- Hip hop to history, maths to memory, kia ora, I'm Chris Kirk, and this is Brain Busters. We start with four players, but one-by-one they will be eliminated. Who will last and who can take on the power of the Brain Buster? - Live and direct, it's your man, Mikey Falesiu. Many have conquered; many have not. Many have fallen, but have gotten back up and given their best efforts. Chris, I hope they've got their A-game ready. Let's do it. - Thank you very much, Mikey. And, as always, we'd love for you to play from home as well. So, let's meet today's Brain Busters. Captions by Joshua Tait Captions were made with the support of NZ On Air. www.able.co.nz Copyright Able 2020 And welcome to Brain Busters, thank you so much for joining us today. We have four more players, each hoping they've got what it takes to be the last one standing and to be called the Ultimate Brain Buster. First, our players will tackle their specialist subject round from our six options, hopefully score enough points to avoid elimination and stay in the game. Let's meet our players. First up, Lexie. Thank you so much for joining us on the show, Lexie. Now, I hear you're into mosaics ` quite the arts and crafts. What do you like to make? - I like doing mosaics on bottles and I like painting like cartoons on canvases. - Cool. Quite the creative. Great to have you here, Lexie. Thank you so much. We also have Reuben. Now, Reuben ` undefeated singles and doubles tennis champion. Pretty impressive stuff. Who's your favourite tennis player? - Rafael Nadal. - Rafael Nadal. Why Rafael Nadal? - Left-handed. - Ah! Oh, a leftie! So am I! Look at that. Very cool, Rueben. Thank you for joining us on the show. We also have Callum. Callum, right into computer programming. So, um, what's your what's your favourite? Do you like a bit of Python or bit of HTML or CSS? - I'm into JavaScript. - Oh, nah, I don't know that one. I thought I was trying to sound really cool as if I knew what I was talking about. But Callum, I have no idea. But, hey, what I do know is that it's great to have you on the show. Look forward to playing with you Callum. And we also have Estelle. Estelle, why do you want to be here on Brain Busters? - Just to have some fun, I guess. - Excellent. And quite the dancer. What's your favourite dancing style? - I don't have a favourite. - Too many to choose from? All right. Thank you for joining us as well. All right. We've now meet our players, so let's get into our first round of the day. It's a 90-second general knowledge buzz in quiz. It's Mega Memory. 10 points for each correct answer, but you will lose 10 points if you buzz in and get it wrong. Good luck and let's get those points stacking up. Here comes your first question. Your time starts now. Which nationality is the rapper Drake? Reuben. - Canadian. - What piece of New Zealand currency does Sir Edmund Hillary appear on? Estelle? The $5 note. - In which sport does Joseph Parker professionally compete? Reuben? - Boxing. - In which ocean are the islands of Hawaii? Callum? - The Pacific Ocean. - Which Australian soap is set in and around Ramsay Street? Reuben. - Neighbours. - What is the most common element in the universe? (BUZZER SOUNDS) Hydrogen. Bluebird and Pringles are both brands of what? Estelle. - Chips. - What would you be racing if you had a Scalextric set? (KLAXON SOUNDS) Time's up. I'll accept an answer, though. Slot cars was the answer to our final mega memory question. Thank you so much for playing. Let's take a look now at the leaderboard. Reuben has the lead with 30 points. Estelle is in second on 20 points. Callum has 10 points and Lexie is yet to score. So, we're going to hope to change that now as we move into our specialist subjects. Because, Lexie, you are going first. What have you chosen to play today? - Blueprinter. - Thank you very much, Lexie. Let's play Blueprinter. Time to test her memory, Lexie, please step forward. So, Lexi, why Blueprinter? - I feel like I have a pretty good memory. - That is good to hear. So, you're gonna have 30 seconds to memorise where we are today. And then we have a further 30 seconds to input all the coordinates. You got that? - Yep. - Perfect. OK, good luck. And let's see where we are. We're at London Heathrow ` Terminal Two, to be specific. So, let's get into it. Your time starts now. One of the world's busiest airports, Heathrow, can fly you to 203 destinations across 84 countries. In 2018, a record 8.1 million passengers passed through Heathrow, which means an average of over 210,000 passengers each day. 10 seconds left, Lexie. (KLAXON SOUNDS) That is time up. Quick 30 seconds. Hopefully you've managed to store it all in the head. You're now gonna have 30 seconds to put in your answers. Good luck. Here comes your time now. Halfway. And, just like that, all done. Didn't even need the 30 seconds. Happy with your answers, Lexie? - I think so. - Cool. All right, let's get under way and see how we are for our first one. Nice work, got Air New Zealand. And Air Canada, really great start, Lexie. Got that third one as well. Make that four. Doing really good. Missed the Trolleys, though. And Security. Come on, Premium Check In. No, couldn't quite get that. Really strong start, though, in that one. Thank you so much for playing Blueprinter, Lexie. Lexie now has the lead with 80 points. Reuben is on 30, Estelle is on 20 and Callum has 10 points. So it is now Callum's turn. Callum, what have you chosen to play today? - Identifier. - Thank you very much, Callum. Let's play Identifier. He can identify the code, but can he identify today's answers? Let's find out. Callum please step forward. (TENSE MUSIC) All the best, Callum. Let's get some points on the board. 20 points for each correct answer. Good luck. Here we go. Let's see if we get a good start. Sure do. Nice work. Right, can we go good again? Absolutely. Nice, Callum. Nice work. Yeah, pretty sure it wasn't a Poison Dart Frog there. Locked in those answers. Are they right? Yes. Really nice work, Callum. Your last one, Callum, is... three microorganisms. This one to finish strong. Yes, indeed. Great job, Callum. Thank you so much for playing Identifier. Five total correct, so really great answers. Good job. Callum has now jumped to the lead with 110 points. Lexie is on 80 points, Reuben is on 30 points and Estelle is on 20 points. Of course, Reuben and Estelle still have to tackle their specialist subject rounds, and then once they've done that, they are one step closer to taking on the Brain Buster. - A great challenge lays ahead for our top two competitors where they'll be climbing up the Parietal Lobe, racing through the Corpus Callosum and flying on the Brainstem Zip-line. But only one will get the chance to turn their points into money,... money,... mo' money. - Thanks for that, Mikey Money Man. And don't forget, you can play from home as well. Just head online to Hei Hei games. We'd love for you to head there. And we'd also love for you to stick around right after the break. See you soon. * Nau mai, hoki mai. Welcome back to Brain Busters, thank you so much for joining us again. Just before the break, we had two of our players take on their specialist subject round. And next to have a go is Estelle. So, Estelle, what have you chosen to play today? - Spellbinder. - Thank you very much, Estelle. Let's play Spellbinder. Needing to avoid elimination, it is Estelle. Please step forward. (TENSE MUSIC) Some big words need to be spelled if you want to avoid elimination and move into that next round, all right, Estelle? - Yup. - Good luck. Each worth 20 points. Here comes your first one. Celebrating. Great job. Prevail. Correct. Appliance. Also correct. Inspirational. You've got it. Nice work. Frequent. Really great spelling and your last word is ` Philosophical. S-O-P-H-I-C-A-L to finish that one. But, hey, a really, really great job. A great round of Spellbinder. Thank you so much for playing. With her great spelling, Estelle now has the lead with 120 points. Callum is on 110. Lexie is on 80 points and Reuben is on 30 points. Of course, it's just Reuben left to take on his specialist subject round. So, Reuben, what are you playing. - Equaliser. - Thank you for that, Reuben. Let us play Equaliser. Now forced into the elimination spot, but can he get back on top? It's Reuben. Please step forward. (TENSE MUSIC) All the best, Reuben. Here comes your first equation. That's the one. Your last equation. MUMBLES: Three hundred... (KLAXON BUZZES) - Sorry, out of time for that one, Reuben. 372 was the final answer to that. Thank you so much for playing Equaliser. You can take a step back to your podium. All of our players have now completed this specialist subject rounds. And where are they on the leaderboard? Let's find out. Estelle is in first place with 120 points. Callum has 110 points. Lexie is on 80 points and Reuben has 70 points. Which does mean, I'm sorry to say, Reuben, but your time on Brain Busters is up. It's been great having you on the show, but you have been eliminated. Get to go home with a $100 bank accounts though. So, what are you going to do with the money, Reuben? - Have a good day at the mall with my friends ` go watch a movie, that sort of thing. - Really cool choice, Reuben. Thank you so much for coming on the show. It's been great having you. As for our three remaining players, it's one step closer to the Brain Buster. - One eliminated, which means our three remaining players can not miss a beat with any of their questions. Ooh, I'm feeling nervous. Not for me. For them, of course. - Are you sure, man? I think these guys would give you a run for your money. But, hey, before we can get to the Brain Buster, we do have our Brain Teaser. Now, all of our players have gone through their specialist subject rounds. And now it is up to Lexie, Callum and Estelle to choose which one they would like to play. We have two remaining options and they are Sequencer or Reo Rangatira. So please cast your vote now for which one you would like to play. Everyone locking in their votes. Let's start with Lexie and take a look. She voted for Sequencer. Callum voted for... Reo Rangatira. And Estelle voted for... Sequencer. Thank you so much for all your votes. Let's play Sequencer. So now, Lexie, you are currently in that danger seat of being eliminated, so I need some questions answered from you if you want to get through. And of course, Callum and Estelle, the chance to boost up those points, because more points means more money. Good luck. Let's play. Her comes your first sequence ` sequence these inventions in chronological order ` earliest to most recent. Estelle. - Pocket watch, telescope, mechanical clock. - Estelle currently has the lead. Can she extend it further? Incorrect, I'm afraid, Estelle. In what order did these three artists first achieve fame? Lexie? - Madonna, Eminem, Taylor Swift? - Lexie wants to get in the points. And she does. In what order were these sports added to the Olympics? No one wanting to buzz for our final sequence round there for Brain Teaser. But that does end around as well. Thank you so much for those answers. Let's take a look at our leaderboard. Just like that, Lexie has jumped up to the lead and shares it with Callum on 110 points. Then we have Estelle on 90 points. So I'm sorry to say, Estelle, you have been eliminated from Brain Buster. Did a great job ` you were leading the way as well, but unfortunately just fell short at the end. Of course, you get to go home with $100 bank account. So what are you going to do with the money, Estelle? - I'll probably go shopping. - Nice. - With some friends. - What are you planning on buying? - Clothes. - Well` of course it's clothes. (CHUCKLES) Hey, it's been great to have you on the show, Estelle. Thank you very much. Well-played, as well, to Lexie and Callum. You are both through now to the Brain Buster. - This is where the greats are separated from the rest. How far are they willing to go and how deep are they willing to dig? Two players, one winner. Stay right there. We'll be right back after the break. Calculator! * - Calculator! - And, welcome back to Brain Busters. Our four players have gone through Mega Memory, they've tackled their specialist subject, and now it's on to the big one. It's the Brain Buster! ` Two players, one winner. I'm joined here with our two finalists, Lexie and Callum. Now, Lexie, it's the moment of truth. Are you ready to take on the Brain Buster? - Yeah, I'm really stoked and I'm ready to beat it. - Awesome. Love the attitude, man. And Callum, how's your confidence levels, bro? - 10 out of 10. - 10 out of 10. Easy. Well, all the best, team. Jump up on your zip-lines and let's get ready to fly. Here we go. Three, two, one, go. It's Lexie versus Callum; painting versus computer programming; art versus science in today's Brain Buster. Down the Neurotransmitters go both players. The Molecule Steps being walked all over. But this is just the beginning of the challenge. Lexie ` super quick into the Corpus Callosum, and Callum's not going to let her get a lead on him. At the Hippocampus now, both players entering in their codes... and unlocking the Parietal Lobe at exactly the same time. This is fierce competition here. Callum makes it up first as Lexie swings her way up and into the tunnel. Callum and Lexie both doing incredibly well so far. And now they tackle the Frontal Lobe and in no time are on to the DNA Molecule. It's been a fast race, but this can slow things down if they're not lucky. Finding the correct combination on the switches is easier said than done. Boom! Both sides activated. Lexie down the ladder first and both players enter the Basal Ganglia. It's going to be a photo finish here, Chris. - (LAUGHS) Oh, what race! What a race, indeed. Lexie just taking it out there in the end. I'll get you to come across this way, Lexie. Well, Callum, I'll start with you. Did you enjoy that? - Yeah. - A whole lot of fun? - 10 out of 10 at the top, is it still 10 out of 10? Good to hear. LAUGHING: Slightly out of breath, but you've done an amazing job, Callum, second place today on Brain Busters. We do have to eliminate you though. So, of course, getting to go home with a $100 bank account. What are you going to do with the money? - I think I might spend it on some components for my computer. - Nice choice. Great having you on the show, Callum. Lexie ` congratulations. It was close there on the on the codes there at the end. You both got the green light at the same time. But then you won that foot race. What was going through your head? - I was just really pumped and I just tried to get through it. - And you did, coming out on top. Congratulations. You're first place today for Brain Busters. How does it feel? - Thank you. Really happy. - Good to hear, Lexie. So, for Lexie, it is now on to The Amygdala. Welcome to Amygdala, Lexie. What an effort it's been from you to get here as well, especially that Brain Buster against Callum. 248 milliseconds is what was in it between you. So a really, really fast and impressive race. How does it feel to be here for you? - I'm very pumped to be here. - Good. All right. This is how it's going to work ` you are playing for a total of $220. So each correct Amygdala question you get right will be $22 added to that total. - Sound good. - Yup. - A lot of money. - Yeah. - Ready for it? - I think so. - Let's go. What is the name of the famous ex football player that Posh Spice has four children with? - I'm not sure. - Not too much of a football fan? (CHUCKLES) David Beckham was the answer. What is the name of the treaty that New Zealand also commemorates with a public holiday? - Waitangi Treaty? - Here we go. What is the last word in this line from Adele's Rolling in the Deep? 'You had my heart inside of your...' - Hands? - Was that one a guess? - Yeah, kinda. - You got it right, though. What does Nancy Drew do in the series of books named after her? - I don't know that one. - Investigating. Katherine Heigl starred in a film that had how many dresses in the title? - 21? - Seen the movie? - No. - So a bit of a guess then? - Yeah. - Could be right. 21 is not it, though. 27, so pretty close with the guess. What Olympic running event takes two standard laps to complete? - Marathon. - Marathon ` a big race. No, it's the 800 metres. And finally, what is the name of the table top game in which coloured disks are dropped to make a line? - Four-in-a-Row? All right, locked in Four-in-a-Row? How do you feel about that answer for the final Amygdala, Lexie? - I think I got it right. - You think you got it. OK, come on. This is the last one. Is it Four-in-a-Row? Yes, it is, of course, also known as Connect Four. And that does wrap up Amygdala. Let's take a look there ` $66, it's all yours, Lexie. Of course, not going home with that ` we're going to bump that up to $100 just for you, Lexie. So congratulations. What are you going to do with the money? - I've been thinking I'm saving up for a new phone, so I think that'll help me with it. - I think it will definitely help, Lexie. It's been a privilege and a pleasure having you on the show. Put it there. Thank you so much for coming. - Well done, Lexie. If you think you can take on the Brain Buster, jump online and head to Hei Hei Games. - We really appreciate you joining us today. Join us next time, for more Brain Busters.
