We're the Wilson sisters. We live and breathe horses. We ride them, train them, show them... and fall off them. Vicki's the oldest. Vicki's crazy. Every year she comes out with something new. I love extreme, a little bit dangerous, something different. Kelly ` she's the girly one, the princess. You don't get a body like this from sitting in my room the whole day. (LAUGHS) And then there's me, Amanda. Amanda's always been the mischief-maker. I lassoed me a man! Me and my sisters are on our wildest ride yet. With less than 70 days to go, the countdown is on to NZ's first ever Kaimanawa Stallion Challenge. I did it, and I even impressed my sister. I feel like I'm achieving things that I only dreamed of. There's been some rough rides, but these horses are really stepping up. Oh my goodness! Copyright Able 2015 Tonight ` clash of the trainers,... < Amanda, you can't keep doing that! Kelly, shut up! ...our challenge champion broken... I cried when they put it back in. It was that painful. (LAUGHS) ...and yee-hah for holidays. It's every girl's dream to be a cowgirl. BLUES GUITAR MUSIC It's been less than three months since these stallions were running wild on the Kaimanawa plains. Life on the farm is still very new for them. Oh! Kelly! And Kelly dropping the ramp is not helping their nerves. Stupid dumb-bum. < You're an idiot, Kelly. A big part of the Stallion Challenge is the handling section of the competition. You have to be able to load him on to a float. Yeah, OK, let's time it. OK, timing. Go! 'We all have quite different training styles.' Up. 'I take a trial-and-error approach.' Up. Reverse. Go, Amanda! It took me, like, three minutes. I can beat three minutes. Come on, handsome. Kelly's very gentle, soft with her horses. She wants to be their friend. (SNORTS) He really doesn't like it, do you? Thank goodness I have food. If I didn't have any food, it would be even worse. Good boy. I'm pretty sure that was under three minutes, Amanda. It took four and half. (SNORTS) Argo's not keen,... You don't want to be on a float. (CLICKS TONGUE) No attitude. ...but Vicki's a pro. Going on a float can be very frightening. It's a small, dark, enclosed space, and for a wild horse, their natural instinct is to run away. You can't decide when you've had enough. (CLICKS TONGUE) Good. LAID-BACK GUITAR MUSIC Nikau and I aced the handling skills part of the competition, but the ridden section, that's the one freaking me out. Reverse. We've just got to go out, we've got to walk, trot, canter, and I'm hoping I'll be able to jump Nikau. (WHINNIES) (LAUGHS) Got attitude, Amanda. Got lots of attitude. QUIRKY MUSIC You're a rat. Second time I rode him,... he did that. Ow, my face. Third time. < Amanda, you can't keep doing that. Kelly, shut up! But he's acting` I don't care. I had no choice but to jump off. Well, wait until someone actually` Shut up! He bolts off and tries to kick her every time. Shut up! Kelly's advice is not helping. Kelly, that is what you do. You have to fix it. OK, you just keep going and going until they stop. Simple. It's her method, not yours. (LAUGHS) See if you can lean back a little more, Amanda. He's saying, 'Hey, Mum, I don't understand,' and his way of asking that question is to get attitude-y and paw the ground. It's something he has to work through. At the same time, Amanda has to learn from him. Learn something? I'm just trying to survive. We'll put a cover on it. Vicki, on the other hand, is dreaming up plans for the freestyle section of the challenge. We park it here. So the idea of it is I'm supposed to teach him to back up and then teach him how to sit. I've seen it done once on a video. We'll give it a go. O...K, Vicki thinks she's going to get that big horse sitting on that tiny chair. Good boy. People think, yeah, horses run and jump, but they're capable of so much more. I wanna show how amazing Argo is, what he's capable of and how trusting he is of me. Good boy. He's trying. He's really trying. Ooh, Argo. (GRUNTS) There we go. Don't move your feet, OK? Good boy. He looks very uncomfortable. Not many horses I can put in this position stay without them exploding and freaking out. Good man. Oh my goodness. That's almost a sit. It's quite unreal what situations I can put him in and what he copes with. It's amazing. He's a multitalented pony, this one. You're incredible, aren't you, Argo? Tomorrow's another day. CRICKETS CHIRP I'd like top six in something. I'm... I'm gonna make it happen. I'm going to be top six in something. I get the feeling like the top six is going to be Vicki, Chloe, Kate and Tim and Tommy. I ain't going to be winning the in-hand section. I'm talking about this. What's wrong with me? I'll win the riding section. Kelly, your horses never do what it's told. It does! Don't write me off just yet, Amanda. Anzac and I are gonna be amazing. I'm sucking most out of all three of us. Nikau just bucked me off three times one day. I'm gonna win it all. No one's gonna beat me, sorry. Well, I think you do have the highest chance of the ridden class. Yeah, I have a very beautiful horse. I reckon we'll all be in the top six. You watch this space. While we're building up to the Stallion Challenge, it's not the only project we have. Vicki's new stable complex is growing, and Kelly is keen to decorate. Vicki's birthday is in a week, and we're building the signs for all her new stable complex. So we just have to brace them into a frame and then cut all these out with scissors, pencil mark, stencil them on. So that's all we've gotta do. We've just got to cut these out. Oh my God! Why didn't you get it printed on cardboard, Kelly? Because it was, like, 10 bucks more. Really? (LAUGHS) She's kind of got, like, quotes or sayings that she's really well known for, so we're putting two of those on to two big quote sign boards. Nah. The other way round. They have to go round the other way. QUIRKY MUSIC Arena. I don't think she'll appreciate how much time has gone into it, but I think she'll love them, even if she has to fake loving them. No, she'll love them. GENTLE MUSIC A small plate would have done the trick really well. Thank you, Heather. Yeah, I` Today it's a birthday brekkie for Vicki. Mum and Dad are cooking up a storm. I've never made waffles in my life. (LAUGHS) That is very cool, Lukas. Wow. Whose idea was that, Kelly? Obviously Kelly's. (LAUGHS) How cool's that? That is awesome. And then this is your second present. That's fantastic. But I spelt symptoms wrong, but then Lukas saved the day! LAUGHTER Lukas saved the day. He sanded it back, I re-whited it, and then I wrote it again. And then this one. Good. That is very good. That's cool. < Bridle rack. Not quite finished. That's very cool. ALL EXCLAIM ALL: Screamer! He says happy birthday! Out, you little brat. Screamer's not the only one having a rough time around here. Now that Hoff's teeth are on the mend, I'm hoping for some progress. By opening this rein, I want him to learn he's gotta move in` move in that direction. And when I open this rein,... he's gotta move in that direction. And when I wiggle the rope at him, he needs to move away from me. Good boy. Learning some simple commands is a great step. < (CLICKS TONGUE) Good boy. Up. Up, up, up. If Hoff can learn to deal with strange new objects, he'll gain confidence and trust in me. Good boy. There we go. I want to see if I can get him trotting behind me. (CLICKS TONGUE) Hoff's finally making headway, and Nikau's going so well on the float. I've come up with a trick of my own. I'm gonna have the Zorro factor. (WHISTLES) LATIN-STYLE MUSIC Good boy. (WHISTLES) Oi! Nikau, come here. (CLICKS TONGUE) MUSIC CONTINUES Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. (WHISTLES) Come on. At the moment he's following me on the float, not coming when I call. I hope that what I'm doing here will be something I do at Equidays, and I doubt anyone else will be doing it. Back. Back. Good boy. (CLICKS TONGUE) Back. Good boy. Good boy. (SNORTS) Good boy! Good man! Here we go. This is a proud mummy moment. He's pretty embarrassed. He said he never had to do any of this stupid stuff on the plains. Eh? DOWNCAST MUSIC For Vicki, the celebration's over. There's been another trip to the emergency room. One of the girls was riding a horse yesterday that came for schooling, and it was being rather naughty, so I hopped on to see what it was doing, and she reared five or six times. And then all of a sudden, she just shot right up, lost her balance and went straight over the back on top of me. The entire body is flat. It's been run over by two trains, I think. I went in and got it X-rayed just because it's very very painful. And they said it's not broken, but it had dislocated the wrist, and I actually cried when he put it back in. It was that painful. For Vicki to have even gone to the hospital yesterday for X-rays is massive. Vicki never admits to pain, so the fact that she's concerned gives us plenty of reason to worry. Vicki's injury could change everything. Good girl. And she's certainly not meant to be riding. OK. Oh, you're such a good pony. Today we've got Dan the back man here to look at Nikau. I reckon he's sore in the poll and the wither. But when you touch his wither, he does try to bite you, so have fun. Nikau, eh? (SNORTS) You can feel all the energy inside him, eh? He's just... ...coiled up. All boiled up. Dan's a horse skeletal therapist. He's giving Nikau the once-over to see if the bucking is caused by a physical problem. < Do you reckon that's why he's a bit naughty to ride? Dan's discovered that my bucking bronco has an infected abscess on his wither, right where the front of the saddle sits. This is what we put on everything ` all cuts and whatnot. A poultice should draw out the infection. Yeah, so there's no point in trying to ride him, eh? Oh! That's two sisters grounded, but not riding doesn't drive me as nuts as Vicki. OBJECT SHATTERS She just can't help herself. That way! No. LAUGHTER Not quite! HEATHER: What was it? I wasn't gonna bring him in, then... It's not very clever on my carpet. I wasn't trying to get him in. I was trying get him on to the step, and he ended up climbing the whole way in and walking without me. Good excuse. He did. If he poops in my house, you're in trouble. JAUNTY MUSIC Ta-da! Learning to go everywhere, this boy is. Good man. Just another day in the Wilson family. Come on, it would have been amazing if Argo had sat on the couch. (GRUNTS) It's getting crazy around here. All of us need a break, so we're going on holiday to the Wild West. (BLEATS) WESTERN MUSIC Oops, sorry, Screamer. BLUES ROCK MUSIC We've decided a holiday's in order, but in true Wilson fashion, we're taking quite a crowd and, of course, our horses. We've come to Mellonsfolly ranch in the Ruatiti Valley, which is about an hour from Ruapehu. We've all made it, but we seem to have lost Kelly and Lukas on the way. Kelly... detoured. She went on a little bit of a scenic trip, then went to New Plymouth. She has been to the snow many many trips. So about a five-hour romance to get started. I don't know how you can get lost, but it is Kelly Wilson. Mellonsfolly is a Wild West town, and we're really getting into it. We have to be girls. I could wear heels when I ride a horse. Is that a girl shirt? A dress? I don't wear dresses. This is crazy. I don't know what the look is, but if I wore that and a waistcoat... PEOPLE CHATTER I look bitchin'. Where are we changing? Here? Right here? Right here. (YODELS) PEOPLE CHATTER, LAUGH I don't look like a cowboy. I look amazing. Tie a knot in it. That must mean something. Just never going to happen. Get on. I just wanna shoot something. Are we allowed to shoot something? For her, and the light brown one, please. LAUGHTER Thank you. When they do this in movies, they can't do this, cos they're touching the trigger. They'll shoot themselves in the stomach. Nailed it! (IMITATES GUNSHOT) < Vicki, stop laughing at me! Get out. Now. Hurry up! (SPEAKS INDISTINCTLY) Can I have a Western shirt, please? Why are you wearing black? Where? Can I have a shirt? Are you in your pyjamas? The dog peed on my` She's in her`! Cos Theo peed on my lap while I was driving. That doesn't give you any reason` I didn't have a change of clothes. Whoo! LAUGHTER I lassoed me a man. WESTERN MUSIC I'm gonna throw that back in the water. LAUGHTER OK, when you're ready. Yeah, that's cool right there. That's perfect. CHEERING CHEERING She got it. Look at the photo of her getting lassoed. LAUGHTER OK, ready? Texas! WESTERN MUSIC For us to come on holiday, it's like an adventure for us, and it's really exciting to have a change of scenery and to try something new. We just do whatever we want, whenever we want, and we don't follow the rules. That sounds brattish. No, but in` without breaking the law. (LAUGHS) ALL LAUGH Luckily the sheriff's not around with handcuffs. I reckon. Is this loaded? The other one. Just run it and press this one across. Oh, you little sucker. Oh, somebody hit something. Three out of three. Boom! I hit one. I'm not just a pretty face. OK, I got it. I got it. That was me hitting it. That was me. There were two shots. It's every girl dreams to be a cowgirl, yeah, and to actually, like, be here in legitimate town, you can play the part and not feel like an idiot. It's pretty amazing. It's really authentic, and we've had lot of fun. Honestly, it feels like we're in a movie. It's the coolest thing ever. WESTERN MUSIC And a great way to meet Tommy, who's also got Kaimanawas in the challenge. He's pretty cool. I'm having horse envy. He's so gorgeous. Hello. LAID-BACK BLUES MUSIC With both Vicki and Nikau on the mend, a ride in the mountains is a great chance to finally chill out and reconnect with our horses. I don't think my horse has been ridden this long in its whole entire life. I definitely know mine hasn't. MUSIC CONTINUES We're gonna get wet soon. They're pretty unfit for this kind of work, but they're enjoying it. The first time Anzac's been ridden off the flat ground, so... They've all behaved pretty good. Yeah, the hills were pretty intense, but the horses just loved it. They're pretty tired, though. They've been going for over an hour, and they're not very fit. Argo, you're not in that crew. You're part of a different group. You're a good kid. Good boy. Good boy. He was listening, and he was real well behaved. Hey, boy. It's like a real big breakthrough finally. I, last week, was getting to the point where if I ever heard the name Kaimanawas, I wanted to rip my head off. I feel like now I actually have a relationship with him. Yep, he's my new best friend. I am, however, knackered. GIGGLING Who actually has two baths in one room? Uh, a couple who have a boyfriend, which I'm talking about... A couple who have a boyfriend. that's tricky. BOTH LAUGH You'd have to have a boyfriend for this to work. The bath? Yeah. It's just weird when there are two sisters. That's why we need a boyfriend. That's why there's so many bubbles. KNOCK AT DOOR Have the strippers arrived? What are you doing? We're talking about Amanda's need to get a boyfriend. You guys look like alcoholic idiots. It's not even` Excuse me, this is Sprite. I have a bikini on cos I wouldn't be naked in a bath next to Kelly. No offence. Today it's goodbye, cowboy town, hello, Kaimanawa Ranges. We're taking our wild boys home for a visit. Ha ha, funny. It's not actually that hard` It's pretty exciting to take a truckload of Kaimanawas back to where they've come from and to ride through that country, and it's kind of like a reward to them. Oh, look, Vic, it's gorgeous. Nikau keeps looking out over the ranges, looking all happy. GENTLE MUSIC LAUGHTER Go, Amanda. It's so much fun! Remind you of home, little man? Argo's fascinated. Ooh, look! He's home! Oh, ponies! We got to the top at the look out, and you can see the hills and mountains. All of the horses just completely came alive. It was like that whole expanse ` no fences, complete wilderness. And they were like, 'Yeah, this is what home is.' Yeah. GENTLE MUSIC Walk on. It doesn't look so fun now. It looks really steep. Your horse is more clever than ours. Come on, guys. Good boy, Argo. I'm bareback. Kelly, just try. You can fail at things. Keep going. Straight ` don't go that way. Oh shit. Shit! LAUGHTER (LAUGHS) What the hell? ALL TALK AT ONCE So after I took a little bit of a tumble, he took off back to the back of that cliff, and it was pretty amazing that he actually stayed there to be caught and didn't disappear off into his homeland. We've now become partners. They're here because they want to be. We've rewarded them, and I think they're gonna start to reward us now. ROCK MUSIC Shocking but true ` our last holiday adventure doesn't involve any horses. Argh! I'm gonna crash! It has been so cool. It's just been kind of like what we all needed to get away and, I don't know, just have a break from it all. LAUGHTER Smash it. Smash it.
