CO.NZ COPYRIGHT ABLE 2023 PRIME MINISTER CHRIS HIPKINS IS AT WAITANGI THIS MORNING, HIS FIRST VISIT TO THE TREATY GROUNDS AS LEADER. HE'S FACING A BUSY AGENDA. AND FOR MORE ON WHAT HAS BEEN DISCUSSED, AND HOW HE'S SHAPING UP ON THE JOB, WE'RE JOINED BY POLITICAL EDITOR JESSICA MUTCH MCKAY. KIA ORA, JESS, WHAT'S HAPPENING NOW? RIGHT NOW, CHRIS HIPKINS IS MEETING WITH THE IWI CHAIRS. THEY WILL HAVE A LOT TO DISCUSS. IT IS HAPPENING BEHIND CLOSED DOORS THAT THEY CAN HAVE FREE AND FRANK DISCUSSIONS, BUT WE WERE ALLOWED IN FOR THE WELCOME, WHICH WAS VERY WARM, BUT YOU CAN IMAGINE THEY GOT RIGHT DOWN TO BUSINESS, AND THERE WILL BE SOME PRETTY HEATED AND FIRM DISCUSSIONS HAPPENING AT THE MOMENT. IT IS A BALANCING ACT FOR CHRIS HIPKINS, BECAUSE ALTHOUGH IT IS A VERY POPULAR POLICY INSIDE THIS ROOM WHEN HE IS SPEAKING, IT IS NOT A HUGELY POPULAR POLITICAL POLICY WITH PEOPLE OUTSIDE. THERE WILL BE SOME PEOPLE OUTSIDE PUSHING FAMILY FOR THAT. WE SPOKE TO 1 OF THE IWI CHAIRS, AND HE SAYS THERE HAS BEEN A LOT OF MISINFORMATION AROUND FREE WATERS, ONE OF THE HOT POLITICAL TOPICS, AND HE IS URGING THE GOVERNMENT TO PUSH AHEAD AND KEEP GOING WITH IT. CORRECTION: THREE WATERS HE ALSO SAID THE COMMUNICATION AROUND THREE WATERS COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER. HE IS SAD AND DISAPPOINTED THAT NANAIA MAHUTA IS NO LONGER IN CHARGE OF THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT PORTFOLIO, AND SENT SOME CLEAR MESSAGES WHICH YOU CAN BE SURE HE WILL BE ECHOING TO THE PRIME MINISTER INSIDE THAT MEETING. THIS IS WHAT HE HAD TO SAY. THAT'S PROBABLY THE DISAPPOINTING THING FOR THE FORUM, IS THIS MISINFORMATION, OR AGAIN, LEADING INTO AN ELECTION, MAORI ARE BECOMING A POLITICAL FOOTBALL. AND ONE OF THE KEY MESSAGES WE WANT TO GIVE TO THE PRIME MINISTER AND OTHER MINISTERS IS, THEY NEED TO STAND UP, THEY NEED TO STEP UP, AND IT'S UNACCEPTABLE, BECAUSE AGAIN, THE RACIST OR BIASED ATTACKS AT MAORI IN 2023 ARE UNACCEPTABLE. HE WILL BE DOING A LOT OF LISTENING THIS WEEKEND, CHRIS HIPKINS. HOW WILL THINGS PLAY OUT FOR THE REST OF THE WEEKEND? THE BIG POLITICAL DAY WILL BE HERE ON SUNDAY. UP IN THE UPPER TREATY GROUNDS. IT WILL BE THE FIRST TIME CHRIS HIPKINS IS WELCOMED AS PRIME MINISTER, AND A FIRST FOR CHRISTOPHER LUXON ` THE OTHER POLITICAL PARTIES WILL BE INVOLVED IN THAT. ON MONDAY, WE HAVE THE DAWN CEREMONY, WHERE WE PAY TO BUTTE AND REMEMBER OUR NATIONAL DAY. THEY WILL BE A LOT OF POLITICIANS FLOODING IN HERE OVER THE NEXT TWO DAYS, AND A LOT OF MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC. TENA KOE, JESS. QUESTIONS ABOUT THE FUTURE OF LIFE ON THE COROMANDEL PENINSULA ARE BEING RAISED FOLLOWING DEVASTATION TO ITS ROADS FROM SEVERE RAINFALL. THE COUNCIL SAYS THE REGION HAS EXPERIENCED MORE THAN 50 SLIPS IN THE PAST WEEK, LIMITING ACCESS TO THE HOLIDAY DESTINATION. TESSA PARKER HAS MORE. A SUMMER LOCATION USUALLY SWARMED WITH BEACHGOERS AND BOATIES, NOW DAMAGED BY SEVERE WEATHER. WE'VE HAD FOUR WEEKS OF CONSISTENT RAIN AND WEATHER EVENTS. WE'VE HAD ROAD SLIPS ` LITERALLY DOZENS AND DOZENS OF THEM. STATE HIGHWAY 25A'S GAPING HOLE IS WIDENING ALL THE TIME, THIS EROSION CAPTURED MID-MORNING. THE REGION'S LEADERS ARE WORRIED DAMAGE LIKE THIS COULD BECOME A REGULAR OCCURRENCE. BUILDING LONG-TERM RESILIENCE INTO OUR ROADING NETWORK AND INTO OUR COMMUNITIES IS ABSOLUTELY VITAL. IT'S GOING TO BE EXPENSIVE. IT'S GOING TO BE A CONVERSATION THAT WE'VE GOT TO HAVE WITH OUR COMMUNITIES, WITH OUR IWI AND WITH CENTRAL GOVERNMENT. YESTERDAY, AFTER TOURING THE SITE, EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT MINISTER KIERAN MCANULTY ACCEPTS THE NEED TO CHANGE APPROACH. I'VE GOT THEIR THOUGHTS ON WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE AND HOW WE CAN PROVIDE SUPPORT TO LOCAL GOVERNMENT, BUT WE'VE GOT TO GET OUR HEADS AROUND IT THAT THIS IS AN ISSUE THAT ISN'T GOING AWAY AND IT'S NOT GOING TO BE CHEAP. KEY ROADS INTO THE REGION REMAIN CLOSED. THERE'S ALSO DAMAGE TO STATE HIGHWAY 25 ALONG THE EASTERN COASTLINE, SPARKING CONCERNS PEOPLE ARE AT RISK OF BECOMING ISOLATED AND SUPPLIES CUT OFF. IS IT JUSTIFIED TO CONTINUE IN AN AREA WHEN WE KNOW IT'S GOING TO BE PRONE TO CLIMATE CHANGE? THAT IS A BLOODY TOUGH CONVERSATION TO HAVE. IT'S EMOTIVE. PEOPLE GET UPSET. OF COURSE THEY DO. THEY'VE SET UP THEIR LIVES WHERE THEY ARE. EVERYONE LOVES THE COROMANDEL, BUT WE'VE GOT TO MAKE IT A SAFE AND ENJOYABLE PLACE FOR PEOPLE TO VISIT AND TO LIVE. AND FOR THAT TO HAPPEN, CIVIL DEFENCE ADVISES VISITORS STAY AWAY THIS LONG WEEKEND. TESSA PARKER, ONE NEWS. IN GOOD NEWS, ALL SEVERE WEATHER WARNINGS FOR THE NORTH ISLAND HAVE NOW BEEN WITHDRAWN, AFTER A WEEK OF INTENSE RAIN. THE SEVERE WEATHER LEAVES BEHIND A HEFTY CLEAN UP JOB FOR THE MOST AFFECTED REGIONS. ALL AUCKLAND BEACHES ARE CONTAMINATED WITH WASTE WATER AND DEBRIS, SO THEY ARE BEING MARKED AS UNSAFE FOR SWIMMING. THE MOUNTAIN SAFETY COUNCIL IS ALSO ADVISING PEOPLE BE CAREFUL AROUND TREES AND IN THE BUSH. THE WEATHER IS GOING TO BE TEMPTING TO GET OUT THIS WEEKEND AS IT STARTS TO IMPROVE, BUT THE REALITY IS THERE HAS BEEN SO MUCH RAIN IN THE SPACE, NO ONE REALLY KNOWS THE SCALE OF WHAT DAMAGE HAS BEEN DONE, AND THERE IS ALSO THE HIDDEN STUFF, YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO SEE A SLIP THAT IS ABOUT TO HAPPEN ABOVE YOU ON THE TRACK. THERE IS A WHOLE LOT OF UNKNOWN CONTRACTS IN AND AROUND AUCKLAND. CORRECTION: TRACKS THE GOVERNMENT IS PLEDGING AN EXTRA $700,000 TO SUPPORT RAIN-DAMAGED REGIONS. REMOVING PAVEMENT AND PLANTING TREES COULD BE WAYS TO MAKE OUR CITIES MORE RESILIENT, ACCORDING TO ONE URBAN PLANNER. THE SUGGESTION COMES AFTER THE DEVASTATING FLOODS OVERWHELMED LOCAL INFRASTRUCTURE. TIMOTHY WELCH, WHO LECTURES ON DESIGNING BETTER CITIES, SAYS OUR CURRENT SYSTEM NEEDS A REVAMP. ANY CITY WOULD STRUGGLE TO COPE WITH THAT MUCH WATER IN A SINGLE DAY, BUT OUR INFRASTRUCTURE IS REALLY OLD. THE BULK OF OUR STORMWATER WAS BUILT IN THE 1950S, WE UPGRADE HERE AND THERE, BUT THE ENTIRE SYSTEM REALLY NEEDS TO BE RETHOUGHT. HE SAYS CHANGES CAN BE MADE AT HOME, WITH THINGS LIKE GRAVEL DRIVEWAYS AND RAIN BARRELS BEING USED. THE INTERISLANDER'S KAITAKI FERRY RESUMED SERVICE TODAY, ALMOST A WEEK SINCE IT LOST POWER AND LEFT PASSENGERS STRANDED AT SEA FOR HOURS. IT SET SAIL THIS MORNING FROM WELLINGTON, BUT IS ONLY CARRYING FREIGHT. KIWIRAIL SAYS THE VESSEL PROBABLY WON'T BE ABLE TO TAKE PASSENGERS FOR ANOTHER ONE OR TWO WEEKS. ADDITIONAL SAILINGS OF OTHER FERRIES ARE RUNNING TO TRY TO MEET DEMAND. A RENTAL ADVOCATE SAYS THERE'S FEAR AMONGST TENANTS IN AUCKLAND THAT THEIR RENT WILL INCREASE IN THE COMING WEEKS. RENTERS UNITED IS PUBLISHING AN OPEN LETTER TO AUCKLAND MINISTER MICHAEL WOOD, ASKING FOR A TEMPORARY FREEZE ON RENT INCREASES IN THE SUPER CITY. THE GROUP SAYS LANDLORDS ARE LIKELY TO INCREASE RENTS IN AREAS DAMAGED BY THE RECENT FLOODS. THE MESSAGE WE ARE SENDING IS THAT EVERY SINGLE INCREASE THAT IS DONE BY THE LANDLORD IS A CONSCIOUS DECISION TO NOT TAKE ON THAT COST THEMSELVES. THEY'VE DECIDED TO PASS THAT ON TO SOMEONE WHO IS LESS FORTUNATE RENTING THEIR PROPERTY, AND SO PUTTING THIS IN PLACE REALLY IS ABOUT PROTECTING THE COMMUNITY. BUT A PROPERTY INVESTMENT GROUP REPRESENTATIVE SAYS THEY'RE NOT LOOKING TO INCREASE RENT FOR THOSE AFFECTED. WE ARE PART OF A TEAM WITH OUR TENANTS, AND IT'S A NEGOTIATION, AND WE REALLY NEED TO KEEP THIS COMMUNICATION OPEN. SO WE ARE NOT ASKING, IN THIS FIRST INSTANCE, FOR LANDLORDS TO RAISE RENTS. WILL THEY RAISE? WE DON'T KNOW, IT'S TOO EARLY TO TELL WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN WITH THE SUPPLY OF HOUSING IN NEW ZEALAND. SUTHERLAND SAYS THERE'RE NO CLEAR WRITTEN RULES TO GUIDE LANDLORDS IN THIS KIND OF SITUATION. QUEENSTOWN'S MAYOR SAYS THE RENTAL SHORTAGE IN THE REGION IS AN ACUTE ISSUE, DUE TO THE POST-LOCKDOWN TOURISM BOOM. IT COMES AFTER AN ATTEMPT TO RESTRICT HOMESTAY ACCOMMODATION PROVIDERS SUCH AS AIRBNB IN AND AROUND QUEENSTOWN HAS FAILED. THE ENVIRONMENT COURT TURNED DOWN THE COUNCIL'S PLAN TO INTRODUCE A 28-DAY-A-YEAR CAP IN OUTER RESIDENTIAL AREAS, AND 90 DAYS IN THE CENTRE OF TOWN. WE ARE TRYING TO CONTROL IT A LITTLE BIT MORE, ACTUALLY, RESTRICT THE NUMBER OF DAYS YOU COULD HAVE, SO YOU COULD STILL RENT IT OUT FOR THE HOLIDAY PERIODS WHILE YOU'RE AWAY, BUT MAKE IT EASIER FOR LONG-TERM RENTALS TO BE IN THE MARKET. LEWERS SAYS COUNCIL WILL CONTINUE TO LOBBY THE MINISTER OF HOUSING TO ADDRESS THE ISSUES. U.S. ABC'S ROBIN ROBERTS' HAS BEEN IN NEW ZEALAND TAKING A LOOK AT THE COUNTRY'S NATURAL BEAUTY WHEN WE'RE FACING A FUTURE WITH CLIMATE CHANGE. AT AOTEAROA'S MANY GLACIERS, THAT MEANS MELTING ICE AND FINANCIAL FALL-OUT. HERE'S ROBIN GETTING A BIRD'S EYE VIEW. (EPIC ORCHESTRAL MUSIC) TO GET AN UP-CLOSE LOOK AT NEW ZEALAND'S SPECTACULAR YET VANISHING GLACIERS... HELLO. GOOD MORNING. GOOD MORNING. SO THIS IS THE BIRD WE'RE GOING UP IN? CERTAINLY IS. WE SUITED UP TO SOAR THE BLUE SKIES FOR A BIRD'S EYE VIEW. IT'S WHAT SCIENTISTS CALL A CRITICAL PART OF THE CLIMATE CRISIS. TAKING OFF TO WITNESS THE DANGEROUSLY THIN ICE ` AN OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD EXPERIENCE. THE EXTREME TERRAIN NESTLED AT THE TOP OF NEW ZEALAND'S SOUTHERN ALPS, A BUSTLING TOURISM HUB AND AN EVERYDAY OFFICE FOR LONGTIME GLACIER PILOT MICHAEL KLEIN. SO UNTOUCHED. JUST SO NATURAL. CRYSTAL BLUE LAKES... OH MY GOODNESS. ...AND BREATHTAKING WATERFALLS. WOW. OUR LARGER-THAN-LIFE TREK REVEALING THE IMPACT OF A CHANGING CLIMATE. IT LOOKS LIKE A WATERFALL, BUT IT'S ACTUALLY ICE ALL FALLING OFF THE CLIFFS, SMASHING, AND SO YOU CAN SEE THEM JUST DISAPPEARING RIGHT BEFORE OUR EYES. FROM YOUR POINT OF VIEW, HOW HAVE YOU SEEN THE GLACIERS CHANGE OVER THE YEARS? I'VE SPENT CONSIDERABLE TIME THINKING ABOUT IT, BECAUSE I FLY AROUND THEM EVERY DAY, AND I LAND ON THEM, AND I CAN TELL YOU I'VE WATCHED GLACIERS COMPLETELY DISAPPEAR THROUGHOUT MY CAREER. BEHIND THE STUNNING LANDSCAPE LIE CRACKS AND CREVICES ` THE ICE MELTING AT A RECORD RATE. THE RAPID RETREAT CREATING A LONG-TERM THREAT TO LOCALS WHO DEEPLY RELY ON BUSTLING GLACIER TOURISM. JUST A DECADE AGO, THE GRIM REALITY SETTING IN. 6000FT ABOVE SEA LEVEL, IT WAS TIME TO EXPERIENCE THE GLACIERS CONDITIONS FIRSTHAND. STICKING OUR LANDING, A SURREAL MOMENT TO TAKE IN THE SHEER MAGNITUDE ON TOP OF THE ICE. PEOPLE THAT WILL BE WATCHING THIS ` MANY OF THEM HAVE NOT BEEN TO NEW ZEALAND. THEY'VE NEVER BEEN ON A GLACIER. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO YOU THAT PEOPLE KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON HERE? WELL, THEY ARE DISAPPEARING QUICKLY. LIKE A FEW YEARS AGO, THE GLACIER FINISHED THERE, AND IT'S JUST BEEN SORT OF GRADUALLY RETREATING. I BRING TOURISTS FROM ALL AROUND THE WORLD TO APPRECIATE AND LOOK AT THESE BEAUTIFUL GLACIERS, BUT ONCE THEY'RE GONE, OBVIOUSLY, WE WON'T BE ABLE TO DO THAT ANYMORE. ONCE UPON A TIME, YOU COULD ACTUALLY WALK TO THE GLACIER. NOW THE ONLY WAY YOU CAN SEE IT IS BY CHOPPER. IT'S ALL RECEDED SO FAR UP THE MOUNTAIN, IT'S BASICALLY SURROUNDED BY CLIFFS, AND YOU'VE GOT TO BE A PRETTY INTREPID MOUNTAINEER TO HIKE UP THERE. YES, I WOULD SAY SO. THE MAGIC CARPET IS A LOT MORE CONVENIENT. IS THIS A THRILL FOR YOU? YEAH, IT IS. OUR TRIP WRAPPING WITH BRIGHT SUN, SOFT ICE AND EXTRAORDINARY VIEWS AS WE TAKE OFF IN OUR MAGIC CARPET. WHAT A WAY TO START THE WEEK. TO THE UKRAINE WAR ` VLADIMIR PUTIN HAS COMPARED RUSSIA'S INVASION OF UKRAINE TO THE FIGHT AGAINST NAZI GERMANY. IN A SPEECH TO MARK THE 80TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BATTLE OF STALINGRAD, PUTIN SAID HISTORY WAS REPEATING ITSELF WITH THE USE OF LEOPARD TANKS PROVIDED BY GERMANY. RUSSIA LAUNCHED ITS FULL-SCALE INVASION ALMOST A YEAR AGO, PROMPTING WESTERN COUNTRIES TO SEND WEAPONS TO THE UKRAINIAN GOVERNMENT IN KYIV. BRITAIN'S BIGGEST STRIKE IN A DECADE CONTINUED TODAY OVER PAY CONCERNS. MORE THAN HALF A MILLION WORKERS HAVE JOINED THE STRIKE, INCLUDING TEACHERS, UNIVERSITY STAFF ALONG WITH TRAIN AND BUS DRIVERS, PLUS CIVIL SERVANTS. THE STRIKE IS OVER UK'S WAGES NOT KEEPING PACE WITH INFLATION, AND IS FORCING TENS OF THOUSANDS OF SCHOOLS AROUND THE COUNTRY TO CLOSE. PRINCIPALS WOULD TURN UP TO SCHOOL NOT KNOWING THE NUMBER OF TEACHERS THAT WERE ALSO GOING TO TURN UP, WHICH MEANS THAT KIDS DID TURN UP TO SCHOOL, AND THEIR TEACHER DIDN'T, OR THE PARENTS DECIDED TO KEEP THEIR CHILDREN AT HOME, DESPITE A TEACHER BEING THERE. SO THAT'S THE KIND OF CHAOS AND DISRUPTION THAT IS HAPPENING HERE. THE UK'S INFLATION RATE IS CURRENTLY RUNNING AT 9.3%. STILL TO COME ON MIDDAY ` A NEW STRAIN OF BIRD FLU KILLS MILLIONS OF BIRDS IN THE UK ` SHOULD WE BE CONCERNED? PLUS ` TAKING A BREAK FROM ROYAL TRADITION ` WHO AUSTRALIANS WILL BE CARRYING AROUND IN THEIR WALLET. VOICEOVER: There's a lot more on offer when you join Spark Broadband. Like more family time or more family time with more family. Get Netflix and more on eligible Spark Broadband plans. HOKI MAI ANO. THERE'S A NEW FLU IN TOWN ` THIS ONE ONLY IN BIRDS. A NEW GLOBAL WAVE OF BIRD FLU HAS HIT THE UK, KILLING MORE THAN 200 MILLION BIRDS. IT'S SPILLING OVER TO SOME MAMMALS AND HAS BEEN DETECTED IN OTTERS AND FOXES, BUT AS THE BBC'S CLAIRE MARSHALL REPORTS, THE RISK TO HUMANS IS LOW. THIS IS NOW BY FAR THE WORST AVIAN FLU OUTBREAK IN GLOBAL HISTORY. MORE THAN 200 MILLION BIRDS, BOTH WILD AND FARMED, HAVE DIED OR HAD TO BE CULLED. A DEVELOPMENT THAT'S WORRYING SCIENTISTS NOW IS THE SPILL-OVER INTO MAMMALS. IN THE UK, THE VIRUS HAS BEEN FOUND IN FOXES. THEY ARE SCAVENGERS AND CAN FEED ON BIRDS. IT'S ALSO BEEN FOUND IN OTTERS, THE KIND OF ANIMAL ALSO LIKELY TO ENCOUNTER INFECTED BIRDS. LEADS TO LOTS OF DECISIONS... SO WHAT ABOUT THE RISK TO HUMANS? OK, SO THIS IS OUR GENETICS LABORATORY. WE WERE SHOWN INTO THE GOVERNMENT LAB IN SURREY AT THE HEART OF THE UK'S FIGHT AGAINST AVIAN FLU. SO HERE WE HAVE SOME OF THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION IN ORDER TO SPEED OUR WORK AND GENERATE THAT REALLY IMPORTANT DATA. SO THIS VIRUS IS ABSOLUTELY ON THE MARCH. HOW MUCH OF THAT IS A WORRY TO YOU THAT THIS MIGHT BE THE NEXT COVID-19 WELL, I THINK WHEN YOU ARE WORKING WITH THIS DISEASE EVERY DAY, YOU'RE ACUTELY AWARE OF THE RISKS AND WHAT IT CAN BECOME. WITHOUT OVERPLAYING ` THIS GLOBAL SPREAD IS A CONCERN. IF WE DON'T SOLVE THE PROBLEM ACROSS THE GLOBE, WE'RE GOING TO CONTINUE TO HAVE THAT RISK. THIS VIEW IS HELD AROUND THE GLOBE. WE SPOKE TO THE HEAD OF SCIENCE AT THE WORLD ORGANISATION FOR ANIMAL HEALTH. THERE IS A RISK FOR FURTHER TRANSMISSION BETWEEN SPECIES AND WE CANNOT UNDERESTIMATE THE POTENTIAL ADAPTATION TO HUMAN VIRUS. AND THAT WILL, IN ADDITION TO THE RISK FOR IMPACTING ANIMAL HEALTH, WILL HAVE A VERY IMPORTANT IMPACT IN PUBLIC HEALTH. (DUCKS QUACK) THE THREAT TO HUMANS IS STILL SAID TO BE VERY LOW. OVERWHELMINGLY, THE VIRUS INFECTS BIRDS. ON A GLOBAL LEVEL, THE SITUATION WITH THIS VIRUS IS GETTING MORE AND MORE CRITICAL, AND YET THE FIRST LINE OF DEFENCE IS OFTEN PEOPLE JUST OUT AND ABOUT. IN WARWICKSHIRE, THIS LAKE IS TREASURED BY LOCALS. MANY MIGRATING WATERFOWL COME HERE. LAST MONTH THERE WAS AN OUTBREAK OF AVIAN FLU AND RESTRICTIONS ARE STILL IN PLACE. IT'S BEEN HORRENDOUS. IT'S BEEN AWFUL. SUE RUNS A VOLUNTEER GROUP. WE'RE OUT HERE EVERY DAY. WE CAN SEE WHAT'S GOING ON. WE CAN SEE THE STATE OF THE BIRDS THAT ARE IN. WE CHECK OUT ALL THE AREAS AROUND WITH THE BINOCULARS TO MAKE SURE THERE'S NO DEAD ANIMALS IN THE CORNERS. THE ADVICE IS CLEAR ` HEED ANY WARNING SIGNS AND DON'T TOUCH ANY DEAD OR DYING BIRDS. KING CHARLES III WON'T BE FEATURING ON AUSTRALIA'S NEW $5 NOTE. THE LATE QUEEN ELIZABETH II IS CURRENTLY ON THE NOTE, BUT AFTER HER MAJESTY'S DEATH LAST YEAR, A DEBATE WAS SPARKED ABOUT AUSTRALIA'S FUTURE AS A CONSTITUTIONAL MONARCHY. OFFICIALS SAY THE NEW DESIGN WILL HONOUR THE CULTURE AND HISTORY OF THE FIRST AUSTRALIANS. THE BLACKCAPS HAVE RETURNED HOME FROM INDIA AND ARE STRAIGHT INTO TEST MATCH PREPARATIONS, NAMING THEIR TEST SQUAD FOR ENGLAND. PACE BOWLER KYLE JAMIESON COULD SEE HIMSELF MAKE A RETURN TO THE TEST SIDE AFTER BEING FORCED OUT WITH A BACK INJURY LAST YEAR. ISH SOHDI CLAIMS ONE OF THE SPINNER SPOTS AFTER AN IMPRESSIVE PERFORMANCE AGAINST PAKISTAN. COACH GARY STEAD SAYS THEY DON'T WANT TO OVER-WORK JAMIESON. COMING BACK FROM A REASONABLY SERIOUS BACK INJURY, AND JUST WANT TO PUT IT OUT THERE RIGHT FROM THE START THAT I THINK IT'S UNLIKELY THAT KYLE WILL PLAY BOTH TEST MATCHES, AND THAT'S JUST ABOUT HIS CONTINUED REHABILITATION. THE TWO-TEST SERIES STARTS IN TAURANGA LATER THIS MONTH. TO SPORT NOW, AND IT'S ALL ABOARD THE BREAKERS TRAIN AS THEY CONTINUE THEIR END-OF-SEASON WIN STREAK, BEATING THE ILLAWARRA HAWKS BY 10 POINTS. THE KIWIS FOUND THEMSELVES 16 POINTS DOWN AT HALFTIME, BUT MANAGED TO PULL IT BACK, WINNING 91-81. AMERICAN IMPORTS BARRY BROWN JR AND JARRELL BRANTLEY SAVING THE DAY. BRANTLEY ` AN OPEN LOOK. BREAD AND BUTTER FOR HIM. BARRY BROWN FINISHING THINGS OFF. IT'S OUT TO DOUBLE DIGITS NOW. THE BREAKERS HAVE PULLED THE TRIGGER. TOM ABERCROMBIE SAYS THE TEAM WAS STUNNED IN THE OPENING QUARTER. TO THEIR CREDIT, THEY CAME OUT AN ABSOLUTELY PUNCHED US IN THE MOUTH. BUT, UM... WE HAVE BEEN PRETTY GOOD AT TAKING PUNCHES THIS YEAR, AND RESPONDING THE RIGHT WAY. WE DID IT AGAIN, BUT AGAIN, NOT A POSITION YOU WANT TO FIND YOURSELF IN. THE FINAL MATCH OF THE REGULAR SEASON WILL BE AGAINST THE BRISBANE BULLETS ON SATURDAY. AMERICAN BIDDERS WILL BE EMPTYING THEIR WALLETS AND BREAKING RECORDS WITH THE LATE KOBE BRYANT'S PLAYING SINGLET UP FOR SALE. BRYANT WORE THE LAKERS JERSEY 25 TIMES DURING HIS '07-'08 MVP SEASON. THE NBA SUPERSTAR DIED IN A HELICOPTER CRASH THREE YEARS AGO. THE FIVE-TIME NBA CHAMPION ONLY HAD ONE MVP SEASON THROUGHOUT HIS 20-YEAR CAREER. OTHER ATHLETES, INCLUDING MICHAEL JORDAN AND ROGER FEDERER ALSO HAVE GEAR UP FOR SALE. STILL TO COME ON MIDDAY, I'LL BE BACK WITH THE AFTERNOON WEATHER. AND A FEW KENYAN ATHLETES ARE TRADING THEIR TRAINERS FOR ICE HOCKEY SKATES. One minute, you're trying to get more light in the room. (CRASH!) The next, you've got a skylight. - (GRUNTS) - So get covered with Tower and get a month's premium on us with every eligible insurance policy you buy online. IT WAS A NIGHT OF FIREWORKS, GLOWING GUITAR PICKS AND DANCING FOR THE RECORD-BREAKING CROWD THAT SAW ED SHEERAN IN THE CAPITAL LAST NIGHT. 48,000 FANS TURNED UP TO SEE THE POPSTAR. BUT ONE LOCAL FAN STOLE THE SPOTLIGHT WHEN SHEERAN PULLED HER ON-STAGE TO BELT OUT 'GALWAY GIRL' BY HIS SIDE. (SINGS 'GALWAY GIRL') SHEERAN SAID IT WAS THE FIRST TIME HE'D HAD SOMEONE COME ON STAGE AND SING. WHEN YOU THINK OF KENYA, ICE HOCKEY DOESN'T REALLY COME TO MIND. BUT THEIR TEAM ARE DREAMING BIG. THE KENYA ICE LIONS ONLY HAVE ONE ICE HOCKEY RINK, AND WHEN THE SIDE CAN'T USE THAT, THEY HEAD TO THE ROOFTOPS TO TRAIN ON ROLLER BLADES. THE ICE LIONS HAVE ALREADY PLAYED MATCHES AGAINST TEAMS FROM THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA, AND HOPE ONE DAY THEY CAN JOIN THE INTERNATIONAL ICE HOCKEY FEDERATION.
