Today, descendants of the Te Arawa waka commemorated the 140th anniversary of the Tarawera eruption, which claimed the lives of around 120 people, most of them Maori. Organisers say the day is about reflecting on the night when villages, treasured places and people were buried ` a tragedy that remains deeply etched in the memories of their descendants.
