(UPBEAT MUSIC) Captions were made with the support of NZ On Air. www.able.co.nz Copyright Able 2020 Nau mai, haere mai. Welcome to Brain Busters. Today, we have four players hoping they've got what it takes to be called the ultimate Brain Buster. Now, we'll start with our specialist subject rounds where our players will choose from our six options. Hopefully they'll get enough points to avoid elimination and stay in the game. So let's meet today's players. Firstly, we have Robert. Algebra ` it's your thing. What do you love about algebra? - Oh, I just love everything. I love maths itself because I need something to do. Well, if I don't have homework that's up to date. I usually do, though. I just do it in my spare time. It's fun. - Awesome. Keep the brain ticking over. Best of luck to you, Robert. You also have Jacob. Jacob, why are you excited about being here on Brain Busters? - To be honest, I'm a bit nervous and a bit excited at the same time, and I just really want to crack into it. - Nice, Jake. I'm sure we can do that. Channel those nerves. We also have Skylah all the way from Kaitaia. How does it feel to be here on Brain Busters? - Um, yeah, it's a bit nerve wracking, but also exciting at the same time. It's my first time in the South Island. - I'm sure we can make it a memorable one as well, Skylah. And last but not least, another traveller, we have Hannah from Queenstown. Must be into your skiing, right, Hannah? - Yes, I am. - Any fun stories? - Well, one time my friend dropped a ski from the chairlift. - (GASPS) - But luckily there was a ski patrol behind us who rescued it for us. - Bit of a walk down to get it, I bet. - Yeah. - (CHUCKLES) Fair enough. All right. Well, hey, thank you all for coming on to the show. Let's not waste any time and get straight into it with Mega Memory. Let's get straight into it. 90 seconds on the clock. Best of luck. Your time starts now. In a pack of cards, which usually ranks higher ` a queen or a king? Jacob. - A king. - What type of organism are mushrooms? Robert. - Fungi. - Which North American country has the world's longest coastline? Jacob. - Chile. - Canada. In the Super Mario series, what is the name of Mario's brother? Robert. - Luigi. - How long is a game of football? Jacob. - 90 minutes. - What is the name of the princess in the Disney movie Beauty and the Beast? Robert. - Beams of light. - Can you give me more information, please? - Beams of light from spotlights. - What is the outside colour of the confectionery called Jaffas? Robert. - Red. - What type of clothing is the London Fog brand best known for? Robert. - Pyjamas. - Incorrect, sorry. The correct answer there was raincoats. That does end Mega Memory. Thank you all for playing. Let's take a look now at the leaderboard. Robert has the early lead with 50 points. Jacob is on 20 points. Skylah is on 10 points. And Hannah is on zero points. So, Hannah, I don't know about you, but I think we should bump that score up a bit. What do you reckon? - Yeah. - Perfect. So what are you playing? - Equaliser. - Thanks very much, Hannah. Let's play Equaliser. Swapping the ski poles for maths equations. Hannah, please step forward. (TENSE MUSIC) And I'm sure maths is on your mind when you're going down the slopes super fast, right (?) - Um... - (LAUGHS) - Sometimes. - Oh, really? Well, then, hopefully this helps. 20 points for each correct equation. Best of luck, Hannah. READS QUESTION: - Nice start. READS QUESTION: - Really good stuff. READS QUESTION: READS QUESTION: READS QUESTION: 32, Hannah. Very close. Still doing great. OK. Last equation, Hannah. READS QUESTION: Quick answer to end the round, and it is correct. Hannah, started off great. Went a little bit awry there in at the middle, then came back really strong. So great job. Thank you so much for playing Equaliser. Hannah has 80 points. Robert is on 50. Jacob is on 20 points. And Skylah has 10 points. So next to come to the front, it is Skylah. What will you be playing? - I'll be playing Reo Rangatira. - Thank you very much, Skylah. Let's play Reo Rangatira. Time to put her te reo to the test. Skylah, please step forward. (TENSE MUSIC) 20 points, Skylah, for each te-reo-focused question. How are we feeling? - Yeah, feeling pretty good about it. - Sweet as. Best of luck to you. Here comes your first one. What is a Maori word for table? - Tepu. - Great work. If tuatahi is first, what is second? - Tuarua. - What is a Maori word for the walking stick that is sometimes carved or a crutch? - Tokotoko. - Perfect start so far. Ringatu, Pai Marere and Ratana are all what? - Religions. - That's correct. What is a Maori word for soap? - Hopi. - You got it. Doing great,. Whakamaori nga nama 47 ki 50. - Wha tekau ma whitu, wha tekau ma waru, wha tekau ma iwa, rima tekau. - Ae. - (CHUCKLES) - Last one. What is a Maori word for woman? - Wahine. - Kia ora. That is a perfect round for Reo Rangatira. You said you were feeling pretty good about it. How do you feel now? - Great. (LAUGHS) - Good to hear, Skylah. Congratulations. Amazing effort. Thank you so much for playing Reo Rangatira. With that perfect score, Skylah has the lead with 150 points. Hannah is on 80 points. Robert is on 50 points. And Jacob is on 20 points. So a very interesting start here on Brain Busters today. And of course, everyone is thinking if they can get to the Brain Buster. - It's almost that time where your words just won't cut it. Your actions are what matters when it comes to the Ultimate Obstacle Course. Attitude will determine your altitude. Let's get it. - Kia ora, Mikey. And don't forget, of course, you can play from home as well. Simply head online to HeiHei Games. Do not go anywhere. We'll be right back for more Brain Busters. * Nau mai hoki mai. Welcome back to Brain Busters. Now, just before the break, we had Hannah and Skylah tackle their specialist subject rounds. And next to come to the floor, it is Jacob. So, what are we playing, Jacob? - Blueprinter. - Thank you very much. Let's play Blueprinter. Jacobs words were, 'Let's crack into it.' So let's do just that. Please step forward, Jacob. (TENSE MUSIC) How are those nerves feeling now, Jacob? - They're feeling better. - Good. All right, that's what I like to hear. 30 seconds to have a look at where our Blueprinter is today. And then you'll have 30 seconds to put in your answers. Best of luck and let's see where it is. Dubai. Your time starts now. Dubai is the most populous city of the United Arab Emirates with over 3 million residents, and it is the location of the tallest building on Earth. The Burj Khalifa is a whopping 828m tall and also happens to be the world's only seven-star hotel. Now, that is luxury. 10 seconds, Jacob. (COUNTDOWN CLOCK BEEPS) (ALARM BLARES) Time up, Jacob. You'll now have 30 seconds to put in all your answers. That time starts now. - OK. Um... That goes there. Um... (MUMBLES) - Halfway, Jacob. (COUNTDOWN CLOCK BEEPS) Five seconds left. All right, Jacob, that is time up. How do we think we've gone? - Um, not sure. - Not sure. Well, fingers crossed. Let's have a look. That's the first lot of green with Dubai Creek. And Flamingo Lagoon. Got Union House. Doing great, Jacob. But missed that one, unfortunately. And the Dubai Fountain. Oh, couldn't quite get Burj Khalifa. And missed out on Kite Beach. So, started really strong and then just missed a couple towards the end, there, Jacob. But still a great effort. Thank you so much for playing Blueprinter. Skylah has the lead still with 150 points. Jacob joins Hannah on 80 points, and Robert is on 50 points. So we just have one player left to take on their specialist subject round, and that is Robert. So what are we playing? - Uh, I'm doing Identifier. - Thank you very much, Robert. Let's play Identifier. He loves identifying those algebra problems, but can he identify our Brain Buster answers? Robert, please step forward. (TENSE MUSIC) Had a great round of Mega Memory, so no pressure, but we've gotta back it up if we want to stay in this game. Ready to go, Robert? - (EXHALES) Yeah. - Good luck. (CHRIS READS QUESTION) That's the start we want, Robert. An egg; soy sauce; orange juice. (CHRIS READS QUESTION) Robert thinking about this one. You've got it, Robert. Identify the three types of naturally occurring rock. Very quick to lock in that one. Confident with that, Robert? - Yeah. - You got it right. Nice work. Which three are venomous Australian creatures? Let's have a look, Robert. Great job. (CHRIS READS QUESTION) Again, super speedy locking our answer. Is it the right one? Indeed. Identify the names of Uranus' moons. - (EXHALES) (MUTTERS) I think it's that. - Robert, you said you think it's that. - I'm not familiar with Uranus' moons. - Let's take a look. - Ariel and that. Yeah. - Yeah, needed to swap it out. Knew what it was in the end there. Final Identifier ` eliminate the three things that are not a type of energy. - (MUTTERS) Oh... It's either that or mechanical. - Locked it in. Thought you should have swapped it? - I don't know. - Let's see. Yeah, there you go. Nice work, Robert. A really nice finish as well to the round. Thank you so much for tackling Identifier. Robert reclaims his lead with 170 points. Skylah is on 150 points, And then we have a tie with Jacob and Hannah, both on 80 points. So we go to our sudden death tie-breaker round now. It'll just be Jacob and Hannah taking on this challenge. So, whoever buzzes in and gives me the correct answer first will go through to the next round. But if you buzz in and give me the incorrect answer, your opponent will go through. Best of luck to you both. Here we go. Mg is the chemical symbol for what element? Hannah. - Magnesium. - Is correct. Had to be fast, and you were, Hannah. Congratulations. You are through to the next round. So, Jacob, sorry to say you have been eliminated from Brain Busters. So, so close to getting through as well, though. But you get to go home with a $100 bank account. So what are you going to do with that money, Jacob? - Um, I might go to spend it on frozen yoghurt. - A hundred dollars on frozen yoghurt? - Well, some of it. And then save the rest. - Nice choice. I was going to say that's a whole lot of yoghurt. Jacob, thanks for coming on the show. It's been great having you. So, congratulations to our three remaining players. It's one step closer to that Brain Buster. - One down, one left to go home until our final two will find out what the Brain Buster is all about. - Thanks for that, Mikey. And as always, before you can go to the Brain Buster, we have our Brain Teaser. Now, all of our players have gone through their specialist subject rounds, and we are left with two for our players to pick from. Today they are Spellbinder or... Sequencer. So, Robert, Skylah and Hannah, the choice is completely up to you. Please vote for which one you would like to play now. Thank you very much for picking your votes. Let's take a look at Robert first... who was chosen Spellbinder. Skylah has picked... Spellbinder as well. And Hannah has chosen... Spellbinder. Three for three. So let's play Spellbinder. Now, Hannah, you managed to just narrowly avoid elimination. Gonna have to do it again. Some really big points need to be had if you want to stay in this game. Good luck to all three of our players. Of course, 30 points on offer if you buzz in and get it right. But buzz in and spell the word wrong, you lose 30 points. Here comes that first word. Directions. Hannah. - SPELLS: - That's the start Hannah needs. Nice work. Reprimand. Robert. - SPELLS: - ...I-M-A-N-D. Sorry, Robert. Your next word ` feasibility. Robert. - SPELLS: - Very quickly spelled. And it's correct. Nice work, Robert. Back up he goes. Your final Spellbinder word. League. Skylah. - SPELLS: Skylah wants to get in on the action, and she does. Congratulations. So that does wrap up our Brain Teaser. Thank you all for once again playing. Let's take a look at the leaderboard. This time, Skylah takes the lead back and now has 180 points. Robert is 170 points, and Hannah finishes on 120 points. Needed to go for it, Hannah. You got one, but a couple more to stay in this game. So unfortunately you have been eliminated from Brain Busters. Thanks for playing, Hannah. $100 bank account is coming your way. So what are you going to do with that money? - Um, I'd like to buy a waffle machine. - Really? What makes you want to buy that? - Well, I had a waffle the other day and it was really good. - Mind blowing. Well, all the best. (CHUCKLES) You'll have to send one to me to make sure they're good, OK? - Yep. - Thank you very much for playing, Hannah. And congratulations to Skylah and Robert. For them, it is all to the Brain Buster. - Two players will race, but there can only be one winner. Who will get the chance to go to the Amygdala and turn their points into dollars? Don't go anywhere. We'll be right back. Don't go anywhere. We'll be right back. * - Welcome back to Brain Busters. We now have our two finalists locked in and ready to take on the Brain Buster! - I'm up here with our two finalists, Rob and Skylah. Well done to both of you on making it this far. Rob, really enjoy playing the piano, bro? - Yup, I do. - What's the first song you learnt on the piano? - Uh, probably 'Mary Had a Little Lamb'. - 'Mary Had a...' Nice, man. Well, I hope those skills help you unlock that code, bro. All the best. And Skylah, really into dancing. - Sure am. - All right, then. Five, six, seven, hit the... Whoa, nice. Well, all the best to you both. Let's jump up on our zip lines and get ready to fly. Here we go. Three, two, one. Let's go! (ZIP LINES WHIRR) Two strong players enter the Brain Buster today. Only one can make it through to the Amygdala, and we are about to find out who. both quickly move from the Neurotransmitter to the Molecule Steps. Don't forget the code. You're going to need it straight after the Corpus Callosum. Rob engages the Hippocampus, and... Yes! Unlocks the Parietal Lobe. Nice one, Skylah. Rob is slightly ahead now, but there's plenty of ground still to cover in the Ultimate Obstacle Course. These Web Tunnels can be tricky, but Rob is smashing it and already at the Frontal Lobe. How's Skylah doing? Nearly out of the tunnel. Both Rob and Skylah heading for the DNA Molecule Switches. Who will have the luck to find the correct combination first? It's Rob! And he's first to enter the Basal Ganglia! Under... Skylah's still at the ladder. Which means Rob is taking it out today. (REVERBERATING BOOM) Skylah had a fantastic run on Brain Buster today with an impressive perfect score in her specialist round. Ka pai to mahi! - Strong finish from Skylah! Hit the buzzer! There we go. And that is time. Robert, I'll get you to come across this way. And we'll start with you first, Skylah. Congratulations on getting it through our Brain Buster. How did we find the course? - Oh, tiring. - (CHUCKLES) Tiring. Good fun, though? - Yeah. - Nice work. Well, hey, second place today on Brain Busters. Of course, you get to go home with a $100 bank account as well. So what are you going to do with the money? - Um, I've been really wanting to get me some new shoes, so... yeah. - Perfect chance to buy some. Thank you so much for coming on the show, Skylah. Congratulations, Robert. You are today's Brain Buster champion. How does that feel? - Feels good. - Feels good? And enjoyed the course? - Yeah, it was really fun. I got pretty lucky with the DNA Ladder thing. - Managed to get it pretty much straight away, and it's paid off. - Yeah. - Congratulations, Robert. For Robert, it is now through to Amygdala. Robert, welcome to Amygdala. Congratulations on making it. Did you think you were gonna get here from the start? - Uh, no. I thought I was gonna mess up on the jungle gym, to be honest. - But you didn't. You showed the Ultimate Obstacle Course who was boss, and now you are here. So congratulations. Of course, you've had a fantastic run today as well. Absolutely dominated Mega Memory, and that really helped. So, you got 170 points today, and Skylah got 180 points. So she got more points than you and you get to take all those points away from her and add that to your total, which is $350. Let's try win you as much as we can, all right, Robert? - Yeah. - Here we go. Your first Amygdala question. How many days are there in one week? - Seven. - Is correct. (CHUCKLES) Which former wrestler and current actor has the nickname The Rock? - Uh... Oh, what's-his... name. - I don't know. I just know him by The Rock, so pass that one. Yeah. - Dwayne Johnson, aka Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson. Next up. What is the name for cooking an egg by putting it in hot water without its shell? - Poaching. - Correct. there we are. Nice work. Back on track. A television screen produces a lifelike image by combining which three light colours? - Red, blue and green. - That's correct. What is the shape of a planet's orbit around the sun? - An ellipse. - What made you say that? - Uh, because it was originally thought to be a circle, but it's not because Kepler proved it. It's an ellipse. - Pretty good back- up evidence there. And, of course, it's correct. What is the name of the stretch of water which separates the South Island from the North Island? - That would be... oh, the f... Foveaux Strait. - Foveaux Strait. Robert, you don't seem too confident with that one, though. - I think I'm` I'm pretty sure it's the Foveaux, but I might be mixing it up with the stretch of water between Stewart Island and South Island. (WINCES) I was. - You are correct, yes. It was the Cook Strait. - Yeah. - Separates the South Island from the North Island. What kind of animal was the now-extinct dodo? - It was a bird. - Seem much more sure of this one. Was it a bird? Yes, it was. Robert, your final Amygdala question. You ready for it? - Yeah. - All right. What name is given to a blended drink that includes fruits, vegetables, yoghurt and milk? - A smoothie. - Smoothies are great, right? - Yeah. - Is it the answer we're looking for, though? Yes. The correct answer was, of course, smoothie. As we take a look at the board, $210. Robert, it is all yours. So what are you going to do with the money? - Uh, probably just put in my bank account and just let it sit there until I find something to actually use it for, instead of wasting it on something. - (LAUGHS) A very wise move indeed, Robert. Hey, thank you so much for playing. All the best with the studies as well. - Well done, Robert, man. Hey, hopefully The Rock doesn't come knocking on your door tonight. - (LAUGHS) - Hey, all the best, man. - If you guys want to take out the Brain Buster, just like our man Robert, jump online and head to HeiHei Games. Thank you so much for joining us today. Until next time, that's us for Brain Busters. www.able.co.nz Copyright Able 2020
