two players race, and one winner takes it all. Kia ora tatou. I'm Chris Kirk, and this is Brain Busters. Well, from history to hip-hop ` our players all hope they've got what it takes to tackle... the brain buster. What's up, everybody? It's your boy, Mikey Falesiu ` the king of the ultimate obstacle course where mental ability and physical agility combine with a test of smarts in our winner takes all prize finale. Kia ora, Mikey, and don't forget ` you can play from home as well. So, let's meet today's Brain Busters! (ENERGETIC ELECTRONIC MUSIC) Captions by Lillie Balfour. Captions were made with the support of NZ On Air. www.able.co.nz Copyright Able 2020 Welcome to Brain Busters. Great to have you here. Four more players, today, are all hoping they've got what it takes to tackle the brain buster. First, they will tackle our specialist subject rounds where they will pick from our six options. Score enough points, hoping to avoid that elimination. So, let's meet our players today. First up ` Matthew. Thanks for coming on the show. Ah, now, you've travelled to Europe. What was amazing about Europe? Um, the fact that I got to see lots of my family in Scotland, and that we went to cool different places and saw lots of sights. Epic! Well, maybe some Europe knowledge could pop up in the quiz today. Who knows? Maybe. We'll find out. Thank you for coming on the show. We also have Sophie. Sophie represented Canterbury in softball over in Indonesia. What was that experience like? That was really good. We went to Jakarta, and it was good to experience the game against different countries. Cool. Well, thank you so much for coming on the show, Sophie. We also have Ameelea ` a self-taught dancer. How did you manage to teach yourself how to dance? Um, I was always really interested in a lot of dance shows that I'd see on Netflix, and annoy my parents by just dancing round the house, so I just thought I might as well just try it. So, do you think what you've learnt, you could teach me? Ahhhh, we'll see. Love the vote of confidence, Ameelea. Really appreciate it. (LAUGHS) Thanks for coming on the show. And last but not least, we do have Ryan. Football lover. Yep. Watch the Premier league? Yep. Favourite team? Liverpool. That is what I like to hear! Good man! All right. Let's get into our first round ` today it is mega memory. We're gonna put 90 seconds on the clock. 10 points for each correct answer, but if you buzz in and get it wrong, you will lose 10 points. Good luck to all of you. Here comes your first mega memory question. Which board game has players using letter tiles to build words for points? Ryan. Scrabble. (POSITIVE CHIME) Totara, rimu, kahikatea are all kinds of what? Ryan. Trees. (POSITIVE CHIME) What are the bangers in the British dish of bangers and mash? Ameelea. Sausages. (POSITIVE CHIME) If a piece of electrical equipment is marked '240V', what does the V stand` Ryan. (POSITIVE CHIME) According to the musical, who had an amazing technicolour dreamcoat? (SIREN RINGS) Time is up. I'll accept an answer. (ALL CHUCKLE AWKWARDLY) No one? (NEGATIVE CHIME) CHUCKLES: The correct answer there was Joseph. Thank you so much for playing our first round of mega memory. Let's take a look at the leader board now. Ryan has first place with 60 points. Matthew and Sophie share second with 20 points, and Ameelea has 10 points. So, Ameelea, congratulations. You get the privilege of going first for your specialty subject round. What have you chosen? Blueprinter. Thank you very much, Ameelea. Let's play Blueprinter. Put your memory under pressure for rapid recall of maps, plans and diagrams. Blueprinter require pinpoint accuracy for point-scoring power. Time to test her memory now. Ameelea, please step forward. (INTENSE ELECTRONIC MUSIC) So, 30 seconds, Ameelea, to memorise where we are and input all the locations, and then 30 seconds to put them in. Good luck. Let's take a look at where we are. We're at Te Papa. All the best. Your time starts now. This six storey museum has 36,000 square metres of space for the public, which is the size of three rugby fields. Some of the Tongarewa collection includes the Gallipoli exhibition and the only colossal squid on display in the world. (INTENSE MUSIC BUILDS) Ten seconds left there, Ameelea. (CLOCK TICKS) It's five. And time. Hopefully you managed to lock all of those in. Good luck. Your time to input starts now. (DRAMATIC MUSIC) (INPUT BEEPS) (INPUT BEEPS) (INPUT BEEPS) (INPUT BEEPS) (INPUT BEEPS) Plenty of time ` 10 seconds left, Ameelea. (INPUT BEEPS) (CLOCK TICKS LOUDLY) Where does that last one go? There it is. All right. How do you think you went, Ameelea? Um... Hopefully pretty good. Hopefully pretty good. All right, fingers crossed. Let's take a look at our first one now. (NEGATIVE CHIME) Not the best start, but that's all right. There's still plenty more opportunity. (POSITIVE CHIME) There we go. Got Gallipoli. (POSITIVE CHIME) And Wellington foyer. (NEGATIVE CHIME) Missed out on Nest. (NEGATIVE CHIME) And the theatre. (NEGATIVE CHIME) Couldn't get the Earthquake house, either. (NEGATIVE CHIME) (GROANS) and missed the Guardians. Started really strong though, Ameelea. Hey, thank you so much for playing Blueprinter. Ryan is in first with 60 points. Ameelea has jumped up to second with 50 points, and Matthew and Sophie have 20 points each for third place. So, now we move on to Matthew taking on his specialist subject. What have you chosen, Matthew? Equaliser. Excellent choice. Let's play Equaliser. (INTENSE ELECTRONIC MUSIC) Turn number-crunching into point-scoring with mental arithmetic that rewards you with points if you can keep up with the equation. Let's do some maths now! Matthew, please step forward. (DRAMATIC MUSIC) Each equation, Matthew, is worth 20 points. Best of luck. Let's get some more points for you on the board. Yep. Your first equation is... (BLUBBERS LIPS) 16. (POSITIVE CHIME) You got it. 28. (POSITIVE CHIME) That's the one. 115. (POSITIVE CHIME) You're doing great, Matthew. 43. (POSITIVE CHIME) (EXHALES SHARPLY) (BUZZER SOUNDS) Time's up. 392, the answer there. 25.25. (NEGATIVE CHIME) (GROANS) 25 was the answer. Ohhh. So close with that one. And your final Equaliser equation is... 102. (NEGATIVE CHIME) 101 was the answer there. Oh, those last two equations were just so, so close, Matthew. Should also say ` your facial expressions whilst trying to work out some of those equations was absolutely brilliant. Thank you so much for playing Equaliser, Matthew. Matthew now has the lead with 100 points. Ryan is on 60, Ameelea has 50 and Sophie has 20 points. So, two of our players have taken on their specialist subject, and after the break two more will take on their chosen rounds, and we get one step closer to the Brain Buster. But Mikey, can they handle it? We'll see if they can handle it, Chris. But you know what they're gonna need to complete the ultimate obstacle course? That's right ` three tips I'm gonna give them. Number one ` upper body strength. Number two ` lower body strength, and number three, most important ` pure heart. I know they've got this, Chris. Prepare them. Cheers for that, Mike. And don't forget, you can play from home as well. Just head online to ` Don't go anywhere. We'll be right back with more Brain Busters. (ENERGETIC MUSIC) * (ENERGISED MUSIC) Welcome back to Brain Busters. Just before the break, we had Ameelea and Matthew tackle their specialist subject rounds. And next to take to the floor is Sophie. What have you chosen, Sophie? Identifier. Thank you very much, Sophie. This is how we play Identifier. Arrange, eliminate and identify to pass the science test and stack up the points. All right, Sophie. Please step forward. (DRAMATIC ELECTRONIC MUSIC) All right. Let's keep that smile going and get heaps of points with this one, all right, Sophie? Hopefully. Excellent. 20 points for each correct answer. Here we go. This is your first Identifier question. (INTENSE MUSIC) (DEVICE BEEPS) Just the one swap there for Sophie. (THREE POSITIVE CHIMES) And she's got it. Which three of these creatures are native to Australia? (INTENSE MUSIC) (DEVICE BEEPS) Can we make it two for two? (THREE POSITIVE CHIMES) Sure can. (READS QUESTION) (INTENSE MUSIC) (DEVICE BEEPS) Locked in that first one pretty quick; had to think about the next two though. (POSITIVE CHIME) (TWO NEGATIVE CHIMES) And that is why ` unfortunately missing out those. Argon and Krypton is what we were looking for. (READS QUESTION) (DEVICE BEEPS) You sure you don't want to put in ice cream flavour? LAUGHS: Pretty sure. LAUGHS: OK. Let's take a look. (THREE POSITIVE CHIMES) Nice stuff, Sophie. (READS QUESTION) (DEVICE BEEPS) (THREE POSITIVE CHIMES) Fantastic job, Sophie. (READS QUESTION) (DEVICE BEEPS) How have we done for our final one? (THREE POSITIVE CHIMES) We've got it! Great stuff, Sophie. How do you think you went? Pretty good. Better than I thought. You did an amazing job. Thank you so much for playing Identifier. Sophie now has the lead with 120 points. Matthew is on 100, Ryan has 60 and Ameelea has 50. So, we do just have Ryan left to tackle his specialist subject round. What have you chosen, Ryan? Spellbinder. Thank you very much, Ryan. Let's play Spellbinder. Word power becomes point power in this letter by letter spelling challenge. Stay on track for maximum rewards on the leader board. Let's test his spelling. Now, Ryan, please step forward. (DRAMATIC MUSIC) Best of luck, Ryan. Each correctly spelled word is worth 20 points. Here we go. Tempted. (POSITIVE CHIME) That's the start we're after. Marsupial. (POSITIVE CHIME) Nice work. Anxiety. (POSITIVE CHIME) Crescent. (POSITIVE CHIME) Really great stuff, Ryan. Suggestions. (POSITIVE CHIME) Crepe. Can you please use that in a sentence? A crepe is a thinner type of pancake. (POSITIVE CHIME) Your final Spellbinder word is... metallic. (POSITIVE CHIME) That is correct. A big smile on his face, as he should, because congratulations, Ryan. You've scored a perfect round there for Spellbinder. Thank you so much for playing. Thank you. That perfect score has boosted Ryan into first place with 200 points. Sophie has 120. Matthew is on 100 points, and Ameelea has 50 points. So, Ameelea, I'm really, really sorry to tell you, but you have been eliminated from Brain Busters today. It's been great having you on the show. And, of course, you get to go home with a $100 bank account. So, what are you going to do with that money? Knowing me, I'll probably go to the dairy and spend it all on TNTs. (BOTH LAUGH) I love the honesty there, Ameelea. Thank you so much for playing. And as for our remaining three players, it is one step closer to tackling that Brain Buster. The odds just got better for our three remaining players, which means very soon our top two finalists will be joining me here in the Kingdom to turn their points into dollars. Thank you very much for that, Mikey. And before we can get to that money, plus the Brain Buster, we have a thing called the Brain Teaser. So, all of our players have gone through their specialist subject rounds, and we are left with two remaining subjects ` today they are Reo Rangatira and Sequencer. So, Matthew, Sophie and Ryan, the choice is up to you what you'd like to pick. Please cast your votes now. (SERIOUS MUSIC) All right, everyone chosen their votes. Let's take a look and see what Matthew picked. Sophie voted for... So it's down to Ryan, who chose... Thank you very much everyone. Let's play Sequencer. (INTENSE MUSIC) Take the mystery out of history ` getting things chronologically correct to win points. Now, Ryan is way out in front at the moment ` so Matthew and Sophie, if you want to avoid elimination, we need some big answers from you two. 30 points for each correct one, but if you buzz in and get it wrong, you'll lose 30 points. All the best. Here comes your first sequence. In what order did these animated movies get released from earliest` Sophie. LEGO Movie, Toy Story 4, Trolls. We know she needs the points. Has she got this first one right? (POSITIVE CHIME) (TWO NEGATIVE CHIMES) No! Needed to swap Trolls for Toy Story 4. Next up ` put these sports balls in order from smallest to biggest. Ryan. Golf ball, hockey ball, netball. Can he extend that lead even more? (THREE POSITIVE CHIMES) Yes, Ryan can. (READS ANSWERS) In what order did these people's significant others become the prime minister of New Zealand? Matthew. Bronagh Key, Mary English, and Clarke Gayford. Matthew knows he needs some points. Has he got this one? (THREE POSITIVE CHIMES) Indeed. (READS ANSWERS) Where were the last three Rugby World Cups held, starting with the most recent? Sophie. Japan, England, New Zealand. Can she make up for that one before? (THREE POSITIVE CHIMES) Yes, she can. Your last sequence is... (READS ANSWERS) Order these Taylor Swift songs from earlier to most recent. Ryan. You Belong With Me, Shake it Off, The Man. Big Taylor Swift fan are you, Ryan? No. (ALL LAUGH) Well, let's see if you got it right though. (THREE POSITIVE CHIMES) You sure have. Great job there, Ryan, and that does wrap up our Brain Teaser round. So, after that, let's take a look at the leaderboard. Ryan has boosted that score up to 260 points. Matthew is on 130, and right behind him is Sophie with 120 points. So, just missing out by 10 points. Sophie, I'm very sorry to tell you, you have been eliminated from Brain Busters. You get to go home with a $100 bank account. What are you gonna do with the money? Probably put it towards sport. Sport, what kind of sport? Probably softball. Great choice. Thank you so much, Sophie. It's been great having you on the show. So, congratulations Matthew and Ryan. It is on to the Brain Buster. MIKEY: Our top two finalists will be battling it out very soon to take on the ultimate obstacle course to see who's got the power, strength, speed and pure heart. But as we all know, there can only be one winner at the end of the day. Who's it gonna be? Ooh, stay right there. We'll be right back after the break. Calculator! * Calculator! The $10 note. Nau mai hoki mai. Welcome back to Brain Busters. It's time for our two remaining players to tackle the Brain Buster. I'm joined here with our two finalists, Matthew and Ryan. Well done, boys, on making it this far. Now, Matthew, just by looking at the course, what's the one part that looks hard for you? The DNA ladder, because the switches are luck-based on what combination you get. Nice, and how about you, Ryan? How are you with speed, man? I think I'm gonna go pretty good through the tunnel, up the ladder ` all that. Nice, the cerebellum. Well, I love your confidence, man. Less talk, more action. And let's get ready to fly. In three, two, one. Fly! Ryan and Matthew zip line their way into the Brain Buster. Ryan's got a massive lead in terms of points, but it all comes down to who wins this race. And Ryan is first to twirl his way down the neurotransmitter. Matthew right behind him as they both tackle the molecule steps. Both players did very well in their specialty rounds, so hopefully they can keep that code in their brain for the hippocampus. Here's Ryan entering the code. Perfection! Matthew a bit behind, coming through the corpus callosum as Ryan heads up the parietal lobe. Has Matthew got the code? He does! Ryan making easy work of the web tunnel. Matthew up the parietal lobe now, as Ryan shoots across the frontal lobe. He's leading in points, and he is leading this race. Matthew up into the tunnel, it's not over yet! Ryan just about at the DNA molecule ladder. And here come Matthew across the frontal lobe. Whoa! Careful, buddy. Matthew narrowly avoiding disaster there, but he's back on track. Meanwhile, Ryan has activated the molecule switches and is heading for the finish. Matthew now trying to find the correct combination as well. Ryan on to the basal ganglia. Ryan takes this one out! Matthew not far behind. Awesome effort, boys! Nice stuff. Here comes Matthew. And done. What a race. Matthew, bring it in this way. We'll start firstly with you, Matthew. Can we just say what a monkey you were across those bars? Almost had a wee fall, but you're all good. Did you enjoy the race? Yeah. It was really fun. Glad to hear. Hey, thank you so much for coming on to Brain Busters. Second place today. Get to go home with a $100 bank account. What are you going to do with the money? Um, probably put it towards a new computer. Nice choice. It's been great having you on the show here, Matthew. Ryan, congratulations. Thank you. You've taken out Brain Busters for today. How does that feel? Great, honestly. Yeah. You said you were looking forward to that tunnel. You went straight through it as well. Yeah, right under. Amazing stuff. So, for Ryan, it is now on to the amygdala. Ryan, welcome to the amygdala. Firstly, what a round it has been for you here on Brain Busters today. Started with Mega Memory ` you smashed everyone with 60 points in that, and then you got a perfect, should I say, word perfect score for your specialist subject, and now you are here, ready to take on the amygdala. Yeah. So, let's see what you are playing for. Matthew, of course, scored 130 points, and you scored 260 points. If we add that together, Ryan, you are playing for $390. A lot of money. How does that sound? Yeah. Really good. Shall we try get all of it? Yep. Let's go. All right. Here comes your first amygdala question. Which auto brand offers the Hilux, Fortuna, Highlander and Granvia? Toyota. (POSITIVE CHIME) What type of fruit is a red delicious? Apple. Bit of a guess, was it ` that one? Yeah. Done pretty good so far. Is apple correct? (POSITIVE CHIME) You got it. What is the catchphrase said by the tree-like life form in Guardians of the Galaxy? I am Groot. Character in question actually played by Vin Diesel. Did he say 'I am Groot'? (POSITIVE CHIME) Nice stuff! What name is given to any of the systems of stars and interstellar matter that make up the universe? Galaxies. Know much about the night sky and the stars? A little bit, yeah. (INTENSE MUSIC) (POSITIVE CHIME) Correct! What name is given to the set of instructions, data or programmes used to operate computers? Coding. (NEGATIVE CHIME) Software was the answer we were looking for there. Very close, though. How many playable squares are on a chess board? Uh... 64. What made you get to that number? Eight by eight. You sure it's eight by eight? Yes. I think so. Eight eights are 64 ` is it the correct answer? (POSITIVE CHIME) You got it. Here is your final amygdala question ` which part of your body is usually used to operate a keyboard? Your hands. (INTENSE MUSIC) Seems like a logical answer. (POSITIVE CHIME) Of course it's hands! Congratulations, Ryan. Take a look there ` $312. It is all yours. Awesome. So, what are you gonna do with the money? I think I'm gonna save up for an iPhone. Great choice. Good luck with that.
