A documentary about a group of 14 and 15 year old boys who left their Hawke's Bay home of Wairoa in the late 1950s and early 1960s to start a new life and learn a trade in the predominately white city of Christchurch. These men are now in their 50s and tell how the experience changed them and made them feel special, and how on visits back to Wairoa they felt and looked different from their siblings and had lost their ability to speak Te Reo Maori.
