There was noise in the hayloft. But the dogs didn't wake up. The noise woke up other animals. Some animals went back to sleep. Some animals were angry. Some animals were upset. But the animals in the hayloft were happy. The farm cat had given birth to her first kittens! She wanted to be a good mother. Mother Cat did not want to yell. But Milo was a naughty kitten. Milo walked to the edge of the hayloft. Milo's mother yelled, "Come back here, Milo!" Otis was the first animal that Milo saw. Otis was a puppy. "Are you a cat?" Milo asked. "I'm a dog," Otis said. Milo said, "I think you are a cat." "No!" Otis barked. "I am a dog!" Otis said. Milo and Otis became best friends. Soon, a new day started for Milo. The rooster crows. The kittens were big enough to leave the barn. Milo got into trouble. He was the first kitten to cry for food. (Milo meows.) Mother yelled, "Milo, finish your breakfast!" Milo thought his mother yelled a lot. Mother yelled, "Milo! Don't walk on the chickens!" "Listen carefully," Mother said. "This is the dock. That is the river," she said. Mother said, "Never go in the river." Milo did not listen. Milo fell in the river! "Come back here!" Mother said. The river swept Milo away. Mother went after him. Mother said, "Kittens, behave yourselves!" "Milo! I'm coming!" she said. Mother said, "Milo, are you alright?" "Yes," Milo meowed. "Follow me back," said Mother. "I will try," said Milo. "Be careful," Mother said. She began to swim. Milo said, "Alright." (Milo meows.) Mother said, "I am glad you are safe." Mother showed Milo how to dry himself. Milo said, "That was fun!" Mother yelled, "Come here!" The months passed. Soon it was summer. Milo and Otis grew big enough to play by themselves. Milo found new places to hide. Otis looked for Milo. "You are hiding in the pipe, Milo!" Otis said. Milo tried to hide in another spot. "You are hiding in the boot!" said Otis. Milo looked for other places to hide. Milo could not trick Otis! Otis could always find Milo. Milo tried another place. Otis found Milo there, too! Milo needed a good idea. Milo found a very good place to hide. Otis did not find him. But Milo got very dirty! The chickens cluck. The next day, the hens were upset. Milo and Otis went to see why the hens were upset. One chicken said, "Everybody must go outside." All of the hens left quickly. Gloria was the chicken who told everybody to go. Gloria was an important hen. She wanted to be alone. "There's my first egg!" Gloria clucked. "Otis, look after my egg!" she said. Otis looked after the egg very well. "Gloria has had her egg," the chickens clucked. "I will kick it back, Otis," Milo said. "I kicked it by accident," said Otis. "Leave it alone!" Otis said. "Gloria gave us a job to do," Otis said. Milo wanted to leave. Otis said, "We shall wait for Gloria." "I have become a watchdog. I will watch this egg," said Otis. Some animals thought it was strange for a dog and cat to watch an egg. Some animals came to look at Milo and Otis. Milo heard strange noises outside. What was going on? Some birds sing. "Stop doing that!" Milo said. The bird just ignored him. "Hey!" Milo said. "You sing badly. Stop it!" Milo said. "Hello in there!" Milo said. "Otis, come here," a frog croaked. "What is wrong?" Otis said. "Milo is making everyone unhappy," the frog said. The frog was right. Milo was teasing a crab. The crab pinched Milo's whiskers. (Milo cries in pain.) "Milo deserved that," the frog croaked. "He did not!" Otis said. You have to watch an egg all the time. Milo and Otis suddenly remembered the egg! "The egg!" they said. "Stop!" Otis barked. "Don't touch that egg!" Otis said. "Go away!" Otis said. Otis growled! "I did not touch your egg," the hedgehog said. The hedgehog walked away. Milo wanted to look again at that strange animal. (Milo meows.) (Otis barks.) (Milo meows loudly.) Some kittens heard the noise. Something was happening to the egg! "We are having a baby, Milo!" Otis said. The chick dried itself and looked at Otis. "Mummy! Mummy! Mummy!" it cheeped. "I'm not your mummy!" Otis said. Otis took the chick to Gloria. But the chick came back! The frog laughed. "I'm not your mummy!" Otis told the chick. "You are a chicken, not a dog!" said Otis. "Woof," the chick peeped. "Woof, woof, Mummy." They tried to make the mixed-up chick join the other chickens. "OK," said Otis. "To be a dog, you must be rough like me," Otis said. The chick did not like that. "It's your turn to play," Otis said. "Chicken Mummy!" the chick peeped. The chick ran to Gloria. "I will miss the chick," said Otis. "Where are we going?" Otis asked. "To the river," said Milo. "Come to the dock," Milo said. "Come on!" Otis knew there would be trouble. "Can we eat this thing?" Milo asked Otis. "I would not eat it," Otis said. Otis kept on walking. And then it happened! (Otis cries in pain.) Otis dried himself. Otis went back to the dock. Milo had found a very good place to hide. Otis would not find him now! "Surprise!" Milo shouted. "I tricked you!" Milo said. "Look out!" said Otis. Then something happened! "Jump in! It's fun!" said Milo. "Come on, Otis. Come with me!" Milo shouted. Otis was very scared. Otis had to rescue Milo. Otis followed Milo. Milo was getting away. Otis saw a bridge. Otis would jump off the bridge into the box. It was too late! How would Otis catch up with Milo? But that did not work, either. Otis could not swim fast enough. The river took Milo farther downstream. (Milo meows.) Milo could not see Otis any more. He heard a noise. Was it Otis? No! Milo hoped the bear would not see him. The box drifted over to the bear! "That was close," said Milo. But the bear saw Milo in the box! Here is Otis! Otis knew what to do. Otis said, "That bear is much bigger than me!" Otis had a better plan. Otis got out of the water. The bear followed Otis. The bear forgot all about Milo! Milo drifted along. Milo was worried. The river was moving faster! The river moved faster and faster. (Milo meows.) Milo was alright. But he did not know where Otis was. Milo drifted farther and farther away. Soon the moon was in the sky. The river took Milo through a forest. He saw eyes shining in the trees. Milo heard strange hoots and growls and cries. This trip was not fun any more. Milo was lonely and frightened. He wished he had never jumped into the box. Milo wished he was home. Milo saw the moon's reflection in the water. The reflection trembled. Milo trembled too. It was too cold for Milo to sleep. Milo drifted along. The night was dark. Milo wanted the morning to come. It was morning! Milo saw a farm. At first, he thought he was home! Milo looked again. Milo didn't know those cows. Milo was far away from his farm. Otis had not forgotten Milo! He was running along the river bank! Otis sang a dog marching song. (Sings) # Dogs are brave! # Here comes the dog... # No! Otis decided to stop singing. Otis followed the river. He came to a frightening place. Otis had never seen the Deadwood Swamp before. The trees looked like long bones. Only the horrible Deadwood Birds could live here. One bird was sitting on Milo's box! "Watch out, bird," Otis barked. "There's the box. Where's the cat?" "Poor cat," said the bird. Otis looked in the box. He saw one black feather. The bird laughed and flew away. Milo's box stopped at the Deadwood Swamp. Milo ran away from the birds. He was in a burning valley. The ground was hot and there was smoke. xMilo came to a meadow. He saw an interesting animal. Milo felt hungry. Milo knew he could not eat this animal. He thought, "The animal might give me some food." "Is someone there?" the fox called. Milo hid from the fox. "It is time for lunch," said the fox. "Good!" thought Milo. Milo followed the fox. Milo wanted some food. "I must be careful," Milo thought. "I must hide and be quiet," he thought. "I put it here," Fox said. "There it is!" Milo became hungrier. The fox had a juicy muskrat. The fox turned. "Who's there?" he said. "I must hide this lovely meal," said Fox. He buried his lunch. "My muskrat will be safe until dinner," Fox said. Milo crept down the tree. The fox ran over the hill. Milo knew how to get a nice muskrat lunch. Thunder cracks. Otis had travelled a long way. Otis found a beach with clams. How could Otis ask a clam for help? Otis remembered the magic word - PLEASE. Otis said, "Excuse me, please?" Otis had a bigger problem than rude clams. The clouds were getting darker. A cold wind blew everywhere. Milo was far from the beach. It rained on Milo too. Milo got wet. Milo felt lonely without Otis. But Milo was safe. At the beach, Otis was not safe. The tide came in fast. Otis was surrounded by water. The rock would soon be underwater. Otis could not swim to the beach. The water grew higher. The water covered his paws. Otis had to swim! Otis got ready. He nearly dived in. "Not again," said Turtle. "Every time the water rises, an animal gets stuck," he said. Otis didn't understand the turtle. "Can I help you?" asked Turtle. "I'm saving you," said Turtle. "Are you?" Otis said. "Yes. Get on!" said Turtle. "Stay here on the beach," said Turtle. "Thanks for saving me," said Otis. "I often have to save somebody," said Turtle. "You saved my life," said Otis. "I save someone every month," said Turtle. "I didn't know that," said Otis. Turtle said, "Well, now you know." "I must go back to the sea," said Turtle. The sky was bright. Otis went on looking for Milo. Otis saw an animal that might help him. (The animal sings happily.) "That's better!" said Fox. "I'm looking for my friend," Otis said. "Will you play with me?" Fox asked. "I'm busy," Otis said. "What kind of animal are you?" asked Fox. "A dog," Otis said. "Where's your tail?" asked Fox. Otis said angrily, "Here!" "Ha! Here's a real tail!" said Fox. The fox jumped away and laughed. Milo was far away. Milo found a road. The road looked safe. Milo liked this road. Milo decided to follow the road. But then... Milo had ducked just in time. "What was that?" he thought. "I was lucky!" Milo said. Milo decided to follow this road of wood and iron. Milo would avoid those noisy animals. The iron road led Milo to a meadow of wild cotton blossoms. Now Milo was very tired. Milo wanted a place to rest. Maybe someone could help him. "You look tired," a deer said. "Bound with me through the fields," said the deer. "Cats don't know how to bound," Milo said. "You can do it - bound and leap," said the deer. "Bound and leap," she said. "I can't bound," said Milo. "Frolic with me," said the deer. "Look at me! I'm frolicking!" said Milo. "Stop frolicking now," the deer said. She showed Milo to the cool water in the forest pool. "I'm tired," Milo said. "Yes, you frolicked too much," the deer said. "Let's rest over here," said the deer. The deer took Milo to a soft, mossy spot. Milo was asleep straight away. Otis knew he could find Milo. Otis had crossed the swamp and the fox's meadow. He would find Milo soon. Otis missed Milo. But now, it was the end of a long day of hard travelling. (Otis cries.) Night time was coming. Milo thought he could sleep safely in a tree. Milo watched the sunset. Milo wondered what creatures would be awake at night. A strange bird said, "Are you hiding from screech-owls?" Milo said, "I'm sorry. Is this your nest?" "Yes, this is my dreaming-nest," said Bird. "What is a dreaming nest?" asked Otis. "If you sleep there, you have many dreams," said Bird. "But it's safe from screech-owls," said Bird. "Sleep and have some dreams," said Bird. "They may be sad, scary or beautiful," he said. "But if you sleep in that nest, you will dream," said Bird. Milo's dreams began as he fell asleep. First, Milo dreamt he was back on the farm. Milo saw some old friends. Milo dreamt of when his mother left him with the cow. Then Milo had a sad dream. Milo dreamt he was playing with Otis. Would he ever play with Otis again? Would Milo see Otis again? The dream seemed real. Milo thought he heard Otis's voice. A little animal cries. But it wasn't Otis's voice. It was a cry for help from the ground. Milo woke up. He forgot the screech-owls and climbed down towards the cry. Milo hid. Milo was scared, but he followed the cries for help. "Help!" cried Pig. "Please, help me!" he said. "My leg is caught!" Pig said. "That bird will come back," said Pig. "Don't be scared," said Milo. Milo released the pig's foot. "Do you know somewhere safe?" Milo said. "Come with me!" said Pig. Pig's family squealed with joy when he returned. Pig said, "Mum, here comes the cat! "This cat saved me," said Pig. "This cat saved me," said Pig. The pigs gave Milo a place to sleep. Next morning, Milo thought, "These pigs are nice." "They are friendly," he thought. Then, the mother pig said, "Breakfast!" Milo was surprised when he saw this family's table manners. The meal was too messy for Milo. But that was how this family ate their meals. Milo said goodbye to his friend. Milo licked the breakfast off Pig's face. Milo said, "Keep your face clean." Milo thought about the pig family. Milo thought, "No wonder they are called pigs." Milo travelled for a day. Then he arrived at a brook. Some delicious trout swam in the water. Milo thought of how to catch a trout. "That cat is silly," said a raccoon. But all at once, Milo caught one! The raccoon wanted it. "Nice fish. I will take it away," the raccoon said. But someone else was also interested in Milo's fish. They fought over the trout. Then the bear saw something tastier. A cat! Milo could not fight on the ground. But perhaps Milo could win in the air. Milo was safe. But Milo lost his lunch. He looked for some nice seagull eggs. A seagull screamed, "A cat is near the babies!" The birds called out, "Cat! Cat! Get him away from the nests!" Seagulls pecked and hurt Milo. Milo had to escape! "I only wanted some lunch," Milo thought. "I don't like seagull eggs, anyway," said Milo. Milo felt salty, wet and cold. He looked messy. A shack was nearby. The shack looked warm and safe. But Milo did not know who lived there. Milo's fur was drying off. He felt safe at last. But then he looked outside. "Stay calm," Milo thought. "He won't come here...No!" Milo tried to hide. But the bear smelt him. Milo tried to trick this bear. "Come and get me!" Milo said. Milo hid. The bear tried to eat Milo. "Up here!" Milo yelled. "Reach in and grab me!" he said. "Too late!" said Milo. "Hey, down here!" yelled Milo. "Come in here," said Milo. "I'll help you!" said Milo. "Which drawer has the cat?" said Milo. "Here's a clue!" Milo said. The bear was angry. He was sick of being tricked. The bear tried to pull everything apart. It looked bad, but Milo jumped on top. Milo could feel the bear's claws. At the last moment... "I hit the bear!" Milo said. The bear left the shack. The bear was dazed. Milo thought the tree would be safe. Milo was wrong again. (Milo meows.) (Milo meows.) Milo could not climb out of the pit. Milo thought that nobody would hear him calling. Milo thought that nobody would hear him calling. But someone did hear Milo. Milo was very happy to see Otis. Otis said, "Don't worry, I'll get you out." "Did you try to climb out?" Otis asked. "It's too deep," Milo said. "I have an idea," Otis said. "Climb it!" Otis shouted. "It's too short," said Milo. "Don't worry, I have another idea," Otis said. "Grab the end!" Otis shouted. Otis opened his mouth. He shouted, "We did it!" "Hold on," Otis said, with his teeth together. "Are you alright?" Otis asked. "I have been attacked by bears, snakes and seagulls," Milo said. Now they were happy to be back together. "Listen! What was that?" Otis said. They heard a cat crying. Hello, I'm Joyce. Joyce? Joyce! Joyce and Milo seemed to be very friendly. Otis thought that they looked stupid. "Joyce, come back to my farm," said Milo. "I have never lived on a farm," said Joyce. "You will love it. I love you," said Milo. Joyce said yes, and they all set off for the farm. Milo thought that they should follow the river back home. Joyce knew where the river was. Joyce led the way. "Do you know where we are going? I don't see any rivers," Otis said. "Trust me," said Joyce. "Come on, Otis!" Milo called out. "Otis, where are you?" Milo shouted. Joyce asked Milo, "Is Otis your friend?" They came to a river. They walked beside the river. "This is the right river!" Milo called out. "Otis!" Milo shouted. Otis was not happy about the journey. Milo was always with Joyce. Milo never talked to Otis. "You two follow the river," Otis said. "I'm going over the mountains by myself." "Stay with us, Otis," said Joyce. "Where are you going?" asked Milo. Otis did not answer. He just ran. A few days later, a snowstorm stopped the journey. Travelling in the snow was dangerous. Milo and Joyce had to shelter in the woods until spring. Milo and Joyce made a home in a tree trunk. Otis walked through the snow. That afternoon, the winter sun melted the snow. Snow fell down from the trees. Otis was alright, but he heard a call for help. A dog barks. A dog barks. Otis walked towards the voice in the woods. A dog cries. "Where are you?" Otis shouted. "Over here," a dog said. "I can't dig through the snow." Otis was angry. Then he saw the dog. "I'm Sandra," she said. Otis had never met a dog like Sandra. "Sandra is a French name," she said. Otis began to act very silly. Otis now understood what had made Milo act silly. Otis and Sandra played in the snow. They saw other animals. Sandra lived in a small cave. Sandra and Otis decided to stay in the cave until spring. They kept each other warm. Near the end of the winter, Joyce was getting herself ready. Something was about to happen. Milo asked, "Do you want to eat dinner?" "No, Milo, I am busy," Joyce said. Milo said, "Remember the way to breathe." (Joyce breathes deeply.) "I hope that is a kitten," thought Milo. "It's a girl kitten!" said Milo. "There will be more," said Joyce. That same day, not far away, Otis was in his cave with Sandra. Otis was waiting for Sandra to have puppies. "They are coming," Sandra said. "Here is Otis junior!" said Otis. "I'm a father! I'm a father!" "It's a boy!" said Otis. "Otis, come back!" said Sandra. "It's a litter!" said Otis. Milo watched the kittens get bigger every day. The puppies also grew. Sandra said, "I gave them all French names." "This is Jean-Pierre, that is Francois and this is Suzette." One of the kittens looked just like Milo. Milo thought that the kitten would cause trouble. Milo remembered when he was a little kitten. The weather was still cold. Otis and Sandra had a problem. They did not have enough food. Otis had to go and find some food. He went to a pond to try to catch some fish. The cold weather had frozen over the fishing hole. The fish were frozen in ice. A winter storm was on its way. Otis was not safe. His paws were numb from the cold. He had to rest. Otis was almost frozen. He stopped in the snow. Otis thought about Sandra and the puppies. They were waiting for Otis in the cave. What would happen to them if he never returned? Otis felt much stronger. Otis had to get back home to Sandra and the puppies. The storm ended, but Otis was lost. Then Otis saw something. Otis barked because he was hungry. Otis saw a friendly face upstairs. "You look hungry. How about some fish?" asked Milo. "Yes, for my puppies," said Otis. "I have puppies too!" said Milo. "I mean kittens!" said Milo. How could Otis reach the fish for his family? Milo had a plan. "Otis, I really miss you," said Milo. Milo and Otis decided to meet in the spring with their families. Spring was just about to start. On the first warm day, Milo brought his family outside. They waited for Otis. Otis tried to organise his puppies. All the animals in the countryside were bringing their children out. The fox had a cub and so did the raccoon. The deer was playing with her fawn. Milo and Joyce had their kittens. Otis arrived and the two families met for the first time. At first, the families were a little bit shy. Then Otis and the puppies ran to meet the kittens. "This is your Uncle Milo," Otis said to his puppies. The puppies and kittens got to know each other. "You're a strange dog!" said a pup. "We are cats!" said Milo junior. Otis shouted, "Hey! Everyone be quiet!" Milo and Otis led the two families down the road. The road went to the place where their lives had started. The road took them home.
