- Four players, three rounds, two players race, one winner takes it all. Kia ora, I'm Chris Kirk, and this is Brain Busters. Get ready for a series of escalating rounds where we test our players on a variety of topics before it all leads up to this - the Brain Buster. - Mikey Falesiu at your service. There comes a time in life where obstacles will be thrown at you, literally. It's that day for our top two competitors, will they fight or flight? Can't wait, Chris. - Thanks for that, Mikey. And don't forget, you can play from home as well. So let's meet today's Brain Busters. Nau mai, haere mai. Welcome to Brain Busters. Today, we have four players hoping they've got what it takes to be called the ultimate Brain Buster. First, we'll get into our specialist round where our players will choose from six options. Hopefully they will get enough points to avoid elimination and stay in this game. So let's meet those players now. First, we have Te Apirahama. Welcome to the show. Now, I hear you want to go over to England? Why do you want to go over to England? - I want my first trip overseas to be to attend Her Majesty the Queen's funeral. - (LAUGHS) OK. Err. Reason being...? - I idolise the queen. - Very cool. - Well, hopefully that's in a few years' time, right? - In the quite distant future. - Awesome. Great to have you on the show. We also have Dominic. Dominic right into acting? - Yeah. - You want to be an actor when you're older? - Um, yeah. - What is it about acting? - I don't know. I just like the adrenaline that rushes through. - Well, hopefully you can channel that adrenaline here on Brain Busters today. We also have Holly. Holly, no stranger to the camera. Been on some TV shows before, including What Now? Obviously an amazing dancer. You've also won an award. Can you tell us a little bit about this? - Well, last year at NZDA, so the New Zealand Dance Award, we won the Primary Musical Theatre award. - Congratulations. - So that's singing and dancing. - Awesome. Congratulations. Might have to get you to sing and dance your way up on the stage a bit later on. Good luck to you, Holly. And we also have Katherine. Katherine, love playing the clarinet? What is it about the clarinet that's so awesome? - At first I played ukulele and before my ukulele lessons, the clarinet teacher would always be there, and, like, packing up his instrument. And occasionally he'd play something, and I just thought it was really cool. So I gave it a try. - And here you are. - Yeah. - Awesome. Good luck to you as well. I think we should get straight into it today. So let's play the first round. It is Mega Memory. 90 seconds is going to be put on the clock, 10 points for each correct answer. Buzz in and get it wrong, though, you will lose ten points Best of luck. Here we go. Your time starts now. What small, circular cake is often made with a hole in the middle? Holly. - A doughnut. - Correct. What time of day do both TVNZ1 in TV3 air their main news bulletin? Te Apirahama. - 6 O'clock. - Is the theme park Disney World located in Alaska or Florida? - Te Apirahama. - Florida. - What kind of animal is Slinky Malinki? Katherine. - Dog. - Cat. Field hockey sticks are always right handed. True or false? Dominic. - True. - The cerebrum is part of which human organ? Dominic. - Brain. Which brand claims to produce New Zealand's favourite tomato sauce? - Te Apirahama. - Wattie's. - What Olympic discipline does Lisa Carrington represent New Zealand in? - Te Apirahama. - Rowing? - Canoe. On which celestial body is the Sea of Tranquillity? Te Apirahama. - The moon. In the tabletop game, 'D&D' stands for what? Te Apirahama. - Dungeons and Dragons. - Where in New Zealand, would you find Cathedral Square? Te Apirahama. - Wellington. - Christchurch. What is the chemical symbol for carbon? Te Apirahama. - C. - C is correct. Just in time there as well. Thank you for playing the first round of the day. Let's see where our scores are after Mega Memory. Te Apirahama has the lead with 40 points. Dominic is on 20 points, Holly has ten points, and Katherine on zero points. So now we move to our specialist subject round. And Katherine gets to start. I think it's time we boost that score. So what are we playing, Katherine? - Sequencer. - Thank you very much. Let's play Sequencer. We've got to swap out that sheet music for a whole lot of Sequencer answers. Katherine, please step forward. All right, Katherine, time to get some points on the board, all right? Avoid that elimination, fingers crossed. 20 points for each correct sequence. Here comes your first one. Julian Dennison, Antonia Prebble, Temuera Morrison. In which order were these New Zealand actors born? Last-minute decision there, and Julian Dennison in first. Let's see if you're right with that. Needed to swap that order to what you had originally. Electric blankets, rubber hot water bottle, bed warmer. In what order were these invented? Have we got this one, Katherine? It's all right. Still some more questions to go. Sheldon Cooper, Alf Stuart, Chris Warner. In what order did these characters first appear on television? All right, need this one to be right. Need some points. Here we go, nice work, Katherine. Radium, penicillin, helium gas. In which order were these discovered? Again, just needed to swap around radium and penicillin there. Peter Burling and Blair Tuke win Olympic gold in the 49er class. Team New Zealand win the America's Cup for the first time. Barbara Kendall wins Olympic gold. In what order did these sailing events take place? Again, having a bit of a think. Have we got the final sequence correct? Unfortunately, not correct there, I'm sorry to say, Katherine. But still a really nice job done. Thank you so much for playing Sequencer. Te Apirahama still has first place with 40 points. Dominic is on 20 points, Katherine has 20 points as well, And Holly has 10 points. So, next doing the specialist subject round is Holly. What are we playing, Holly? - Blueprinter. - Thank you very much. Let's play Blueprinter. Getting ready to dance her way up to the front, it's Holly. Please come forward. I won't actually make you dance all the way up here. Holly, you ready to go? How's your memory? - Pretty good. - All right. We're about to test that now. So you're gonna have 30 seconds to have a look at what our Blueprinter is. Then you're gonna have 30 seconds to put in those answers. Best of luck. Let's take a look. Downtown Toronto. Your time starts now. Canada's largest city has a population of almost three million. It is home to the 553m tall CN Tower, the Hockey Hall of Fame, and the Maple Leaf Gardens. Ten seconds left. And that is time, Holly. Big breath of fresh air in, hopefully we've locked them in. You have 30 seconds to input your answers. Here we go. Your time starts now. Halfway. Just like that, all the answers put in. Still had a bit of time on the clock as well. So you feeling confident, Holly? - Yeah. - All right, let's take a look. Nice work. Great start with Royal Ontario Museum. Not correct with the university, though, or the CN Tower. Or Chinatown. Come on, show us green! Yes, nice work with Little Italy. Missed conservatory and the financial district. So hard around there, Holly, but fingers crossed, you can stay in this game. Thank you so much for playing Blueprinter. Holly is on 50 points, Te Apirahama is on 40. Dominic is 20 points, and Katherine also has 20 points. So just like that, two of our players have already completed their specialist subject grounds. And of course, all of our players have their fingers crossed, hoping they can get to the Brain Buster. - The Brain Buster is no joke. You're going to need upper body strength, lower body strength and pure heart to complete this bad boy. Easier said than done. - Thanks for that, Mikey. And don't forget, you can play from home as well. Just head online to Heihei games. Don't go anywhere. We'll be right back for more Brain Busters. * Nau mai, hoki mai. Welcome back to Brain Busters. Now, just before the break, Katherine and Holly tackled their specialist subject grounds. And next up, we have Dominic. So, Dominic, what are we playing? - Spellbinder. - Thank you very much. Let's play Spellbinder. Hoping he can avoid elimination, please step forward, Dominic. How are the nerves, Dominic? - Uh... They're coping. - Coping? That's good. Cope, channel, them, OK? You got this. Here we go. Here comes your first Spellbinder words ` 'Mighty.' Lovely. Your next word is 'represent'. Correct. 'Anchovies.' '...o-v-i-e-s', there, Dominic. 'Satellite.' Needed a double L in there, sorry, Dominic. 'Asymmetrical.' Just the one 'S' again, Dominic. And your final word is medieval. Is correct, strong finish there. Nice work with some very tricky words as well. Congratulations, Dominic. Thank you so much for playing Spellbinder. Dominic has the lead now with 80 points. Holly is on 50 points. Te Apirahama is on 40 points and Katherine is on 20 points. We just have one player left for their specialist subject round, and that is Te Apirahama. So what have you chosen to play? - Reo Rangatira. - Thank you very much. Let's play Reo Rangatira. Hoping to make Her Royal Highness very proud, Te Apirahama, please step forward. No pressure, but I mean, the Queen could be watching. So we've gotta take that into consideration as well, OK? 20 points for each correct answer. Best of luck. Here we go. What is a Maori word for sock or stocking? - Tokena. - Ae. Stacey Jones of Ngati Maniapoto and Nga Puhi, Tawera Nikau of Tainui and Benji Marshall of Ngai Tuhoe are legends in what sport? - League? - That's correct. Mareikura are an order of female supernatural being. What is the corresponding male order called? - Tohunga? - In Maori what is a word for above and up? - Uh, runga? Or ki runga? Correct. No te hea iwi i ne wahine papaho katoa: Miriama Kamo, Stacey Morrison, ratou ko Melodie Robinson? - Ngati Porou? Your final Reo Rangatira question. What kind of kaiwaiata is Dame Kiri Te Kanawa? - Pass, I don't know. - No answer? Opera the final one there for Reo Rangatira. I think you knew that one, and I think there's an earlier question you probably could have got as well. Still a nice job. So thank you so much for playing Reo Rangatira. All of our players have now completed this specialist subject round. So where do they sit on the leaderboard? Let's take a look. Te Apirahama has reclaimed the lead, now sitting on 100 points. Dominic has 80 points, Holly has 50 points, and Katherine has 20 points. So I'm sorry to say, Katherine, you have been eliminated from Brain Busters. Not going home empty-handed, though. A $100 bank account is all yours. So what are you going to do with the money, Katherine? - Put it towards saving up for going on a Japanese exchange trip for my school. - Oh, awesome. Have you been learning Japanese for a long time? - Just this year, actually. Oh, that's super exciting. You can already go to Japan. Best of luck for that, if you can get over there as well some time soon. Thank you so much for playing, Katherine. For our three remaining players, though, it is getting closer and closer to the Brain Buster. - One down, one left to go until our final two to find out what the Brain Buster is all about. - Thanks for that, Mikey. Now, as always, before we can get to the Brain Buster, we have our Brain Teaser. We've gone through all of our specialist subject rounds today, but we actually have two left, and now our players get to choose which one they would like to play. Today's options are Equaliser or Identifier. So Te Apirahama, Dominic and Holly, please make your choice now. All of our options have been locked in. Let's start and see what Te Apirahama has chosen. Identifier. Dominic picked... Identifier as well, and Holly chose... Identifier! There you go, we know you guys want to play, so let's get straight into it. It's Identifier. The pressure is on for all of our players. There's only two can go through to the Brain Buster. Who it'll be, we're about to find out. 30 points for each correct answer. Buzz in and get it wrong, though, you will lose 30 points. Let's get to your Brain Teaser now. Dominic. - Location of the road, radio going, and colour of car. - Dominic, this one to take the lead. Nicely done. Holly. - Shouting, normal talking, whispering. - Swap that order round, and Holly thinks she has it. - Nicely done, Holly. Dominic. - Paper towel, plywood, glass. - This to extend the lead... And Dominic does it. Congratulations. That does wrap up our Brain Teaser. Super fast as well. Thank you all for playing. Let's take a look now at the leaderboard. Dominic has 140 points. Te Apirahama has 100 points. And Holly is on 80 points. Got one in that Brain Teaser, but needed another one as well to get through, unfortunately, Holly, so your time on Brain Busters is up, but you get to go home with a $100 bank account. Holly, what are you going to do with that money? - I'll probably save up for a new phone. - Nice choice. Any plans for what one you want to get? - Not sure yet. - Probably the latest and greatest, right? All the best, Holly. Thank you so much. And congratulations to Te Apirahama and Dominic. They are through to the Brain Buster. - Two players will race, but only one winner. Who will get the chance to go to the final round and turn their points into dollars? Stay right there. We'll be back. * The question was, 'What is the name of Mongolia's currency?' It's the Tughrik. Welcome back to Brain Busters. We now have our two finalists locked in and ready to take on the Brain Buster. - I'm joined here with our two finalists, Te Apirahama and Dom. Well done, boys, on making it this far. Now, Te, to tell us about your name, bro. Beautiful name. - I was named after my great-grandfather. His full name was Mahuta Te Apirahama Mua. - Awesome. - So he passed away six months before I was born. So my parents thought it would be a good tribute to him. Cool, bro. Hey, win or lose, I'm sure Grandpa will still be proud of you. And Dom, our drama boy. What got you into drama, man? - My mum made me go to this drama kindergarten when I was 3, so that got me started. Cool, man. Well, no pressure. All the best to you both. May the best person win. It's time to shine, jump up on the zip lines and let's do this. 3, 2, 1... Go! Te Apirahama idolises the queen, but only one can be king of the ultimate obstacle course. And Dominic likes drama, well, I think there will be plenty of drama provided by the Brain Buster as our two finalists face off. Now entering the corpus callosum. Hopefully both memorise your codes, as you would need them, here at the hippocampus. Te Apirahama enters his first. And yes, ka pai, here is Dominic now. Oh, no dice. Gonna try again. Fingers crossed. Yes. That might set Dominic back a bit. Wow, super speedy going up the parietal lobe. Regaining back that lost time already. Te Apirahama and Dominic both entering the tunnels now. I think Te Apirahama has a bit of a lead at the stage, but that could all change soon as we head over to the frontal lobe. A fall here would be disastrous. But both players seem to have it under control, and the DNA molecule switches hold the key to unlocking the final part of the course. Who will be first to activate their side? It's Dominic, and he wastes no time heading to the basal ganglia. Te Apirahama still grappling with the molecule switches. And Dominic it makes it to the finish. There's Te Apirahama's switch now. Just goes to show what a difference one obstacle can make. Te Apirahama in the lead for most of the race, but was unlucky with those switches. Over to you, Chris. - Got it! There we go. Tight finish there. Nice work, come across, Te Apirahama, and we'll have a quick chat. Congratulations, guys, on completing the Brain Buster. Te Apirahama, we'll start with you. How was it? Enjoy it. - Yeah, it was... It was what I expected. - Challenging? - Yeah. - Good fun though? - Yeah. - That's the main thing. Hey, Te Apirahama, congratulations. Second place today on Brain Busters. Get to go home with a $100 bank account. Got to feel pretty good. What are you gonna do with the money? - Uh, probably save it up for a PS5. - Nice choice. Awesome. Thanks so much for coming on to the show. Dominic, congratulations. You are today's Brain Busters champion. Got to feel pretty good. - Yeah, it does feel good. - Awesome. So how was the course for you? - It was exhilarating. - Exhilarating, nice. And it's only going to get more exhilarating for Dominic because it is time for Amygdala. Dominic, welcome to Amygdala. A hard fought effort from you throughout today's show, and now you're here. What's going through your head? - Um. I'm a bit nervous, so... - More nervous now, or less nervous now after you've gone through everything else? - I don't know why, but I'm more nervous. - Maybe it's because I'm about to tell you how much money you're playing for, which is $240. It could be all yours. Of course, Te Apirahama scored 100 points, and you scored 140 points. Combine that and that gives us our $240. So each correct Amygdala answer is worth $24. - Ready to go? - Yes. - Best of luck. Is the game we play as being their bodies to put hands and feet on dots called Twister or Blister? - Twister. - Nice easy start. - Which cartoon pig character has a younger brother named George? - Peppa Pig. - Fan of Peppa Pig? Great show. Before Jacinda Ardern, who was New Zealand's last female Prime Minister? - Pass. - Helen Clark was the answer, our 37th Prime Minister. Which singer-songwriter with the surname Carey has been dubbed The Songbird Supreme.? - Mariah Carey. - Correct. Nice work. In restaurants, what is the literal translation of the French expression 'Soup du jour'. - Pass. - Soup of the day. What is the first name of the NBA player with the nickname King James? - LeBron James. - Basketball fan yourself? - Yeah. - King James, is it LeBron James? It is LeBron. When fully grown, which tree is larger, kowhai or kauri? - Kauri. - Quick to answer that one. Why are you confident with that? 50/50 really, right? - Yeah. Are you on the right side of probability? Today you are. Nice work. Which musical percussion instrument consists of a small hoop with metal discs inserted along its frame? - Tambourine. - Tambourine, locked in? Is it tambourine? Yes, it is Tambourine. What is the distance in metres travelled in a four times 100m relay at the Olympic Games? - 400m. - Four times 100, 400, makes sense. Is it correct? Yes, it is. Your final Amygdala question, Dominic, you've done great. Where is New Zealand's largest airport? - I'm going to say Auckland. - Bit of a guess to finish, is it? Auckland. Largest city, makes sense. Maybe it has the largest airport as well. Yes, it is Auckland. And as we take a look at the board, $192. Could fly yourself there with that money if you wanted to. But what do you want to do with the money, Dominic? - I'm saving up for a free-standing basketball hoop. - Oh, awesome choice. Good luck with that. Hope you get some sweet dunks as well. Dominic, thank you so much for playing on the show. - Shot, Dominic. If you think you can take on the Brain Buster, just like our guy, Dominic, jump online and head to HeiHei Games. - Thank you so much for joining us today. Until next time, that's us for Brain Busters. www.able.co.nz Copyright Able 2020 Captions were made with the support of NZ On Air.
