Four players, three rounds, two players race, and one winner takes it all. Kia ora tatou. I'm Chris Kirk, and this is Brain Busters. Get ready for a series of escalating rounds where we test our players on maths, history, Te Reo, science and more, before it all leads up to this ` the Brain Buster. Malo e lelei, everyone. It's the one and only Mikey Falesiu, the king of the ultimate obstacle course, where mental ability and physical agility combine in a winner-takes-all prize finale. Cheers for that, Mikey. And don't forget ` you can play from home as well. So, let's meet today's Brain Busters! (ENERGETIC ELECTRONIC MUSIC) Captions by Julie Taylor. Captions were made with the support of NZ On Air. www.able.co.nz Copyright Able 2020 Nau mai, haere mai, and welcome to Brain Busters. Today, we have four very eager players ready to take on the challenge. First, our players will tackle their specialist subject round from our six options, hopefully score enough points to avoid elimination and stay in the game. So let's meet those players, starting with Hannah. Kia ora, Hannah. Welcome to Brain Busters. Thanks. Excited to be here? Yeah. So, when you're not at school, what do you get up to? Play football or cricket. Are you gonna get right back into that? Yeah. Nice. Thank you for playing. We also have Sofia. Sofia, why did you wanna come on Brain Busters? Cos I thought it sounded like a really fun experience, and I thought it would be a nice way to... expand my... brain as well. Nice! Speaking of experiences, heard you had a pretty big one six years ago ` moved from the US of A. What was that like? It was a bit scary at first, but now I quite like it here. And it's quite fun and relaxed and, yeah, good too. Cool. Great to have you, Sofia. We also have Lorenze. Kia ora. Welcome to the game, Lorenze. What do you like to get up to? I like to play basketball, rugby, and I like to game. Oh, nice. What game's your favourite one? NBA 2K20. Nice choice. And we also have Isaac. Isaac, what's your favourite thing to do? I like playing sports and reading books. Nice. What are you currently reading? CHERUB series. Great book series, Isaac. I've actually read it myself as well. Would recommend it to anyone. But thank you so much for coming, guys, today. So, let's get into our first round. It is Mega Memory. 10 points for every correct answer. But if you buzz in and get it wrong, you will lose 10 points as well. Of course, 90 seconds on the clock, so let's get some quick answers done. All right. Your time starts... now. Which hot breakfast dish consists mainly of rolled oats? Hannah. Porridge. (DING!) Where in the human body is marrow found? Isaac. Shoulders. (DING! DING!) I need more, please. In your bones in your shoulders. (DING!) Correct. Which significant piece of scientific equipment is named after Edwin Hubble? Sofia. Hela` Hubbard` Hubble telescope. (DING!) In which continent would you find New Zealand? Sofia. Uh, Australasia. (BUZZ!) Oceania. Which electronic game company publishes the Pokemon series? Sofia. Nintendo. (DING!) In which country is the Statue of Liberty located? Sofia. The United States of America. (CHUCKLES) (DING!) A Chinese Checkers board is in the shape of a star with how many points? Isaac. Five. (BUZZ!) Six. What country formed a union with England in 1707? Hannah. European Union. (BUZZ!) Scotland. Which movie character is the most famous role played by Daniel Radcliffe? Isaac. Harry Potter. (DING!) Does a standard modern piano have 68 or 88 keys? Sofia. 68. (BUZZ!) Incorrect. It was 88 there, and that is the buzzer for time. Thank you so much for playing our first round. Let's see where the scoreboard is after Mega Memory. We have a tie at the top with Sofia and Isaac on 10 points. And we also have another tie with Hannah and Lorenze yet to score. So, because we do have a tie, Hannah, you are going to go first. So what is your chosen round? Equaliser. Thank you. Let's play Equaliser. Turn number-crunching in to point-scoring with mental arithmetic that rewards you with points if you can keep up with the equation. Let's get some points on the board for Hannah. Please step forward. (DRAMATIC MUSIC) Think your maths is pretty good, Hannah? Yeah. That's what we like to hear. So, each correct equation is worth 20 points. Good luck. Here comes your first one. 42. (DING!) Correct. (BUZZ!) 305 the answer there. (BUZZ!) So close. 23. Pass. (BUZZ!) -16 the answer. Lastly,... (DING!) Is the correct answer. Nice finish there, Hannah. Some tricky equations in there, but thank you so much for playing Equaliser. After some tricky equations, Hannah is now on 40 points and in the lead. Sofia is on 10. Isaac's on 10. And Lorenze is yet to score. So I think it's about time that he does score now. Lorenze, what subject have you chosen? Reo Rangatira. Thank you very much. Let's play Reo Rangatira. He pehea te pai o to mohiotanga? How good is your knowledge? If you're a rangatira of Te Reo, you'll be point-scoring in Reo Rangatira. Having a go at Reo Rangatira is Lorenze. Please step forward. (DRAMATIC MUSIC) A series of Te Reo-focused questions, Lorenze. All the best. Each is worth 20 points. Here is number one. If you say 'haere ra' to someone, are they staying or leaving? Leaving. (DING!) That's the one. Was Sandra Lee or Georgina Beyer the first Maori woman to win a general electorate seat, then lead a kaupapa Maori party into parliament? Sandra Lee. (DING!) That's correct. What is a Maori word for genealogy? Pass. (BUZZ!) Ko wai te wahine rongonui i karanga, 'Kia whakatane aue ahau.' Pass. (BUZZ!) Maunga Hikurangi is in the tribal area of which iwi? Um... Te Arawa? (BUZZ!) The final answer there for Reo Rangatira. Thank you, Lorenze for playing Reo Rangatira. We have a tie again, with Hannah and Lorenze both on 40 points, and Sofia and Isaac also on 10 points. So we still have Isaac and Sofia to take on their specialist subject rounds, but who will be going to the Brain Buster, Mikey? I'm excited to see who's gonna join me here, Chris, on the ultimate obstacle course. But you're gonna need three things to complete this bad boy. Number one ` upper-body strength, yeah, buddy. Number two ` lower-body strength. And number three ` most important ` pure heart. I believe in them, Chris. Thanks for that, Mikey. And don't forget, you can play from home as well. Just head online to... Don't go anywhere. I think this is gonna get interesting. We'll see you right after the break. Don't go anywhere. I think this is gonna get interesting. We'll see you right after the break. Kia ora koutou. Nau mai hoki mai to Brain Busters. Just before the break, we had Hannah and Lorenze take on their specialist subject rounds. And next to have a go is Sofia. What have you picked, Sofia? Identifier. Thank you very much. Let's see how we play Identifier. Arrange, eliminate and identify to pass the science test and stack up the points. Hoping she will not be eliminated now is Sofia. Please step forward. (DRAMATIC MUSIC) Welcome to the front, Sofia. Why did we pick Identifier? I picked Identifier cos I quite enjoy science, and I thought it would be quite a fun topic to do. Awesome. Well, I hope you do very well. 20 points for each correct identified answer. Here we go. (SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC) First lot of answers locked in. How's she done? Missing out on isobars there. (SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC) Locked in again. Let's get some points on the board. Just needed to swap around those bottom two. (SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC) Had a last-minute change there. Was it the right thing to do? Should've stuck with the original one. (SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC) All right. How have we done on this one? Always so close with that final one. All right, Sofia. Points on the board. Yes indeed. So, that does wrap up Identifier. Sofia, thank you so much for playing. Hannah and Lorenze still have first place with 40 points. Sofia is on 30 points. And Isaac is on 10 points. So, last but not least, Isaac, it is now your turn. What subject have you chosen? I've chosen Sequencer. Thank you very much, Isaac. Let's play Sequencer. Take the mystery out of history, getting things chronologically correct to win points. Last to take on his specialist subject round, Isaac, please step forward. (DRAMATIC MUSIC) All right, Isaac. Last but not least. Good luck, and let's hope we can avoid that elimination place. In which order were these commercial cell phones first released? Can we get some more points on the board for Isaac? Yes, we can. Put these computer storage technologies into order of invention from earliest to latest. Thought about swapping the CD-ROM there. But has he got it right by leaving it? He has. In what order did these songs make number one on the New Zealand charts? Some Kiwi classics there. He's shaking his head. Knows what he did wrong. Needed to swap around Royals with Soaked. In which order were these buildings constructed? Does he know his buildings? Isaac sure does. Wee fist bump. In which order were these book series first published? Said he was a keen reader at the start, so does he know this one? Yes indeed. A great end to the round there. Thank you so much for playing, Isaac. Four correct. What a great round of Sequencer. Isaac is in first place with 90 points. Hannah and Lorenze are on 40 points. And Sofia is on 30 points. So missing out just today, it is Sofia. Unfortunately, you have been eliminated from Brain Busters. Not going home empty-handed, though. $100 bank account ` it's all yours. What are you gonna do with the money? Well, Chris, I'm gonna put half of it in my savings account and spend the other half on a new pair of jeans. Excellent choice. Sofia, it's been a pleasure having you on the show. As for our three remaining players, it's getting one step closer to that Brain Buster. And, Mikey, I reckon they're gonna give you a run for your money on this one. The odds just got better for our three remaining players, because very soon the top two finalists will be joining me here in the kingdom to turn their points into money. Thank you very much, Mikey. Of course, there's just one thing stopping them from getting to the Brain Buster, and that is, of course, the Brain Teaser. Now, all of our players today have taken on their specialist subject rounds, and we have two remaining options for our players to choose ` Spellbinder, and your second option is Blueprinter. So, now Hannah, Lorenze and Isaac, please cast your votes for which one you would like to play. Thank you all for voting. Let's start with Hannah and see what you voted for. You chose Spellbinder. Let's go now to Isaac and see what he picked. He chose Blueprinter. So, Lorenze, the vote is up to you. And you chose Spellbinder. So this is how we play Spellbinder. Word power becomes point power in this letter-by-letter spelling challenge. Stay on track for maximum rewards on the leader board. So, if you buzz in and spell the word correctly, you'll get 30 points. But if you buzz in and spell the word wrong, you will lose 30 points. Let's get into it with our first word. Spell 'genius'. Lorenze. (DING!) Strong start for Lorenze. Chorus. Hannah. (DING!) Cellophane. (BUZZ!) No one wanting to lock that one in. Moving on. Quarrelling. Hannah. (BUZZ!) Just needed one more 'R' there, Hannah, sorry. Generous. Lorenze. (DING!) Is correct. And that does wrap up our Spellbinder round. Thank you so much for playing that one. Let's see our leader board now. Answering a few words correctly and boosting him to the top of the leader board now is Lorenze with 100 points. Isaac is in second on 90 points. And Hannah finishes third with 40 points. So, Hannah, you have been eliminated from Brain Busters. Thank you so much for coming on to the show. $100 bank account is coming your way, so what are you going to do with the money? Some new cricket gear. Great choice. Good luck for the season coming up. So we now have Lorenze and Isaac ready to tackle the Brain Buster. Yes, that's right. Our top two finalists will be joining me very soon to face the true test of power, strength, speed and pure heart. The catch is there can only be one winner. Who's it gonna be? Stay right there. Don't move a muscle. We'll be right back after the break. We asked you what China's currency is called. The answer is yuan. Kia ora, and welcome back to Brain Busters. Our four players have taken on Mega Memory, their specialist subject round, plus the Brain Teaser, and now our top two players will tackle the Brain Buster. I'm joined here with our two finalists, Lorenze and Isaac. Now, Lorenze, how are you with heights? And what part of the obstacle course are you looking forward to? Yeah, I guess I'm OK with heights, and I'm most looking forward to the rope tunnel thing. Awesome. Well, we'll see how you go on that. And Isaac? I'm feeling great today, and I'm excited to hit the buzzer at the end. Wow. I'm loving the energy, guys. Well, let's jump on to our zip lines, and let's get ready to fly. Here we go. Three, two, one, go! Across the brainstem zip line, Lorenze and Isaac arrive at the Brain Buster. Only 10 points separate these two on the leader board, so will it be a close race? Both players down the neurotransmitters and across the molecule steps. Off to a quick start, boys. Lorenze checking out his code and wastes no time entering the corpus collosum. Isaac right behind him and going at pace. Lorenze engages the hippocampus. Has he remembered the code? Yes! And Isaac? No worries there. Both our players showing their mental agility, but will they have the physical strength to make it up the parietal lobe? Lorenze is up first and straight into the tunnel. Isaac not far behind, though. Both players making very good time here. Lorenze still ahead, crossing the frontal lobe on his way to the DNA molecule ladder. There's Isaac too. They each have two switches, and they must find the correct combination to be able to move on with the race. It's neck and neck right now. Whoever gets the right combination first will have a huge advantage. Lorenze has got it. He's now free to head down the ladder and on to the basal ganglia. Isaac's still working out the combination, but it's too late as Lorenze makes it to the end. Great competitive race from both players. (LAUGHS) What a finish there by Isaac, putting everything in. Great effort to both of ya. Bring it in, guys. Well, fantastic stuff. Isaac, firstly, let's start with you. Wow. That finish was incredible. Are we all good? Yeah, I'm fine. (LAUGHS) Great to hear. Congratulations on coming to Brain Busters. How's the experience been? Yeah, it's been great, yeah. Great to hear. And, of course, going home with a $100 bank account. What are you gonna do with the money? Think I'm gonna save it for the future, definitely. Great idea, Isaac. And, Lorenze, congratulations. You are today's Brain Buster. How does that feel? It feels nice, yeah. Excellent. So it does mean Lorenze is now on to tackling Amygdala. Lorenze has made it to the final round, the Amygdala. Congratulations. So, with the combined total of Isaac's points, which was 90, and yours, which was 100, we are playing for $190. Each correct question is going to be worth $19, so let's see if we can get right up there. How are we feeling? OK. All right. Let's get into it, Lorenze. Here is your first Amygdala question. What shape is a tiddlywink? Triangle? (BUZZ!) Circle. In which set of instruments would you find a crash cymbal and high hats? Drum. (DING!) It's correct. Money on the board. In Tex-Mex food, what does the 'Tex' stand for? Pass, I guess. (BUZZ!) Texas the answer. Which appliance manufacturer is known by the initials F and P? Um... I dunno. (BUZZ!) Fisher & Paykel. Which singer-songwriter with the surname Mars was born Peter Gene Hernandez? Bruno Mars. That was a much quicker answer. Is it the correct one? (DING!) Yes indeed. There we go. What brand of footwear has the slogan 'Off the wall'? Vans. Again, very quick. Has he got it? (DING!) Now we're on a roll. In computing, 'ROM' stands for 'read only' what? Message? Is it 'read only message'? (BUZZ!) Unfortunately not. It was memory. What is the chemical symbol for Xenon? Zn. Is it Zn? (BUZZ!) No, Xe... Oh. ...is what it is. In the Disney movie Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, how many of the seven dwarfs wore glasses? Three? One-in-seven chance of getting it right. (BUZZ!) Not three. One was the correct answer there. And your final Amygdala question. 9 volt, AAA and AA are all types of what? Batteries. Final answer for the Amygdala ` is the answer batteries? (DING!) Indeed it is. There we go, Lorenze. Thank you so much for playing. As we take a look ` $76 there on the board. Don't worry, though, Lorenze. We're definitely going to put that up to $100 for you. So thank you so much for playing. What are you going to do with the money? Save it up for a phone. Great choice. Well, hey, thank you. Really appreciate having you on the show. It's been great. If you wanna be here on Brain Busters just like Lorenze, jump online and head to Heihei Games. That's it from us. We'll see you tomorrow with more Brain Busters.
