Hi, everyone. I'm Olivia Newton-John, and tonight I'm joining you from Sydney for what will be a most memorable music event. Behind me, the famous Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge ` two iconic images of Australia that are known throughout the world. But the picture of our country has been very different over recent weeks. Australia has been devastated by the worst bush fires in living memory. They have ravaged our countryside, taking homes, people and animals in their wake and without mercy. We have lost many lives, including those brave volunteer firefighters who gave selflessly to defend those caught in the crossfire. Everyday Australians have lost everything, hundreds of homes burnt to the ground, and the loss of our wildlife is unprecedented. Here in New South Wales, the koala population has been almost extinguished. Across the country, kangaroos, wombats, cattle, birds, pets all lost. It's staggering and so incredibly sad. The outpouring of love and support from around the world has been heartwarming, uplifting and a source of inspiration. Thank you. We have a lot to do to recover and rebuild, and we will. That's what Aussies do. You too can help by way of a donation, no matter how much you can spare. All money raised will go to the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal, who work with rural communities affected by the disaster. Please, if you can, give generously. Go to... Tonight, the entertainment industry gathers at the Sydney Olympic Stadium, where 20 years ago, the athletes of the world came together for the world's greatest sporting event. Tonight, the stadium is the scene for unforgettable music, and it's where the healing begins. A spectacular show featuring some of the world's biggest musical performers. Enjoy the rest of the evening. God bless you! (CHEERS AND APPLAUSE) Oh, man, did I tell you? It was just over at` ...Rob Craig's 40th with` ...the boys. With the team. With the missus. We were only knocking back` ...twoooo... ...three` ...cheeky little` ...celebratory` ...frisky` ...vinos. Stickies. Brewskies. You know` ...brews. Doz. Silly juice. You know how it is. Anyway` ...I felt` ...in control. Fine. Pretty sweet. I hung a right. Left. Boom. (SIREN WHOOPS) (BRAKES WHINE SOFTLY) SOFTLY: Oh no, no, no, no, no. (BREATHALYSER BEEPS) OK. That is a fail. (SIGHS SOFTLY) (EXHALES SHARPLY) * (INDISTINCT RADIO CHATTER) Drop the hose and go! The house next-door is alight. Firefighters are battling deadly wildfires across Australia right now. (INDISTINCT RADIO CHATTER) Ferocious wildfires are burning at emergency level... Nothing short of apocalyptic conditions, with flames fuelled by record-high temperatures. What we need is your support and your donations. Celebrities across the world have been sharing their heartbreak amid Australia's bushfire crisis. Australia, I love you. My heart goes out to everyone who is suffering in Australia. Oh, lemonade stand! All the money that we sell for the lemonade stand will go to our GoFundMe page for Australia. Celebrities are calling on Australians to dig deep. Comedian Celeste Barber has been leading the charge. More than $400,000 flooding in from around the world every hour ` 7000 bucks a minute. Remember that time that you guys raised $16.5 million in a day and a half? I do! We came up with an idea for other people to reach into their pockets and to fight fire with a fiver. I'm gonna put forward $1 million, and I was hoping that all of you could contribute in any way, shape or form. Every dollar counts. For whatever you would have spent for your next cup of coffee, even a dollar would help. It's so needed right now. I will be pledging $1 million. (CHEERS AND APPLAUSE) To support the bushfire relief fund. (CHEERS AND APPLAUSE) Rivalries have been put to one side, with the players coming together in Melbourne to raise money for the relief efforts. Hopefully that keeps inspiring the people to support this terrible disaster that we're going through. Mining magnate Andrew Forrest and his wife will donate $70 million. And the bushfire emergency in Australia has dominated the Global Globe awards in Los Angeles. I want to do a special call-out to the volunteer firefighters. To the people affected by the bush fires in Australia. Russel Crowe could not be here with us tonight because he is at home in Australia protecting his family from the devastating bush fires. Trying to get up to this ridge road, but we keep coming across things like that. Good night. Thank you. Please donate to Australia. Please now welcome to the stage one of the greatest voices in the world ` the divine, the beautiful, Miss Tina Arena. (CHEERS AND APPLAUSE) Big hello to everybody around the world that is watching us, all the way from Sydney. Hello to you all. Come on! (CHEERS AND APPLAUSE) # Ooh. (VOCALISES) # Your arms are warm, # but they make me feel # as if they're made # of cold, cold steel. # A simple kiss # like a turnin' key. # A little click, # and the lock's on me. # I can't move my arms, # can't lift my hands. # I won't admit to where I am, # but I know, baby, # I'm in chains. Everybody. # I'm in chains. Come on! # I pretend # I can always leave, # free to go # whenever I please, # but then the sound # of my desperate calls # echo off # these dungeon walls. # I've crossed the line # from mad to sane # a thousand times # and back again. # I love you, baby. # I'm in chains. # I'm in chains. # I'm in chains. # I'm in chains. (VOCALISES) (VOCALISES) # I should have known passing through the gate, # that once inside, I could not escape. # I never thought # this could happen to me, # I never thought this is where I'd be. # But, baby, baby, baby, # Baby, look at me. # I said, baby, baby, look at me. # I'm in chains. # Baby, baby, I'm in chains. # Baby, I'm in chains. # Baby, baby, I'm in chains. # Never thought this is where I'd be, # never thought this could happen to me. # Chains. Baby, baby, I'm in chains. (VOCALISES) # Baby, baby, I'm in chains. (VOCALISES) Here we are. (VOCALISES) (VOCALISES) # Chains. Baby, baby, I'm in chains. Come on! Are you in chain? # Baby, baby, I'm in chains. Everybody! (VOCALISES) (VOCALISES) (VOCALISES) # Chains. # Baby, baby, I'm in chains. (VOCALISES) # Baby, baby, I'm in chains. # Baby, baby, # I'm no longer # in these chains. # (CHEERS AND APPLAUSE) Still to come ` 5 Seconds of Summer and Alice Cooper. * Our next act has generously taken a break from his massive Australian tour to appear tonight. Please welcome Alice Cooper! (CHEERING, APPLAUSE) (SCHOOL BELL SOUNDS) (BAND PLAYS ALICE COOPER'S 'SCHOOL'S OUT') # Well, we got no choice, # all the girls and boys, # makin' all that noise # cos they found new toys. # Well, we can't salute ya, # can't find a flag. # If that don't suit ya, # that's a drag. Sing it! CROWD: # School's out for summer. Yeah! # School's out forever. # School's been blown # to pieces. # No more pencils, no more books. # No more teacher's dirty looks, yeah, yeah. # Well, we got no class # and we got no principals. # We got no innocence. # We can't even think of a word that rhymes. CROWD: # School's out for summer. # School's out for summer. # School's blown to pieces. # No more pencils, # no more books. # No more teacher's # dirty looks, yeah. # Out for summer, # out till fall. # We might not come back at all. OK! (GUITAR SOLO) ('SCHOOL'S OUT' CONTINUES) (BEAT CHANGES) # We don't need no education. (CHEERING, APPLAUSE) # We don't need no thought control. # No dark sarcasm in the classroom. # Teacher, leave those kids alone. # Hey! Teacher! Leave those kids alone. # All in all it's just another brick in the wall. # All in all you're just... # another break in the wall. (CHEERING, APPLAUSE) (SOMBRE MUSIC) RUSSEL CROWE: Fire is a living thing. What we think we know and what we continue to learn is an ever-revolving cycle. There are, however, simple scientific absolutes that are at play all around us ` how a bridge can span a harbour; how a plane can fly; how a boat made of steel can float. They're all examples of science that we now just take for granted. You've heard the phrases 'climate science' and 'climate change'. And while it is a deeply complex subject, there are absolutes around us that can simplify what we understand. Climate is what happens over decades, centuries, millennia. Weather is what happens day to day. It is absolutely true that there are always fluctuations in weather. How we measure the change in climate can be seen in the extremes of those fluctuations and in the increase of the number of extreme weather events. Not the only reason, but the principle reason that we, as humans, are having immeasurable negative effect on the heat balance of our global atmosphere is the use of fossil fuels ` too much carbon in the atmosphere driven principally by the overuse of oil, coal and gas. Ultimately, there's only one way to mitigate climate change, and that is to step away from all fossil fuels on a rapid timeline and convert the entire country and economy to renewable forms of energy. Industry, houses, cars, exports ` electrify what we can with systems and technologies that already exist ` wind, solar, geothermal, biomass are renewable generated hydrogen. it doesn't matter at all how many people engage in the decarbonisation of their lives individually. If we don't erase fossil fuel use as a society, then the extremes in our weather will just continue to increase. We need to focus on big decisions, on core problems, about the planet and people before politics. Now, everything I've said here can be backed up and confirmed by our brightest scientific minds. Just ask them. Our taxes have already paid for their bloody educations. Time to utilise that knowledge. It is time to act. Let's lead the way. Hi, you guys! How you going? I wanna just take this moment now to acknowledge what it is that we have been going through for months. And how we have all lent on each other because God knows the people in power haven't really done much. (CHEERING, APPLAUSE) And it is the people that are making the change. And specifically it's our volunteers. (CHEERING, APPLAUSE) They are the ones that cancel holidays to stay here (CHEERING, APPLAUSE) ...and look after us. (CHEERING, APPLAUSE) And I will speak now very confidently on behalf of a nation when I say to those volunteers, EMOTIONALLY: 'Thank you, thank you.' They are across the nation, but we have some representatives here tonight. I want everyone on their feet to say thank you to some representatives of our New South Wales RFS! (CHEERING, APPLAUSE) You will never know how grateful we are. Please, now everyone, welcome to the stage some Aussie boys! 5SOS! Yeah! (5 SECONDS OF SUMMER'S 'YOUNGBLOOD' ACOUSTIC) # Youngblood, say you want me, # say you want me out of your life, # and I'm just a dead man walking tonight. # But you need it, # yeah, you need it, # all of the time. CROWD: # Yeah, ooh, ooh, ooh. # Remember the words you told me, # love me till the day I die. # Surrender my everything # cos you made me believe you're mine. # Yeah, you used to call me baby, # now you calling me by name. # Takes one to know one, yeah, # you beat me at my own damn game. Here we go! # You push and you push and I'm pulling away, # pulling away from you. # I give and I give and I give and you take, # give and you take. # Youngblood, say you want me, say you want me # out of your life, # and I'm just a dead man walking tonight. # But you need it, # yeah, you need it, # all of the time. # Yeah, ooh, ooh, ooh. # Youngblood, say you want me, say you want me # out of your life, # and I'm just a dead man crawling tonight. # Cos I need it, yeah, I need it # all of the time. # Yeah, ooh, ooh, ooh. # Lately our conversations end like it's the last goodbye. # Yeah, one of us gets too drunk and calls about a hundred times. # So who you been calling, baby? # Nobody could take my place. # When you're looking at those strangers, # hope to God you see my face. Let me hear you, come on! # Youngblood, say you want me, say you want me... CROWD: # ...out of your life, # and I'm just a dead man crawling tonight. # Cos you need it, yeah, you need it # all of the time. # Yeah, ooh, ooh, ooh. # Youngblood, say you want me, say you want me # out of your life, # so I'm just a dead man crawling tonight. # Yeah, I need it, yeah, I need it # all of the time. # Yeah, ooh, ooh, ooh. # You push and you push and I'm pulling away, # pulling away from you. # I give and I give and I give and you take, # give and you take. # You're running around and I'm running away, # running away from you. # Youngblood, say you want me, say you want me # out of your life, # cos I'm just a dead man walking tonight. # Yeah, I need it, yeah, I need it # all of the time. # Yeah, ooh, ooh, ooh. # Youngblood, say you want me, say you want me # out of your life, # cos I'm just a dead man crawling tonight. # Yeah, I need it, yeah, I need it # all of the time. # Yeah, ooh, ooh, ooh. # You push and you push and I'm pulling away, # pulling away from you. # I give and I give and I give and you take. # Youngblood, say you want me, say you want me # out of your life, # cos I'm just a dead man walking tonight. # (CHEERING, APPLAUSE) (CHEERING, APPLAUSE) Thank you very much. Good night! (CHEERING, APPLAUSE) ...Queen and Adam Lambert. * (SIREN WAILS) (MELANCHOLY, MOVING MUSIC) A koala burned and dying of thirst, escaping flames only to cross the road into another blaze. Toni Doherty jumped out of her car and raced to save the koala before taking him to the Port Macquarie koala hospital. (KOALA WHIMPERS) Animals were all standing around ` kangaroos and all sorts of different wildlife ` trying to drink from those tiny last bits of waterways. Once we got the pouch open, a tiny little hand came out with claws on it. 'There's a pinkie in there.' Very little baby un-furred possum, so she's a ferocious mother who has clearly done her best for bub. (POIGNANT MUSIC) Because it's a few weeks after the fires, we're finding less and less animals that are still alive, but they're in much worse condition that straight after the fire. More than a billion animals have now perished. (MELANCHOLIC MUSIC) Primary that we're gonna see now are gonna be dehydration and starvation. Once you've survived this horrible fire by going into their burrows, they're going to come up to a completely different world with no idea how to exist in it, and it's going to be a world without food and water for them. That is going to be our next problem ` is there gonna be enough food for this species to survive? It's very hard to come to grips with the enormity of this catastrophe. It's nothing we've ever come across before. (UPLIFTING MUSIC) (CHEERING, APPLAUSE) (GUITAR NOTE, DRUMS CLASH) (QUEEN'S 'BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY' PIANO INTRO PLAYS) # Mama, # just killed a man ` # put a gun against his head, # pulled my trigger, now he's dead. # Mama, # life has just begun, # but now I've gone and thrown it all away. # Mama, ooh, # didn't make mean to make you cry. # If I'm not back again this time tomorrow, # carry on, carry on # as if nothing really matters. (CHEERING, APPLAUSE) # Too late ` # my time has come. # Send shivers down my spine, # my body's aching all the time. # Goodbye, everybody, # I've got to go ` # gotta leave you all behind and face the truth. # Mama, ooh, # I don't wanna die. # I sometimes I wish I'd never been born at all. (PLAYS GUITAR SOLO) (MUSIC TRANSITIONS TO QUEEN'S 'RADIO GAGA') All right, Sydney! Yeah! # I'd sit alone and watch your light ` # my only friend through teenage nights. # And everything I had to know # I heard it on my radio. # You gave them all # those old-time stars. # Through wars of worlds # invaded by Mars. # You made 'em laugh, # you made 'em cry, # you made us feel like we could fly. # So don't become # some background noise ` # a backdrop for the girls and boys. # Who just don't know or just don't care, # and just complain when you're not there. # You had your time, # you had your power, # you've yet to have your finest hour. # Radio. Here we go! # All we hear is (CROWD SINGS) # radio gaga, # radio goo-goo, # radio gaga. # All we hear is # radio gaga, # radio goo-goo. # Radio gaga. # All we hear is # radio gaga, # radio gaga. # Radio, what's new? # Radio, someone still loves you. Uno, dos, tres. # When marimba rhythms start to play, # dance with me, make me sway. # Like a lazy ocean hugs the shore, # hold me close, sway me more. # Like a flower bending in the breeze, # bend with me, # sway with ease. # When we dance, you've got a way with me. # Stay with me, # sway with me. # Other dancers may be on the floor, # dear, but my eyes will see only you. # Only you have that magic technique. # When we sway, I go weak. # I can hear the sounds of violins # long before it begins. # Make me thrill as only you know how. # Sway me smooth, # sway me now. # Other dancers may be on the floor, # dear, but my eyes will see only you. # Only you have that magic technique. # When we sway, I go weak. # I can hear the sounds of violins # long before it begins. # Make me thrill as only you know how. # Sway me smooth, # sway me now. # When marimba start to play, # hold me close, make me sway. # When we dance, you've got a way with me. # Stay with me, # sway with me. # Hi. I'm Tyson Mayr, and this is Bear, the rescue dog, who's currently rescuing koalas struggling to survive after the fires. Bear is part of the University of the Sunshine Coast's Detection Dogs for Conservation programme. (WHISTLES) Bear. This is a programme that trains rescue dogs to seek out wildlife via scent cues to aid important research on animal behaviour and habitat, particularly to vulnerable species like koalas. Good boy. Bear has several clever women in his life. Among them Dr Romane, who is a vet, his main handler and who he lives with. And this is Celine, who heads up the programme. Celine, tell me about the work you do. So, the work we do is we're a group of researchers, who are absolutely passionate about protecting wildlife, and we can't protect them unless we know where they are. Come on, Bear. (WHISTLES) Programmes like this are vital for scientific research and the conservation of koalas and other vulnerable species. If you'd like to find out more about Bear and the koala rescue programme or donate to this fantastic cause, please head to... Bear is a deadset hero. Aren't you, mate? Still to come ` k.d. lang. (SNIFFLES) It's the simple things you don't hear and the little things that you miss out on, like hearing our children. Right. (CHUCKLES) (CHUCKLES) Right. Want a hand with healthy? Open up some Sealord tuna. Ready to eat, our delicious tuna is perfect for busy lives, packed with protein and full of flavour. * (SERENE MUSIC) The night before I sensed that this was happening, I woke up that morning and I laid in my bed and thought, 'If I just lay here and go to sleep and wake up later, it's all gonna be over.' Then it wasn't. I got a phone call to say it'd jumped the highway and to get out. I was up on the roof, and that's when the first fire had come through across the valley. I kept watching it, and then it just suddenly came across the valley, come up, and then it was in the backyard, like to the back fence. Minute by minute went like it was an hour by hour, but eventually it got to the time when our life incredibly changed. I saw a look on Jase's face that I'd never seen before. Physically, he didn't look the same. And he just` he stopped, and he said, 'We've lost it all.' And I didn't care. There's a lot of other people out there doing it really, really hard, and we need to be that family that can show others that you can move on from this. I learnt that day that a house is nothing. It's the home, and you take the home in your heart with you where you go. And I didn't care from that moment on. If we lost our house, I didn't care any more, because I know that with the strength of each other and our children, and the strength of our community in Australia and the world, that` that was just be a day that will be in the past, and the future is going to be strong and amazing. (CHEERING) # I've heard there was a secret chord # that David played and it pleased the Lord. # But you don't really care for music, do you? # Well, it goes like this, # the fourth, the fifth # the minor fall, # the major lift. # The baffled king composing Hallelujah. # Hallelujah. # Hallelujah. # Hallelujah. # Hallelujah. # Well, your faith was strong, but you needed proof. # You saw her bathing on the roof. # Her beauty # and the moonlight overthrew you. # Well, she tied you to her kitchen chair. # She broke your throne # and cut your hair, # and from your lips she drew Hallelujah. # Hallelujah, # Hallelujah. # Hallelujah, (CHEERS AND APPLAUSE) # Maybe there's a god above, # but all I have ever learned from love was # how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya. # It's not a cry that you hear at night. # It's not someone who's seen the light. # It's a cold and broken Hallelujah. # Hallelujah. # Hallelujah. # Hallelujah. # Hallelujah. (CHEERS AND APPLAUSE) # Hallelujah. # Hallelujah. # Hallelujah. # Hallelujah. # Hallelujah. # Hallelujah. (CHEERS AND APPLAUSE) # Hallelujah. # (CHEERS AND APPLAUSE) The Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal, FRRR, harnesses the power of collective investment between government, business and philanthropy to improve lives of people living right across Australia. Communities like ones you've seen on screen today. The vision of FRRR is for vibrant, sustainable and adaptive communities across rural regional and remote Australia. They strongly believe that people are best placed to know what is going to work in their own communities, so they focus on helping local opportunities and challenges, and now with the devastation from the recent bush fires. Since being established in 2000, FRRR has distributed funds to more than 10,000 projects in rural and remote areas.
