But we may have figured out a way to make things right. I gathered some data on the Wave, and if it keeps growing, soon there will only be Wave. The Red Rage ` it's something in the air. It makes kids go crazy. Where you heading? I can find you. I can't tell you that. ELIZA: I tried to warn you about Caine. He just kidnapped me and left me in a forest with that thing. I'm sorry about this, Rose, but I have to put my people first. The man ` he is coming for you. The van got us all the way to Jen's grandfather's farm. Everybody began to settle into their new life. (HAUNTING MUSIC) I had another one of those dreams last night. They seem so real. This time, I was in the future. There had been a battle. One great, final battle. He was there ` the Walking Man. He'd won. And he stood on high ground, surveying the carnage. His army moved through the dead, looking for survivors. You were there, lying amongst the dead and wounded. You looked up at me with this strange look in your face. A mix of anger, surprise and fear. And then the light in your eyes began to fade. And just like that, you were gone. Help me. ('THE CUL DE SAC' THEME MUSIC) www.able.co.nz Captions were made with the support of NZ On Air. Copyright Able 2018 Let's do this. So long, Amy. What are you doing? I'm saying goodbye to Amy. Who's Amy? The chicken. I thought we discussed this. Discussed what? No more naming the chickens. Yeah, well, that was after I named Amy. You've been a good chicken. (CHICKEN CLUCKS) What? (WHISPERS) And a great friend. Right, that's it. We'll be having vegetable casserole for Tom's special birthday dinner tonight. Well, that's fine. Tom loves your vegetable casserole. No, he doesn't. Who told you that? He does ` every single time we have it. (CHICKEN CLUCKS) (GENTLE, SOLEMN MUSIC) (EXHALES) Hey, just thought I should come up here to see how you're doin'. Still dead, I see. Sorry, that sounded funnier in my head. Well, look on the bright side ` at least you don't have to have any more of Rose's vegetable casserole. Jen, I want you to know that I'll never let what happened to you happen to anyone else. I'll find a cure... somehow. I promise. Got to go. Have to check our markers. (GENTLE MUSIC CONTINUES) (OMINOUS MUSIC) (TENSE NOTE) You guys should stay away from the wood. I think there's something out there. (CLATTERING) Guys? Hello? (TENSE MUSIC) (THUD!) Who's there? (MUSIC INTENSIFIES) I can hear you. Show yourself! BOTH: Surprise! (PARTY POPPERS POP) (LAUGHS) Happy birthday! Birthday? Whose birthday is it? Yours, you nong. Are you sure? Yes, of course we're sure. You've got presents. Presents? Open mine! It's the big one. (CHUCKLES) READS: IOU a present. LAUGHS: Do you get it? Yes, extremely funny (!) OK, mine. Where did you find this? In town, from a second-hand bookshop. In the bargain bin. Thank you. Thank you both. (REFLECTIVE MUSIC) And there's cake. (HAUNTING MUSIC) (ALL CHAT, LAUGH) Can't believe somebody actually bought Dad's book. Yeah, besides Nana Carol. This is gonna come in real handy with my research. Well, I'm done. Do you wanna help me with dishes? Why do you always do that? Do what? You change the subject when Tom talks about his research. No, I don't. You both treat me like a little kid. I know what's happening. I read Dad's journal. And you understood it? I would be so insulted right now if it wasn't for the fact that you are both so stuck up yourselves. So, the Wave's getting bigger. Soon it's only gonna be the Wave, right? Right. So, what's the plan? What are we gonna do about it? Well, there's nothing we can do about it. That's not completely true. Nothing would survive on the surface, yes, but we could live underground. We would just eventually run out of food. What if we could grow our own? All we need is electricity. Where are we gonna get electricity from? The Wave ` it's a huge wall of pure energy. We could harness it. That way, we'd have more electricity than we could possibly ever use. Right, let's do that, then. I have no idea how. Oh. According to my calculations, I've got about two years to figure it out. See, there it is. That's why I hang out with both of you. (OMINOUS MUSIC) (CRICKETS CHIRP) You in here? You OK? I brought you some cake. Hello? Get away from me! (PANTS) * (BREATHES SHAKILY) You brought him into our home and fed him? Technically he's not in our house. 'Technically' this is the person who tried to feed me to a giant bug. He's sick? It's the Rage. Oh, that's just perfect (!) How far along is it? It's bad. You need to take a look, Rose. He's gonna infect us all. Not if we keep him isolated. How did you get here? (SIGHS) Things fell apart at Haven when you left. I only just made it out. Shame (!) I wandered near the city, and that's where I got sick. I found him walking in the woods. And you decided to bring him here? Yeah, genius move, dude (!) I couldn't just leave him out there. Why not? You should've told me. He can't stay. He'll die out there. Please tell her he's allowed to stay. No, Eliza's right. We were super lucky not to get infected when Jen was sick. In the morning, I go. (SIGHS) (LEAVES CRUNCH) Hello? Rose. (GASPS) Why would you do that? Do what? Sneak up on a person like that. Sorry, I didn't know I was sneaking. Let him stay. No. We can't just sit back and do nothing. I thought we were supposed to be better than that? First thing in the morning, he's gone. End of discussion. (HAUNTING MUSIC) I'm still working on Rose, but just in case I... Where are ya going? Caine took off. Mm, good, I hate long goodbyes. He won't last five minutes out there. Even better. When did you get so mean? (FOOTSTEPS RECEDE) (HAUNTING MUSIC) (MUSIC PLAYS THROUGH EARBUDS) (TURNS MUSIC OFF) Where's Tom? Um, Caine ran off, so he's gone after him. You didn't think to stop him? No. Or tell me? Mmm... Sometimes you really disappoint me. (TENSE MUSIC) (PANTS) (SINISTER MUSIC) (RAIN PATTERS) (GRUNTS) TOM: Caine! Caine. Don't touch him! Don't! (GRUNTS) Leave me alone. (GROANS) (HAUNTING MUSIC) Oi! (METAL CLANGS) Put him on the couch. OK, check for infection. Oh, he looks terrible. Can you please get out? Are you deaf? There's someone here to see you. What? Hello, Rose. Why did you hit him so hard? Because he was in the house. Yeah, why are you here, anyway? I started hearing stories about a rude and opinionated girl who kills monsters, and I thought, 'Hm, that sounds like someone I know.' Well, you can't stay. Wait, you're letting the guy who tried to kill us stay, but he has to go? Well, he could get infected. There's a town nearby. If you leave now, you could probably beat the Wave. Your friend's got the Rage. He'll end up infecting you all, unless you put an end to it. TOM: Rose! Rose, help! (OMINOUS MUSIC) (BREATHES RAGGEDLY) (GRUNTS) Caine! (GRUNTS) Get out! No! The Red Rage ` it's something in the air. It makes kids go crazy. * (GROANS) (GRUNTS) (PANTS) I think he's dead. No, he's alive. Help me get him on to the couch. He's looking better. Keeping him cool seems to help. He's not gonna beat it, mate. (SCOFFS) You don't know that. Yes, I do. I've seen this before ` up close and real personal. We need to end it now before he turns. Who is this person? He's a friend, and he's right. There's nothing we can do for Caine. Don't say that. We don't know how to treat him. And even if we did, we don't have any medicine. I can get medicine. And at least I would've tried to do something, and not just given up like we did with... Jen? That's what this is about. I understand, and I'm sorry. You did everything you could, but you're not a doctor. Can we talk? Look, I know it's a hard call to make. I don't know this person; I don't have any emotional connection. I can do what has to be done. We don't owe this person anything; quite the opposite, actually. But if 'doing what needs to be done' means what I think it means, that makes us no better than him. You should get moving. OK, then. Hey! Whoa, whoa, whoa! We're not cutting off his arm! I was just floating around the idea. Eliza was gonna cut off Caine's arm! Hey, no, I wasn't! All I'm saying is that if the infection's in the arm, maybe if we cut it off, it would slow things down a bit. And then the little freak totally lost it! Whoa, no one is cutting anyone's arm off. And Caine's staying here until I figure out what to do next. Now, can you go to the shed and grab some rope? We'll tie him down. (SCOFFS) No way. Well, it's either that or he sleeps outside. Can you do this one thing for me, please? Yep. (WIND HOWLS) (DOOR CLANGS) (PANTS) (SIGHS) (EERIE MUSIC) (BREATHES HEAVILY) (POWER SURGES) (SIGHS) 'Bout time. What took you so long? (WIND HOWLS EERILY) I'm sorry. What for? I didn't mean to come across like some kind of psycho before. Yeah, you kinda did. It's just I've seen how this turns out. Yeah, I know. I'm sorry. I understand. I don't think you do, like, not really. Ever since this whole thing began, you've been so busy taking care of your little brother and sister to really see what's going on with the world, and now I find you, hiding away here on this farm. Please, tell me how you really feel (!) You know there was an explosion? Yeah, of course. The sky glowed orange for weeks. That explosion changed everything. Something entered our world ` something much worse than anything we've ever seen before. Worse? It's` It's a feeling, a shadow. You know what I'm talking about is real. You have felt it. Don't tell me you haven't. I should probably get some sleep. Tom. I've been thinking things over. (GULPS) What are you gonna do? We're getting the hell out of here. (LAUGHS) I won't make it 10ft. Yes, you will. Where are we going? To get medicine. Fine. Oh, wait. Leave them. That way, if I turn, you'll still be safe. Let's go. Captions by Ella Wheeler.
