1Whose Marbles Are They Anyway? Early in the 19th century, a Scottish nobleman--Lord Elgin--systematically stripped some of the finest classical Greek sculptures from the Parthenon in Athens and shipped them back to England. Eventually the 'Elgin Marbles' ended up in the possession of the British Museum. Now the Greeks are saying they want their 'Marbles' back. In a campaign led by former actress Melina Mercouri (now Greek Minister of Culture) they say that they sculptures are a symbol of their nationhood which ought to be returned to them. For their part, the trustees of the British Museum say their responsibility as custodians for great works of civilization overrides the claims of narrow nationalism. They also fear that if they gave in to the Greeks then it wouldn't stop there, other nations would then insist on reclaiming items of their own national culture.
