CAPTIONS BY ABLE. WWW.ABLE.CO.NZ CAPTIONS WERE MADE WITH THE SUPPORT OF NZ ON AIR. COPYRIGHT ABLE 2018 (LIVELY MUSIC) KIA ORA, GREAT TO HAVE YOU WITH US. WELCOME TO OUR COVERAGE OF THE 2018 COMMONWEALTH GAMES FROM AUSTRALIA'S BEAUTIFUL GOLD COAST. THE EXCITEMENT ALL BEGINS RIGHT NOW. TONIGHT WE HAVE ALL THE BUZZ OF THE OPENING CEREMONY. IT'S WHEN THE TONE IS REALLY SET FOR THE 21ST COMMONWEALTH GAMES. IT ALSO REMINDS US OF THE INCREDIBLE MOMENTS WE'VE WITNESSED, AND THE MAGICAL MEMORIES THAT THIS SPORTING EVENT CREATES. For the honour of our Commonwealth and the glory of sport. On the Sydney Cricket ground it is the opening game of the empire games. I declare the seventh British and Empire Commonwealth games open. Christchurch New Zealand. Queen Elizabeth Stadium. A great moment this New Zealand sporting history. New Zealand. (UPLIFTING MUSIC) the heart of the games will be the MCG. One of the world's great cricket grounds. India! It gives me the greatest pleasure to declare the 20th Commonwealth games open. AS YOU CAN SEE, THE OPENING CEREMONIES JUST KEEP GETTING BIGGER AND BETTER EACH GAMES. THEY'RE MORE LIKE EXTRAVAGANZAS THESE DAYS, AND THERE'S USUALLY THAT ONE THING THAT EACH IS REMEMBERED FOR. THAT GIANT WINKING KANGAROO YOU SAW THERE WAS THE BIG CROWD PLEASER OF THE 1982 GAMES IN BRISBANE. WHO KNOWS WHAT DELIGHTS WILL BE IN STORE FOR US TONIGHT! THE OPENING CEREMONY LAUNCHES OUR MOST COMPREHENSIVE COVERAGE EVER OF A COMMONWEALTH GAMES. THAT MEANS A TON OF ACTION, AND THE VERY BEST IN THE BUSINESS ON THE GROUND HELPING US SOAK IN THE GOLD COAST ATMOSPHERE. IN THE COMMENTARY BOX TONIGHT, WE'VE GOT JENNY MAY CLARKSON, FORMER SILVER FERN, AND OUR VERY OWN SPORTING ORACLE PETER WILLIAMS. AT THE SUNSHINE COAST PARTY ZONE IS SAM WALLACE. OUR SPORTS NEWS ANCHOR ANDREW SAVILLE IS TRACKSIDE AND KIMBERLEY DOWNS IS WITH THE NEW ZEALAND TEAM WAITING OUTSIDE THE MAIN STADIUM. LET'S CHECK IN WITH PETE AND JENNY MAY ABOUT WHAT WE CAN EXPECT TONIGHT. PETE, YOU'VE BEEN TO A FEW OF THESE THINGS. ANY INTEL FOR US? I do know what is going to happen snow but I will not tell you as it would spoil the surprise. It will be a celebration of Gold Coast life. From the indigenous to modern times. Delta Goodrem will be on show. The parade of nations will be the highlight. I was part of that in 2002 in Manchester. I have the privilege of walking into the stadium. It was amazing. We got into trouble and that parade because the sevens team decided to do an impromptu haka to the Queen, and as a result of that we held up the rest of the nations. It was a privilege. Some athletes do not get that opportunity because the competition starts tomorrow. Some of them are preparing for that. It will be a special night for Sophie Pascoe. She will be the flag bearer for New Zealand. It is a special moment for her and her family and friends. You are in good hands tonight with me and the Oracle. This is my third time at the Commonwealth games. Have you been 10 times? I first went in 1982. This makes the number seven. I went two Brisbane 36 years ago. A lot has changed. But the friendly games is the correct moniker. Iit is a lot more relaxing the Olympics and I'm sure the Gold Coast will put on a good show over the next 10 days. THANKS GUYS. I will member to watch out for those naughty sevens boys. PETER AND JENNY MAY WILL BE BRINGING YOU THE OPENING CEREMONY IN ABOUT 25 MINUTES. SO AS I MENTIONED, WE'LL HAVE THE MOST EXTENSIVE FREE-TO-AIR COVERAGE OF A COMMONWEALTH GAMES EVER, ACROSS 4 DIFFERENT CHANNELS. HERE'S WHERE YOU CAN WATCH ` WITH ME HERE ON TVNZ1; THERE'S DUKE; PLUS AN ALL NEW CHANNEL 'TVNZ GAMES EXTRA', WHICH IS AVAILABLE ON FREEVIEW CHANNEL 14 AND SKY 59. THERE'S ALSO 'TVNZ GAMES ONLINE', WHICH HAS COVERAGE OF EVEN MORE EVENTS. THAT'S ONLY AVAILABLE AT TVNZ.CO.NZ. FOR THE OPENING CEREMONY TONIGHT, IF YOU'RE AFTER SOMETHING A WEE BIT DIFFERENT, WE HAVE ALTERNATIVE COMMENTARY ON DUKE FROM 9PM. THAT'S MIKE LAINE, MATT HEATH AND SEVEN SHARP HOST JEREMY WELLS, WHO NEVER DISAPPOINT IN SPICING THINGS UP A LITTLE. A KEY PART OF EVERY OPENING CEREMONY IS THE ARRIVAL OF THE ATHLETES, AND TONIGHT THE NEW ZEALAND TEAM WILL BE LED INTO CARRARA STADIUM BY TWO-TIME GOLD MEDALLIST SWIMMER SOPHIE PASCOE. IT'S THE FIRST TIME A PARA-SPORT ATHLETE HAS BEEN CHOSEN TO LEAD THE TEAM. PARA EVENTS WERE GIVEN FULL MEDAL STATUS AT THE MANCHESTER GAMES IN 2002. LAST NIGHT, HAYLEY HOLT CAUGHT UP WITH SOPHIE PASCOE AHEAD OF TONIGHT'S BIG OCCASION. It is a huge honour to be asked out of 250 athletes and incredible athletes that we have a New Zealand. I am really excited about leading this team out. To be one team as well. There was no difference between me being a para athlete and that means everything to me to do is fit right into the team. When is a standard relation to your gold medals? This is on top of them. This is more about being a humble and gracious athlete who is proud to wear the silver fern and represent New Zealand on the world stage. I can carry the rest of the team out, the biggest team, it means the world to me. NOT LONG NOW UNTIL SOPHIE PASCOE WILL BE LEADING THE KIWI TEAM INTO THE OPENING CEREMONY, JUST AS VALERIE ADAMS DID FOUR YEARS AGO IN GLASGOW. CARRARA STADIUM IS WHERE IT'S ALL HAPPENING TONIGHT. IT'S USUALLY THE HOME OF THE GOLD COAST SUNS, THE AUSSIE RULES TEAM IN THE AFL, WHERE IT HOLDS AROUND 27,000 PEOPLE. THEY'VE EXTENDED THAT ESPECIALLY FOR THE GAMES TO 35,000. IT'S ALSO WHERE THE TRACK AND FIELD TAKES PLACE, THE FINISH LINE OF THE MARATHON AND THE ROAD WALKING EVENTS, PLUS THE CLOSING CEREMONY. AND RIGHT NOW, JUST OUTSIDE THE MAIN STADIUM, IS WHERE THE ATHLETES FROM ACROSS THE COMMONWEALTH ARE ARRIVING, DECKED OUT IN THEIR COUNTRY'S CHOSEN UNIFORMS. WITH OUR NEW ZEALAND TEAM, IS KIMBERLEE DOWNS. KIM, HOW'S THE ATMOSPHERE? The atmosphere really is something pretty special out here. We are where the athletes get off their buses from the athletes Village and head into a holding pen before they are ushered into the opening ceremony. Among those are the New Zealand team and I am lucky to be joined now by Hamish Bond our two-time Olympic gold medal is roller. Here he is cycling. Rowing. Rowing is typically in the first week of the Olympics, aand as much as you would like to go to the opening ceremony it is not the best choice. So I had to swap sports to get the chance to go to the opening ceremony. Am happy to be here. How does the Commonwealth Games experience differed to the Olympic one? It has been great. The Gold Coast has done a great job of hosting the event. The villages really well put together. I am enjoying it. It is a small and condensed version of the Olympics. The friendly games really does epitomise what it is all about. It is slightly less serious and slightly younger. Or maybe I'm getting older. It is really cool. Maybe it is a bit of both. He mentioned the younger crowd, we have a couple of the youngsters here. Our two youngest team members. Stella Ashcroft and Stella Ebert the gymnasts who are both 15. How are you finding a first Commonwealth games experience? I am happy to be here. It is overwhelming. How are you finding it staying away from some of the distractions the village has to offer? Definitely the village is amazing. It is something I have dreamt of for a long time, since I was little and it is such a surreal experience. What your schoolmates think of both of you being here? I do still online so my school friends are more like my gym friends they are supporting me. At 15 years old can you give us an insight into how much training and preparation goes into you being here at these games? I train over 36 hours a week so it is a lot of hard work and hours and sweat, but it is always in the end. Thank you so much ladies. We will let them go into the holding pen now before they much of the ceremony. We will be 62nd tonight let out by Sophie Pascoe. THANKS, KIM. GOOD LUCK FOR THE BIG NIGHT. I get the feeling it will get a little bit more overwhelming when they step into the stadium. IT'S A BIG NIGHT OVER ON OUR DUKE CHANNEL TOO ` THAT'S FREEVIEW CHANNEL 13 OR SKY 23. GUY HEVELDT IS ANCHORING THE COVERAGE. GUY, WHAT WILL DUKE BE FEATURING, ASIDE FROM THOSE CRAZY 'ALTERNATIVE COMMENTARY' BOYS? A couple of questions around what they will be offering up tonight. We will be 24-7. You guys go for breaks with the news and Seven Sharp, but we will be on the Commonwealth games the entire day. We will stay with sessions for the entire thing. Especially tomorrow night when I suspect New Zealand will have at least one medal at the velodrome. The next three hours should be fairly interesting and we'll get through that with Matt, Mike and Jeremy. Things can only get better from there. You sound a bit husky. They have already gotten hold of you. WE'VE GOT MUCH MORE TO COME AFTER THE BREAK. ANDREW SAVILLE IS STANDING BY FROM CARRARA STADIUM, AS WELL AS A COUPLE OF VERY SPECIAL GUESTS JOINING ME HERE IN THE STUDIO TO TALK ABOUT THE GAMES AHEAD. GREAT TO HAVE YOU WITH US FOR TVNZ'S FREE-TO-AIR COVERAGE OF THE 2018 COMMONWEALTH GAMES. WE'RE UNDER 20 MINUTES AWAY FROM THE START OF THE OPENING CEREMONY NOW. OUR TEAM OF OVER A DOZEN REPORTERS WILL BE AT ALL OF THE EVENTS OVER THE NEXT 11 DAYS. ONE OF THOSE REPORTERS IS ANDREW SAVILLE. HAMISH CARTER WAS NEW ZEALAND'S FLAG BEARER AT THE 2006 COMMONWEALTH GAMES IN MELBOURNE, WHERE HE NABBED A SILVER MEDAL. THAT WAS AFTER BRONZE AT THE 2002 MANCHESTER GAMES, AND WHO CAN FORGET THAT EPIC OLYMPIC GOLD IN ATHENS 2004. LONG JUMPER CHANTAL BRUNNER ATTENDED FOUR COMMONWEALTH GAMES FOR NEW ZEALAND AND HAS 17 NATIONAL TITLES UNDER HER BELT. WELCOME TO YOU BOTH. Hamish, you were a flag bearer. What has it been like watching the build up? It is quite tough actually. For Sophie, she has trained to perform at the Commonwealth Games, and now she has a huge honour to carry the flag for New Zealand. There will be mixed emotions. But an amazing experience. Jeremy ever what it is like to be a part of all of that? You want to enjoy the occasion. . We had a little bit of a breather. It was overwhelming. As we heard seller talk about earlier. The athletes will be fizzing in anticipation. There will be pride in so many emotions rushing through their bodies right now. It seems like all the countries are close together when they arrive in the stadium. Do you mix with the other countries? Not so much in the opening ceremony. You tend to be with your team. In the closing ceremony, it is a different matter. Hamish, for you, triathlon was your big sport. We kick that off tomorrow. What are you thinking for tomorrow's events? I think the triathlon team have worked incredibly hard to get to this point. They are in really good shape. They will be under no illusions that with Great Britain and Australia. There, it is a world-class field. But I think Andrea Hewitt, Tony Dodds, it is a very strong team. And then a couple days later, they have a mixed team relay. They have quite a unique schedule to prepare for. This is the first time they of race those two races a couple days apart. We have and ask an athlete a question thing running on our website. What does the Commonwealth Games are mean to you as an athlete? That is a tough one. I think for each athlete, it is slightly different. When you are planning your year, the world championships or the Olympics are often the pinnacle. When Commonwealth Games comes around, it may not be the most important race, but it is what is really important to New Zealand. We know the whole country will be watching. It may not be your top event, but when you arrive, you want to perform well. I think that is how the team on the Gold Coast will be feeling. . Chantal, do you still get tingles when you see the athletes speak? Do you miss it? I do. But then I think back to all the hours of training and sweat. It puts it all back into perspective again. I am really looking forward to seeing the athletes compete in watching them have their time. Thank you, sit back and enjoy and relax. If you have something you want to ask our experts, you can go to our website and register your question. We have a lot of cycling finals tomorrow night. WE ARE JUST MINUTES AWAY FROM THE START OF THE OPENING CEREMONY. STAY RIGHT HERE WITH US. (LAUGHTER) # Lazy days... # (WHOOPING) (LAUGHTER) (ENGINE REVS) What have you got under the hood, bro? What?! Shush! What's under the hood? You wouldn't believe me. (ALL EXCLAIM) (INTRIGUING MUSIC) (TYRES SCREECH, MEN EXCLAIM, CAR WHIRRS) (BOTH LAUGH) THE OPENING CEREMONY ON THE GOLD COAST IS ABOUT TO BEGIN. DON'T FORGET IF YOU WANT THE ALTERNATIVE COMMENTARY FROM THE ACC BOYS, THAT'S ON DUKE NOW. HERE ON TVNZ1, WE HAVE PETER WILLIAMS AND JENNY MAY CLARKSON DOING THE HONOURS. JUST A FEW DAYS AGO, HE WAS RINGSIDE AT THE JOSEPH PARKER-ANTHONY JOSHUA FIGHT. TONIGHT, HE'S TRACKSIDE AT CARRARA STADIUM, WHERE NO DOUBT IT'S A TAD WARMER THAN CARDIFF, SAV? It is definitely warmer, But it is certainly not dry out. If only the ceremony was indoors. The heavens have opened up. Rain was due but I don't think organisers expected these showers that were having at the moment. That is going to put a better dampener on proceedings. This is going to be a wet opening ceremony. Australians know how to organise big events. 35,000 have poured in here over the last hour or so. Everybody is ready. Unfortunately it will be a tad damp. THANK YOU, SAV, AND ANDREW SAVILLE WILL ALSO BE COMMENTATING THE FINALS OF THE RUGBY SEVENS, WHICH, HOPEFULLY, BOTH OUR MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TEAMS WILL FEATURE IN. JUST BEFORE WE GET TO THEM, IT'S NOT ALL HAPPENING INSIDE THE STADIUM TONIGHT. THE GOLD COAST IS KNOWN AS A PARTY TOWN, SO WE'VE SENT OUR OWN PARTY BOY RIGHT INTO THE THICK OF IT. SAM WALLACE IS AT THE SURFERS PARADISE FAN ZONE. SAM, HOW'S IT GOING? Everything was going perfectly. We were set up on the beach with a beach party. We had crowds of people and then the shower came down. Like you had never seen before. I am amongst the parties but again I am doing a weather report. These guys are doing a magnificent story. We are from Scotland. Now where are you originally from? Scotland, Isle of Man and then New Zealand. The rest of the family went to Glasgow but then decided to come to the Gold Coast. These games have united a family. Let's have a look at the fans zone. It was cranking before the rain. The beach is such a great alternative. There are performances and bands. The opening ceremony cost $500, but the fans own is free. Trust you to get drenched. The weatherman did not predict it. THAT'S IT FROM ME. TIME NOW TO GO TO PETER WILLIAMS AND JENNY MAY CLARKSON FOR THE OPENING CEREMONY OF THE GOLD COAST 2018 COMMONWEALTH GAMES. GUYS, TAKE IT AWAY. We will be alive to the Commonwealth in just one minute. Stand by for a countdown and be ready to smile and enjoy. (CHEERING) (ROUSING MUSIC PLAYS) They countdown is on.
