Get ready for a series of escalating rounds where we test our players on maths, memory, te reo, spelling and more before it all leads up to this ` the Brain Buster! - It's your boy Mikey Falesiu, ready with today's action. Will our top two contestants be prepared to take on the Ultimate Obstacle Course? Can't wait to find out. - Thanks, Mikey. And don't forget ` you can play from home as well. So let's meet today's Brain Busters. (UPBEAT ELECTRONIC MUSIC) Captions were made with the support of NZ On Air. www.able.co.nz Copyright Able 2020 Nau mai, haere mai, and welcome along to Brain Busters. Today we have four players hoping they've got what it takes to be called the ultimate Brain Buster. Now, we'll start with our specialist subject rounds where our players can choose from six options. They'll hope to get enough points to stay in this game and avoid elimination. So let's meet today's players now. First up, we have Henry. Henry, welcome along to Brain Busters. What do you want to be when you're older, Henry? - A lawyer. I plan to... be a lawyer. Yeah. - Why do you wanna be a lawyer? Um, cos I like debating and getting behind arguments. - Excellent. Just don't debate any of the answers, OK? (LAUGHS) Cheers, Henry. Moving along, we have Lucy. Lucy, welcome along to the show. Now, Lucy, if there's one thing you can't live without, what is it? - Chocolate. - What about chocolate is it that you love so much? - It's just the taste. And as soon as you start eating it, you can't stop. - Any particular type of chocolate? - Milk. - Gotta be milk. - Really, yes. - Fair enough, Lucy. Thank you for coming along to the game. Kate, welcome to you. - Hi. - Hoping for some geography to pop up. Been over to China. Very lucky. How was that experience? - It was good. It was hot, but it was really good. - See the Great Wall? - Yeah. - Is it as great as they say? - Definitely. - Awesome. And we also have Jude. Great to have you on the show as well, Jude. Born in South Africa but been here for 10 years now. Big question is ` if New Zealand, South Africa are competing against each other, who are we supporting? - Uh, New Zealand. - Call yourself a Kiwi now? - Yeah. - Good to hear, Jude. Thank you so much for coming. So our four players are sitting ready. Let's get into our first round of the day. It's Mega Memory. 90 seconds on the clock. Best of luck in our first round. Here we go. Your time starts... now. Which plant is known as New Zealand's native Christmas tree? Jude. - Pohutukawa. - In what sport does Tom Walsh compete? Lucy. - Shotput. - Which fruit of the nightshade family is used to make juice, ketchup, puree, paste`? Lucy. - Blackcurrants. - Tomato. What does the 'K' in K-Pop stand for? Kate. - Korean. - Which female talk show host voices Dory in Finding Nemo? Lucy. - Ellen DeGeneres. - When the spacecraft Apollo 8 went into lunar orbit, what was it going around? Kate. - The moon. - Who is the New Zealand director of the upcoming Disney movie, Mulan? Kate. Niki Caro. What is the name of the main dividing mountain range in the South Island? Henry. - Southern Alps. - Beginning with S, which Japanese electronic giant makes Bravia TVs? Lucy. - Samsung. - Sony... was our final answer there for Mega Memory. Great job, everyone. Thanks for playing. Let's take a look now at the leaderboard. We have a three-way tie for the lead. Henry, Kate and Jude all share 10 points. And Lucy is on zero points. So a tough start to Mega Memory, but let's change that now as we move into our specialist subject rounds. Lucy, you are going to be going first. So what have you chosen to play? - Sequencer. - Thank you, Lucy. Let's play Sequencer. Lucy, please step forward. (TENSE ELECTRONIC MUSIC) First to go today, Lucy, so let's get a whole lot of points on the board for you. Here comes your first sequence. In which order were these New Zealand buildings built? First answer locked in. Let's hope we can get off to a good start. Not the start we want, but still plenty more questions to go, Lucy. In which order were these songs released? Some bangers for sure. Is it the right order? You bet. Nice work, Lucy. Put these Stone Age periods in order from oldest to most recent. Have we got the order right? Not quite. Put these countries into alphabetical order. Time to finish strong, Lucy. And she does. Well done, Lucy. Thank you so much for playing Sequencer. You can take a step back to your podium. Lucy is on 40 points. Henry is on 10 points. Kate is on 10 points, and Jude is on 10 points. So as we have a tie for second place, we're just going to go left to right now. So we have Henry up next. What have we chosen, Henry? - Identifier. - Thank you very much. Let's play Identifier. Henry, please step forward. (TENSE ELECTRONIC MUSIC) Best of luck, Henry. 20 points for each correct answer. Here we go. (CHRIS READS QUESTION) Perfect start, Henry. Nicely done. (CHRIS READS QUESTION) Quickly locking in those. Have we got them? Needed to swap rhubarb for taro. Can we get another 20 points? Yes, we can. (CHRIS READS QUESTION) Just the one simple move there for Henry. And it was the right one. (CHRIS READS QUESTION) Henry, taking our time with that third option there. Was it the right one? Let's see. Got the first two. Is Vitamin P right? No, unfortunately. Needed to swap it for Vitamin K. (CHRIS READS QUESTION) Let's see. Yeah, needed to swap albatross and yellow-eyed penguin around. So thank you so much for playing, Henry. Don't wanna debate any of the answers there? - No. - OK, good to hear. Thank you so much, Henry. You can take a step back to your podium. Henry is on 70 points. Lucy has 40 points. Kate is on 10, and Jude also is on 10. So two of our players have already gone through their specialist subject rounds. And when we return, Kate and Jude will have a go as well. And of course, what's in the back of everybody's mind is, 'Can I get to that Brain Buster?' - That's right. Your actions are what matters when it comes to the Ultimate Obstacle Course. I hope they've been working out. - Thank you for that, Mikey. And don't forget, you can play from home as well. Simply head online to HeiHei Games. Don't go anywhere. We'll be right back after the break. * Nau mai, hoki mai. Welcome back to Brain Busters. Let's get straight back into our specialist subject rounds now, because it is Kate's turn. Kate, what have you chosen to play? - Spellbinder. - Thank you very much, Kate. Let's play Spellbinder. Kate, please step forward. (TENSE ELECTRONIC MUSIC) All right, here we go, Kate. 20 points for each correctly spelled word. Best of luck. Here is your first one. Evaporate. - SPELLS: - Great start. Salmon. - SPELLS: - Two in a row. Commission. - SPELLS: - Just needed one more 'S' in there, Kate. Hurricane. - SPELLS: - Very speedy with these words. Geometric. - SPELLS: - Great job. Somersault. - SPELLS: - And your final word is ` monstrous. - SPELLS: - Kate, what a fantastic job. Just like that, Spellbinder is done. A near-perfect score ` six out of a possible seven. Happy with yourself? - Yep. - As you should be. You can take a back to your podium, Kate. - Thank you. - Kate is on 130 points. Henry is on 70 points. Lucy is on 40 points. And Jude is on 10 points. So, Jude, it is now your turn. What have you chosen to play? - Equaliser. - Thank you, Jude. Let's play Equaliser. Jude, please step forward. (TENSE ELECTRONIC MUSIC) All right, Jude, last to go. No pressure. Let's get into it. READS EQUATION: - ANSWERS: - READS EQUATION: - ANSWERS: - Quick on that one. READS EQUATION: - ANSWERS: - 243, answer there. READS EQUATION: - ANSWERS: - Correct. READS EQUATION: - ANSWERS: - Negative 3. READS EQUATION: - ANSWERS: - Nicely done. READS EQUATION: - ANSWERS: - Is the correct answer to our final Equaliser equation. Well done, Jude. A great job. You can take a step back to your podium. And before you know it, all of our players have now completed their specialist subjects. So let's take a look and see where they are on the leaderboard. Kate is sitting in first place with 130 points. Jude has second with 110 points. Henry is on 70 points. And Lucy is on 40 points, which means Lucy, I'm sorry to say, you have been eliminated from Brain Busters. A $100 bank account is coming your way, though. So what are you going to be doing with that money? - I'll probably go shopping with my friends. - How much of it's going to be spent on chocolate, though? - Most of it. - (LAUGHS) I like your honesty, Lucy. Thank you so much for playing. As for our three remaining players, though, it is one step closer to the Brain Buster. - Whoo! The pressure is now on. Three remaining players, two finalists, but only one player will get the chance to go through to the Amygdala. - Kia ora, Mikey. Now, before we can get to that, though, we have our Brain Teaser. Our three remaining players get to choose between our two remaining specialist subject rounds. And today they are Blueprinter and Reo Rangatira. So Henry, Kate and Jude, please select which one you would like to play now. Thank you, everyone, for voting. Let's first take a look at Henry, who has voted for... Blueprinter. Kate has chosen... Blueprinter as well. And Jude has voted for... Blueprinter. There you go. Let's play Blueprinter. 30 points up for grabs for each correct answer in this round as well. So very, very important. Henry, at the moment sitting behind here, so need some of those points. Best of luck to all of you. Let's take a look and see what our Blueprinter is today. It's London Olympic Park. Best of luck. Your time starts now. Aotearoa left the 2012 Summer Olympics in London with a total of 13 medals, including New Zealand's 100th overall Olympic medal, a gold one by kayaker Lisa Carrington. 10 seconds left. (COUNTDOWN CLOCK BEEPS) (SIREN BLIPS) And that is time up. Now you just have to tell me what you think the correct answer is when the locations show. So here is your first one. Kate. - Olympic and Paralympic Village. - And Kate extends her lead with this answer? - Yes, it is indeed the Village. Nice work. - Henry, straight away. - BMX track. - Wants to get in on the points as well. And he does. Nicely done, Henry. Next up... Henry again. - Velodrome. - Is it the Velodrome? Yes. Well done, Henry. Here is your next one. Henry. - International Broadcast Centre. - Is it the International Broadcast Centre? Unfortunately, it wasn't. It was Park Live West. So that does complete our Brainteaser. Thank you, everyone, for playing. Let's take a look at our leaderboard. Kate managed to extend her lead out to 160 points. Jude played it safe, remaining on 110 points. And Henry ends up on 100 points. Had it the end there as well, Henry. Managed to get 130 points. That last one incorrect, unfortunately, taking you back down to a hundred. Just short of Jude's score. So you have been eliminated from Brain Busters. But a really great effort as well, Henry. So what are you going to do with that $100 bank account? - I'm gonna save it towards a Mac Book. - Nice choice. Enjoy that. You've earnt it, Henry. Thanks very much playing. And congratulations to Kate and Jude. It is one step closer to the Brain Buster. - Two tracks to the finish, but only one will be leaving victorious. Who will it be? Don't move a muscle. We'll be right back. Calculator! (CHRIS READS QUESTION) * - Calculator! - What type of money are Bitcoin, Libra and Monera? They are cryptocurrencies and only exist online. Nau mai hoki mai. And welcome back to the show. Our players have battled through, and now it comes down to this ` the Brain Buster! - I'm joined here with our two final contestants, Kate and Jude. Now, Kate, netball seems to be one of your hobbies, eh? - Yeah. - What position do you play? - Uh, midcourt and goal attack. - Oh, so you should be fast enough to get through the Brain Buster, eh? - Hopefully. - Nice. Loving the confidence. And Jude, you into golf, eh? - Yes. - How's that swing of yours? - Uh, pretty good. - Ready to take on the Brain Buster? - Yes. - Nice. It's now time to jump up on to our seats and let's get ready to fly. Here we go. Three, two, one. Fly! (ZIPLINES WHIRR) Kate and Jude, thank you for flying with Brainstem Airlines. You have now arrived at your destination, the Brain Buster. Please disembark using the Neurotransmitters in front of you. Kate has shot out in front right from the get go. That netball speed looks to be paying dividends. Jude is on his way, but he has some catching up to do. Uh-oh. He'll have even more catching up to do as he entered the Corpus Callosum without looking at his code for the Hippocampus! Kate's already into hers and is on her way up the Parietal Lobe. This is bad news for Jude. He's heading back to get his code now, but he'll have to go back through the Corpus Callosum. Oh man, Kate is so far ahead! This is going to be a huge uphill climb for Jude. Come on, man. Enter that code! There it is. As Kate scrambles across the Frontal Lobe, Jude is gaining ground. Kate's up to the DNA Molecule Ladder. Now, this could be quick or it could take a while to find the correct combination. As she grapples with the switches, Jude continues to make his way across the Brain Buster and catch up. Don't count Jude out just yet. Kate's still struggling. There it is! Kate's side of the Brain Buster has been activated, and she is now free to run the rest of the course. As Jude gets himself across the Frontal Lobe, a great run from Kate today as she takes out the Brain Buster. You should be proud of yourself, Kate. And so should you, Jude. My man. If it hadn't been for that lapse in concentration at the start, just forgetting to look at the code the first time, this could have been anyone's race. But great work keeping up the pace and still finishing with a good time. Chris, you can take it from here, man. - Nicely done, Jude, as he comes in and finishes there. Kate, I'll get you to come across this way. Jude, we'll start with you. What a race. A couple wee slip-ups there, which probably cost it for you. But still, did we have a whole lot of fun on the course? - Yes, definitely. - And how have we enjoyed our time on Brain Busters? - It was amazing. - Good to hear. Jude, you get to go home with a $100 bank account as well. So what are you going to do with that money? - I'll probably buy some new golf clubs. - Oh, all the best, man. Now, you're a keen left-hander as well, so we might have to go out for a game some time. - CHUCKLES: Yeah. - Cheers, Jude. And we'll go across to Kate. Congratulations. You are today's Brain Busters champion. How does it feel? - Thank you. Good. - You've done an amazing job to get to this point as well. You enjoy the obstacle course? - Yeah. - Fantastic job, Kate. But for you it's not quite over just yet. One more thing to do, and that Amygdala. Kate, congratulations. You were re so, so speedy on that obstacle course, and now you are here as well ` the Amygdala. How does it feel? - Feels good. - Good. Did you think you were gonna get here at the start of the show? - Oh, I wasn't too sure, but yeah. - Now you are. A great job to get here as well. You got a total of 160 points. Plus, Jude got 110 points, meaning you are playing for $270. A lot of money, Kate. - Yeah. - Big smile on your face shows that as well. OK, let's try and win as much as we can. Here comes your first Amygdala question. About 1000 years ago, which now-extinct giant, flightless bird species inhabited New Zealand? - The moa. - Correct. At a temperature of minus 20 degrees Celsius, is water a solid, liquid or gas? - Solid. - Also correct, Kate. Tenderloin, strip, porterhouse and ribeye are all cuts of what? - Steak. Cow. - Nicely done. How many millimetres is 9.5 centimetres? - 99. No. - 95. - Oh. - Which country hosted the 2019 Pacific Games? - New Zealand. - It was Samoa that hosted them. - Oh. - Which tropical fruit of the genus musa turns yellow as it ripens and is high in potassium? - Mango. - You like mango? - Yeah. - Is it the answer we're looking for here, though? - Mm. - Banana... is the answer. Next up. In geometry, the mathematical equation A to the power of 2 plus B to the power of 2 equals C to the power of 2 is known as what? - Pythagoras' theorem. - That's a mouthful. Been learning that in school? - Yeah. - It is correct. Not considering daylight saving time, how many hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time is New Zealand's? - Four. - Four hours ahead. Unfortunately not four. The correct answer was 12. Would a rotten egg sink or float when put in water? - Float. - 50/50 chance. Coin toss. Have we flipped it right? It is float. Your final Amygdala question is ` how many colours are on a traffic light? - Three. - Three colours on a traffic light. What Kate says. So what colours would they be, Kate? - Red, orange or yellow, and green. - OK. Sure, there's no blue or pink? Magenta, even in there? Maybe some turquoise, aqua? Yes, of course it is three. - (CHUCKLES) - Amazing job. As we take a look there, Kate, $162 is going straight into your pocket. So what are you going to do with that money, Kate? - Um, I might save it up or go shopping. - Nice. What would we be buying if we were going shopping? - Um, clothes. - Gotta to be clothes, right? Kate, thank you so much for coming on the show today. It's been great having you. - Well done. Awesome performance, Kate. If you think you can take on the Brain Buster just like our girl Kate, jump online and head to HeiHei Games. - Thank you so much for tuning in today. That's us for Brain Busters.
