- Hip-hop to history, maths to memory. Kia ora, I'm Chris Kirk, and this is Brain Busters. We start with four, but in the end, there can be only one. - What's up, everybody? Your boy Mikey Falesiu chilling here on the ultimate obstacle course, where our final two will battle it out to see who will be crowned as today's Brain Buster. - Thanks for that, Mikey. And don't forget, you can play from home as well. So let's meet today's Brain Busters. (ENERGETIC ELECTRO MUSIC) Captions by Ellen Sinclair. Captions were made with the support of NZ On Air. www.able.co.nz Copyright Able 2020 Nau mai, haere mai, welcome to Brain Busters. Today, we have four players hoping they've got what it takes to be called the ultimate Brain Buster. First, they'll go through their specialist subject rounds, where they can pick from our six options. Then they'll hope to avoid elimination by scoring enough points to continue in the game. So let's meet today's players. First up, we have Ammalina. Welcome to the game, Ammalina. I hear you're right into your reading, what kind of stuff do your read? - I read, like, lots of Marvel fan fiction. - Oh, cool. So, what kind of stuff is involved there? - Um, I normally read, like, about Captain America and Loki and stuff. Yeah. - Fun. I like it. Hopefully some Marvel questions are going to pop up today, maybe. Who knows? Good luck to you, Ammalina. We also have Meg. Meg, right into your dancing. What do you love about dancing? - I like the music and the freedom. - If you had to pick a favourite dance style, what would it be? - Jazz. - Nice choice. Hugh, welcome to the game. Now, I hear you've got a bit of a Harry Potter story. - Yeah. When I was really small, I liked Harry Potter. - Yeah. - And so` - Don't we all? - Yeah. Drew a wee scar on my forehead. - OK. - Couldn't see it, cos my hair was really long back then, so I got the kitchen scissors and just went (CLICKS TONGUE). - (GROANS) What did Mum and Dad think of that? - They didn't notice for the first couple days, and then she was like, 'Your fringe is looking a bit weird.' - (LAUGHS) Fair enough. Well, it looks fine now, Hugh, looks great, by the way. Good luck to you in Brain Busters. And lastly we have Lachy. Lachy, what are you most excited for here on Brain Busters today? - I guess just the experience of being here. - Epic. All right, good luck to all of you. Thank you so much for being here. Let's get into our first round of the day. It's Mega Memory. 90 seconds on the clock, 10 points for each correct answer, but buzz in and if they get it wrong, they will lose 10 points. Good luck. Let's get into it. Your time starts now. Two-Face, Catwoman, and the Riddler are nemeses of which superhero? Lachy. - Batman. - (DING!) - What is the name of the donkey in Winnie the Pooh? Just in time there. That does wrap up Mega Memory. Thank you, everyone, for playing. Let's take a look at the leader board. Hugh has 70 points, Lachy is on 30 points, Ammalina is on 10 points, and so is Meg. So, we now move into our specialist subject rounds. And first to go today is Ammalina. What are you going to play? - Equaliser. - Thank you very much. Let's play Equaliser. She loves her superheroes, but is she a super maths star? Let's find out. Ammalina, please step forward. Right, Ammalina, here we go, 20 points for each correct equation. Good luck. Here comes your first one. - 15. - (DING!) - Correct, nice work. - 16. - (DING!) - Really strong start here. - 330. - (BUZZ!) - 276. - 468. - (DING!) - That is the one. - 322. - (DING!) - You got it. - -1? Um, 1. - (DING!) - Is correct. Doing great, Ammalina, here is your final equation. - 344. - (BUZZ!) 368. Close there as well, at the end, but Ammalina, a really, really strong start for Equaliser. With a strong start, Ammalina has 110 points. Hugh is on 70 points, Lachy is on 30 points, and Meg has 10 points, which means, Meg, it is now your turn. So, what are you playing? - Blueprinter. - Excellent choice, Meg. Let's play Blueprinter. Ready to dance her way into a whole lot of points, hopefully, it is Meg. Please step forward. Think you've got a strong memory, Meg? - Yes. - Good, well, we're going to put that to the test right now. Good luck. You're gonna have 30 seconds to have a look at what our blueprint is, and then 30 seconds to put in your answers. Best of luck. Let's take a look at what our Blueprinter is today. We're at Shibuya. Good luck. Your time starts now. The busiest railway station on Earth can be found in Shibuya, which is a ward in the Japanese city of Tokyo. Outside the station is a Shibuya scramble crossing. As many as 2500 people might be crossing at once. Ten seconds left, Meg. And that is time. All right, Meg says she's got a good memory, so let's put it to the test. You're now going to have 30 seconds to lock in those answers. Good luck. Your time for that starts now. (TENSE MUSIC) Halfway, Meg. Five seconds. Quickly, Meg, quickly! Time up there. Didn't quite manage to get them all in, but hopefully we've got the ones right that we have put in. So let's take a look now at our first one. Got the soccer field, that's the start we want. And we got the second one. Make that three! Didn't quite get that one. Tower Records ` oh, couldn't get that, though! But still, not a bad effort from what you put in there, Meg. Thank you so much for playing Blueprinter. Ammalina still holds the lead with 110 points. Meg joins Hugh on 70 points, and Lachy has 30 points. So, just like that, two of our players have already gone through their specialist subject rounds. But what is in the back of everybody's mind is, do they have enough points to get to the Brain Buster? - It's not gonna be easy for our final two, turning their points into dollars. This bad boy right here is a whole 'nother level. Chris, they've got to work extremely hard for it. Better let them know. - They're on to it. Mikey, thank you very much. And don't forget, you can play from home as well. Just get online to Heihei Games. Do not go anywhere. We'll see you right after the break. * - Welcome back to Brain Busters. Thank you so much for joining us. Now, just before the break, we had Ammalina and Meg take on their specialist subject rounds, both did fantastic jobs. And hoping they can do just as good a job, if not better, now, is Lachy. What have you chosen to play, Lachy? - Sequencer. Thanks for that, Lachy. Let's play Sequencer. He definitely wants to avoid elimination here. Lachy, please step forward. Little bit of pressure, Lachy, currently sitting in that elimination position, but I'm sure you're gonna do a great job. 20 points for each correct sequence. Here comes your first one. In which order did these famous people live? Feeling confident with that first one, Lachy? - Um, maybe. - Let's have a look. The start we want, nice work. In what order were these video streaming service founded, from first to last? Can we make it two in a row? In what order did these significant events happen in New Zealand? Putting your history to the test here, Lachy, let's take a look. Nicely done. Sequence these famous structures in the order of the date that they were built. Quick to lock in that one, Lachy. And that's why. In which order were these bear characters created? Had a thought about swapping that last one, should we have done it or is he right? Should've gone with the gut, needed to swap it. In which order with these sweet treats first released? Got a sweet tooth, Lachy? - Not really, actually. - Let's see if we've got our final sequence correct. Need to eat more chocolate, Lachy! Hey, that does wrap up our Sequencer. Lachy, how do you think you went? - Um, all right. - You did pretty good. Nice work. Thank you so much for playing Sequencer. - Thank you. Ammalina and Lachy share first place with 110 points. Meg is on 70, and Hugh is also on 70. But it is just Hugh left to go for our specialist subject round. So Hugh, what will it be? - Identifier. - Thank you very much, Hugh. Let's play Identifier. Our last specialist subject round of the day, it's Hugh! Please step forward. Hugh, welcome to the front. Strong effort in Mega Memory. How did you feel after getting all those questions right? - Pretty good. - Pretty good. Well, let's see if we can continue it now. Best of luck. Here we go. - Thank you. - Speedy to lock in our first one. And it's correct. Nice start, Hugh. Wee shake of the head, not feeling too confident. ` Nah, nah. - Let's take a look. Yep, yep, and not quite. Temperatures increase while moving from winter to spring. See if we can get back on track, Hugh. Decisions, decisions. Have we got our height order correct? Knew he should've swapped it. - Yeah. - Sure you don't want to change your answer to a car? Let's take a look. Nice work. How we feeling about this one, Hugh? - Hm, think I got two of them right, not sure about the last one. - Need three for the points, though. - Yeah. That's one, that's the two... Make it three! Nice. Locked in. Three out of three there, that is correct. So another 20 points, Hugh. That is Identifier wrapped up. How do you feel about that one? - Pretty good. - You've done fantastic. Thank you so much. You can take yourself back to your podium. All of our players have now taken on the challenge of their specialist subject rounds, but where do they all end up on the leader board? Let's find out now. Hugh reclaims top spot with 170 points. Ammalina and Lachy share second place with 110 points. Then we have Meg on 70 points. So, unfortunately it comes to the time in the show where we have to eliminate our first player, Meg, today, that is you. But you get to go home with a $100 bank account. So, what are you going to do with the money? - I'm going to spend it on books. - Nice choice. Thank you so much for playing, Meg, and congratulations to our three remaining players who are one step closer to that Brain Buster. - The heat just got turned up for our three remaining players, because the top two will be joining me very soon to take on this beast. - Thanks for that, Mikey. Before we can get to the Brain Buster though, of course, we have our Brain Teaser. Now, all of our players have gone through their specialist subject rounds and we are left with two options for our players to choose from. Today, those options are Reo Rangatira or Spellbinder. So, Ammalina, Hugh and Lachy, please cast your votes now. Everyone's votes are locked in, let's start with Ammalina, who has chosen Spellbinder, Hugh has voted for Reo Rangatira, and Lachy has voted for Reo Rangatira as well. Thank you very much for voting, everyone. Let's play Reo Rangatira. All three of our players want to get through to that Brain Buster, but only two can play. Who will it be? Let's find out now. Best of luck. Here is your first Brain Teaser Reo Rangatira question. What is banana in Maori? Hugh. - Panana. - (DING!) - It's correct. Extending that lead, nice work, Hugh. What is a Maori word for daughter? Lachy. - Hine. - (BUZZ!) - Tamahine was the answer there, Lachy. So close! During World War II, a kapa haka was formed by Tuini Ngawai. What was the kapa called? - (BUZZ!) - Out of time for that one, the correct answer was Te Hokowhitu-a-Tumatauenga. Your final Brain Teaser, here we go. What is a Maori word for sea or ocean? Hugh. - Moana. - (DING!) - Speedy on that buzzer, and he is correct. Congratulations, Hugh, for getting that last one right. And just like that, that is the Brain Teaser wrapped up. So let's take a look at the leader board. Hugh has extended his lead out to 230 points. Ammalina has 110 points. Lachy is on 80 points, which does mean, Lachy, I'm sorry to say, you've been eliminated from Brain Busters. Get to go home with a $100 bank account, though, so that's pretty good. What are you gonna do with the money? - I'm going to put it towards money for a cow. - A cow? - Yeah. - Oh, that's awesome! How long have you wanted a cow for? - Probably since the start of the year. - That is cool. Best of luck with your cow, Lachy. Thank you so much for playing. As for our two remaining players, it's now on to the Brain Buster. - Our final two will be taking on the Brain Buster. But will they be able to perform under the pressure? I guess we'll find out soon. Don't go anywhere, we'll be right back. I guess we'll find out soon. Don't go anywhere, we'll be right back. * - Welcome back to Brain Busters. We now have our two finalists locked in and ready to take on the Brain Buster! - I'm up here with our two finalists, Ammalina and Hugh. Well done, guys, for making it this far. Now, Ammalina, I know you're a bit nervous, but are you ready to take on the Brain Buster? - Yes. - How you feeling? - Uh, nervous. - I know you got this. Everything will be OK. And Hugh, water polo's your thing, man? - Yeah. - You think those skills will help you win today? - Definitely. - Oh, well, all the best to you both. Let's jump up on to our zip lines and let's do this thing. Here we go. Three, two, one. Go! - Flying across the Brain Stem zip line, Hugh and Ammalina make it into the Brain Buster. Remember, the winner will get to combine both player's total points. And it's been a high scoring game today, so let's see who can turn those points into dollars. No one with a clear advantage just yet, both players getting their codes and heading into the Corpus Callosum. Both engaging the Hippocampus now. Who will be first to unlock the Parietal Lobe? It's Ammalina, but only by a whisker. They both head up the climbing wall. And yes, it looks like Ammalina has a bit of a lead now. Has reading all of that Marvel material given her superpowers? Hugh might have to use some Hogwarts magic if he wants to compete with that. We're getting to the business end now. This is the Frontal Lobe. Ammalina doing well, pushing through those nerves. Will she be able to find the correct combination on the DNA Molecule switches? Boom. Hugh get's his first, oh, and Ammalina's has now activated too. Its going to be a sprint across the Basal Ganglia to the finish. Hugh, just ahead, and... ...yes! Hugh with the win. Great mahi from these two, Chris. - And hit the buzzer! There we go. Ammalina, bring it across this way as well. What a close race that ended up being. Ammalina, we'll start with you. Enjoyed it? - Yes. - A whole lot of fun. Hey, congratulations. Second place today on a Brain Busters, get to go home with a $100 bank account. So, what are you going to do with the money? - Probably just buy food. - Nice. Favourite food? - Um, just chocolate. - Nice choice, me too. Thank you so much for coming on the show, Ammalina. Hugh, congratulations. You've won the Brain Buster, did you think you were gonna be able to take it out? - Uh, yeah. - Oh, you have the confidence. - Yeah. - It's good to have confidence, right. So, congratulations, today's winner. So, for Hugh, it is now time to take on Amygdala. Hugh, here we are at the Amygdala. Although you had the confidence you were going to get here all the way through, but how does it feel to actually be here? - Pretty good. - Pretty good. All right. Let's take a look and see how much you're playing for. So, you had a really impressive show. 230 points you got. Plus, Ammalina scored 110 points, so we combine that ` $340. So, $34 for each correctly answered question. Are you ready to go? - Yep. - All right. Here is your first Amygdala question. What kind of fruit is a Granny Smith? - Apple. - (DING!) - Correct, nice start. Wimbledon is arguably tennis's most famous event, which city is it held in? - London? - (DING!) - Nice work. Which New Zealand city is the first in the world to see the sunrise each day? - Oh, Invercargill? - (BUZZ!) - Gisborne... - Gisborne. - ...it is, up in the North Island. Which singer-songwriter with the surname Gomez started out on Barney and Friends? - Selena Gomez. - (DING!) - That's correct. Which book, movie and television series follows the Baudelaire orphans escaping Count Olaf? - A Series of Unfortunate Events, by Lemony Snicket. - That's a mouthful of an answer. - (LAUGHS) Yeah. - Pretty confident with that one, then? - Yeah. - (DING!) - Of course it's correct! Which country is the musician Dave Dobbyn from? - England? - England. Heard of Dave Dobbyn? - Uh, yeah, I've heard of him. I think he's from England. - (BUZZ!) - New Zealand! - Oh, really? - Local, yep, absolutely. Which search engine brand is a misspelling of the mathematical term` - Google. - You sure you don't want me to finish the question? - (LAUGHS) Nah, I'm good. - Locking in Google. - Google. - Which search engine brand is a misspelling of the mathematical term for the number one, followed by 100 zeros? You said Google. Jumped the gun as well. - (LAUGHS) - (DING!) - And rightly so. Nice work. Here is your last Amygdala question. How many minutes are there in three hours? - 180. - 180. Think you've done the right maths there? - Well, I wasn't in Equaliser, so maybe not. - Maybe a good thing too. - (DING!) - 180 is correct. So, let's take a look and see ` $238. Hugh, it is all yours, my friend. Congratulations. - Thank you. - What are you going to do with the money? - Um, dunno, invest in shares? - Invest in shares? All the best. You need to give me some financial tips a bit later on, then. - Yeah. - Hugh, thank you so much for coming on the show. - Thank you. - Awesome job, Hugh.
