- We start with four, but in the end, there can be only one. Kia ora. I'm Chris Kirk, and this is Brain Busters. Who has what it takes to get through the rounds and end up at this ` the Brain Buster? - What's up, everybody! It's your boy, Mikey Falesiu ` the king of the ultimate obstacle course. Today, our top two contestants will be tried, tested, and pressed through the fire to see if they've got what it takes to be our Brain Buster. (ENERGETIC ELECTRONIC MUSIC) Captions by Cameron Grigg. Captions were made with the support of NZ On Air. www.able.co.nz Copyright Able 2020 - Thanks for joining us on Brain Busters today. Our four players are very eager, hoping to take on the challenge and be the last player standing. Who will it be? First, they need to tackle their specialist subject from our six options and score enough points to avoid elimination and stay in the game. So, let's meet our players! Firstly, Oliver. Welcome to the show. Favourite food, Oliver? - Uh, fish and chips. - Kiwi classic. Tomato sauce, obviously? - Yeah. - How much is too much, though? - There's never too much. - (LAUGHS) Never too much! Great answer, Oliver. Great to have you with us. We also have Tanisha. Welcome to the show, Tanisha. Represented Canterbury for squash. That's pretty cool! Can you tell me ` I've always wanted to know about the different colours with the balls. What's the story with that? - Um, blues are easier to hit and double yellows are a lot harder for the tension. - Ah, right! The more you know. Maybe a squash question could pop up today. Who knows? Good luck to you, Tanisha. Kahlia. - Hi. - A keen volleyball player. Now, I hear we had a bit of an incident, though. - So, basically, there was a trial, and I was kind of like, 'Yeah, I'm so cool. I'm totally going to hit this ball.' And then, I jumped and I hit the net, not the ball. The ball was way gone. I got my hand stuck in the net. It was great (!) (SNICKERS) - Did we make the team, though? - (LAUGHS) - We'll move on. It's OK, Kahlia. Don't worry about it. (LAUGHS) Good luck for Brain Busters. And last but not least, we have Josh. Future trampolinist. Throughout lockdown, managed to work out how to do a frontflip on a trampoline. How did you do that? - Uh, using YouTube and teaching myself. - Did we have any minor slip-ups at all? - Uh, I've had multiple. - Multiple. Not today, though, on Brain Busters. All right, Josh? - Yep. Good luck to you. So, let's get into our first round of the day. It's Mega Memory. 90 seconds on the clock. Each correct answer is worth 10 points. Buzz in and get it wrong, you will lose 10 points. Here we go. Your time for Mega Memory starts... now. Binary code consists of combinations of ones` Josh. - Zero and one. (DING!) - What fuel do most car engines run on? Josh. - Petrol. (DING!) - What colour is the logo for Twitter? Oliver. - Blue. (DING!) - How many grams in a kilogram? Josh. - 1000. (DING!) - Patrick Tuipulotu is best known for which sport? Josh. - Rugby? (DING!) - Which salad vegetable comes in varieties like cos and iceberg? Tanisha. - Lettuce. (DING!) - What type of battling toy is a Beyblade Burst? Josh. - An arena toy. (BUZZER BLARES) - Spinning top. In which month was Queen Elizabeth II born? Oliver. - April. (DING!) - What is the favourite snack of the animated cat Garfield? Kahlia. - Lasagna. (DING!) - What is Earth's largest continent? Oliver. - Asia. (DING!) - Who is the host of the UK version of the game show The Chase? Oliver. - Um... Not sure. I... (BUZZER BLARES) - Bradley Walsh. In physics, what comes in two types ` transverse and longitudinal? Tanisha. - Waves. (DING!) - What is the Maori name for Christchurch? Kahlia. - Otautahi. (DING!) - Who is the father of Miley Cyrus? Tanisha. - Billy Ray Cyrus. (DING!) - Is correct, and ends a well-done Mega Memory round. Great job to all of you. Let's take a look at the leaderboard. So, points were gained and some points were lost in Mega Memory, but it is Tanisha and Josh who share the lead with 30 points, and Oliver and Kahlia have second place with 20 points. So, a very competitive game already as we move into our specialist subject rounds. First to take the challenge is Oliver. Oliver, what are we playing? - Sequencer. - Cheers for that, Oliver. Let's play Sequencer. Currently sitting in second-equal. Can he get up to first? Let's find out. Oliver, please step forward. Now, Oliver, just quickly want to check. Tomato sauce on fish and chips. Tomato sauce on anything? Are we one of those kind of guys? - Um, most things. - Most things. Ice cream? Nothing crazy like that? - Nah. - No? OK. Good. All right. Well, hey. We're going to get into Sequencer now. 20 points for each correct sequence. Good luck. Here comes your first one. In what order were these people knighted? Locked in our first sequence. (PANEL DINGS) It's correct. Nice start, Oliver. Excluding dwarf planet Pluto, list the three outermost planets from the sun furthest to nearest. Locking in those planets. Is our order correct? (BUZZER BLARES) Unfortunately not. In what order did these countries first join the British Commonwealth? Locking that one. Really need some points here, Oliver. (PANEL DINGS) And that will do it. Nice work. In which order were these Star Wars movies released? Star Wars fan, Oliver? - Nope. - (LAUGHS) Let's see if you're right, though. (PANEL DINGS) You are! Good work. And that does wrap up our Sequencer specialist subject round for you, Oliver. Thank you very much for playing. Hopefully done enough to avoid elimination. - Yep. - 60 points added to Oliver's score, so he now has the lead with 80. Tanisha and Josh have 30, and Kahlia has 20. So, Kahlia is next with her subject. What have you picked, Kahlia? - Spellbinder. - Thank you very much, Kahlia. Let's play Spellbinder. Hoping to not get caught by some mystery net and spell all the words correctly, it's Kahlia. Please step forward. - Hi. - Hey, Kahlia. How are you feeling about taking on Spellbinder? - I'm excited. - Good to hear. So, each word is worth 20 points. Good luck. Here comes your first one. 'Daughter.' (DING!) Quick off the bat. Nice stuff. 'Combined.' (DING!) Really good. 'Mountainous.' (DING!) Super speedy spelling. 'Ailment.' (DING!) You got it! 'Honour.' (DING!) 'Gargoyle.' (DING!) Final word, Kahlia, for a perfect score. 'Parasite.' (DING!) Didn't even look like getting it wrong. Seven out of seven. Kahlia, great job. Thank you so much for playing Spellbinder! Adding 140 points to her score, Kahlia now has first place with 160. Oliver has 80 points. Tanisha has 30 points, and so does Josh. So, our players already proving they've got what it takes, but Mikey, are they ready for the Brain Buster? - Hopefully they're ready, Chris, because the Brain Buster is always ready. Don't underestimate this beast, because looks are deceiving. If they want to turn their points into dollars, it ain't gonna be easy! - No, it won't, Mikey. Thank you very much for that. And don't forget ` of course, you can play from home as well. Just head online to Heihei Games. Don't go anywhere. We'll be right back after the break. * - Nau mai hoki mai. Welcome back to Brain Busters. Just before the break, we had Oliver and Kahlia take on their specialist subject rounds, and next to come forward and hopefully avoid elimination is Tanisha. So, what subject are we playing, Tanisha? - Identifier. - Thank you very much. Let's play Identifier. So, earlier, in squash, we found out that the double yellow dot ball is very hard, but will our Identifier be very hard today for Tanisha? Let's find out. Please step forward. All right, Tanisha. We need some really big points here to avoid elimination. Good luck. Here comes your first Identifier. That was a quick answer. (PANEL DINGS) And is correct. Nice work, Tanisha. Another quick lock-in there by Tanisha. And she's done it! Locked in that one. Let's see how you've done, Tanisha. Really, really strong start here. Changed her answer a bit there. Needed to reread the question maybe, and I think we might have got it. Let's see. (PANEL DINGING) Yes. Nice work there, Tanisha. Hope for a strong finish here, Tanisha. (PANEL DINGING) Yeah, really nice work there, Tanisha. Thank you so much for playing. Five correct answers ` great job! Kahlia still holds first place with 160. Tanisha has jumped up to second place with 130 points, Oliver has 80, and Josh has 30 points. So it is just Josh left to go for his specialist subject. What have you chosen today, Josh? - Equaliser. - Thank you very much, Josh. This is how we play Equaliser. Trying to flip his way out of elimination, it's Josh. Please step forward. All right, Josh. Need a really big round here from you, OK? - Mm-hmm. - 20 points for each correct equation. Here comes your first one. - 27. (DING!) - Correct! - 33. (DING!) - You got it. - 360. (DING!) - That's the one. - 380. (DING!) - Really good stuff here, Josh. Square your answer. Equals? - 4900. (DING!) - Is correct. Your final equaliser. - 101. (DING!) - 101 is correct! A really great job for you as well, Josh, in Equaliser. Six out of a possible seven. Really nice work. So, some strong rounds across the board for our specialist subjects. Where are they all now on the leaderboard? Let's find out. With that perfect score in her round, Kahlia still has first place with 160 points. Josh has jumped up to second with 150, Tanisha has 130, and Oliver is in fourth with 80 points. So, Oliver, sorry to say, you have been eliminated from Brain Busters. Great having you on the show. Go home with a $100 bank account, of course, so what are you going to do with the money? - Um, probably just buy food. - Not like a year's supply of tomato sauce or anything, right? - Maybe. - (LAUGHS) Hey, your money. You can do whatever you want with it, Oliver. It's been great having you on the show. Thank you so much. But as for our remaining three players, it is on to the next round, and one step closer to beating that Brain Buster. - Ooh! One down, three to go, which means very soon, our top two competitors will be taking on the Brain Buster. So you better get ready, because it's about to go down! - Cheers for that, Mikey, and before it can go down, the scores do have to go up because we have our Brain Teaser. Our players have all tackled their four specialist subjects, and we have two remaining. So, our options today are... Blueprinter or Reo Rangatira. So, Tanisha, Kahlia and Josh, the choice is all yours. Please vote for which one you'd like to play now. All of our votes locked in, so let's see. First, Tanisha... voted for Blueprinter. Kahlia chose... Blueprinter as well, and Josh... and it's Blueprinter! So, let's play Blueprinter. Good luck. Tanisha currently in that elimination spot, so need some points from you, and from all of our players, to be fair. So, 30 points up for grabs if you get it right. But, buzz in, get it wrong, you will lose 30 points. Good luck. You're gonna have 30 seconds on the clock to memorise. Let's see where we are today. The beautiful Kaikoura. Good luck. Your time starts now. Known for its whales and the kekeno fur seals that live on the coast, Kaikoura is a small town on the east coast of the South Island. In Maori legend, Maui planted his foot on the Kaikoura Peninsula to ground himself as he fished up the North Island from the sea. (TENSE MUSIC) Ten seconds left. (CLOCK TICKS) (SIREN SOUNDS) That's time! Hopefully, you've managed to get all those in your memory, so let's play. Please tell me where this is. Tanisha. - Clifftop Walk. - Fast lock-in ` the Clifftop Walk. Is it? (DING!) You got it. Nice work. Moving on! Kahlia. - Whaleway? - Is it Whaleway? Yes, indeed. Nice work, Kahlia. Next one, please. Josh. - Toilets? - Is it the toilets? (DING!) Yes! As we move on to the next one. Tanisha. - Lookout. - Very quick on that again. Is it the lookout? (DING!) Yes! Here it is. Josh. - Churchill Street. - Churchill Street... (DING!) ...is correct! And that does wrap up our Blueprinter. So, thank you so much for taking on the Brain Teaser, everyone. Let's take a look now at the leaderboard. After a strong Brain Teaser round, it is Josh on 210 points. Then, we have a tie! Tanisha and Kahlia both share 190 points. So, we know what that means ` we now go to our sudden death tiebreaker. Tanisha and Kahlia, I'll ask you both a question. First person to buzz in and get it right will go through to the Brain Buster with Josh. But if you buzz in and get it wrong, your opponent will go through in your place. Are you both ready? Deep breaths. Good luck. Which is the highest peak in Asia and the world? Tanisha. - Mt Everest. (DING!) - Mt Everest is correct. Just like that, Tanisha, congratulations. You are through to the Brain Buster with Josh. Kahlia, though, I'm sorry to say` - (GIGGLES) - Giggling away, which is great to see. You have been eliminated from Brain Busters. Thank you so much for playing. You get to go home with a $100 bank account, of course, so what are you going to do with that money? - Uh, I have no clue. I'm going to put it towards travelling, I think. - I think travelling will be very, very cool. Kahlia, thank you so much for playing. It's been great having you on. So, as mentioned before, Tanisha and Josh ` congratulations. It's on to the Brain Buster. - This is where champions are made. Only the best of the best make it this far. But only one will be victorious at the end of the day. Who's it going to be? Don't move a muscle or even blink. We'll be right back. Don't move a muscle or even blink. We'll be right back. * - Kia ora, and welcome back to Brain Busters. Our four players have gone through Mega Memory, they've tackled their specialist subject, and now, it's on to the big one. It's the Brain Buster! - I'm joined here with our two final competitors ` Tanisha and Josh. Now, Tanisha, you seem to be quite the TikTok fanatic. - Yeah. - You reckon that will help you out here in the Brain Buster today? - Hopefully. - Let's hope so. And Josh, what's one part of the course you're looking forward to, man? - Uh, the under-over-under. - The under-over-under? We'll go with that, man. Well, all the best, team. Let's jump on our ziplines and let's get ready to rock and roll. Here we go. Feet up. Three, two, one, go! Tanisha and Josh enter the Brain Buster, and whoa! Tanisha a little overeager there. Gotta get unclipped from your harness first. There you go, and down the neurotransmitter. Here comes Josh, and the race is on. Oh, no! Tanisha, your code! You're gonna have to go back for your code. Josh has got his. He should only have to go through the Corpus Callosum once if he can remember it. Tanisha now getting her code as Josh punches his into the Hippocampus console. Back through the Corpus Callosum goes Tanisha, and Josh nails the code! Does Tanisha have it now? Yes! Up the Parietal Lobe now. Tanisha trying to catch up. And Tanisha is up! The tide has turned again! Tanisha crawling through the tunnel. There you go, Josh. Not too far behind. Tanisha out on to the Frontal Lobe. She's close to the DNA Molecule ladder. Here comes Josh, though. These molecule switches ` it's all about luck. The combination could be just one switch away. And there it is! Tanisha's side has been activated. Now, it's just the Basal Ganglia that stands between her and victory. Josh activates his switch, but Tanisha makes it to the end with a big smile on her face. What an unbelievable race this was, Chris. - Nice work, Josh. There we go, as Josh finishes the race. Tanisha, I'll ask you to just come across this way. Firstly, what a race by both of you. So, we had some highs and a couple of lows there as well. Josh, we'll start with you. Raced off to a great lead, just got caught on that climbing wall, bud. - Yes. - Really amazing job there. You kept pushing through. Unfortunately, eliminated from Brain Busters, but get to go home with a $100 bank account. What are you gonna do with the money? - I'll probably just save it for travelling, or whatever. - Nice choice, Josh. Thanks for coming on to the show. Tanisha, very lucky for you. Missed that code at the start, had to go back through, but managed to come away with a win. How are you feeling? - Um, pretty good, yeah. - So, turns out TikTok can help you win Brain Busters. - Good warm-up. (LAUGHS) - Exactly. There you go. Hey, congratulations once again. So, it is on to now the Amygdala! Tanisha, congratulations. You're here at the Amygdala. So, I've got to ask ` how's the whole journey been so far? Would it be like a double yellow dot squash ball, or more towards the blue ball? - Um... (SIGHS) in the middle somewhere. - In the middle. So, what would that be? Like, a green? - Uh, a red. (LAUGHS) - Right. Well, it may get a little bit harder, though, as we go into Amygdala. So, you're playing for a total prize pool of... $410. Of course, you scored 200 points and Josh scored 210 points, so you're actually stealing Josh's points, combining it for that $410. Good luck. Here comes your first Amygdala question. What is the name of the purple dinosaur who had their own TV show? - Barney. (DING!) - Nice work. In a leap year, how many total days are there in the months of January and February? - 58. (BUZZER BLARES) - 60 was our answer. Which cricket team was New Zealand's opponent during the underarm incident of 1981? - Australia? - Do you watch a bit of cricket? - No. - Australia is definitely a big rival of New Zealand in cricket, and many sports. But were they on this day? (DING!) Of course they were, and we still will never forgive them. Approximately what percentage of the population of New Zealand is Maori? - A third? - 'A third' is the answer locked in. (BUZZER BLARES) No. We're looking for 15% roughly. Which almost 5000-year-old board game has players moving pieces between 24 triangles? - Chess? - 'Chess' the answer locked in. Confident in that one? - 50/50. - 50/50. What do you think it could have been? - Checkers. - Chess or checkers. All right. (BUZZER BLARES) No, it wasn't chess, and I will tell you it wasn't checkers either. The correct answer was backgammon. Next up, which Shakespearean character cries, 'My kingdom for a horse?' - Romeo. - That sounded like a bit of a guess. - (LAUGHS) Yeah. - That the only Shakespeare you know? - No, but I just can't think of any. - OK. It's always worth a guess, though, so let's see. (BUZZER BLARES) Unfortunately not. King Richard III. Which Disney movie follows a woman disguising herself as a man to join the Chinese Imperial Army? - Mulan. - That's your answer? - Yep. - OK. Mulan is locked in. (TENSE MUSIC) Need this one to get some points, get some dollars. (DING!) It is Mulan. Last up, what is the name of the ocean that lies to the east of New Zealand? - Pacific. - Pacific Ocean. It's our final Amygdala. We've had some hard questions in here. Hopefully, we can get this one to finish up. Have we got it? (DING!) Yes, we have! That does wrap up Amygdala. As we take a look ` $164, Tanisha. It is all yours. Great work battling through a tough Amygdala. What are you gonna do with the money? - Um, I'm probably gonna save it to bring my family over from Thailand. - Very cool choice. I'll have to make sure I have a game of squash with you as well, Tanisha. Thank you so much for playing. - Thank you. - It's been a pleasure. - Well done, Tanisha. Well, if you think you can take on the Brain Buster just like our girl, Tanisha, jump online and head to Heihei Games. - Thank you so much for joining us today. We'll see you next time with more Brain Busters! www.able.co.nz Copyright Able 2020 Thank you, New Zealand On Air!
