- We start with four, but in the end, there can be only one. Kia ora. I'm Chris Kirk, and this is Brain Busters. Who has the mind power to get through all of our rounds, and end up at this, the Brain Buster? - Your man, Mikey Falesiu, ready with today's action. Will our top two finalists be prepared to take on the Brain Buster? I guess we'll find out soon. - Yes, we will, Mikey. Thank you for that, and don't forget, you can play from home as well. So let's meet today's Brain Busters. (EXCITING MUSIC) Captions by Annie Curtis. Captions were made with the support of NZ On Air. www.able.co.nz Copyright Able 2020 Nau mai, haere mai, and welcome to Brain Busters. Today, we have four players hoping they've got what it takes to be called the ultimate Brain Buster. Now, as always, we'll start with our specialist rounds, where players can choose from our six options. They'll hopefully get enough points to avoid elimination and stay in this game, so let's meet our players now. First up, Euan, welcome to the show. Now, I hear you have an axolotl. - Yeah, I do. - Why do you have an axolotl? I love saying the word 'Mexican walking fish', because it's one of its other names, and it's just really cool to see their reaction when I say 'walking fish'. - (LAUGHS) Uh, and does Mexican walking fish have a name? - Yes, he's Axel the Axolotl. - Makes a whole lot of sense. Thanks for coming on the show, Euan. Next up, we have Freya. Freya, welcome. Now, you've been a part of the Strum, Strike, and Blow concert. What's that? - It's a musical concert around Christchurch with over 1000 kids performing in it. - So what do you play? - I did it for seven years, and I played the marimba and the ukulele. - Wow. Some awesome instruments there. Thank you so much for coming on the show, Freya. We also have Hana, all the way from Invercargill today. What's the best thing about Invercargill, Hana? - Um, the weather? Um, I'd also say the community. It's a great place. - I think you're being sarcastic maybe about one of those things,... - Yep. (LAUGHS) - ...and I think it's probably the weather. - Yep. (CHUCKLES) - (CHUCKLES) Great to have you on the show, Hana. And last but not least, we've got Sam. Right into your video games, Sam? - Yes, very much. - Favourite one at the moment? - It would have to be Warframe. - Oh, nice choice. Well, hey, thank you so much to all of you for coming today. Let's get straight into our first round. It's Mega Memory. 90 seconds on the clock for our players today. Let's get some points building. Your time starts now. In video games, what does 'VR' stand for? Hana? - Virtual reality. (DING!) - Who performs the haka Kapa o Pango? Hana? - All Blacks. (DING!) - Which film series features a theme park full of dinosaurs? Euan? - Jurassic Park. (DING!) - Who was the person who gave the 'I Have a Dream' speech? Euan? - Martin Luther King? (DING!) - What is the name of children's TV's big red dog? Sam? - Clifford. (DING!) - How many are there in a baker's dozen? Freya? - 13. (DING!) - In Star Wars, what is the first name of Princess Leia's twin brother? Sam? - Luke. (DING!) - On what board game can you achieve a triple word score? Sam? - Scrabble. (DING!) (SIREN SOUNDS) - And that is time up, just like that. Goes by fast, doesn't it, but thank you so much for playing our first round. Let's take a look at the leaderboard. Sam is on 30 points, Euan has 20 points, Hana is on 20 points, and Freya is 10 points. So now we move into our specialist subject rounds, and first to take to the floor, it is Freya. So what have you chosen to play, Freya? - Equaliser. - Thank you very much for that, Freya. Let's play Equaliser. Swapping out the music for maths. Freya, please step forward. (TENSE MUSIC) Best of luck. First to go. - Thank you. - 20 points for each correct equation. Can't lose any points in this round either, OK? Let's do it. - 648? (BUZZER SOUNDS) - 228. - 0.5 (DING!) - Correct. There we go. Nice work, Freya. - 56? (DING!) - On a roll now. - 660. (DING!) - You got it. - 902? (DING!) - Is correct. - 84? (BUZZER SOUNDS) - 97. Couldn't quite get the last one there. Had a really great run in the middle, though, Freya, so great job. Thank you for playing Equaliser. - Thank you. - Freya has 90 points, Sam is on 30 points, Euan has 20 points, and Hana has 20 points. So, next to tackle their specialist subject, it is Euan. What have we chosen to play today, Euan? - Blueprinter. - Great choice. Let's play Blueprinter. Hoping to make Axel the Axolotl proud, Euan, please step forward. (TENSE MUSIC) Now, do axolotls have good memories? Goldfish, obviously, not known for their great memories, but what about axolotls? - I'm not sure, but I think if he tried, he probably would have very good memory. - All right. Well, we want to see if you have got a good memory today as well, Euan. So Blueprinter ` 30 seconds to have a look at what our Blueprinter is, then 30 seconds to put in those answers. Best of luck, and let's take a look at today's Blueprinter. Your time starts now. The summer palace is said to be the best preserved imperial garden in the world. The natural rolling hills and water, combined with pavilions, pagodas and palaces make for a truly spectacular sight to see. 10 seconds left, Euan. (SIREN SOUNDS) Time's up for Blueprinter. You'll now have 30 seconds to put in your answers. Best of luck. That time starts now. (DRAMATIC MUSIC) 10 seconds to put in that last one. And we're done. How do we think we went, Euan? - All right. Yeah. - OK, let's take a look. First up. (DING!) We got the National Flower Beds. That's the start we want. (DING!) And the Sea of Wisdom Temple. (DING!) Got our third one there. (DING!) Bronze Pavilion, looking good. (DING!) Make that five. (BUZZER SOUNDS) (SIGHS) Couldn't quite get the sixth one. What about number seven? (BUZZER SOUNDS) Unfortunately not. Still a great effort in Blueprinter. Five correct, so great job, Euan. Euan has 120 points, Freya is on 90 points, Sam is on 30 points, and Hana is on 20 points. So we are two down and two to go for our specialist subject rounds, and all of our players are still wondering if they're going to be able to get to the Brain Buster. - We're getting closer to that time where our final two will take on the ultimate obstacle course. Things are about to get real. I hope they're ready, Chris. - Oh, they're definitely ready, Mikey, and don't forget, you can play from home as well. Just get online to HEIHEI Games. Don't go anywhere. We'll be right back for more Brain Busters. * (EXCITING MUSIC) Welcome back to Brain Busters, and thank you so much for joining us. Now, just before the break, we had Freya and Euan tackle their specialist subject rounds, and next to have a turn, it is Hana. So what are we playing, Hana? - Reo Rangatira. - Thank you very much, Hana. Let's play Reo Rangatira. Can Hana avoid elimination? Let's find out right now. Please step forward. (TENSE MUSIC) So, Hana, do you think you can avoid elimination? - Yes. - Good, that's the right attitude. Let's get straight into it. 20 points for each Te Reo focused question. Tokowaru is eight people. What is nine people? - Iwa. Tokoiwa. (DING!) - There we go. Nice work. What is the name for an ancestral meetinghouse? - Marae. (DING!) - Correct. What does the word 'ha' mean in English? - Breathe. (DING!) - Kia ora. Waiti, Waita and Waipuna-a-rangi are a part of which constellation? - Matariki. (DING!) What is a Maori word for hurricane? - Awhiowhio. (DING!) - Correct. Nicely done. - Awa. - Really, really good job. Kohi-tatea, Hui-tanguru and Poutu-te-rangi are all what? - Months. (DING!) That is correct. What a speedy round or Reo Rangatira. Hana, how do you feel about your performance there? - Great. - You did incredible. Thank you so much for playing. You can take a step back to your podium. With seven out of seven, Hana now jumps to first place with 160 points, Euan has 120 points, Freya has 90 points, and Sam has 30 points. So, Sam, it's just you left to tackle your specialist subject round, and what have you chosen to play? - Identifier. - Thank you very much, Sam. Let's play Identifier. Last but certainly not least, Sam. Please step forward. (TENSE MUSIC) How does the pressure feel going last, Sam? - Not great. - (CHUCKLES) Not great. Hey, don't worry about it. Put it to the side. Focus on the Identifier questions, and you'll be great. 20 points for each one, and let's try to get you as many as we can. Here is your first one. First point. Can we get them? Great job, Sam. Human, guinea pig, grizzly bear ` arrange these creatures by average lifespan from shortest to longest. (DING!) Two in a row. Nice work, Sam. (DING!) And again, nice work, Sam. (TENSE MUSIC) Had a think at the start, then decided to completely change his answer. Was that the right move to make, Sam? (DING!) Indeed, it was. Nicely done. Grow roots, develop flowers, germination ` order these stages of the life cycle of a flowering plant. Great round so far. Can we get some more points for Sam? (DING!) Absolutely. Sodium, helium, hydrogen ` arrange these elements in order of atomic number from lowest to highest. Can we get some more points again? (DING!) Yes. Your final Identifier, Sam. Again, had to think about one of those options, but swapped it to another. Was that the right move to make? Should we have kept it the same, or was it something different? (DING!) (BUZZER SOUNDS) (SUCKS TEETH) Unfortunately couldn't get that last one there, but Sam, a brilliant effort in Identifier. Just one incorrect answer away from getting that perfect score. Great job. Thank you so much for playing Identifier. Hana still has the lead just with 160 points, Sam has 150 points, Euan his 120 points, and Freya has 90 points. So, Freya, I'm sorry to tell you, but you have been eliminated from Brain Busters. Thank you so much for coming on the show. A $100 bank account is all yours, Freya, so what are you going to do with that money? - Probably take my family out for dinner. - Ooh, any plans on where to go? - Not sure yet. - Somewhere nice, I bet. Thank you so much for coming on the show once again, Freya, and congratulations to our three remaining players. It's one step closer to hanging out with Mikey on the Brain Buster. - The pressure is now on. Three remaining players, two finalists, but only one winner will get the chance to make it to the Amygdala. - Kia ora for that, Mikey, but first, we do have our brainteaser. Now, all of our players have gone through this specialist subject rounds, and we are left with two for our remaining players to pick from, and today's options are... Spellbinder or Sequencer. So Euan, Hana and Sam, please choose which one you would like to play now. Thank you, everyone, for voting. Let's firstly take a look at Euan, who has voted for sequencer. Let's jump across to Sam, and see what he has voted for. Spellbinder. So it comes down to Hannah, who has chosen.... Sequencer. Thank you, everyone, for your votes. Let's play Sequencer. All three of our players want to get to that Brain Buster, but only two can. Who will it be? Let's find out now. Best of luck. Here comes your first brainteaser. In what order did these New Zealand figures achieve these milestones? Hana. - Sir Ernest Rutherford first, and then Edmund Hillary in the middle, and Taika Waititi last. - Hana currently has the leads, but this outcome could change it if she gets it wrong. (DING!) Doesn't matter, though, because she's got it right, extending her lead. Nice work, Hana. Run, bike, swim ` in what order do you complete these events in an Olympic triathlon, from first` Euan. - Swim, bike, run. - Euan currently sitting in that elimination position needs these points. (DING!) And gets it. Nicely done, Euan. In which order were these footwear first worn? Sam. - Winklepickers, clogs, slippers. - Sam wants to get in to some points as well. But needed to swap around winklepickers and slippers. Put these days of the week in alphabetical order. - Sam. - Friday, Saturday, Tuesday. - Sam needs this one to be correct if he's got any hope of getting through to the Brain Buster. (DING!) And he does it. Nice work, Sam. Just like that, it is our brainteaser completed. Thank you all for playing. Let's take a look at the leaderboard. Hana has 190 points, Euan has 150 points, and Sam has 150 points as well. So that does mean we go to a tiebreaker between Euan and Sam. So what's going to happen ` I will ask a question. The first person to buzz in and get the question right between Euan and Sam will go through, however, if you buzz in and get that question wrong, your opponent will go through. Best of luck to the both of you. Here comes your question now. In the traditional version of the song Twelve Days of Christmas, what new gift did 'my true love' give on the fifth day? Euan. - Five golden rings. (DING!) - Is correct. Nicely done there, Euan. Congratulations. You are through to the next round. Sam, sorry to say you've been eliminated from Brain Busters. A great round there in the brainteaser just before to get to this position. You've done awesome, and you get to go home with a $100 bank account. So what are you going to do with that money? - It's going to go towards my trip to England. - Awesome. Best of luck over there, and congratulations once again to Euan and Hana, who now head to the Brain Buster. - It's almost crunch time for our two finalists. They will go head to hit on the Brain Buster, but there can only be one winner. We'll find out who very soon. We'll find out who very soon. * - Welcome back to Brain Busters. Our players today have gone through Mega Memory, their specialist subject rounds, the brain teaser, and now it comes down to this, the Brain Buster. - I'm up here with our final two, Euan and Hana. Now, Euan, drumming is your thing, bro? - Yeah. - You ready to beat your way to victory? - Yes, definitely. - Nice man. All the best. And Hana, I know it's probably not the right thing to talk about right now, but you enjoy sleeping? - very much. (CHUCKLES) - You're awake and ready to take on the Brain Buster? - Yep. All right, I hope so. All the best to you both. It's now time to jump up on our zip lines, and let's get ready to fly. Cool. Here we go. Three, two, one, go! Hana, the Invercargill community is cheering you on from home, and Euan, I know Axel the Axolotl believes in you, but only one will make it through. Who is it going to be? Hana off to a good start. She's definitely not sleeping on this race. You better catch, Euan. Both players headed to the corpus callosum, and Hana is already out and punching in her code. Did she memorise it? Yes! And how about Euan? Awesome stuff. Can Euan close that gap, as both are now climbing the parietal lobe? Hana's nearly there, and yes! Still in the lead, at least for now. And she's staying low through the web tunnel. I think that's a good move. Euan follows suit as well with the same technique. It looks like we might have a close one on our hands here, people. Hana and Euan are scrambling across the frontal lobe now. Both want to be first to make it through the DNA molecule switches. And they both make it. It's anyone's game. Hana has managed to activate the lights pretty quickly. And there's Euan's as well. This is going to be a close one all the way to the end. The basal ganglia's the final obstacle for these two. Under, over, under. Who's it going to be, Chris? - Oh, my gosh! What a close race that was. Hana just getting there in the end. - (EXCLAIMS) - Far out. That was very, very close. We'll start with you, Euan. How does that feel to have completed the Brain Buster? - It was real hard, but real fun. - And a great race as well, so close. I think we had a couple of changes in the lead there as well. I think Hana had it to start with, then you came back, then Hana came back. It was impressive to watch, and thank you so much for coming on the show, Euan. A $100 bank account, it is all yours, so what are you going to do with that money? - I'm going to spend it on some vinyl. - Cool choice. - What kind of music are you into? - Uh, like, 80s kind of music. - Nice work. All the best, Euan. Thank you so much, once again, for coming off the show. Hana, what a race. How was that for you? - Great. - Did you think you're going to get there in the end? - Honestly, no. (CHUCKLES) - But here you are, and what a race it was as well. Thank you so much for coming on, Hana. Journey not over just yet, though. One more obstacle to take on, and that, of course, is Amygdala. Hana, welcome to the Amygdala. - Thank you. - Great to have you here, and what a journey you've had as well. A perfect score in Reo Rangatira, and then a really, really close battle on the Brain Buster. Just 264 milliseconds between you and Euan. A really, really good performance today. You should be super proud of yourself, but just one more thing left to do, and that is to hopefully win you a whole lot of money. Shall we do that? - Yep. - $350 is what you are playing for. $35 per question answered. Let's get straight into it. 'Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee' is a quote by which famous boxer? - Hm... Pass. - Do you know any boxer names? Worth the guess. - No. (CHUCKLES) (BUZZER SOUNDS) - Muhammad Ali. - I was gonna say that! - Always worth the guess, like I said. What type of product is a Wonderboom? - Speaker. (DING!) - There we go. Money on the board. Which Star Wars episode was released first? Episode Three or Episode Four? - Episode four. - Episode four? That wouldn't make a lot of sense going in order. (DING!) It is Episode Four. Name the largest city in New Zealand's South Island. - Invercargill. - Largest city. Obviously from Invercargill. - (CHUCKLES) I don't think that's right. - But is it the largest city? (BUZZER SOUNDS) Christchurch, the correct answer. - Oh my gosh. Miles Morales and Peter Parker are two incarnations of which superhero? - Spiderman. - Way more confident with that answer. It would be great to get some more money here. (DING!) Spiderman is correct. Which series of books are based in a country called Panem? - Harry Potter? - Harry Potter locked in. - SOFTLY: (CHUCKLES) That's wrong. (BUZZER SOUNDS) - Not Harry Potter. Worth the guess, though. The correct answer was The Hunger Games. - Aw. Final Amygdala question. In which country is the Sydney Opera House located? - Australia. - Last Amygdala question. Australia locked in. (DING!) And it is correct. There we go, Hana. $140. Congratulations, and thank you so much for playing today. What are you going to do with that money? - Um, probably buy clothes or something. - Easy choice. - (LAUGHS) - Thanks heaps for coming on the show, Hana. It's been great having you. - Way to finish, Hana. Oi, always worth the guess, right? - (LAUGHTER) - If you think you could take on the Brain Buster, just like our girl Hana, jump online, and head to HEIHEI Games. - Thank you so much for joining us today. Until next time, that's us for Brain Busters. www.able.co.nz Copyright Able 2020 Thank you, NZ on Air.
