Four players, three rounds, two players race, one winner takes it all. Kia ora tatou. I'm Chris Kirk and this is Brain Busters. Malo e lelei, everybody. It's your boy, Mikey Falesiu, the king of the ultimate obstacle course, where mental ability and physical agility combine with the test of smarts in a winner-takes-all prize finale. Kia ora for that, Mikey. And don't forget, you can play from home as well. So, let's meet today's brain busters! Captions by Ellen Sinclair. Captions were made with the support of NZ On Air. www.able.co.nz Able 2020 Welcome to Brain Busters. Thank you so much for joining us and our four players today, each hoping they have what it takes to get to that Brain Buster. But first, they need to tackle their specialist subject from our six options, and score enough points to avoid elimination and stay in the game. Let's meet our players. Ollie, welcome to the show. When you're not at school, what do you like to do? Uh, sports. Mostly football and basketball. Not surprised by the basketball statement, with how tall you are. Great to have you here, Ollie. And last but not least we have Juliet. Juliet, favourite sport to play? Hockey. Now, how do you not get scared, when playing hockey, that you're gonna get hit in the face? Um, well, once you get better at it, it's not as scary, yeah. That makes a lot of sense. I'd be far too scared to play, so I'm glad you play it instead of me, Juliet. Well, hey, thank you so much to all of you for coming on the show today. Let's get into our first round. It is Mega Memory. Time to get some points on the board with Mega Memory. Let's play Reo Rangatira. He pehea te pai o to mohiotanga? How good is your knowledge? If you're a rangatira of Te Reo, you'll be point scoring in Reo Rangatira. Te Atarau snuck in with that last answer for Mega Memory, but how will he do in Reo Rangatira? Let's find out. Te Atarau, please step forward. 20 points for each Te Reo-focused question. Good luck. What have you picked? Identifier. Thank you very much, Juliet. Let's play Identifier. Arrange, eliminate and identify to pass the science test and stack up the points. (DRAMATIC MUSIC) I don't know how generous we can be and give you another hockey question, but we'll see what we can do, Juliet. 20 points for each correct answer. Good luck. Great start, Juliet. Nice, Juliet. Changed that last one. Was it the correct thing to do, though? It was. Which three of these particles make up atoms? Seems pretty confident with that one. Juliet, you've got it. Let's see. Yes, indeed. Hopefully, we're all trying to not do that, though. A last-minute swap around there with Mongolia and Philippines. Should've kept it how she had it in the first place. But still, a really, really great round of Identifier. Five correct, Juliet, great job. Thank you for playing. Thank you. There's some impressive scores at the top with Te Atarau on 150 points. Now, of course, Ella and Ollie are yet to take on their specialist subject rounds, and add to what I'm sure is already a fantastic round of Brain Busters. Mikey, what's it looking like from where you are? We're looking safe, sound and secure here, Chris. But you know what you're gonna need to complete the beast, the ultimate obstacle course? You're gonna need three things ` straightforward. Number one ` upper body strength. Number two ` lower body strength. And number three, most important, always wanna tell everyone ` pure heart. I know they got this, Chris. Let's go! Kia ora, Mikey man. And don't forget, you can play from home as well. Just head online to HEIHEI games. Don't go anywhere. We will be right back after the break. * Nau mai hoki mai and welcome back to Brain Busters. Already, we have had some serious talent here on the show, and hoping to prove their mark is Ollie, next. What have you chosen for your specialist subject? Equaliser. Thank you, Ollie. Let's play Equaliser. Turn number-crunching into points scoring with mental arithmetic that rewards you with points if you can keep up with the equation. Trying to boost up some points and avoid potential elimination, Ollie, please step forward. Good luck, Ollie. Series of equations, each one you get correct is 20 points to your total. Good to go? Yep. Let's do it. 10. Nice and easy to start. 12. Also correct. 90. It's correct. 51. 27. 28. Aw. Missed out by just one there, Ollie. Great job, though, a really strong round of Equaliser. Thank you so much for playing. So, Ella, you're our last player to take on their specialist subject round. What have you chosen to play? Spellbinder. Thank you very much, Ella. Let's play Spellbinder. Word power becomes point power in this letter-by-letter spelling challenge. Stay on track for maximum rewards on the leaderboard. (DRAMATIC MUSIC) How's the spelling, Ella? Yeah, I think it's pretty good. Good. Confidence is good. So, each correct spelled word is worth 20 points. Good luck. Here's your first word. Trampoline. Lovely start. Readiness. You got it. Vacuum. That was a cool wee rhyme there. Thank you so much for playing Spellbinder! Thank you. Ella has done a fantastic job to steal the lead with 170 points. And oh so close, just in behind, is Ollie with 110 points. So missing out by just this much, Ollie, I'm sorry to say you have been eliminated on what has been a very, very impressive start to Brain Busters today. You get to go home with a $100 bank account. What are you going to do with the money? Probably save it and buy a PC. Great choice. Good luck with all the gaming I'm sure you're going to be doing with that. So, as for Ella, Te Atarau and Juliet, it is on to the next step and getting ever so close to the Brain Buster. Mikey, how good are our players today? Yeah, they're on fire, Chris. But you know what? The real question is will they be able to handle the heat here in the ultimate obstacle course, where they'll get a chance to turn their points into money? Thank you so much for that, Mikey. Of course, before we can hang out with you and get to that Brain Buster, we do have our brain-teaser. All of our players have competed in their specialist subjects, have done a fantastic job, but we do have two remaining subjects we haven't played, and they are... Sequencer and Blueprinter. So, Ella, Te Atarau and Juliet, the choice is yours for which one you would like to play. So, please cast your vote now. All right, let's start with Ella and see what she voted for. Blueprinter. Te Atarau voted for Sequencer. So it comes down to Juliet. What has she picked? Sequencer. Let's play Sequencer. Take the mystery out of history, getting things chronologically correct to win points. They've all nailed Mega Memory, plus their specialist subject rounds, but how will they do in the brain-teaser for Sequencer? Good luck to all of you. 30 points if you buzz in and get it right, but if you buzz in and get it wrong, you will lose 30 points. Let's get into it. Put these children's toys into the order in which they were invented. (BUZZER) No one answering that one, so we'll move on to the next one. In which order were these people born? Juliet. Joan of Arc, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, Lucy Lawless. Needs to answer... Missed out there. In which order were these forms of communication developed? Juliet. Braille, sign language, ear trumpet. Need to get back into contention. Has she been able to do it with that? Unfortunately not. Sorry, Juliet. In which order did these cartoons first appear on screen? Juliet. Peppa Pig, Family Guy, Teenage Ninja Turtles. (SIGHS) Need to swap around that first and third one to get it. Your last sequence is... In which order were these famous New Zealanders born? Juliet. Ernest Rutherford, Edmund Hillary, Rachel Hunter. She knows she's just gotta give it a go, how's she done? A nice way to finish. Thank you for that answer there, Juliet. So just like that, that is our brain-teaser complete. Where is the leaderboard? Let's find out. She had to give it a go but unfortunately, Juliet, you have been eliminated from Brain Busters. Your current score definitely does not reflect how well you've played on today's show, though. But guess what? You get to go home with a $100 bank account. What are you going to do with the money? I think I'm gonna save it, and then maybe go shopping for clothes. I like where your head's at. Thank you so much for playing, Juliet. So, it is Ella and Te Atarau going through to the Brain Buster. Our top two finalists will be facing the true test of power, speed, strength, and pure heart. But there can only be one winner. Stay right there, don't move a muscle, because we'll be right back after the break. * Kia ora and welcome back to Brain Busters. Our four players have taken on Mega Memory, their specialist subject round, plus the brain-teaser, and now our top two players will tackle the Brain Buster! I'm joined here with our two finalists, Ella and Te Atarau. Now, Ella, just by looking at the obstacle course, what do you think the hardest part will be? Probably the tunnel. Tunnel, cool. And how 'bout you? Probably the thingies, the pole thingies. The pole thingies. Let's get ready to fly. Here we go. Three, two, one, fly! (EXCITING MUSIC) And they're off on the Brain Stem zip line, which is only the beginning of this Brain Buster. It's 50/50 as they both slide down the Neurotransmitter on to the Molecule Steps. Easy. Te Atarau's first to the Corpus Callosum. He needs to remember this code for the next part of the race. How's Ella doing? She's got her code, while Te Atarau's already at the Hippocampus. Has he unlocked it? Yes! He's good to go. Ella's turn. Has she got it first try? Woo-hoo! But Te Atarau's rushing in front through the tunnel. He's way ahead now. Ella's just climbed the Parietal Lobe, as Te Atarau makes his way on to the Frontal Lobe. Here comes Ella, catching up quickly. No mucking around, and on to the swingy pole thingies, as Te Atarau likes to call them. He's reached the DNA Molecule ladder, and is trying different combinations to change the lights. There's Ella's. When the lights change colour, they can head for the finish. And there it is! Te Atarau can now climb down the ladder, first to race for the win, but Ella is still trying her luck with her numbers. Te Atarau, ahead at the Basal Ganglia, and Ella now just on his tail. Can she make it in on time? No! Te Atarau gets in first. Go on, Ella. There we go! What a race, as Ella completes. Bring it in, team. Ella, we'll start with you. How was the race for you? Yeah, it was really fun. You absolutely flew through that tunnel, great job. And Te Atarau, congratulations, taking out the Brain Buster. How was the race for you? Oh, it was lots of fun, yeah. Really enjoyed it? So, unfortunately, Ella, it does mean you have been eliminated from Brain Busters. Going home with a $100 bank account, though, what are you going to do with the money? Um, probably save it, or go out with some friends. Nice choice, Ella. It's been a pleasure having you on the show, thank you so much. As for Te Atarau, though, it is time to get into Amygdala. Te Atarau is here, ready for Amygdala. He had a perfect score in his Reo Rangatira round, and then a really close race for the Brain Buster, but you've made it. How does it feel to be here, finally? Oh, it feels great, yeah. Now, one thing we haven't touched on is actually the epic haircut, the bowl cut. Now, what did you dad say when he saw that? Said I look like a mushroom. (LAUGHS) Brilliant stuff. All right, so, with the points that we had earlier on, Ella had 170 and you had 150. So, you put that together and you are playing for a grand total of $320. Good luck. $32 for each correct answer. Here is your first Amygdala question. In The Cat in the Hat, what colour are the stripes on the cat's white hat? Red and white. Correct. Nice start. Which former host of The Apprentice is now a famous politician? Pass. Donald Trump. The 100m and 200m world champion Usain Bolt comes from which country? (TENSE MUSIC) Jamaica? Oh, no. Oh. It is. In the 2019 version of The Lion King, which actor voices Pumba? Pass. Don't wanna give it a guess? No. No clue. Seth Rogen is the answer. Which multipurpose handheld computing device and mobile telephone was developed by Apple Inc and released in 2007? iPhone. It is indeed the iPhone. Almost at $100 already. Nicknamed 'the sparrow from Minsk', Olga Korbut was a four-times Olympic gold medallist in which sport? Pass. Come on, gotta give it a guess. You can pick any Olympic sport, you never know. Is it shooting? Unfortunately not. Gymnastics was the answer we were looking for there. Name a natural food that has varieties of lavender, clover and Manuka. Honey. Much more confident in that answer. Yeah, you got it. In test cricket, a player must ask for a review of an umpire's decision within how many seconds? (SIGHS) Six? Pretty short time to make a decision. Is it enough time? 15 the answer. Which word can be placed before hyacinth, lettuce, and fern, to name three main aquatic weed problems in Africa? Pass. Sure you don't want to think about it, give it a quick guess? Nah, we're good. Water, the answer. Your final Amygdala question ` which city is known as 'the Edinburgh of the south', and is the second largest city in the South Island? Dunedin. You're from Dunedin, right? Yeah. So it'd be a bit awkward if you got this wrong. Is it Dunedin? Of course it is Dunedin, and that does wrap up Amygdala. As we can see on the board, $160 is all yours, Te Atarau. Thank you so much for coming on the show. It's been a pleasure having you, man. Awesome work, Te Atarau. If you think you've got what it takes to be here on Brain Busters, jump online and head to HEIHEI games. Thank you so much for watching today. We'll see you next time for more Brain Busters!
