1 In a world where most of us put ourselves first, one community is bucking the trend. On NZ's isolated West Coast is a place where everyone works hard and no one gets paid while they wait for the world to end. They call it Gloriavale. Copyright Able 2015 Nestled beside Lake Haupiri, the Gloriavale Christian Community's a very private address. To live here, you must be born into it or be invited to join, but this lifestyle's not everyone's cup of tea, not by a long shot. The 530 residents here live by a strict interpretation of the Bible. Women live in subjection to their husbands, and the leaders make all the rules. Paul Valor, at 22, is now boss of his own small household, but it was quite a different story a couple of years ago, when he was a single guy looking for love. I want to marry a godly wife. The only really godly women I personally know are here. His parents both thought he was ready for marriage. He's going to be a dad in his own right. He's gonna s-start his own family. First stop was seeking permission and guidance from the leaders. They arrange all marriages with a unique mix of planning and prayer. God has got somebody specially prepared for you. I don't want to have my own will. I want to have what God wants me to have. Well, God knows best, doesn't he? The leaders, they have got lists of all bloodlines. And so when you come and ask them to get married, they can give you a list of, you know, five or six girls who you can marry without any problems, and they will all be within your age bracket. So, you know, that's what we call your shortlist. We believe that the Lord's will is for me to marry Pearl. (KNOCKS) I chose to love whoever God wanted me to marry, and... it's a decision you make. And it's not hard. It's... easy. After a five-week engagement, the first time a couple gets to touch or kiss is in front of 500 wedding guests. My darling, I promise that I will always put God first in my life. I will always obey the leaders, and I will lead you in the right ways. And I love you because of God's love, and I'm yours. HONK! HONK! The rest of the congregation prays for them while they consummate the marriage, and the prayers worked, apparently. She got pregnant not long after we got married. So, yeah, we're busy. Hopefully, in a year, the Lord will have come back, and we'll be in heaven. That'll be... That'll be great. But... if He hasn't, well, I'd like to have... have a child, still be happily married and be... working for the Lord down here on Earth. It's been two years since the wedding, and although the Lord hasn't paid a visit yet, some of Paul's prayers have been answered. They're now parents to a daughter, Esther. They don't use contraception here, so getting pregnant almost immediately wasn't unusual. In fact, every new baby's seen as a gift from God, and He's been generous to Paul's family this year. Pearl's expecting again, due in the summer, around the same time as Paul's mother, Purity, will have baby number 12. With each new generation, the community grows exponentially Take Rose and Steady Standtrue. At 82, Steady's one of the oldest residents and one of the leaders. How many grandchildren? Um... It's increased the last few weeks, hasn't it? The grandchildren or the great-grandchildren? Great. Great-grandchildren ` it's 56, I think. Or 57. 57. Yeah. After breakfast, it's a short walk for Paul and Pearl to take Esther back to their room in the communal hostels. This` This is Esther when she's grumpy. At the moment, she's just getting over the flu, and she's cutting a tooth, and this is what she's like when she's grumpy. Looks a bit grumpy. CHUCKLES) I think before Pearl got married, she was less comfortable with herself. Definitely more outgoing now. Less shy than she was before she was married. You can't really be reserved when you've got a kid like Esther. It doesn't work in a husband like me, admittedly. (CHUCKLES, SPEAKS INDISTINCTLY) At the meat-meal plant, Paul's working the day shift. He spends his days running giant ovens that bake and crush offal into pellets. A lot of it's exported overseas for pet food. It's a grind, quite literally, and on bad days, the smell's awful, but at least it's warm and dry inside. Pearl's off to work in the community's sewing room today, but first she's dropping Esther to the baby room just one floor below. She's a really happy girl. Yeah. Yeah, she's really nice. I think she's a lot like Paul. When Esther moves on to preschool she might find herself in a class taught by her grandmother, Anne. OK, well, you go and sit up now. # And God let the sun shine on... # Women do all the domestic jobs at Gloriavale ` the cooking, cleaning, and childcare, and most of the teaching for the younger children. At 82 years old, Rose Standtrue has no retirement plans. As a trained teacher, she still spends mornings helping kids with their maths problems. This classroom's a bit cramped, but all that is about to change. The snow and sleet are starting to bite just as two cranes arrive at Gloriavale to start construction on the new school. They've been planning and saving to build it for seven years, and just like everything else here, they'll do it themselves. SERENE MUSIC So it's on with the high-vis vests and all hands to the hammer to put together this kitset design imported from the Czech Republic. This is the biggest new building to go up on the West Coast in about a decade, and they'll need it. With more than 150 kids enrolled at the Gloriavale school, they expect that number to almost double in the next 10 years. The freezing temperatures make work tough, so when Dove Love and the other single girls arrive with a hot lunch, it's time to down tools. Because the builders have been so busy trying to get the school built, we've just been bringing some of the meals out to them. For lunch, we're having whole garlic potatoes, rissoles, cabbage and mashed pumpkin with gravy. This morning, Steady Standtrue's come by to check progress. Much different to the original concept... (CHUCKLES) because of our growth in the years. I think it was about... It was about 2008 that we were first drawing and planning this. In my day, it was all scaffolding... pipe scaffolding and planks. Now they're able to utilise again new technology that make it so much easier to get the materials into position. For the last 40 years, Steady Standtrue's led the community's building projects, from the early days at Springbank right through to the hostels and rotary dairy on the Gloriavale site. He's trained many of the younger guys, and some of his grandsons are working on the new school. But Steady's health is failing, and he may not get to see lessons start here. He's dying by degrees, and it doesn't seem to bother him. He's happy. Death isn't something to be feared for us. Death is something that... It's just the only way to get to heaven, really. You either die or the Lord comes back. The battle's almost finished, and now he's gonna get his reward. SERENE MUSIC It's springtime at Gloriavale, and calving's in full swing. Dairying is their big earner here. Taking care of mums and babies is a priority on both sides of the fence. Hello. Pearl's booked in with one of the community's two midwives for a check-up. So, how you`? Have you been feeling? Is it OK if I just take your blood pressure? 'I have just done a degree course, and I've had 12 children of my own, 'so you can say I have some experience.' See that? Pretty cool, isn't it? Yeah, pink. Yeah. (WHIMPERS) It's OK. It's OK. With 30 to 40 babies born each year, Gloriavale's set up its own birthing suite in one of the hostels. Pearl had Esther there and hopes Harmony Helpful will help deliver her next baby too. That's perfect. I had already known her all my life, growing up, so she was a friend already, and that was good. Um, got some results... from a blood test here. I'll just show them to you. Pearl's got a clean bill of health, but Steady Standtrue's having trouble walking. He's finding some consolation in a new set of wheels. It has freed me and given me back a... a bit of independence... (CHUCKLES) that a man of 82 likes to still retain. As one of the leaders, he's used to being in charge, but this thing's got a mind of its own. Upsy-daisy. Oh no. Whoops. I'm not yet an experienced wheelchair driver, but I'm learning. I'll give you this. Would you mind... just putting that behind? Behind the door there? Thank you. Thank you. Thank you, son. Good. Now we'll be right. I'm no longer dependent on someone to get my arm and walk me. It's just given me a wonderful mobility. For senior citizens at Gloriavale, old age is not a daunting prospect. I don't have to... worry about a thing. We've never gone on to superannuation or pensions. Um, everything that we need is... has been provided. It is very lovely to be growing old where there is a lot of life and activity. Oh, he's coming! Hello. Where have you been, children? How are you tonight? You've come to show me your babies? They're very nice, aren't they? Have you given them names? Nah. You haven't? It's very lovely of you to come and see me tonight. Do you want to sing me a song? ALL SING: # When I die, # hallelujah, by and by, # I'll fly away... # I think I might be the first one of you all to fly away to the Lord because I'm older than all of you, aren't I? Your eyes are all puffy. GIRL: And it has water coming out of them. Is it? GIRL: Yep. Oh, we'll have to wipe them. GIRL: There's water... Uh, there's water coming out. It's not because I am sad. It's because I'm glad and happy. GIRL: There's water coming out of you. Steady knows his death is close now, and so does Rose. Although it's very pleasant here in the community, be much better in heaven. There won't be any physical problems there and... n-no worries about anything. (CHUCKLES) THUNDER GROWLS And as the spring rains sweep in, word quickly spreads Steady is slipping away. In the morning, I was working in the kitchen with my team, and we had word that Steady was pretty close. So we all went over, and we wanted to say goodbye, and we walked past him, and we gave him a kiss. We all said goodbye, and then I gave Rosie ` Rose, his wife ` gave her a cuddle, and she was just radiant with joy, knowing he was so close to the end. ALL SING: # ...fills the air for the King of Kings... And I found out an hour or two later that he had gone to be with the Lord, and praise God. You know, finally he's out of his suffering. ALL SING MELODICALLY # I'm just going home. # SERENE MUSIC When someone passes away at Gloriavale, no one calls a funeral director. They can handle everything themselves. Noah Hopeful gets cracking on the coffin. It's our last opportunity to do something practical for Steady. I've got Judah helping me today. Our brother Steady left with a... a lovely example for our young people to aspire to. If I could do that in my life, I'd be very happy. I'd feel that my life will have been worth something. Earlier in the day, the family washed and dressed Steady's body and placed it in a spare chiller. Everything is simple and practical, like the MDF coffin, spray-painted white. We're preparing lunch for tomorrow, after the burial service. About 530 people tomorrow for the meal, and we're having a ham and salad meal. That's quick to prepare, and we can have it all ready before we have to go down to the burial. He'll be buried down in our community plot, where we've got some other people that have died in times past. With only nine graves in quite a spacious cemetery, there's plenty of room for future additions. The younger boys have been asked to spruce the place up a bit before Steady's send-off. SLOW JAUNTY MUSIC MUSIC CONTINUES There'll be no grave-digging till the rain eases off, but warm and dry in the sewing room, Pilgrim Overcomer and True Ben-Canaan are fitting a lining into bottom of the box. Dove is taking care of the lid. I'm working... I'm putting the lettering on Steady's coffin. Rose wrote a poem, and the last verse is what has been chosen to put on his coffin. REFLECTIVE MUSIC With a little break in the weather, Steady's grandson Ready Standtrue is marking out the plot. For a DIY funeral, having a 3-ton digger in the garage is a handy standby. The cemetery's part of an ancient creek bed, and the gravelly soil makes digging a deep grave quite tricky. Too much rain, and the sides of the hole will collapse, which could delay the burial for days. So Ready, true to his name, is dropping a frame in to hopefully stop an overnight cave-in. Now they just need to pray for some sunshine. To live here, you must be born into it or be invited to join, 1 ALL SING: # Someday when... # On the morning of Steady's funeral, Gloriavale sees the first fine day in a week. Shortly before the service, Steady's grandsons bring his body from the cold store, wrapped in a simple cotton shroud. There's no embalming and no funeral director running the show here. Then it's time to stop work and change into best clothes. Everyone comes together as the young people's choir opens the service. # Lead me to the beautiful land, # where the glory of God is alive. # Is alive. Like most funerals, this is where they'll share memories of Steady's life and his achievements. Their sadness at his missing is tempered by a confidence that he's now in heaven, somewhere they soon hope to be. I would like to give honour to Steady today for his life. He lived so unselfishly. Steady... (SNIFFLES) spent a lot of time coming and visiting me and reading to me, and I look forward to the day the Lord does take us. Every day, he shone forth the light of Christ, and I'm so grateful that I have that godly heri-heritage and that I can pass that on to my children. > Steady completely gave himself physically until he had no strength left to give. # Where the glory of God... Steady's grandsons will be some of the pall-bearers. There's be no hearse here today. The young men have decided they want to walk Steady down, taking turns to carry his coffin on this final journey to the grave. # The King of Kings is waiting to welcome me there... # # Oh, may all who come behind us # find us faithful. # May the fire of our devotion # light their way. # May the footprints that we leave # lead them to believe # and the lives we live inspire them to obey. # Oh, may all who come behind us # find us faithful. # May the fire of our devotion # light their way. # May the footprints that we leave # lead them to believe # and the lives we live inspire them to obey. # Oh, may all who come behind us # find us faithful. # Oh, may all who come behind us find us faithful. # Mmm... # For children growing up in this Bible-based community, the promise of heaven and the fear of hell are daily companions. Children are taught from an early age that God is always watching and that obedience to their parents and the leaders, as well as making sacrifices for the community, are essential if they hope to follow Steady's example. So it's not surprising that, when the coffin disappears, they're all keen to see where Steady's body will be resting. ALL SING: # We shall meet on that beautiful shore. # Lord, we've come to lay this body to rest, waiting for that great day ` the day of the resurrection. Lord, when all the bodies that are in this grave will rise. MAN: Amen! There'll be a shaking down round here. MAN: Amen! Praise God! You see these graves will shake. What will happen? A new body will rise out of these graves. The spirit that has been saved and been with the Lord will descend into these bodies. And, then, brethren, suddenly we'll be saved. Amen! And, brethren, then we'll rise. They'll go first, and we'll go after them. Praise God! ALL: Amen. So it doesn't matter when we go it, does it? It matters where we go. ALL: Amen. Praise God. Young ones, live for Christ. Give your whole life to Christ. Accept and settle for nothing else, because He will satisfy you. And everybody said? ALL: Amen! All right. Thanks, folks. There's nothing more we can do here, but we wait for the day of the Lord. Amen? ALL MURMUR PAUL: I think we'll all miss Steady. He's been a great... man around the place. (CHUCKLES) Uh, there's actually... two ways to leave here. There's the way that Steady left us, when he went to glory. So, to us, it's just a temporary thing. The other way that people can leave us is when they walk out. They decide that this place isn't the place for them, and so they go. And... when people do that, to us, that's a much more permanent loss. They have left something behind that is a treasure. We grieve for them too, but it's a different type of grief because, well, we'll probably never see them again. That's the end of it as far as we're concerned. Um, they can live their life, and we... will just live our life. That's the way things are. I believe that the truth is here. When people leave here, they're leaving the truth behind. REFLECTIVE MUSIC To lift the spirits after the loss of Steady and to welcome the brilliant start to the West Coast summer, it's celebration day at Gloriavale. Time to eat as much candy floss as you can at your very own village fair. Following teachings in the New Testament, the community doesn't observe any special days, so things like Christmas, Easter and birthdays are out. Instead they set aside a day every now and then to cut loose and have some fun. SLOW JAUNTY MUSIC CHEERING, LAUGHTER Back at work, Dove Love is on laundry duty and grateful for any assistance from above. The sunny weather's such a blessing. It really helps us get through it. (SPEAKS INDISTINCTLY, CHUCKLES) This is my team here, doing the washing today, and we have a lot of washing to do because it's so many people. So we've got various ways of... um, speeding up the process. So, this is one way we use. The family will put their washing, their underwear, in a bag. Then we will empty it into a small machine and wash it, put it back in a bag. Then we'll hang it out on the line, and then when it's dry, we'll take it off, and it'll go back into the bag. I found this way really speeds up ` not having to look at every single item of clothing to see the names on them. But it's still a lot of washing. If you think that each person could have 10 items of clothing, even if we're only doing 20 families' washing, that's still a lot of washing to get through. And we'll take them around to the hostels, to their bedrooms, so the washing will end up outside their room. Instead of every family living in a separate house at Gloriavale, everybody lives in one of the four large hostels, and they've been built progressively on the Lake Haupiri site as the community's grown. So, in here, we have... This is one of eight floors. Each hostel has two floors that people will live on. And there's the main area in the middle, the lounge room, which is where... It's a communal area. All the families will come out here an-and play, meet, do whatever they're gonna do together out in the lounge room. And then we have the rooms, where a small family will have one room, just for them and the kids, and a big family might have two, um, depending on how many children they've got. And there's a kitchenette. That'll be for just, you know, like, getting suppers at home. Every so often, we'll have breakfast or tea at home as well. And each floor has... two men who are leading the people on this floor. There's a shepherd and a servant. Steady was one of the shepherds on the floor before he went to glory. We could do with that. ALL MURMUR Finding someone to replace Steady as shepherd is something the other leaders pray about. Everything in Gloriavale is decided by these men ` where you live, what job you'll do, right through to who'll you marry, and all that's guided by prayer. Heavenly Father, we come to you this morning. We ask you to lead and guide us, Lord. In all things, Lord, we want your will, Lord. Not our ideas. That you will lead and guide us. That you will build your church. That the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. In Jesus' name. ALL: Amen. It's been decided that Paul's father, Samuel, will replace Steady as the new shepherd. It's turning into quite a big summer for the Valor family. Paul's mum, Purity, is due to give birth to her 12th baby any day, and Pearl is due to have her second baby a week or so later. Paul plans to attend both births. I think I was actually 14, the first birth that I saw. Mum's first birth that I went to. She had seven kids by that stage. Dad was supportive, and so it gave me confidence to just get in and say, 'Well, what can I do to help?' Having Esther didn't really feel like a first baby, you know, except that it was my wife, which just made everything a little more intense rather than different. Two days later, Purity goes into labour and delivers a healthy baby boy. But, within 24 hours, there's trouble. His temperature rises sharply, and he's very unwell. After a lot of prayer, at 3am, they make the call to head into Greymouth. It's an hour-long drive down windy, dark roads, but the baby needs a doctor, and he needs it now. while they wait for the world to end. 1 At breakfast, the rest of the Valor family are on edge because there's no word yet from the hospital on how the new baby is. With Pearl due any day, Paul's just trying to stay calm and support his sisters while Samuel heads back into Greymouth this morning. REFLECTIVE MUSIC When... When the baby was first born, he was very calm. Uh, very relaxed. Uh, but over the first 24 hours, he started to get a temperature. Uh, and then when that temperature got up, um, to 39 degrees, we knew that there was something that was seriously wrong. That, um, his body wasn't handling it. Then it's time to go and get help. And we go to... uh, go to the doctors or the hospital to get that help, and, um` Yeah, have no problem with that at all. > The baby's been put on antibiotics for a suspected infection, but Samuel and Purity have been warned that if his condition deteriorates further, they'll need to be ready for an air-ambulance evacuation to Christchurch Hospital. Back at the community, summer is in full swing. SERENE MUSIC The sunshine's a real joy, but the worry around Purity's baby reminds Paul and Pearl just fragile life can be. We really like the way that we have home births, but if something did go wrong, it would be th-the father's decision on whether or not we had to go into hospital. You can't be foolish about that, so if was going to be something that would be life-threatening, or something went wrong, well, we'd just` We'd go into Greymouth Hospital. Just have a doctor there on call, so that if anything went wrong, he could handle it. Getting medical help when it's needed worked for Paul's mum, Purity. After two very long nights with her sick baby in the children's ward, today the news is a bit more positive. If his fever rose last night, they wanted to transfer him straight away. But it didn't, and so that was good. But, this morning, the paediatrician has spoken to Christchurch, and... they've said that he's... seems to be responding to the treatment, so... and hopefully he'll be allowed to come home in a couple of days' time,... (CHUCKLES) which will be really good. I think all the family are really missing him. (CHUCKLES) YELLING, GRUNTING It's Friday evening, Pearl's due date, and screams can be heard across the valley. Upstairs, they're, uh, having the film night, but we can't make it. My wife's starting to have her baby. She's just getting contractions now. Just little ones. So hopefully things are going to start happening soon. MAN YELLS ON TV I just came over to get supper. Take it home for her now. Paul's takeaways are home-made milkshakes and treats from the community kitchen. Tonight he'll miss a pirate movie, but this one's not set in the Caribbean. The leaders choose what films are family viewing, so anything with sex or bad language won't make the cut. Hornblower fits the bill tonight. I'm taking Esther home to bed because Pearl's in labour and Paul's with her. So I'm looking after their baby. And just as the pirate movie wraps up and everyone else heads off to bed for a good night's sleep, Paul's decided it's time to let Harmony Helpful, the midwife, know she'll be needed soon. Jordan's put Esther to bed and starts heating the wheat packs. There's going to be a baby tonight. And just after half past 11, Pearl and Paul make the short walk from their room to the community's birthing suite, on a hostel floor with other families sleeping nearby. The priority now is to keep Pearl as relaxed and comfortable as possible. PEARL: You just... trust God. It's a natural thing. It's not, like, a sickness or a disease. God's instigated it, and women have done it for hundreds of years, and not everyone has painkillers. (BREATHES HEAVILY) BOTH WHISPER INDISTINCTLY Jordan has filled the birthing pool so Pearl can get in when she's ready. HARMONY: Women tend to be proactive and seek out ways to help them with their pain relief. We use heat packs. We use water. We use showers. We use just all those natural things that help women have their babies. They've seen births before. Th-They realise that there's pain involved. OK, OK. Just have a listen to bubby. ULTRASOUND WARBLES We know that women can birth their babies themselves. Actually the midwife's there to... to notice whether something's not normal. PAUL: Everything` Everything is geared towards, yeah, making sure that this a happy, calm experience. That it's not something that we fear here. It's just a part of life, and we're really well-equipped to handle it, I think. In the room, um, our midwife was there, and then she called another midwife, who had... been Pearl's midwife earlier on. And then was Hannah, Pearl's eldest sister, and Bithia and Esther, two of her other sisters. Would you like a drink, Pearl? No? Jordan, my sister, was in there for a while too. At 3am, Pearl's waters break, and she's suddenly ready to start pushing. (GASPS) Something went pop. (GROANS) Something popped? Yeah. (GASPS) (GROANS) 1 GROANING Yeah, give a bit more. Yeah, more. Push. A little bit more. The baby's head has been born, but the midwife sees there's a problem. Deep breaths. Deep breaths. ALL TALK OVER EACH OTHER Bubby's got the cord around his neck or her neck. The cord's tangled around the baby. If Pearl pushes now, there'll be trouble. Quick-thinking Harmony eases the cord over the baby's head. OK, give a push. ALL SPEAK OVER EACH OTHER SPLASH! Look at that. OK, got a towel? It's born, but the baby is very quiet. They wrap it in a towel, and Pearl gives him a little cuddle. That's right. Come on. Come on, come on. Come on. Good boy. Hey. BABY CRIES, ALL CHUCKLE POIGNANT MUSIC MUSIC CONTINUES BABY CRIES CRYING CONTINUES CRYING CONTINUES Pearl's just had a baby boy at 3` 10 past 3 this morning. It was really calm. Everything happened just the way it should. She'll probably stay with bubby tonight, uh, probably over here. Just get that bonding time with the baby and with Dad over here too. Hopefully the rest of us can get in some sleep before tomorrow. (CHUCKLES) PAUL: She just stayed calm and just breathed it through. She just handled it nicely. Yeah. Is it too bright in here? WHISPERS: Here's your dad. Pearl's really good at this. She's only had two children. She's really good at it. (CHUCKLES) Just easy. (SNEEZES) We took him over to see Esther at quarter to 8 this morning, but she wasn't awake yet. We had to wake her up to show her her new baby. PEARL: Yeah, she points to his nose and says, 'Nose,' and points to his eyes and says, 'Eyes,' and kept saying, 'Bubby. Bubby.' And she says to me, 'Mum. Hat on.' ALL CHUCKLE I love my life here, and I love being married to Paul. Love my family and being a mum. REFLECTIVE MUSIC In the afternoon, Purity and her new baby are discharged from hospital. The fever has stopped, and he's responded well to the antibiotics. POIGNANT MUSIC MUSIC CONTINUES 1 ALL CHUCKLE A son and a grandson. (CHUCKLES) That's pretty special, within a week. Yes, I haven't seen him yet. I'll have to... head over there and have a look. But first stop for everyone is the Sunday meeting. At Gloriavale, this takes the place of a church service. It's a time to testify your faith and give thanks. Hallelujah! We praise you, oh God! Hallelujah! MAN: Hallelujah! We praise you! Praise you, dear God! There's none like you, Lord! Thank you. Yes, I have a lot to be thankful for tonight, most of all for the grace of God in our lives. I'm also thankful for the children God's given me. I wanna say thank you to you all for your prayers for my boy, because the Lord has answered, and he's well and healthy because the Lord is faithful. MAN: Praise God! Praise God! ALL EXCLAIM At dinner that evening, there's time for any announcements, and there's two special ones for the Valor family. I believe that... God has answered our prayers. He's wonderful and merciful, and we would like to name our baby son Daniel. APPLAUSE Excuse me, everybody. On the seventh morning, God blessed us with a baby boy who is healthy, no problems, and we're glorifying God for the health that he gave us. And his name is Josiah. APPLAUSE (CHUCKLES) With two children and settled into married life, statistically, Paul and Pearl are an average Kiwi couple, but how do their hopes and ambitions compare to the norm? My ambition is to be a godly mother and wife, and I just do that every day. Lots of people do have ambitions, and quite often, their ambitions are for things. Um, cars, houses, a holiday. Whereas for us here, um, things aren't so important to us. Our ambitions are for spiritual things. To serve the Lord every day and in every way that I can. That's all just working towards the bigger ambition of getting ready to go to heaven. We thank you, Lord, that you're coming again! You've given us a promise! And we both really want to have children. Have as many as we can, not just because it's our faith but because we love them. Daniel is number 12 for Purity, but Josiah is only Pearl's second baby, and she's looking forward to welcoming many more. The only challenge will be choosing great names for the next ones.
