www.able.co.nz Captions were made possible with funding from NZ On Air. Able 2014 Can you tell me if Delmar Barry lives here? Try over there. Excuse me, is this where Delmar Barry lives? He ain't here. Go on inside, baby. He's a friend of mine. Actually, he wrote down his address right here. Here. That's Delmar's writing. I had a hard time finding this place. That's his writing. Like I said, he's a friend. I'm John Rambo. We served in 'Nam together. I don't know if he talked about me. I've got a picture of us together... ..somewhere in this junk in the back. Here. Here it is. That's me, that's Danforth, Westmore, Bronson, Ortega and there's Delmar. We put him in the back because he's so big. Delmar's gone. What time will he be back? He died. What? He died last summer. Died how? Cancer. Brought it back from 'Nam. All that orange stuff, they spread it around. Cut him down to nothing. I could lift him. I'm very sorry. I'm sorry. Good morning. How are you? Great. All right this morning? Andy! Howdy, Will. Morning, Dave. Howdy, Sheriff. Gonna take a bath this week? Morning. You...visiting somebody around here? No. Wearing that flag on that jacket, looking the way you do... You're asking for trouble around here, friend. Headed north or south? North. Jump in. I'll make sure you head in the right direction. Where are you headed? Portland. That's south, not north. Is there somewhere I can eat here? There's a diner about 30 miles up the highway. There a law against eating here? Yeah - me. Why are you pushing me? What did you say? Why are you pushing me? I haven't done anything. Firstly, I ask the questions, understand? Secondly, we don't want guys like you in this town. Drifters. Suddenly, there's lots of guys like you in this town. Besides, you wouldn't like it here. It's a quiet little town. In fact, you might say it's boring. But that's how we like it. I get paid to keep it that way. Boring. Portland - straight ahead. Here's some friendly advice. Get a haircut and take a bath. You wouldn't get hassled so much. Have a nice day! Where do you think you're going?! Hey! I'm talking to you. Show me some ID. You're under arrest. Put your hands on the car and you spread them. You'd better put your hands on that car right now! Get your legs back. Get them back! You try to be nice... Well, what do we have here? Why would you carry this knife? Hunting. Don't be a wise guy. What do you hunt with a knife? Name it. Hi, Will. Hi, Lester. Harley, buzz us in. BUZZ Just another smart-ass drifter. Good morning, Arthur. Good morning, Will. What have you got? Book this gentleman for vagrancy, resisting arrest, carrying a concealed weapon. He says it's for hunting. What do you hunt - elephants? Clean him up. Smells like an animal. Hey, Mitch. Mitch! Yo! Escort him downstairs. Yes, sir. Right this way, partner. Right here. That's it. OK, here we go. It'll take Leroy ten years to paint this hall. Come on, Leroy! Sling that paint! Mr Ward, take this for me, please. OK. Name? Your name? Your name?! Name?! If you're looking for trouble, you came to the right place. Wait a second. You've got three seconds before I break your face in. He means it. Yeah, I do. What do you know about that? He's a soldier. Rambo. John J.? You will talk to me. I promise you'll talk to me. I'm starting to dislike you... ..a lot. I'll run a make on him. Put his name in the teletype. Just roll it across. Roll it across! Push it! I can't. It'll only smear. Roll it across! Roll it across or I'll break your hand off! Put it down! What the hell's going on here? Nothing I can't handle. He won't let us print him. Leave the ink on the hand! Just what is your problem? You're facing a 90-day incarceration plus a $250 fine which you don't look like you can pay! Tomorrow, you're going in front of that judge. You think WE'RE tough?! We'll make you more presentable for your courtroom appearance. Between now and then, impress me by doing what you're told. Now clean him up. All right, Preston, I want you to get that hose ready. All right? Holy shit! Look at this. What's he been into? Who gives a shit? Hands on your head and turn around. Oh, Christ! We should report this to Teasle. Just do what I tell you. URGH! What the fuck was that? Well, the man said clean him up. "Clean him up." (Laughs) Hey, Preston, don't forget to get him behind the ears. How do you like that? What's the matter, Mitch? Don't you like water sports? Hurry up. It's time for my break. All right, sit down. Sit down. This boy's hard to get a hold of. Forget the soap. He's tough. Just shave him...dry. All right. Can't you see this guy's crazy? Can't you see I don't care? Yes, I can. That's better. I knew he'd co-operate. He's just going to shave you. Take it easy. Take this, Mitch. (Speaks Vietnamese) Don't move. I don't want to cut your throat. You son of a bitch! Come on! Argh! What the hell is- Art! Art! GUNSHOT Hey...wait! I'll get that bastard! Art, don't shoot! There's people down there. Get help. I'll go after him. Watch out! Get out of the way! SIREN WAILS Son of a bitch! Lester, I'm right on his tail. He's heading toward Chapman Creek. SIREN WAILS CAR HORN HONKS I know you can hear me! You're finished! You've gone as far as you'll go! Did you hear me?! Mitch! Lester! He's up there. Mitch, get Orval on the radio. Tell him to get out here with his dogs. Tell him to bring the Dobermanns. Right. Lester, tell Galt to get the helicopter up here. Tell him not to take any shit! We'll get him. No problem. 1 Come on! Let's get him. Come on, sweetheart. That's it. Let's go get him! It won't be long before you have him stuffed and mounted. Didn't we go deer hunting here? Yeah. Hey, Mitch! Up the hill. Keep those dogs moving. I don't trust those bastards. They eat and run all at once. Straight to the top. This guy's not dangerous, just dumb. Whoa! You're spoiling the scent. Let my babies do their job. OK. I'm trailing you. This is no good. Why? He went through three of us in the cell block. Come on. DOGS BARK DOGS BARK Let's go over there. DOGS BARK We got him cornered. Galt, he's headed for Chapman Gorge. WILL ON RADIO: Head him off. (Screams) HELICOPTER WHIRRS There he is. On the cliff. Son of a bitch! GUNSHOT What the hell's going on? Congressional Medal of Honour. The guy's a war hero. I suspected something like this. What do you want me to do? Do what I said - get that chopper here now! Green Beret. War hero. That's great. That's... Why don't you shut your mouth?! What's wrong with you? He's one wounded man. Those Green Berets... They're real bad asses. Let State Police handle this. Come here, boy! Look. Look at him. It's our Galt, boy. He's been my friend for a long time. Now he's dead. He's dead because of that psycho out there! I'll get him and pin that medal to his liver and I'm going to do it with or without you. THUNDER We're closing in. Scent's getting stronger. Keep your eyes open. Come on, baby. A storm! In the car. Where'd he get the gun? It's Galt's. He's out of ammo. Whatever killed that last dog wasn't a bullet. Orval, listen to me. Stay awake. We'll be right back. We've got to get him. Hurry up! He shouldn't kill my babies. Get the son of a bitch! Let's go! Now, listen up. Let's form a skirmish line - 50 feet apart. There's no way out of here except through us. OK. Let's do some hunting. Hunting? We ain't hunting him. He's hunting us. Spread out! I said 50 feet. I hate this. (Screams) Oh, God! Will, it's Mitch! Oh, shit! Help! Oh, God! Will! Who is it?! Will! WILL! Mitch! Don't push it or I'll give you a war you won't believe. Let it go. Let it go. 'Meanwhile, down on Earth, all those shipwrecks could become playgrounds 1 THINKS: 'I blame the ocean. That's what divides us as people. 'I mean, if we drained all the sea from the planet, then we'd be connected. RADIO PLAYS IN CAR 'I have two PhDs. Should I go for a third? 'I don't wanna throw the sea away. 'I mean, you've gotta keep it; it's of some use.' CAR HONKS 'Maybe up in space, in a bowl. 'Of course, we'd have to house all the animals. 'Meanwhile, down on Earth, all those shipwrecks could become playgrounds for kids; kids of all nations!' TYRES SCREECH, CRASH! RADIO CONTINUES PLAYING BREATHES LOUDLY 1 CAR HORN HONKS Get back. Move back, you guys. Captain, can we have a comment? How bad is the situation? The only good thing about this is the business we're doing in town. You look like you're ready to keel over. Go home. It's my problem now. Don't give me any of your horseshit about jurisdiction! Shall I step outside? Finish what you're doing. REPORTER: Somewhere in this rugged mountain countryside, shrouded in mist, the fugitive, John Rambo, is hiding. Units of the State Police are now being mobilised. What still remains unexplained is just how and where the former Green Beret got the weapons with which he killed one man and tried to kill six others. Only their skill training and police enforcement techniques saved their lives. The fugitive will be in custody in a matter of hours. The map, Will. There's something you should know. I'll talk to you later. What is it? Spit it out! Mitch said that Galt and a couple of deputies were a little hard on the guy. Assholes! It doesn't make any difference. You know it! If a deputy gets out of line with a prisoner, the prisoner sees me about it. I kick the deputy's ass. Me! The law. That's the way it's gotta be! People start fucking around with the law and all hell breaks loose. Whatever possessed God to make someone like Rambo? God didn't make Rambo. I made him. Who the hell are you? Sam Trautman. Colonel Samuel Trautman. What can I do for you? I've come to get my boy. Boy? I recruited him, trained him and commanded him in Vietnam. That makes him mine. Why would the Pentagon send a colonel to handle this? The army thought I could help. Rambo's a civilian. He's my problem. You don't understand. I didn't come here to rescue Rambo from you. I'm rescuing you from him. We all appreciate your concern. We'll try to be extra careful. I'm amazed he let any of you live. Is that right? He slipped up. You're lucky to be breathing. That's just great. You're checking why your machine blew a gasket. You're dealing with an expert in guerilla warfare. He's the best with guns, with knives, with his bare hands. He's been trained to ignore pain, ignore weather, to live off the land, eat things that'd make goats puke. In Vietnam, he disposed of enemy personnel. To kill - period. Win by attrition. Now Rambo was the best. Colonel, now we're all scared to death (!) What do you and the Special Forces think I ought to do about him? Let him go. What?! For now. Defuse the whole situation. Defuse him. Provide a gap. Let him slip through it. Put out a nationwide APB. You'll catch him without anyone getting hurt. I do my own work. I can't close my eyes and hope he gets caught. Your people will get killed. We smalltown hicks do our duty just like our heroes in the Special Forces! We teach our people to stay alive. No shit! You can't win this war! 200 men against him? We'll win. Don't forget one thing. What? A good supply of body bags. Trautman! I still think you're here to cover your ass. If you're serious about taking Rambo out clean, follow me. RADIO: State Police calling John Rambo. Acknowledge. State Police calling John Rambo. Come in, please. Acknowledge. If you're listening, Rambo, here's your situation. You are surrounded. Every possible exit has been blocked. Your services to your country will be taken into consideration and you'll receive fair treatment. Just respond. We'll work everything out. Over. Anything? He took a radio from my deputy. He must be listening. He'll try to pick up information. Of course he's listening. He won't break radio silence. Not for us. He might do it for you. Talk him into sparing our lives by surrendering. I'll try. We'll find out his position. Set him up for us. That's like bringing the pigeons to the cat. Thanks for bringing your people out. Any time. Bobby, put the magazine away. Pay attention. TRAUTMAN: Company leader calling Raven. Come on, Raven. Company leader calling Raven. Company leader to Raven. Talk to me, Johnny. Company leader to identified Baker Team. Rambo, Messner, Ortega, Coleta, Georginson, Danforth, Barry, Krackauer. Confirm. This is Colonel Trautman. Talk to me, Johnny. RAMBO: They're all gone, sir. That's him. Get on it! Are you all right? Over. Baker Team, they're all dead. Not Delmar Barry. He made it. Barry's gone, too, sir. How? Got himself killed in 'Nam. Didn't know it. Cancer... I'm sorry. I didn't know. I'm the last one, sir. It's good to hear your voice. It's been a while. You've done some damage here. That's it! He's north-west. I'll come in there and fly you out. We'll work this out. Is that fair enough? Where'd you come from, sir? Bragg. I couldn't contact you. The guys there couldn't find you. I haven't spent much time there lately. I've been in D.C. I wish I was in Bragg. Come in. We'll talk about that. I can't do that. We can't have you wasting friendly civilians. There are no friendly civilians. I'm your friend. I was there with you. I covered your ass more than once. Bailing you out of trouble's a lifetime job for me. That cop started the trouble. All I wanted was food. He kept pushing me. You did some pushing of your own. They drew first blood, not me. Let me get you out of there. They drew first blood. Rambo, are you still reading me? Company leader to Raven. Rambo, acknowledge! He's all finished. We've got a good fix on him. Tomorrow, I'll put every man I've got on that ridge. Stretch a skirmish line right across this ridge. Goddammit. Goddammit! 1 Come on. Let's go over here. Come on! Move it! What was that? Pa! Pa! There's a guy... What happened? Over there. I see him! Don't shoot! This way. Let's go! There he is! Come on! GUNFIRE Now we've got him! I know where it is. Surround the area, but don't move in. Don't do anything until I get there. No shooting. I want him alive. Keep firing! Come on, guys. Shoot! Come on! You guys are great. All right. Steve! Yo! Go into that mine with Bruce. I ain't going there. No way! Raymond. What? Go into that mine. Not me. What do you mean? I didn't come here to get killed. He's probably waiting for us. All right. Rambo! This is Lieutenant Clinton Morgan, National Guard leader. I'm giving you just 30 seconds to come on out. Who's got the rocket launcher? I do! Come here. This is your last chance to come out! Maybe we should wait. He's a killer. Besides, I'm in charge. I say blow it up. Fire that thing! I'll move away first. Whoo! Yeah! Give that man a cigar! Bullseye! Where are they? Up the hill. Move in a little closer. I don't believe it! Steady. Got it. One more for 'Soldier of Fortune'. Really? What do you think this is? A circus?! Get out of here! Didn't you get the word? I told you to wait for me. He shot at us. I wasn't taking chances. What a mess! Dig his body out of there. Get somebody to dig him out. It's your mess. You clean it up. Will, come on. Get started right away, Clinton! Shit! Buried in a hole by weekend warriors. I thought he was the best. There was a time when he was very special. He's a drifter who broke the law. Vagrancy, wasn't it? That'll look good on his gravestone. "Here lies John Rambo, "Congressional Medal of Honour recipient. "Survivor of countless incursions behind enemy lines. "Killed for vagrancy in Jerkwater." Don't give me that crap. Rambo wasn't the only one who had it tough in Vietnam. He killed a police officer! He could've killed you all. You wanted us to let him loose to save our asses. We saved our asses, Colonel, and we didn't let him go loose. The best man lost! And HE doesn't like it! 1 (Yells) Hi, Will. Hold my calls. RATS SQUEAL Colonel. Have a seat. Oh, miss! Another one. Hi, Sheriff. For my friend... Oh...Wild Turkey. If I was out of line before, I want to apologise. None of that makes much difference now. No, I guess not. I suppose... I don't know. I just feel... Like you were cheated out of your chance? I wanted so much to kill that kid, I could taste it. It don't sit well with that badge. It can get confusing sometimes. In Vietnam, you can bet that Rambo and I got pretty confused. But we had orders. When in doubt, kill. What the hell, you're a civilian. You can go home to your wife and your house. You're under no pressure to figure all this out. What about you? What did you figure out from all of this? What would you have done if he'd come in? Hugged him and given him a kiss? Or blown his brains out? I couldn't answer that until I'd met him face-to-face. Well, there it is. Luckily we never got a chance to find out. Drive. Don't look at me. Look at the road. What's your name? Cathcart. Robert A. What have you got in the back? M-16. Get out! I've got no beef with you. Go on! Move! Go home! CAR HORN HONKS RADIO: SP Car 1... Turn that up. Are we still on that hook-up? Roger. Still working. What's your story, Steamboat? Somebody pulled the plug too soon. John Rambo is on the loose again. Shit! We're setting up roadblocks... Hey, Will - it's Rambo. He's still around. SIREN WAILS GUNSHOT Holy fuck! Get out there, right away. Move! What the hell's going on?! Watch it! They're all going to blow! Attention all civilians. For your own safety, please evacuate the streets immediately. Remain indoors until you receive further instructions. I repeat. This is a police emergency. Please evacuate the streets immediately. They found Rambo's body. It stole a truck and blew up a gas station. The kid is resilient. Forget what you're thinking. Clear out now. Get the fuck out of here, Trautman, and take your advice with you. When we talked earlier, you knew he was alive. I suspected. Sure. That's why you stuck around. You trained him! You taught him how to escape. He won't escape again. You couldn't handle him before. You still can't. God knows what damage he's prepared to do. You're going to die, Teasle. Everybody dies. I'm the only one here who's got half a chance. He trusts me. I'm the closest thing he's got to family. Where do you people come from? It's my job. It's my town. I'm not giving it up to anybody. Stay out of my way! 1 Get closer. I can't! It's too goddamned hot! Will, it's Lester. Do you copy? Let's go! Will, do you copy? We've got some serious problems. The highway's been cut off. The truck's down here, but there's no body. It's totally burned out. Get those people out of here! Move back! Move back. Goddammit. Goddammit! GODDAMMIT! (EXPLOSION) (GUNFIRE) (GUNFIRE) (GROANS) Go ahead. Go ahead, you crazy son of a bitch! Rambo! Rambo, don't do it. Listen to me, Rambo. You have no chance. Drop your weapon. The chopper will fly you back to Bragg. GUNSHOT Hold your fire! Kern! Hold your fire. KERN: Hold your fire. Think about what you're doing. The building's perimeter is covered. No exits. There are 200 men outside with M-16s. You did everything to make this war happen. You've done enough damage. This mission's over. This mission is over! Look at them out there. Look at them! End this or they'll kill you. Do you want that? It's over, Johnny. It's over! Nothing is over! Nothing! You just don't turn it off! It wasn't my war. You asked me! I did everything to win. Then I come back to the world and the protestors call me baby-killer and other crap! Who are they to protest me unless they've been there and know what they're yelling about?! It was a bad time for everyone. It's all in the past now, Rambo. For you! In the field, we watched each other's backs. Back here there's nothing! You're the last of an elite group. Don't end it like this. Back there, I was important. Back here, I can't even hold a job! I can't... Jesus! Oh, God! Where is everybody? God... I had a friend, Danforth... I had all those guys. Back there, those guys were my friends. Back here, there's nothing. Remember Danforth? He wore this black headband. I took one of those Magic Markers and said, "If found, mail to Las Vegas," because we were always talking about Vegas. And his Chevy... He said we'd cruise until the tyres fall off. In Saigon, this kid came up with a shoeshine box. He said, "Shine, please." I said no. He kept asking. And Joey said yeah. I went to get some beers and the box is wired. He opened the box. It blew his body everywhere. He's laying there screaming. There's pieces all over me. My friend was all over me! I'm trying to hold him together. His insides kept coming out! And nobody would help! He's saying, "I want to go home. "I want to drive my Chevy." I said, "I can't find your legs! I can't get it out of my head! Sometimes I wake up and I don't know where I am. I don't talk to anybody. Sometimes a day... ..sometimes a week... I can't put it out of my mind! SONG: It's a long road when you're on your own And it hurts when they tear your dreams apart And every new town just seems to bring you down Trying to find peace of mind can break your heart It's a real war Right outside your front door, I tell you Out where they'll kill you You could use a friend Where the road ends That's the place for me Where I make my own space Where I'm free That's the place I want to be 'Cause the road is long Each step is only the beginning No breaks, just heartaches Oh, man, is anybody winning? It's a long road And it's hard as hell Tell me, what do you do to survive? When they draw first blood That's just the start of it Day and night you've got to fight To keep alive It's a real war right outside your front door I tell you Out where they'll kill you You could use a friend 'Cause the road is long Each step is only the beginning No breaks, just heartaches Oh, man, is anybody winning? The road is long Each step is only the beginning No breaks, just heartaches Oh, man, is anybody winning? It's a long road.
