Our top two contestants will be tested here on the ultimate obstacle course, to be crowned as today's Brain Buster. Hopefully they can handle the heat. - Kia ora, Mikey. And don't forget, you can play from home as well. So let's meet today's Brain Busters. Captions by James Brown Captions were made with the support of NZ On Air. www.able.co.nz Copyright Able 2020 Nau mai, haere mai, and welcome to Brain Busters. Today we have four players hoping they've got what it takes to be called the ultimate Brain Buster. Now, as always, we start with our specialist subject rounds, where our players can choose from our six options. They'll hope to get enough points to stay in this game and avoid elimination. So let's meet our players now. - Firstly, Sarah, welcome to Brain Busters. - Hi. Tell us, Sarah, you're a big fan of reading. Favourite book series? - A Series of Unfortunate Events. - Nice choice. What do we love about it? I like the mysteries, and if you dig through it, you get a lot more information. - Nice! Cool. Great to have you here on the show, Sarah. Also, Hunter, welcome. - Are we ready for Brain Busters? - Yeah. - Do we think we can take it out? - Probably. I like the confidence, Hunter. Best of luck to you. Also, Teejay, great to have you on the show, my friend. - Play rugby? - Yes, I do, for Pleasant Point. - How's the season gone so far? - Yeah, undefeated. - Undefeated. - Can we let that continue through Brain Busters here as well? - Yes. Nice. I like the confidence so far. And we also have Madison. Madison, welcome to the show. When you're not here on Brain Busters or at school, what do you like to do? - I like doing art and photography. - Nice. What kind of artistic things do you like to do? I do lots of things like coloured pencil, watercolour painting, and recently I've started digital art. Ooh, very flash. Well, great to have you here all on the show. Let's get straight into our first round of the day. It's Mega Memory. First round all the day, it is Mega Memory, so 90 seconds on the clock. Best of luck to all of you. Your time starts now. - What is the main ingredient of peanut butter? Madison. - Peanuts. - Of the three Barrett brothers to represent the All Blacks, who is the youngest? Hunter. - Jordie Barrett. - The quadriceps femoris is a muscle found on which limb? Sarah. - Legs. - On what continent will you find the country Djibouti? Hunter. - Africa. Complete the name of this 2009 movie ` Cloudy With a Chance Of... Hunter. - Meatballs. - How many centimetres make up one metre? Hunter. - 100. - What kind of animal is Babe? Hunter. - Pig. Buttercup, crown and kumi kumi are varieties of what vegetable? Madison. - Pumpkin. - In which season do daffodils most commonly flower? Sarah. - Spring. In a game of Quidditch, how many points is the Golden Snitch worth? Hunter. - A winning game? - 150. What colour is predominantly associated with the branding of the warehouse? Sarah. - Red. - The address 'P Sherman, 42 Wallaby Way, Sydney' appears in which movie? Madison. - Finding Nemo. - Is correct. And that wraps up Mega Memory. Thank you all for playing. Let's take a look now at the leader board. Hunter is on 40 points, Sarah has 30, Madison also has 30, and Teejay is on zero. So, let's change that score for Teejay right now, as we move into our specialist subject round. - Teejay, what have you chosen to play? - Spellbinder. - Thank you very much. Let's play Spellbinder. Teejay, please step forward. (SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC) All the way from Timaru. Ready to represent them well? Good to hear. 20 points for each currently spelled word. Best of luck. Here comes your first one. Underground. (DING!) Correct. Confused. (DING!) Well done. Spasmodic. (DING!) Nice work. Your next word is parachute. (DING!) Communal. (DING!) Incredible stuff here. Your final word is... rowdy. (BUZZ!) R-O-W-D-Y. The final one there. A really, really strong start. Impressive there. Just a couple letters off getting a perfect score as well. But really well done. You can take a step back to your podium. Teejay now has 100 points. Hunter is on 40, Sarah is on 30, and Madison is on 30. So, next we have Sarah playing. What have you chosen, Sarah? - Blueprinter. - Thank you. Let's play Blueprinter. Sarah, please step forward. (SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC) - Think you've got a pretty handy memory, Sarah? - Yeah. Good to hear. So, you're gonna have 30 seconds to memorise what our Blueprinter is today, and then 30 seconds to input your answers. Best of luck. Let's take a look at what our Blueprinter is. The Vatican City. Best of luck. Your time starts now. Sitting inside Italy's borders, Vatican City is the smallest country in the world. Not only does it mint its own euros, print its own stamps, issue passports and licence plates, it also operates media outlets and has its own flag and anthem. And there are no taxes. (SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC) That's time up. You now have 30 seconds to put in your answers. And that starts now. (TENSE MUSIC) 15 seconds left. Where is that last one? Five seconds left, not that you need it. There we go. Raced through those first six, and then just a bit of time on the Vatican Gardens. Did we put it in the right place? We'll find out right now. Please reveal the first one. Got the radio station. That's number two. (BUZZ!) Missed out on St Peter's Basilica, though. Got the Vatican Museums. And the Academy of Sciences. Also the Ethiopian College. And the Vatican Gardens. Very, very impressive, Sarah. Well done. Six total correct there. You can take a step back to your podium. Sarah takes the lead with 150 points. Teejay is on 100 points. Hunter is on 40 points, and Madison is on 30 points. So two very strong stats for Teejay and Sarah. But of course, all of our players are wondering if they'll have enough points to make it to the Brain Buster. - Your actions are what matters most when it comes to the ultimate obstacle course. I hope they've been training their upper body, because they're gonna need it when it comes to the Parietal Lobe. Thanks for that, Mikey. And don't forget, you can play from home as well. Just head online to Heihei Games. Don't go anywhere. We'll see you a muri i te whakata. * Nau mai, hoki mai, welcome back to Brain Busters. Now, just before the break, we had Teejay and Sarah do a fantastic job in their specialist subject rounds. - And next to play is Madison. So what have you chosen, Madison? - Identifier. Great choice. Let's play Identifier. Madison, Please step forward. (SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC) All right, Madison, let's see if we can try and avoid elimination, OK? Let's go with Identifier. (DING!) Locking our first options in straight away. And they are all correct. Eliminate the three plants that do not grow on dry land. (DING!) Again, very quickly, Madison. That's why. Strong start for Madison. Can we continue it here? (BUZZ! BUZZ! DING!) Mercury and Earth needed to swap for that one. (DING!) Back on track. (DING!) Again not wasting any time. Correct again, Madison. (DING!) Took your time with that one. You did select 'created braille', but then swapped it to 'three laws of motion'. Was that the right thing to do? (DING! DING! BUZZ!) It was there, but needed 'invented calculus' as well. Still, very, very well done, Madison. Thank you so much for playing Identifier. Sarah still has that lead, with 150 points. Madison moves to second with 110 points. Teejay close behind on 100 points. And Hunter has 40 points. - So it's just Hunter left to play. What have you chosen? - Sequencer. Thanks very much, Hunter. Let's play Sequencer. Hunter, please step forward. (SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC) You've seen everyone else go, Hunter, so how are the nerves feeling? - I'm feeling all right. - You were confident at the start of the show. - You still feeling confident now? - Yeah, I guess. - Good to hear. Best of luck. Let's get into it. Put these research tools into the order they were released. See how we've done in our first one. Very well. In which order were these TV series released? Was thinking about changing it at the end there. Decided to stick with it, though. Good thing, too. In which order did these New Zealand events occur? Again had a wee think, swapping to and fro. - Happy with that one? - Kinda. Let's find out. Well done, Hunter. List these creatures from lightest to heaviest. - Feeling more confident with this one? - I guess. Nice work, Hunter. Doing a fantastic job. In which order were these Indiana Jones movies released, from first to latest? - Seen the movies? - Some, but not all. Pretty good movies. - But not a pretty good order. - Nah. Final Sequencer. In which order were these landmarks completed? Did we put that in the right order? Yes, Hunter, you did. Nicely played. A great effort on Sequencer ` five correct as well. So you can take step back to your podium. All of our players have now completed their specialist subject rounds, so let's take a look at the leader board. Sarah has the lead, with 150 points. Hunter moves up to second, with 140 points. Madison is on 110 points, and Teejay has 100 points. So, Teejay, I'm very sorry to tell you, but you have been eliminated from Brain Busters ` just 10 points in it, as well. So close. But unfortunately, not today. So you do get to go home with a $100 bank account. What are you going to use that money for, Teejay? - I might put it towards a gaming console. - Ooh, nice. What one are we going for? - Maybe PlayStation 5. Flash. I like it. All the best, Teejay. Thanks for coming on the show. And congratulations to our three remaining players. It's one step closer to the Brain Buster. - Ooh! It's almost go time for our top two players. I hope they've got their game face ready, because it's about to get real. Thank you very much, Mikey. Before we can get to the Brain Buster, though, we have our Brain Teaser. Now, all of our players have gone through their specialist subject rounds, and we are left with two options for our remaining players to choose from. Today those options are Reo Rangatira or Equaliser. So Sarah, Hunter and Madison, please select which one you would like to play now. Thank you, everyone, for those votes. Let's firstly look at Sarah's vote, which was Equaliser. Hunter has chosen Equaliser as well. And Madison has picked Equaliser. There you have it. Let's play Equaliser. 30 points if you buzz in and get it right, but if you give me the incorrect answer, you will lose 30 points. Best of luck. Here comes your first equation. - Madison. - 144. Is correct. Sarah. - 1003. - Sarah wanting to hold on to that lead. - Uh, 220. - (BUZZ!) - Sorry, Sarah, I had not finished asking the equation, so we have to mark that down as wrong. So we'll move on to our next equation. - Madison. - 228. Well done, Madison. Your final Equaliser equation. - Hunter. - 436. 436 is correct. Hunter waited till that last Equaliser equation to buzz in. And that is the end of it as well. Thank you so much for playing. Let's take a look at our final leader board. Hunter has 170 points. Madison also has 170 points. Then Sarah has 150 points. Well, what a round it was indeed ` everyone changing up all over the place. But unfortunately, Sarah, you have been eliminated from Brain Busters, Hunter just pipping you at the post there. But you get to go home with a $100 bank account. What are you going to do with that money, Sarah? - I'm gonna pay my mum back for the posters she bought me. - (CHUCKLES) Fair enough. What kind of posters did you get? - There's one of DC superheroes and one of Marvel. Awesome. Good to see you're a superhero fan, Sarah. Thank you so much for coming on to the show. And congratulations to Hunter and to Madison. They are both through to the Brain Buster. - Our top two players will race to the finish to be crowned as today's Brain Buster champion. Who will it be? Stay right there. We'll be right back. * Nau mai, hoki mai, and welcome back to the show. We are down to our final two players, who are waiting and are ready for the Brain Buster! - I'm joined here with our two finalists, Hunter and Madison. - Now, Hunter, man of many sports, eh? - Yeah. What kind of sports are you into, bro? - I play a bit of basketball, and then I played soccer for Otago. Nice. Well, do your city proud, man. All the best to you. And Madison, you're really into CrossFit. - Yeah, I've been doing it for about a year now. - Nice. What got you into it? My dad started doing it and he dragged me along, but then I really like it now, so I continued it. Wow. Awesome, Madison. Best of luck to you both, guys. It's now time to jump up on to our zip lines, and let's get ready to fly. Cool. Here we go. Three, two, one,... fly! Hunter and Madison have made it this far, but only one will make it to the Amygdala to turn all those points into dollars. Hunter's sports skills could be a huge advantage, and Madison's CrossFit training could help her big time. Over the Molecule Steps, and so far, so good. Don't forget to memorise the code. Both players hit the Corpus Callosum at the same time. Now for the Hippocampus with those codes. These two are already tied for points, and now tied in the race. Oh, it's on! Up the Parietal Lobe. These athletes are smashing it. It's a tight race. It's anyone's game. Through those tunnels no worries. It's getting very exciting ` even-stevens as they cross the Frontal Lobe. Hunter and Madison both know what is at stake here. Look at them bolt across to the DNA Molecule Ladders. No room for any mistakes now. Straight on to the Switches, wasting no time. Hunter's side has activated! He better move fast, because there's Madison's lights too. It's a race for the finish. Whoo-hoo-hoo! Who's it gonna be? Wow, this is a close ` very close one! - Oh my gosh! What a race that was, as we see both the smokes go. But it was Hunter who managed to get there first. And Hunter, I'll get you to come across this way. Wow, what a race. Madison, we'll start with you. It was going back and forth for who was in the lead there. You gained up so much time, and raced that tunnel as well. What was going through your head? Oh,... just, 'Be fast.' Be fast. And you were. You were both extremely fast. Madison, I'm really sorry to say that you have been eliminated from Brain Busters by what must be less than a second ` well less than a second, in fact. But you do get to go home with a $100 bank account. What are you going to do with that money? - Probably going to save up for new iPad. - Nice choice. Thank you so much for coming on to the show, Madison. What a race indeed. - Hunter, still a little bit in shock there. How are we feeling? - Puffed. Absolutely puffed. You've done fantastic, Hunter. Congratulations on making it through the course. It was really, really close. What a battle. But it's not over yet. You got one more thing left to do, Hunter, and that is Amygdala. (SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC) 165 milliseconds ` that's all it was that separated you and Madison from being here in the Amygdala. - How are we feeling? - Still shocked to get to this point. Did you think you won? Cos the look on your face, thought that you may not have actually got there? - No, I thought she got it. - Well, you managed to get here, so congratulations. And what a battle it's been between you two as well, because you both actually got the same score of 170, - so we combine that for a total of $340. - Cool. - Eyes wide again. - Gonna try and win it all? - Hopefully. That's the way. Best of luck, Hunter. Here comes your first Amygdala question. I like the serious face you just put on then as well. It's good. All right, let's go. Which New Zealand island is nearest to the equator ` the North or South? - The North Island. - Is correct. First lot of points on the board. Nice work. In watch register does Dame Kiri Te Kanawa sing? (TENSE MUSIC) - The high register? (CHUCKLES) (BUZZ!) Needed a bit more info than that. The correct answer was soprano. - Don't know that one. In the animated series The Deep, do the Nekton family live underwater or in space? - Underwater. - Correct. What kind of vehicle is a Routemaster? - A car? - Are we looking for a car? (BUZZ!) Bit bigger than that. A bus was the answer. Chris Rock is the voice of which Madagascar character? - Marty. - # I like to move it, move it. # Marty the zebra. Correct. How many softball world championships have the New Zealand White Sox won? - Let's go with four. Don't know. - New Zealand well known for their softball skills. - Yeah. But have they won four world championships? (BUZZ!) Just one. - Really? Oh. According to the title of a 2006 song by Fergie, Big Girls Don't what? - Cry? Big Girls Don't Cry is correct. Final Amygdala question. Which food item is traditionally carved into a face for Halloween? A pumpkin. Pumpkin. - Ever done it at Halloween? - No. So then, are we sure it's pumpkin? - Yeah ` movies. (DING!) You can always trust movies. Congratulations, Hunter. Let's take a look. $170 is all yours. - A whole lot of money, Hunter. - Yeah. - What are you gonna do with it? - Probably save it to buy a PS5. - Nice choice. All the best for the gaming once you get it. Congratulations, Hunter, once again, for coming on the show. - Well done, Hunter, man. Good performance, bro. If you think you can take on the Brain Buster just like Hunter, jump online and head to Heihei Games. Thank you so much for joining us today. Until next time, that's us for Brain Busters.
