Ngā Whenua Rāhui came about in the 1980s when Māori in Waikare in the north looked to sell their lands to pay the rates. That struggle saw the establishment of Ngā Whenua Rāhui in 1991, a contestable fund to support Māori landowners to protect their native forests through pest eradication and the preservation of the mauri, history and mātauranga Māori.
