www.able.co.nz Captions were made possible with funding from NZ On Air. Able 2016. If you have a fever and cough, or sore throat, stay home. MAN: I'd say 95% chance this was manufactured-- came out of a laboratory. WOMAN: The source of the virus was traced back to drug testing done at Gen-Sys Laboratories, in San Francisco. MAN 2: The lab technician now known as Patient Zero was accidentally exposed to retrovirus ALZ-113, an Alzheimer's trial drug that was being tested on chimpanzees... MAN 3: The infected chimps showed signs of erratic and aggressive behaviour that lead to their escape from the facility... WOMAN 2: The now-famous incident on the Golden Gate Bridge, a six-hour standoff with police, ended with the apes disappearing into Muir Woods. MAN 4: Emergency rooms are being overwhelmed with patients showing signs of what's being dubbed "The Simian Flu." WOMAN 3: The CDC is projecting a fatality toll ranging from five million to as many as 150 million in the next six to eight months. MAN 5: Anyone showing signs of a contagious illness will receive special treatment here, the airport's purpose-built quarantine centre... MAN 6: ...many of the new arrivals are children who have lost contact with their parents. MAN 7: The mandatory quarantines have sparked civil unrest. Families are being ripped apart. Containment is... is not very likely. Prepare your families, know your evacuation route... MAN 8: The survival rate is now, approximately, one in 500... WOMAN 4: Violence erupted in the city centre tonight, the third incident in as many days... WOMAN 5: Martial law has been declared in 28 nations, including the U.S. and Canada... MAN 9: The reactor's overheating. We can't stop a meltdown. MAN 10: ...at this point, our generator lost its power... WOMAN 6: Just a total collapse of anything resembling civilian order... WOMAN 7: ...due to the extremity of the simian flu crisis, all regular government functions have been suspended indefinitely. (siren wailing, crowd clamouring) MAN 11: Those who aren't killed by the virus... (sighs heavily) ...will probably die in the fighting. (panting) So... maybe this is it. This is how it ends. Pretty soon... (panting) there won't be anyone left. (click) (thunder rumbling) (heavy breathing) (thunder rumbles) (exhales) (grunts) (grunting, panting) (apes continue grunting and panting) (roars) (rumbling) (growling) (roars) (apes screeching) (gruff panting) (chittering) (apes screeching in distance) (panting) (whimpering) (roars) (screeching) -(bear roars) -(ape screeches) (grunting) (ape roars) (gruff chattering) (apes screeching) (grunting) (grunting, growling) (panting) (grunting, roaring) (roars) -(apes grunting) -(bear groaning) (roars) -(ape screeching) -(bear groaning) (panting, groaning) (panting) (gasps) (grunts) (sighs) (horse neighing) (apes grunting and moaning) (grunting) (chattering) (apes chattering and grunting) (chattering continues) (hooting) (panting) (weak groaning) (groaning continues) (sighs) (soft whimpering) (laboured breathing) (grunting) (grunting) (infant crying) (infant panting) (squeaky whimpering) (high-pitched fussing) (grunts, chuckles) (sighs) (screeching) (screeching) (sniffing, panting) Shh. Hey! -(gunshot echoes) -(Blue Eyes shrieks) -(gasps) -(distant screeching) (panting) -(panting) -(apes hooting, screeching) Stay! Help! -(hooting) -Help! No! Hey! Over here! I shot him. I shot him. (apes hooting) (other apes hooting and screeching) (fierce screeching) (grunting, panting) (hooting, screeching) -(grunting) -(hooting) (grunts) We don't mean any harm. (whispering): They're apes, man. Do you think they understand what you're saying? (apes hooting) Do they look like just apes to you? -(low growling) -(hooting, grunting) -Dad... -Malcolm, what are you doing? -Dad. -Malcolm. -It's okay. Put your guns down. -You can't be serious. -Do it. Go! -Holy shit. -Holy shit. -(grunts) -(humans gasping) Okay. Okay, we're... we're going. -Go! -MALCOLM: Let's go, slowly. -Go, go, go! Let's go! -KOBA: Go! -(apes screeching) -Dad! -Dad! My bag! -Let's go! -Go! Go! -(apes hooting and grunting) (apes screeching and hooting) (screeching and hooting quiets) (panting) (Koba and apes grunting) (deep growl) (apes huffing, hooting) (panting) Did you find it? We need to talk. What? What's wrong? The, uh... the dam's pretty much intact. It can probably start generating power for us within a week. But there's a problem. Get in. I shot him. I was scared; I didn't know what to do. Jesus Christ! How many were there? There were a lot. There were, like, 80. -At least. -Okay, you're not hearing what he's saying. -They spoke! -That is not possible. I'm telling you, Dreyfus, they did. It was incredible. Incredible?! They're talking apes! With big-ass spears! -DREYFUS: Please! I don't know exactly what you think you saw... or heard, b-but you have to calm down, okay? What about the virus, Ellie? Any chance of contagion? We're all genetically immune, or we would have been dead a long time ago. -You don't know that for sure. -She worked with the CDC-- she knows. -What are we gonna do? -I don't know. We need that power. He could've killed us; he didn't. Maybe he kept us alive so they could follow us, they find out where we are, and they kill us all! -What do you mean, "he"? -That's what we're trying to tell you, okay? It was unlike anything you've ever seen before, and the leader... he was remarkable. CARVER: Really? -Is that what you thought? -It's what we saw. Yeah. It's what we all saw. Listen to me. Not a word of this back at the colony, you understand me? Not a word until we can figure out what to do. -You got to be kidding. No, I'm not kidding! I don't want to create a panic. (overlapping, indistinct conversations) How you doing, pal? You okay? I dropped my bag. I know. -Was your sketchbook in there? -It's gone. -Carver just told me we're not gonna tell anybody what happened up there. -Not yet, no. (indistinct, overlapping conversations) Stop moping. The lad's gone. Oh. Yeah. (SIGHS) INDISTINCT CONVERSATIONS Ooh. Sorry. Oh. (SIGHS) Grandpa? Are you there? Sorry. Grandpa? CELL PHONE BUZZES, CHIMES INDISTINCT CONVERSATIONS You've sent it. (CHUCKLES) (CHUCKLES) Whacko. CELL PHONE BUZZES, CHIMES Whether it's simple tips or tricky tech solutions, Vodafone Ninjas are here to help. (screeching, hooting) (deep growl) (apes chittering, grunting) (apes hooting, grunting) -No! -(hooting, grunting stop) (low grunts) Home. Family. (ape grunting quietly) Future. (ape grunting quietly) (low grunting) Caesar. (low huffs) (grunts, huffs) (panting) (grunting, hooting) (horse neighs) (horse whinnies) Coming through, coming through. -Coming through. -MAN: What's going on?! WOMAN: What's happening? What is it? -(excited chatter) -(siren blaring) Wait! Be careful! (siren continues blaring) That's a hell of a lot more than 80. -(siren continues blaring) -(excited chatter continues) (low rumbling) (metallic creaking) (horse neighs) (low, indistinct talking) (horses neighing) Malcolm! (horse approaching) (huffs) (echoing shout): Apes... (people gasping, chattering) ...do not want war... but will... fight... if... we must! (huffs) (panting) (trembling breaths) (panting quietly) (echoing): Ape home! Human... home. (quieter): Do not come back. -(ape exhales) -(horse whinnies) (low growl) (clamouring) Everyone! DREYFUS: Everyone, you have to calm down! (clamouring continues) -(feedback whines) -(clamouring continues) -Everybody! Everybody... please! We are all immune! We're all immune, or-or we wouldn't still be here! -(clamouring stops) -MAN: How did they find us? MAN 2: Yeah, how'd they know we're here? -We found them. -You knew they were out there -and you didn't tell us? -WOMAN: What if they come back? -(clamouring resumes) -If they come back... if they come back, they'll be sorry they ever did. (clamouring quiets) Now, this city may not have the manpower it once did, -but it has the firepower. -(clamour quiets) Those stockpiles left behind by FEMA... the National Guard, we have it all. Look... I know why you're scared. I'm scared, too. Believe me. But I recognize the trust you've all placed in me. We've been through hell together! But you all know... what we're up against. We're almost out of fuel. Which means no more power, which means we could... slip back to the way things were. That dam up there was the answer. Now, we just had no idea they were up there, too. -WOMAN: So what do we do now? -(all shouting) -(clamouring) -DREYFUS: We find another way. (clamouring quiets) Because that power... it's not just about keeping the lights on, it's about giving us the tools to reconnect to the rest of the world, to find out who else is out there, so that we can start to... to rebuild... and reclaim... the world we lost. (indistinct shouts in distance) That was a great speech. There is no alternative power source. That dam is the only option. Well, then we fight them. We're two weeks away from running out of fuel, maybe three, tops. I know. And once that happens... I won't be able to go out there with a bullhorn and calm everybody down. We need... that power to get the radio transmitter working. It's our only chance of reaching the outside world. We have to find other survivors. Yeah. Yeah, there's not that many of us left. We can't afford any more casualties. We founded this place... you and I... I know. ...on the idea that power would lead us back to the life we once had. If we can't stick together, maybe we can't survive. I lost everything. The idea of losing what little I have is... I want to go back up there. Listen to me: Give me three days. Let me talk to him. If it doesn't work, then we do it your way. And what if it backfires? What if he gets violent? I mean, how do you know that he'll even understand you? He's more than just an ape. I'm gonna take some men up to Fort Point. I'm gonna go through the armoury. I'm gonna see what's still working. Three days. You're not back in three days, we're going up there and we're gonna kill every last one of them. (sighs) Carver's getting the trucks ready. He'll be here with Foster and Kemp any minute. You're really taking Carver? I mean, he shot one of them. Well, I don't really have any choice. He used to work at the water department. He's the only one who knows how the dam works. Malcolm, what are you gonna do up there? What are you gonna say? I'll tell him the truth. Hope I catch him in a good mood. You think I'm crazy. I'm worried. Yeah, so am I. I've gone over it in my head... and I think if I don't at least try this... there's gonna be a war. Take me with you. What if someone gets hurt? You'll need me there. (softly): I love you. But I need you to stay here. I don't want Alexander to be alone. ALEXANDER: I'm coming, too. Son, it's not safe. I'm safer with you than I am down here. I'm coming. Please? (truck engine rumbling) (turns engine off) (rain pattering) MALCOLM: No one gets out of the trucks. -No one. -Okay. If I'm not back in two hours, you get everyone back to the city. It's gonna be okay. (opens door) (thunder rumbles) (panting) (panting) (pants) (rustling) (hissing exhale) (low growl) (hissing exhale) (growling) (low growl) (roaring) -(ape continues roaring) -(apes screeching) -(frantic panting) -(growling, grunting) (Malcolm gasping anxiously) (Malcolm yelling) (apes screeching) (screeching) -(ape growls) -(Malcolm gasps, pants) (panting slows) (apes sniffing, huffing) (Malcolm breathing anxiously) (low growl) No, please, please, please, please... -(chattering) -(panting) Please don't kill me. Just hear what I have to say. -(low chattering) -I know. "Don't come back. Don't..." I know. I just... I wouldn't be here unless it... -(ape screeching) -Okay, okay, okay. (screeching quiets) (panting): Okay. Okay. Okay. I need to show you something. -(low growl) -It's not far. KOBA: Human lies! -(screeching) -No! No! No. No, no, no, no, no. No. -(screeching quiets) -No, no, no. No, I swear. (Malcolm panting) If I could just show you, then you'll understand. -(Koba grunting) -Please. (apes grunting, screeching) (grunting, screeching continue) (grunting, screeching stop) (low grunting) Show... me. This is what we used to call the "small hydro." It was built to service areas to the north of here, but we've been working to reroute the power lines to the city, because the city used to run off nuclear power, but that ran out years ago, so we've been using diesel generators and gasifiers. But if we can just get this... this dam working, then we have a shot at restoring limited power. (panting) Is any of this making any sense to you? The... lights. Yes. The lights. This is your home, and I don't want to take it away from you, I promise, but... if you can allow us... let us do our work here... You... brought... others? (apes hoot and chatter) (chattering quiets) Just a few. I'm not a threat. If I am,... then I guess you can kill me. Stop moping. The lad's gone. Oh. Yeah. (SIGHS) INDISTINCT CONVERSATIONS Ooh. Sorry. Oh. (SIGHS) Grandpa? Are you there? Sorry. Grandpa? CELL PHONE BUZZES, CHIMES INDISTINCT CONVERSATIONS You've sent it. (CHUCKLES) (CHUCKLES) Whacko. CELL PHONE BUZZES, CHIMES Whether it's simple tips or tricky tech solutions, Vodafone Ninjas are here to help. (apes screeching) (engine grinding) CARVER: Come on. Come on. Come on! -(apes chattering) -Shit! -(engine starts) -ELLIE: Wait, wait, wait. -Stop. Stop. Stop. (apes screeching) (screeching quiets) We need to give them our guns. That's the one condition. What does that mean? We can stay. (low grunting) Let... them. Human... work? Human work. Human work. Human work! (seething breath) (Koba gasping) (panting softly) (huffs) (low inhale) Hey. You need to eat. Okay, just... That was brave, what you did today. Malcolm... I know everyone's depending on you... I don't care about that. I don't care about any of that. I care about him. He saw things that no kid should see, and I'm not letting us go back to that. I know. (sighs) ELLIE: I've been trying to get closer to him. (whispers): But... You will. FOSTER: You know the scary thing about 'em? They don't need power. Lights. Heat. Nothing. -MALCOLM: Hey, pal. -That's their advantage. That's what makes them stronger. Malcolm, I'm thinking one of us should stand guard tonight. With what? They took our guns. If they wanted us dead, we'd be dead already. Maybe they're just taking their time. They already killed off half the planet already. Come on. What? You can't honestly blame the apes. Who the hell else am I gonna blame? -It was the Simian Flu. -It was a virus created by scientists in a lab-- the chimps they were testing on didn't really have a say in the matter. Spare me the hippie-dippie bullshit. You're telling me you don't get sick to your stomach at the sight of them? Huh? Didn't you have a little girl? -MALCOLM: Carver, that's enough. -How'd she die? -That's enough! -Or your wife, for that matter. Carver, you better shut up before I kick your ass. (Carver sighs) Okay. I'm the asshole. You okay? (raspy breathing) (high-pitched sigh) (wheezing) -(rain falling lightly) -(birds chirping) (deep, quiet growl) (horses neighing) (baby ape's high-pitched grunt) (high-pitched yawn) (apes grunting) (men shout indistinctly) MAN: On the site! OFFICER: Most of the arsenal seems functional. DREYFUS: Good. OFFICER: We're testing 'em out back. (automatic gunfire in distance) MAN: Open two more up! (automatic gunfire continues) -(automatic gunfire continues in distance) -(quiet, huffing breaths) (huffing breaths) -MAN: Hey! -(grunts) Don't you move! Don't move! You understand me? Huh? Terry! Terry! Get in here quick! (slow, raspy breathing) Holy shit. What do we do? Huh? What do we do? Where'd he come from? -Should we shoot him? -Maybe, yeah, I don't know. (panting) You are one ugly son of a bitch, aren't you? (slow, raspy breathing) (blowing raspberry) (grunting laughter) (chuckles) Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Terry, I think he's hungry. He must have gotten separated from the others. You lost?! Trying to get home? (sputters) Go on! Get out of here, stupid monkey! -Go on! You heard him! Go! -Go! (grunts quietly) (water splashing) MALCOLM: We got to clear this blockage. I didn't know you had a daughter. Yeah. What was her name? Sarah. I'm really sorry. Well, now I have you and your dad. So... (softly): Yeah. MALCOLM: All right, you got that straight? KEMP: Mm-hmm. Down there. -CARVER: Pull it back. -MALCOLM: Okay. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. MALCOLM: That's all the wire we got. Brace yourselves. Three... two... one. -(explosion, rumbling) -(neighing) -(gasping) (creaking, knocking) -Dad! -Malcolm! (yelling in distance) (indistinct shouts) Malcolm! -Malcolm! -Dad? FOSTER: I can't see Carver! -(door opens) -(shouting in distance) (men yelling in distance) (apes grunting and growling) (clattering) (ape grunting, huffing) -(grunting) -(Ellie panting) CARVER (pained grunting): Don't! -ELLIE: Leave it there. -I got it. ELLIE: It's not broken. Okay, let go. Let go. Good. Thank you. You saved our lives. We've got a lot of debris to clear now. We might need a bit more time. (grunts) (baby ape squeaking) (squeaky grunts) Oh. Uh... (laughs): Oh, my. (baby ape squeaking) (laughs softly) -(squeaky chatter) -(laughs) ALEXANDER: Hey, buddy. (Ellie laughs) (squeaky chatter) -Hey. Hey, what are you doing? -(laughs) You finished? What are you looking at? (chuckles softly) (baby ape squeaking) Hey! Hey! (indistinct shouts) (screeches) Hey! FOSTER: Carver, what're you doing? I'll kill you! (hisses) MALCOLM: Don't! Don't, Caesar! No! No. Said... no... -No. Don't. -MALCOLM: Please. (panting) (gun splashes into water) I didn't know. Human leave now! (apes grunting, hooting) (ape hooting excitedly) (panting) (hoots, grunts) (Cornelia groaning) Man, we screwed now. Malcolm? Malcolm, where are you going? Malcolm. (wheezing, groaning weakly) (apes hooting, screeching in distance) Please, please, I just need to speak to him. I'm sorry. That was all my fault, but I will make him leave. -This... my home. You should not be here. I understand. Malcolm... (Cornelia wheezing) (continues wheezing) She's sick. How long has she been this way? (Cornelia snoring, wheezing) (Cornelia groans weakly) I have medicine. Antibiotics. Maybe she can help. Do... not trust you. I don't blame you. But believe me, we are not all like him. ELLIE: Please... let us help you. (weak, wheezing breaths) (wheezing breaths continue) One day. You stay... one day. We might need a little more time. One day! (apes hooting) Ape will help. -This is bullshit, man! -Get him out of here. Move! That's enough! Come on! Get out of here! Come on, man. You got us all messing up. (distant): Don't play with me. Okay? Get on! Move! Come on, get...! I'm sick of you... here! Get in! (panting) See you tomorrow, asshole. (horses neighing) Yo, Alex. This relay's busted. See if there's another one. (ape huffing) (snarls) (grunts) Caesar... (grunts) (breathy grunting) (forceful grunt) Hey! (snarling) No! No, no, no, no, don't! No, no, no! (snarling) (deep growling) Where Caesar? Want Caesar. Caesar! (apes grunting) (deep growling) (raspy panting) Humans attack your sons. You let them stay! Put apes in danger! Caesar love humans more than apes. More than your sons! (grunting) (roaring) (apes hooting) (deep hooting) -(shouting) -(grunting) (Caesar screams) (Caesar hisses) (huffing) (gasping) Ape... shall not... kill... ape. (gasping) (huffs, grunts) Forgive me. (men laughing) Hey... -Whoa, whoa, whoa. -Hey, hey, hey, hey. I think he likes you. (laughing): Shut up. All right, all right. Oh, you want a drink, fugly? (Terry laughs) Go on, give him some. Give him some, man. See what happens. (laughs) (men laughing) There you go-- whoa, hey! -Whoa, hey, hey! -Okay, okay, okay. -No, take it easy. -Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, hey! -Whoa! -McVEIGH: Shit! (laughing) -(laughing) -(hooting) -That was good, huh? -Yeah, yeah, yeah... -That was good! -Whoa! -Hey, hey, hey! Hey! Okay, all right... -TERRY: Easy... -McVEIGH: Yeah... -Easy, easy... (laughs) -Easy... Hey... (gasping anxiously) (grunts, huffs) (grunting with effort) (distant rumbling) Malcolm! Malcolm! What? What is it? What happened? (horse huffs, approaches slowly) (horse sputters) (song playing over speakers) (exhales) -(song continues) -(Ellie gasps softly) (chuckles quietly) (laughing loudly) Hey, yeah! It worked. At least here it did. We'll know when we get back to the city. -(song continues) -(Caesar sighs) Trust. (apes screeching in distance) (Foster gasping) (apes screeching, grunting) (laughs softly) (computer beeps) (cheering, shouting in distance) (sighs) (sniffles) (laughs) (crying quietly) (suppressed sobs) (lively chatter, whooping) MAN: This is San Francisco attempting contact. If anyone is receiving this message, we ask that you identify yourself and your location. Over. (man screaming) If you are receiving this signal, please state your location. Over. Repeat. This is San Francisco attempting to establish contact. If you are receiving this signal, please state your identity and your location. Over. -What is it? -The apes attacked the armoury, sir. Sound the alarm! Sound the alarm! (clamouring) Everybody move! (grunting, screeching) (panting) (low grunt) (louder grunt) (clamouring) Keep them off the walls! Keep them off the walls! MAN: Let's go! Get in position! -You ready? -Yeah. Good. DREYFUS: Listen to me. We... are survivors. Now, they may have got their hands on some of our guns, but that does not make them men. They are animals! We will push them back! Drive them down! And they will not... get... through these doors! (fierce yell) (ape screeching) (quiet panting) (inhales) There! California Street! (bullets striking) -Down! Get down! -(grunting) (fierce, sustained yell) (neighing) (grunting) (distorted, echoing grunt) (distorted, echoing panting) (echoing shouts) (muted gunfire) (muted screeching) (distorted, echoed shouts) (missile whistling through air) -(explosion) -(panting, grunting) (grunting) (grunting) (screeches) (fierce yell) -(gunfire continues) -(growling) (fierce yelling) (excited grunting) (men grunting) Bring me the rocket launcher! (screeching) (clamouring, screeching) (clamouring) (indistinct shouts continue) (birds chirping) (low grunting, panting) We must be getting close. MALCOLM: I think I see it. It's down here. (Alexander panting) Dad! (whispers): Oh, my God. Malcolm! MALCOLM: Ellie, help me. Come on. My... son... My... f-family. Where? (panting) I don't know. (exhales) Try not to speak. You need to rest. (breathing weakly) Hold. -He's lost a lot of blood. -Is he gonna make it? I don't understand. Where did Carter get the gun? Why would he do this? CAESAR: Ape... What? Ape... did... this. Get in the truck. (people shouting, screaming) (clamour continues) (panicked shouts) (grunting) (roars) (panting) Kill him. MAN: No. No, no, no, no. No... MAN: No, no. (fierce grunting) (hooting, screeching) (grunting, screeching) (grunting) (screeching) (thud) (panting) Caesar... gone. Apes... follow... Koba now. (panicked shouts) (panicked shouts, gasps) MAN: Get off me! ELLIE: Oh, my God, look-- the colony's on fire. ALEXANDER: Where are we gonna go? (Caesar grunts) ELLIE: Caesar, what?
