two players race, one winner takes it all. Kia ora tatou. I'm Chris Kirk, and this is Brain Busters. Get ready for a series of escalating rounds where we test our players on memory, spelling, history, maths and more, before it all leads up to this ` the Brain Buster. Malo e lelei, everyone! It's the one, the only Mikey Falesiu, the king of the ultimate obstacle course. That's right. It's about pure strength, speed and will to see if you've got the goods to take out the Brain Buster! Thank you, Mr Brain Buster. And don't forget ` you can play from home as well. So, let's meet today's Brain Busters! (ENERGETIC ELECTRONIC MUSIC) Captions by Cameron Grigg. Captions were made with the support of NZ On Air. www.able.co.nz Copyright Able 2020 Great of you to join us today. Our four players are all hoping they have what it takes to be that last player standing, ready to take on the Amygdala. Who will it be? We will find out soon. But first, they need to tackle their specialist subject from our six options and score enough points to stay in the game. In the meantime, let's meet our players now. Firstly, Holly, welcome to the game. When you're not here on Brain Busters, what do you get up to? I play netball, jazz dancing. I have two pet guinea pigs. What are their names? Millie and Bell. Very cute. Thank you for joining us on the show. Next up, Tobey. I hear you're right into motocross. What made you get into that? I've always wanted to have a motorbike of my own, and at Christmas 2017, I got what I wanted, and, yeah. Been loving it ever since. Awesome stuff. Thank you for joining us. Ana, I hear you do a bit of karate. What belt do you currently have? I'm one away from my black belt right now. Wow! Excellent. All right. Good luck to you. And of course, Vili last up. I hear you've got a pretty interesting fact about your granddad. Yeah. He played for Fiji in the Sevens and won the 2007 cup. So what would be better ` winning the Sevens World Cup or winning Brain Busters? It's 50/50. (LAUGHS) Good to hear, Vili. All right. We have met our players, so let's get into our first round today. It is general knowledge, 90-second buzz-in round. It's Mega Memory. Let's get some points on the board for our players. 10 points for each correct answer, but they will lose 10 points if they buzz in and get it wrong. Good luck. Here comes your first question, and your time starts now. In gaming, what does VR stand for? Holly. Virtual reality. (DING!) In the movie Hunt For The Wilderpeople, what is the surname of the main character, Ricky? Tobey. Baker. (DING!) In the children's song, what exactly climbed up the waterspout? Tobey. Incy Wincy Spider. (DING!) Who captained the All Blacks at the 2019 Rugby World Cup? Tobey. Kieran Read. (DING!) Igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic` Holly. Rock. (DING!) Clams, scallops, oysters, and mussels` Tobey. Shellfish. (DING!) Which wise Jedi Knight first teaches the ways of the Force to Luke Skywalker? Ana. Dad. (SNICKERS) (BUZZER BLARES) Obi-Wan Kenobi. Tasty, mild, and Colby are all types` Ana. Flavour. (BUZZER BLARES) Cheese. What food name was given to an animated Pixar movie that` Tobey. Pass. (BUZZER BLARES) Ratatouille. In the 2019 movie, which teenager travels to a lost city of gold? Tobey. Dora the Explorer. (DING!) What part of your fingers and toes contains the protein keratin? Holly. Nails. (DING!) Rihanna wants you to make her feel like she's the only girl in the what? Tobey. The world. (DING!) What number is the popular bingo call of 'knock at the door' associated with? Holly. Just in time. 24. (BUZZER BLARES) Wasn't 24. It was 4 there. Got through a whole lot of questions. Thank you so much for playing a very speedy round of Mega Memory, everyone. Let's take a look now at the leaderboard. Answering a whole lot of questions, it's Tobey in first place on 50 points. Holly is on 20 points, and Ana and Vili share third place with zero points. So, to separate you guys, we're going to go left to right, which means Ana, you get to go first. What specialty subject have you chosen? Equaliser. Thank you very much. This is Equaliser. Turn number crunching into point scoring with mental arithmetic that rewards you with points if you can keep up with the equation. Time for her to get some points on the board. Ana, please step forward. (TENSE MUSIC) Series of equations, Ana, each worth 20 points. Good luck. Here is your first one. 0.1. (BUZZER BLARES) (BUZZER BLARES) Time up. 612 the answer there, Ana. 359. 75, remainder 4. (BUZZER BLARES) 70, the answer. 100. (DING!) 35. (DING!) Now, she's on to it. Lastly,... 46. (DING!) It's correct! Nice finish there, Ana. Little bit tricky during the top bit there, but you did really well during the middle, and then finished beautifully, so thank you so much for playing. Ana has done a great job, managing to take the lead just with 60 points. Tobey is on 50 points, Holly is on 20 points, and Vili is on zero points. So, next up to take on their specialist subject round is Vili. What have you chosen today? Sequencer. Thank you very much, Vili. This is how we play Sequencer. Take the mystery out of history, getting things chronologically correct to win points. Hoping he can get some serious points on the board now is Vili. Please step forward. (TENSE MUSIC) All right, Vili. 20 points for each correct sequence. Good luck. Here comes your first one. (READS OPTIONS) In which order were these objects invented? (PANEL CHIMES) Happy with that for his first answer. Is he right? (DINGING) Nice start, Vili. (READS OPTIONS) Put these celebrities into the order they were born. (PANEL CHIMES) Does he know his movies well? (DINGING) He does, and when they were born. (READS OPTIONS) In which order were these websites launched? (PANEL CHIMES) He's thought about swapping Amazon and Wikipedia. (DING!) (BUZZER BLARES) And he should have. Just missed out there. Next up... (READS OPTIONS) In which order were these US landmarks opened? (PANEL CHIMES) Happy with that one. Let's see. (DINGING) Yes, indeed. (READS OPTIONS) In which order did these rugby players make their All Blacks debut? Granddad watching at home, making sure he gets this one correct. (PANEL CHIMES) He's locked it in. How will Granddad feel if he gets it wrong? But you never know. Let's see. (BUZZER BLARES) (DING!) Missed that, but that's all right. Still some more questions to go. (READS OPTIONS) In which order were these foundations established? (PANEL CHIMES) Let's take a look. (DINGING) Got that right. Doing a great job, Vili. Your final sequence. (READS OPTIONS) Put these attractions into the order of when they opened. (PANEL CHIMES) Let's see how he's done for his final sequence. (BUZZER BLARES) (DING!) Just needed to swap those first two around there. But still, a very great effort there, Vili. Four correct answers. How's Granddad gonna feel about getting that rugby one wrong? Probably really bad. (LAUGHS) I'm sure he'll forgive you for it, cos you did a great job with all those other ones. So, you can take a step back to your podium. Vili is on 80 points, Ana is on 60 points, Tobey is on 50 points, and Holly is on 20 points. Of course, Tobey and Holly both have their specialty subject rounds to come, and of course, we are getting closer and closer to the Brain Buster. The question is, Mikey, are they ready for it? I think they've got this, Chris. But you know what you're gonna need to complete this bad boy? You're gonna need three things, and I'll give you three tips to help you out. Number one ` you're gonna need upper body strength. That's important. Number two ` lower body strength, and number three ` pure will. That's all you're gonna need, Chris. I'm gonna leave it right there. I think they got this. Cheers for that, Mr Brain Buster. And don't forget ` you can play from home as well. Just head online to Heihei Games. Don't go anywhere. We'll be right back right after the break. Just head online to Heihei Games. Don't go anywhere. We'll be right back right after the break. * Kia ora koutou katoa. Welcome back to Brain Busters. Just before the break, we had Ana and Vili take on their specialist subject rounds, and next up, hoping to avoid that elimination is Holly. Holly, what have you chosen as your round? Blueprinter. Thank you very much. This is Blueprinter. Put your memory under pressure for rapid recall of maps, plans, and diagrams. Blueprinter requires pin-point accuracy for point-scoring power! She can memorise her dance moves, but can she memorise today's location? Let's find out. Holly, please step forward. (TENSE MUSIC) Holly, you're gonna have 30 seconds to memorise where we are, and then you'll have 30 seconds to put in your locations. Sound good? Yep. Good luck. Let's see where we are. Rangitoto College. And your time to memorise starts now. Around 3200 students currently attend this Mairangi Bay school, making it not only New Zealand's largest secondary school, but also the largest in Australasia. This is quite a difference from when the school opened in 1956, when they had only 180 year nine and 10 students. (TENSE MUSIC) Five seconds left, Holly. That is time up. Keep those places locked into your head. And now, we have 30 seconds to put them in. Your time starts now. (DRAMATIC MUSIC) 10 seconds left to put those in, but you don't need the time. Quick to enter them. Feeling confident? Uh... Well, you did it pretty quickly, so here's hoping. Good luck. Let's see where you stand here. (DING!) Got Technology right. (DING!) English is correct. (DING!) Languages is also correct. (DING!) West Courts. (DING!) We're looking good with Performing Arts Centre. (BUZZER BLARES) Missed the General Library, though. (BUZZER BLARES) And missed the hockey turf. Amazing work done there. Five correct answers. Thank you so much for playing Blueprinter! Thank you. Holly is on 120 points, Vili is on 80 points, Ana is on 60 points, and Tobey is on 50 points. So, we only have Tobey left to take on his specialist subject round. Tobey, what have you chosen? I've chosen Spellbinder. Excellent choice. This is how we play Spellbinder. Word power becomes point power in this letter-by-letter spelling challenge. Stay on track for maximum rewards on the leaderboard. He was quick in Mega Memory, but how is his spelling? Let's find out now. Tobey, please take a step forward. (TENSE MUSIC) Really strong start in Mega Memory, man. Good luck now for Spellbinder. Here is your first word. Spell 'deserving.' 'Deserving.' (DING!) It's correct. 'Redeem.' (DING!) Also correct. 'Photogenic.' (DING!) 'Opposition.' (DING!) 'Segments.' (DING!) Incredible stuff. Next up, 'threshold.' Oh, no. (BUZZER BLARES) Knows what he did wrong there. Didn't need the extra H. No. Your final word ` 'esplanade.' ...A-R-T. (BUZZER BLARES) A-D-E was the final one there. Ah. But, hey. A very strong start, Tobey, for Spellbinder. Five correct answers. Great job! Tobey is in first place with 150 points. Holly has 120 points, Vili has 80 points, and Ana has 60 points, which does mean, Ana, I'm sorry to say but you have been eliminated from Brain Busters. Thank you so much for playing. You get to go home with a $100 bank account, so what are you going to use the money for? Um, badges at school. What are they for? So you pay for a badge at the office, and then you get a sheet of paper, which has a whole bunch of activities on them, and I slowly complete them and then get the badge in assembly. What a cool way to spend the money! Thank you so much for playing, Ana. So, as for Holly, Tobey, and Vili, it is one step closer to taking on that Brain Buster, and Maiki, the excitement ` it's real. Pure excitement, Chris! That's right. Our top two players will be joining me very soon here in my kingdom to turn their points into money. Kia ora, brother. And before we can get to that, we do need to eliminate another player, and how we do that is with the Brain Teaser. Now, each of our players have all taken on their specialty subject rounds, which leaves us with two remaining subjects, and they are Identifier and Reo Rangatira. So, Holly, Tobey, and Vili, the choice is now yours. Please lock in which one you would like to play. All of our players have cast their votes, so let's reveal and see what they chose. Holly? Identifier. Identifier. Tobey picked... Identifier. Identifier as well. And Vili picked... Identifier. Three for three! Let's play Identifier. Arrange, eliminate, and identify to pass the science test and stack up the points. 30 points up for grabs for each correct identified question. But you will lose 30 points if you get it wrong. So this could really change the balance of the game. Good luck, and here comes your first one. (READS ANSWERS) (READS QUESTION) Holly. Inner core, outer core, crust. Keeping the same order. (BUZZER BLARES) But incorrect there. Number two. Tobey. Um... Ligaments, tongue, and teeth. Locked in those answers. Is he correct? (BUZZER BLARES) (GROANS) No. Tobey loses his points as well. Moving on to our third one. Vili. Stoat, bat, fantail. Can he jump up from third place? (DINGING) He can! Vili. Wind, animals, and evaporation. Can he take the lead now? (DINGING) (BUZZER BLARES) Just need evaporation, but it's not correct. It was water. The last one ` (READS ANSWERS) (READS QUESTION) Tobey. Um... Hamilton, Napier, Invercargill. He has the lead. Can this boost up his points even more? (BUZZER BLARES) (DING!) (GROANS) Unfortunately not. And that does wrap up our Brain Teaser. Some movement happened on the leaderboard, but where is it now standing? Let's take a look. Holly and Tobey share the lead with 90 points and are safe through to the next round. Vili is on 80 points, and that does mean, Vili, unfortunately, you have been eliminated from Brain Busters. Thank you so much for playing, and I'll tell you what ` I'll trade you a $100 bank account if you can get me a signed shirt by your grandad. Does that sound like a deal? Deal. Excellent. What are you going to use the money for? (LAUGHS) Half of it to put in my savings, and the other half between my friends and family. I think that's a very cool idea, Vili. Thank you so much for playing. So as for Holly and Tobey, they are now on to the Brain Buster! Yes, that's right, Chris. Our top two players will be facing the true test of power, strength, speed, and pure heart. The catch is there can only be one winner. Who's it gonna be? Don't move a muscle. We'll be right back after the break. Calculator! (CHRIS READS QUESTION) * Calculator! Financial term for the money you make from an investment is interest. Kia ora and welcome back to Brain Busters. Our four players have taken on Mega Memory, their specialist subject round, plus the Brain Teaser. And now, our top two players will tackle the Brain Buster! (TENSE ELECTRONIC MUSIC) I'm joined here with our two finalists, Holly and Tobey. Now, Holly, how are you feeling? Nervous, but mainly excited. Excited is good. And Tobey, we good? Uh, yeah. Nervous, but pretty excited to see if I can win this and then go on to the Amygdala. Here we go. Three, two, one,... fly! Here they go! Holly and Tobey. Who will take out the Brain Buster? Down the neurotransmitters and straight on to the molecule steps. It's going to be a close race. They are quick! Tobey's got his code and climbs down the corpus callosum, with Holly just behind him. Has Tobey remembered his code? Yes! He's got it. Up he goes, climbing the parietal lobe. But what about Holly? She's got it too. Can she catch up to Tobey, who's nearly at the tunnel? She's picking up real speed here. Both now through the tunnel. Could be a close call. I think Tobey is worried now. They are both on the frontal lobe, trying to get to the DNA molecule ladder to use the correct combination to change the lights, which means the race is really on. Tobey's made it, but can't seem to get his numbers right. Holly's caught up. And the lights change! Tobey's still trying. She's off to the finish, on to the basal ganglia. Tobey didn't quite get his code, but he's coming in hot. Who's it gonna be? Holly's won it! Great race, guys. Wow! What a turn of events, and what a race it was. Holly, firstly, bring it in this way. Tobey, you managed to have the lead for that, then Holly, out of nowhere, comes and steals it from you! How does it feel? Oh, it's pretty sad, but she did a good job, and it was a good experience. Absolutely. You've done a fantastic job. Second for Brain Busters today, and of course going home with a $100 bank account. So what are you going to do with the money? Uh, save up for a PC. Great choice. Thank you so much for playing, Tobey. Congratulations! You've taken it out, and managed to get that code straight away. How on Earth did you do that? Yeah, that was pretty lucky. (LAUGHS) Congratulations on taking out Brain Busters. So it does mean we are getting ready for that Amygdala! The final round is here. It is time for Holly to take on the Amygdala. Congratulations once again, Holly, for making it here. You've come all the way from Timaru. We've got to make them proud, all right? Now, of course, you are playing today for your 90 points that you have accumulated, plus Tobey's points, which was 90 also, so $180 is the maximum amount you can win today. How are we feeling? Nervous, but, yeah, good. You got this. All right. Here comes your first Amygdala question. What is the second-largest cat, referred to as king of beasts? Lion? (DING!) Is correct. Nice start. Which movie stars small yellow creatures who have existed since the beginning of time to serve history's most despicable masters? The Minions. (DING!) Also correct. We're two for two. What is the name of the town in the centre of the North Island, situated on the Desert Road, that is home to a large army base? Um... Tauranga? (BUZZER BLARES) Incorrect. It is Waiouru. Who was the first African-American President of the United States of America? Barack Obama. (DING!) Back on the right train. Which company, now making smart phones, began in 1938 as a grocery trading store in Korea? Samsung? Was that a guess, or do you think you know it? Yeah, we'll see. Let's have a look. (DING!) Correct! Which vehicular football video game involves players aiming to hit the ball into the opposing team's goal using their cars? Pass. You sure you don't want to give it a guess? No idea. (BUZZER BLARES) Rocket League, the correct answer. Which singer-songwriter, with the surname 'Knowles', first achieved fame as the lead singer of Destiny's Child? Beyonce Knowles? Little bit nervous with that answer. Yeah. Think you've got it, though? I think so. (DING!) Nice work! At which school, according to the famous story, did William Webb Ellis pick up the ball and run? Pass. Feel free to give it a guess. No idea. (BUZZER BLARES) Rugby was the answer there. Goi cuon, also known in English as Vietnamese spring rolls, are wrapped in a case made from what? Rice paper. Very quick on that answer. Do we have it? (DING!) Yes! Your final Amygdala question. How many movies have been released in the Toy Story franchise? Four. Have you watched them all? No. (LAUGHS) You may be correct, though. Might have been. For the final Amygdala question, is the answer four? (DING!) Yes, it is! A great guess to finish there, Holly. Congratulations. Let's take a look at how much you've scored ` $126. A really, really strong effort for the final round. Holly, what are you going to do with the money? Um, lots of chocolate. (LAUGHS) Nice. Probably some presents for friends and family too. Great choices there, Holly. Well, hey, thank you so much for coming on the show. It's been amazing having you. And if you want to be on Brain Busters, just like Holly, jump online and head to Heihei Games. Thank you so much for joining us on the show. We'll see you next time for more Brain Busters! www.able.co.nz Copyright Able 2020
