PA: What a beautiful morning for a championship race! The track team have done an awesome job. The sun's shining ` perfect conditions for what should be a clash of motocross titans. And boy, do we have a real fight on our hands! The young Caleb Saunders on the 102 KTM is coming on strong, having found some extra speed this year to put the heat on the current champion, the confident-but-under-pressure Ryan Wilde. (TENSE MUSIC) You've got this, Ryan. Use your head. (ENGINES TURN OVER) (ENGINES REV) (ENGINES REV) (TENSE MUSIC BUILDS) (ENGINES WHINE) Captions were made with the support of NZ On Air. Copyright Able 2018. (ENGINES WHINE) (LIGHT-HEARTED MUSIC) PA: And next, it's Georgia Grady, current national champion, riding Rocky. These two are really unbeatable at the moment, leading the table with three perfect runs today. (HOOVES CLATTER SOFTLY) Attagirl. (HOOVES CLATTER SOFTLY) (TENSE MUSIC) (ENGINE WHINES) PA: And straight out of the gate. And these riders take up where they left off. Basova takes no prisoners. Saunders' corner speed this year is something else. Saunders all over Wilde now. It looks like he wants to get by in a hurry. Saunders thinking about making the pass. It's not a matter of if; it's a matter of when. This is the tightest championship race we've seen in years. Wilde out front. But this is exactly where Saunders wants to be ` on his rear wheel, leaving Wilde blind, stalking, knocking on the door. Saunders uses that corner speed, cuts inside, takes the lead! But he's gonna have to put the hammer down if wants to maintain this week. Come on, Ryan. Caleb has some mean-as corner speed. I know. Tell me about it (!) Wilde back in front, but Saunders all over him. There's nowhere to hide for the number one. (HOOVES CLATTER SOFTLY) (POIGNANT MUSIC) I think we might be going to Australia for the Oceania Champs in July. Don't jinx it, Mike. Well, there's no one up in Auckland as good as her. I mean, she's` Shh. Watch. (HORSE NEIGHS) (HOOVES CLATTER SOFTLY) SOFTLY: Oh yeah. (CHUCKLES SOFTLY) PA: Another perfect clear for Georgia and Rocky. They stay at the top of the table, unbeaten. (TENSE MUSIC) Over the big monster jump, it's Saunders who's laying down the gauntlet today. If Wilde wants this championship, he's gonna have to really earn it. This competition is completely up for grabs. This is the kind of precedent... Hey, Tom. Hey, Broxie. Ryan's riding well. Yeah, he just needs to get his toe in those ruts, though. I might send him to your boot camp. Oh, yeah, either a boot camp or ballet school. (CHUCKLES) Funny bugger, you. (ENGINE WHINES) (TENSE MUSIC) Come on, Ryan. He knows how to ride. He's fine. PA: And it's Saunders down the last straight into the final corner. A great ride. Really taking Wilde to school. A win for the 102 making the biggest statement. (ENGINES WHINE) Oh dear. (ALL CHEER) (WATER HISSES) (BANG!) Hey, Ryan, that's a $600 helmet. We can't afford another one this season. Yeah, I'm sorry, Mum. I just hate losing. Well, you didn't lose. You came second. I had him. Hey, second is fine. Especially if you win the next one. Yeah, if. And you were neck and neck the whole time, so... ...so let's see what sort of speed we can get out of the bike now, eh? Hey, Bec, can you get me the oil? Thank you... very much. (LIGHT-HEARTED MUSIC) (MUSIC CONTINUES) We've got three weeks until the nationals in Hastings. That gives us plenty of time to get enough ride time and travel. I wish it was tomorrow, though. Rocky is just so good right now. Ooh, another cuppa before we go? I wanna pack up. Let's get on the road, eh? Georgia? Yes. Sorry ` what can we do for you? David Simons ` National Showjumping Committee. Oh, of course. Nice to meet you, Mr Simons. Oh, please, please, call me David. 'Course. Would you like a cup of tea, David? No, no. Please, I'd just like a quick word with Georgia if I may. Oh, of course. Well, firstly, congratulations on your win ` another great ride. Thank you. Is it five straight competition wins so far this year? This was number six. 'Course. (CHUCKLES) My mistake. Well, the Olympic Committee's been watching your progress, and I have to say, we're very impressed, Georgia. Thank you. In fact, we haven't seen this kind of promise in the arena since, dare I say it, Janelle Price. Whoa. That is high praise, isn't it, Georgia? (CHUCKLES) Yeah, I guess. So the committee has decided to invite you to join our national high-performance training programme. What does that mean? (POIGNANT MUSIC) Well, we believe that one day you're gonna represent this country in the Olympics. (CHUCKLES SOFTLY) (MUSIC CONTINUES) You've got this, Ryan. I (ROCK MUSIC) Don't worry, son ` you win some, you lose some. He didn't lose. I know; I'm just saying that you don't have to be first to win. What? It's like he's found more speed this season. Yes, he has. Heather. Well, it's true. And sitting round pretending true things aren't true doesn't make them not true. I know, but it just sounds a bit rough, you know? Dad, it's fine. Why would we drive all this way from Auckland if we weren't trying to win? That's not what I meant. That's what it sounded like. We drive all this way on a Sunday so that we can spend time together. Thought it was to win. It's all good; I just need to ride faster. That's my boy. Hey, Mrs Wilde. Hi, Grace. How's your mum? OK, I guess. Great. I see Wendy's winning again. Yeah, always winning. (CHUCKLES SOFTLY) Hey, Ryan. Thought I'd bring you the timing sheets for the race. Good ride this morning. Oh, thanks, Grace. Ooh, Ryan's got a girlfriend. Shut up, Becky. (CHUCKLES) Hey, pretending true things aren't true doesn't make them not true. (CHUCKLES) Becky, can you pass me the 12ml? I said, the 12ml. Oh, yeah, OK. Thank you. (CELL PHONE RINGS) Hey, sis. Guess what? Let me guess ` George won again? Well, she did, but something bigger, much bigger. Bigger? What could be bigger than my all-conquering niece conquering? They have invited her to join the high-performance squad. Are you serious? WHISPERS: They said Olympics. (CHUCKLES) That's amazing. What? George got in the national high-performance squad. All right! We really need to get down to see you guys. It's been so long. I know. Absolutely. Maybe Christmas? We'll try. It's Tom's busy time at the shop. Well, we have to work it out somehow. I miss you. I need to see how big my Becky's grown. You wouldn't believe it if I told you. (TOOL WHIRRS) (BBQ SIZZLES) Hey, well, thanks for the time sheet and stuff, Grace. No worries. Caleb's fast this year. I was going slow. Of course. (CHUCKLES) I better get back to the race tent. Good luck with your race, though. Thanks, Grace. Hey, Ryan. Sorry about before, bro ` you know, winning and all. I was going slow. I could tell. No, on purpose. Yeah, whatever. Can I see that? And how fast was I? I can get you a copy if you like. Nah. Wanna know how fast? Fast enough to win. Let's just see what happens in the next race. Yeah, I'll see you at the finish line` And I'll roost you so hard` Yeah, OK, you two. Quit it. Hi, Mrs Wilde. Hi, Caleb. Nice race this morning. Thank you. I gotta go. Let's go, Ryan. Gotta get ready for the next race. (CHUCKLES SOFTLY) (HORSE SNORTS SOFTLY) (METAL CLICKS) (METAL CLANGS, SQUEAKS) (SIGHS) Well, Georgie, I couldn't be prouder of you. Wow. (CHUCKLES) (GRUNTS) Me too. Thanks, Mum. So excited. Yeah. Gonna be a lot of hard work, but nothing we can't handle, eh? Well, like what? Well, there'll be more training, I reckon, and probably even an exercise regime for you, but you'll be fine. Yeah, I can't wait (!) That's the spirit, honey. (CHUCKLES WRYLY) It is what you want, right, love? Yeah, I guess. Look, it'll be fun. Plus, you'll get to meet some of your heroes, like Mark Todd. That'll be awesome. (CHUCKLES) Do you think I will? Of course. (CHUCKLES SOFTLY) And can I keep riding Rocky? Yeah, of course. You guys are a team. He's part of our family. How could we go anywhere without him? I couldn't. (SIGHS) I couldn't either. Exactly. And we can't go anywhere without you, so that's that. We are Team Grady, and we're going all the way. Ha! Whoo! Here we go! Come on! (LITTLE BARK'S 'POLY') (ELECTRONIC POP MUSIC) # I've been thinking about you # all night long. # Even in the dark, # I know you're gone. # You kept telling me # that I should've held on, # but I know it's time # I got myself movin' on, # movin' on. # I'll see you at the line. All right, Becs, what have you got for me? You have him covered in the straight. He's found an edge in corner speed. He turns with his back wheel ` you know, like Eli Tomac does ` so that he can cut down from the top of a bowl faster than you. And? If he goes wide on the corner, he's going to cut to the inside. So you're gonna have to stand him up. Don't leave the corner open, get in front, make him brake for you. Sounds good, Becs. Thanks. (TENSE MUSIC) PA: This championship is turning into a real brawl, a fair fifth throwdown with two of the best riders to come along in a while. Parity like this is rare. And the winner? The fans. But who will be the victor? Ryan Wilde, the current champion, is not used to this kind of pressure. How will he respond? Does he have what it takes? Better luck this time. You make your own luck, mate; I don't need yours. You're gonna need all the luck you can get. OK, you two. Sorry, Mrs Wilde. WHISPERS: Remember, you have him in the straights. Use your head. (TENSE MUSIC BUILDS) (ENGINES REV) (ENGINE TURNS OVER) (TENSE MUSIC BUILDS) (ENGINES WHINE) having found some extra speed this year to put the heat on the current champion, the confident-but-under-pressure Ryan Wilde. I (TENSE MUSIC) PA: It's like these two are joined at the hip ` no visible advantage by either of them. This is what the fans have come to see. Wilde out to an early lead. This is exactly what he needed to do. He can't give the 102 any chances to break in early. Through the rollers, and Saunders has found the line down the outside, draws even. They've come together! And Saunders cuts Wilde off into the ditch! Oh no. Dirty move, plain and simple. Come on, Ryan. Get back up on the track. This is a disaster for Wilde. Can you see him? Nup. Can he get that bike started? (SIGHS) He just slid. He'll be fine. (ENGINE WHINES) He's back on the track, but almost a lap down. He's half a lap behind. It's over. Not yet, Tom. If I know our boy, he ain't finished ` not by a long shot. Now we're gonna see if Wilde has got what he needs to take some points, keep that championship from slipping away. Wilde, buried in the pack, trying to find a way through the backmarker. Saunders, with a clear track, is laying down one hot lap after another. Wilde up two more positions. He's moving slowly up the pack, but with time running down, it could be all for nothing. Now Wilde can see Saunders up front. But can he reel him in? See what I mean? Never count him out. Go, Ryan, honey! He's almost possessed. (CHUCKLES) Wilde into fourth! He's coming for Saunders, and he might just get there. These are the kind of rides that make champions, and Wilde is proving right now why he is one. White flag ` one lap to go. Saunders still laying it down, but is it enough? It's now or never for the number one. (MUSIC SLOWS) (TENSE MUSIC RESUMES) Wilde now up on Saunders' rear wheel. What a ride! What a comeback! The 102 probably can't believe what he's hearing ` the scream of Wilde's number-one machine right behind him. Into the last straight. When will Wilde pull the trigger? Down to the last corner ` Saunders outside, looking to round the berm. Close the door, Ryan. Shut it tight. Wilde carves underneath, shuts the door, giving Saunders a mouthful of roots to say thanks. (CELEBRATORY MUSIC) What an epic ride... and win! These kind of wins are what legends are made of. And if Wilde can continue this kind of clutch riding, he's definitely a legend-in-the-making. For Saunders? Well, back to the drawing board for him. Yeah, boy! Hello. Heather Wilde. Yes, she's my sister. What? Well, that can't be. What's up, honey? It's Penny. They've been in a car accident. (OMINOUS MUSIC) (MONITOR BEEPS SOFTLY) (MELANCHOLY MUSIC) (MUSIC CONTINUES) Hey, Mum, can I get you a coffee or something? No, dear. Thank you. Any word on Penny? Can we see her yet? No, sorry, Isla. Not since I last asked. But I could ask again and get some water. Mm. (SIGHS) We got here as soon as we could. Hi, Walter, Margaret. Thank goodness you're here. Oh, what a circus that airline is! Yeah, well, you're here now, though, eh? WHISPERS: What happened? Truck crossed the centre line, and they couldn't do anything, apparently. WHISPERS: What about Mike and Penny? Well, we haven't heard, but they won't let us see them. (OMINOUS MUSIC) (MUSIC CONTINUES) (SIGHS) Hey, can I get you something? Water? Coffee? Nah. No. I'm all good. You all right? We're good. All right. I like Auntie Penny. Yeah, me too. Me too. Mummy is pretty upset. Yeah, I've never seen her cry before. When your mum was about your age, she and Penny were swinging on a big tyre we had tied to a tree in the backyard. Suddenly, crack! The rope broke, and the tyre with them in it disappeared down the bank at the back of the house. I ran as fast as I could, like a wild man. I was scared to death. And then I found them both in the middle of a blackberry bush, all scratched and bumped and bruised, laughing themselves fit to bust. Wow. And you know what? What? Your mum was laughing, but she had big tears in her eyes. So I gave her a big hug anyway. Your mum loves it when you give her a big hug. (CHUCKLES) I don't like it when she cries. Yeah, me neither. Nah, me neither. (MELANCHOLY MUSIC) (MUSIC CONTINUES) I'm gonna find a doctor. I need to know what's happened to Mike. Hello. I'm Dr Green. Walter Grady. Georgia is stable. We believe she'll make it through. Broken leg and some internal bruising ` a very lucky girl. What about Mike? I'm afraid both Michael Grady and Penny Grady suffered severe internal injuries. We were unable to stem the bleeding, and there was nothing we could do. (SOBS) I'm terribly sorry for your loss. (MELANCHOLY MUSIC) Captions were made with the support of NZ On Air.
